Civil Rights and adventure travel (for kids)

One thing I should say about this blog: if anyone reading it in the future needs to know the suitability of a book for a certain age, you'll have to follow my links to another site - I'm not qualified to judge, and I don't have children of my own, so dig deeper if you want to know if a book I recommend is appropriate for a specific kid or classroom.

My first two books today were clearly returned by someone teaching her children about civil rights. Doreen Rappaport's Freedom River, tells a story about crossing the Ohio River from the slave-owning states of Kentucky or West Virginia to the free state of Ohio. Surprisingly action-packed for a kid's book, the narrative keeps the reader in suspense until the end. The art, however, puts this one over the top. I would call the style "quilting with paper" - but collage pretty well covers it. The colors, patterns and textures create motion and a 3d effect that had me running my fingers over the pages. Absolutely gorgeous work in this one.

A very different style of art, simple, bright and almost cartoonish, supports the story of To Boldly Go: How Nichelle Nichols and Star Trek Helped Advance Civil Rights. The narrative is twofold: a young narrator speaks of the thrill of watching Nichols on screen as a child with her family, and then a 3rd person narrative takes over with a biography of Nichols. I have heard and read Nichols' story before, and I particularly love the part where Martin Luther King, Jr. himself tells her not to quit the show, reminding her of how important it is for people to see her onscreen as an equal member of the crew. I'm glad Angela Dalton thought this story worthy of her efforts. She treats it lightly, not slowing the story down with too much detail, but the impact remains significant.

I really enjoy the way artists can "texture" children's books. Dan-ah Kim's lush The Train Home is like the above-mentioned Freedom River, composed of pen and ink drawing, cut paper and fabric. Again I find myself running my fingers over the page to feel the composition of the art. In the story, Nari looks out of her apartment window, annoyed by the noisiness of her environment, and, as the train rumbles by, she imagines where it might take her, away from city noise. In the forest, she imagines herself in a nest, surrounded by bleeding hearts, butterflies and blue jays. She imagines herself under the sea, living with mermaids and a newspaper-reading, spectacle-wearing octopus. The colors leap off the page as she moves from one potential home to another (what is it about marble lions and libraries?), eventually deciding that she wouldn't be happy without her sister's songs, her grandparents' stories and her parents' laughter. A stunning piece of artwork and a great nudge to children's imagination.

Last but not least is Anna Desnitskaya's On the Edge of the World. It piqued my curiosity because the cover (image, author, title of book) is on both sides of the book - one the reverse of the other. I started with Lucas's side, which tells of his life "on the edge of the world" in Southern Chile, where his father is a marine biologist. Desnitskaya interrupts the narrative with funny pages sketching Lucas's favorite things, illustrated maps and definitions, then returns to the narrative, where Vera begins appearing, as a ghost (outlined), as Lucas wishes he had a friend. He sends a signal in Morse code with his flashlight out into the darkness over the sea...at which point the reader must flip the book upside down and begin to read Vera's story. She lives on the Kamchatka Peninsula in North-Eastern Russia, and she also longs for a friend. It's a very clever and creative way to tell a story - my only complaint is that it's unsatisfying: Lucas and Vera never actually connect - Desnitskaya just leaves it as a possibility. The book has other virtues, however - teaching geography, local flora and fauna, and Morse code. I loved that Lucas climbed a tree to read a new book - and quoted the first lines of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Then, when we read Vera's story, we find that LWW is her favorite book. She, in turn, refers to The Hobbit (Lucas's favorite book) - great teasers for readers inclined to adventure. Even cooler, when I looked it up, I found that this one has been translated from Russian.

I read an article today detailing how one librarian teaches digital literacy; more on this in a future blog, I hope. In the background of a picture of her, I saw delightful "vintage", "travel" posters to Narnia and the Shire and Arrakis. Someday, if I become a children's librarian, I'd love to do something travel-related with this: decorate with such posters, design maps, plan brochures, travel agents... I suppose librarians don't usually do projects with teenagers, but if I could start a reading club, maybe kids would find the enthusiasm for their books enough to do projects - especially if it took place over the summer.

Sinopsis: Dan Bi (Kim Seul Gi) es una estudiante de preparatoria. El día de su examen de ingreso a la universidad, Dan Bi no puede hacer frente a la presión, sobre todo en el área de matemáticas y se escapa a un patio de recreo. Sin saber por qué, ella cae en un charco y es transportada a la época Joseon. Allí, conoce a Lee Do (Yoon Doo Joon). Él es un joven rey del período Joseon que es un experto en matemáticas. Lee Do se encuentra en una situación difícil debido a las sequías y la propagación de una epidemia. De alguna manera, Dan Bi lo ayudará durante su regencia.

Rate:  ���★★★★ 5 stars.

La frase “vine buscando cobre y encontré oro” describe perfectamente mi situación con este kdrama. Como algunos probablemente sepan, soy una fan empedernida de los kdramas de fantasía, especialmente de los que tratan de viajes en el tiempo. Esa fue la razón por la que agregué “Splash Splash Love” a mi watchlist, sin embargo, no me animaba a verlo porque no conocía a ningún actor de allí más que a la protagonista Kim Seul Gi y a Ahn Yeo Seop.

Si alguien aún se encuentra dudando de ver este kdrama por la mis a razón que yo (o por otra), solo me queda por decirles una cosa: ¿Qué esperan? Se están perdiendo de un maravillo kdrama que puedo calificar con un sólido 5 estrellas sin dudarlo. 

“Splash Splash Love” tiene a actores talentosos, personajes entrañables, super lindos, entretenidos y cómicos. Realmente no esperaba tanto (al no conocer a la mayoría de los actores y al tratarse de un kdrama tan corto de 2 horas), pero aún así me dio todo.

Pd. Después de verlo, me quedé con ganas de ver más kdramas de Kim Seul Gi y Yoon Doo Joon.

Hasta el momento que vi Splash Splash Love había visto solo algunos pocos kdramas históricos y éste se convirtió en mi segundo favorito respecto a este género. Uno que a pesar de ver muchos más kdramas históricos, estoy segura que no olvidaré.

A continuación haré un statement que no estoy segura si se considere spoiler o no, pero por si acaso, pongo la advertencia:

Este es el final que yo quería y ansiaba para Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryo :’)

Si un drama de 2 capítulos de 1 hora cada uno (o 10 capítulos de 20 minutos cada uno) como Splash Splash Love nos lo pudo dar en los últimos 5 minutos del kdrama, ¡¿por qué rayos MLSHR no pudo en el último capítulo de 60 minutos?!

De alguna forma Splash Splash Love sanó esa herida que tenía por culpa de Moon Lovers, y eso lo hace aún más perfecta.

Bizim buralarda alışık bir durum olmasa da, evlenmeden, çoluğa çocuğa karışmadan önce okulumu bitirmek istedim. Hep derim, kız çocukları okumalı, iyi yerlere gelmeli, erkeğin eline bakıp, şiddeti, eziyeti, yokluğu, kader deyip sineye çekmemeli.

Ailem itiraz etse de, inadımı kıramadılar. Laf aramızda, zaten oldum olası, burnumun dikine bir kızdım. Beni Kur'an kursuna yollarlardı, ben sokak aralarında kuşlarla beraber şarkılar söyler, boyumdan büyük hayaller kurardım. Akranlarım, eğlencelerde, doğum günlerinde, düğünlerde, konuşmaya bile çekinirken, ben en güzel elbiselerimi giyer, ter içinde kalana kadar güler, eğlenir, dans ederdim. Arada bir annem beni çekiştirip "Ah be kızım, bir parça hanım hanımcık ol!" dese de, olamazdım. Hanım hanımcık olanların düşleri yoktu, bilirdim.

Ellerime bakıyorum.

Bir zamanlar kınalar yaktığım ufacık ellerim yok artık.

Zaman bir nefeste geçiyor ve sanırım insanın önce elleri yaşlanıyor.

Sanki, bir zamanlar, şu sokaklarda koşuşturan, yaramazlık yapan, "Anne n'olur beş dakika daha oynanayım." diye ısrar eden çocuk ben değilmişim gibi.

Nerede şimdi, kırık aynasını eline alıp, saçlarını tarayan ve bir sürü pembe tokalar takan küçük kız?

Yine birazdan üstü başı toz toprak içinde gelecek eve, biliyorum. Nefes nefese ayakkabılarını bir kenara atıp, gözlerimin içine bakacak ve "Anne ben acıktım." diyecek. Sonra ben yine dayanamayıp, onu kollarımın arasına alıp, o kirli yanaklarını, gözlerini, saçlarını öpeceğim, boynunu koklayacağım.

Tıpkı hayalimdeki gibi bir evde oturuyorum.

Küçücük, mütevazi, duvarları mavi boyalı, bir köşesi kitaplarla dolu ve güllü dallı perdeleri olan bir ev. İnanın, sevgisiz insan sarayda da otursa, mutsuz olur. Çocukluk arkadaşımlarımdan biliyorum. Yarası çok olana, para merhem olmuyor.

Çok gevezelik ettim değil mi?

weeps... <333 not only is it such a gorgeous quote but it was also my first time hearing from la revacholiere... You need shivers of 5 to get it but luckily my first playthrough I had FYS of 4 and I got the patrol cloak the first day so I guess that's 5.. so when I was messing with the electronic doorbell on the first day and eventually got this line!!!!! I had NO IDEA what was happening but I was immediately fascinated by this skill.

also if Kim isn't with you, you can ask yourself what just happened and not a soul answers. your skills *never* just leave you in silence like that...

anyway... no it's not oct 19 but that's the naming convention I set when I started so that's how it's going to stay. tbh I had no idea what to do with shivers which is why this isn't anything like my other skilltober posts but hopefully it still does her justice

this scene was just. so amazing. the worst part is how easy it is to miss! if your inland empire is too low you don't get the dialogue that lets you even try the shivers check (found that out the hard way in my second playthrough >:( and you only need 2 IE to get it) and then the shivers check is quite difficult too... the two people I know who played it, neither got to talk to the city! but that also made it feel very special

I remember screenshotting my game when I got this dialogue so I could go look for it! and then finding the body on the boardwalk and looking all around there and going ah, guess I can't get under the boardwalk and it was just flavour text. and forgetting about it.

and then finding it down there!!! it's my favourite I wore it the rest of the playthrough. also the modifier on it!! +1 Shivers: Gift from La Revacholiere 😭 shivers... shivers ily...

also I've been angry with shivers about the humiliation of the shivers fail in front of neha the dicemaker where you take your pants of... and I went to grab a screenshot and it... was Harry all along? all shivers says is that you don't feel anything and it's a bit too warm, and Harry does the rest... sigh. of course he does.

this is a dialogue you can get after talking to Plaisance about the curse after you investigated the doomed commercial area... I know you can come to the conclusion that the curse of the doomed commercial area is caused by being so close to the pale, but that fact that Shivers can pick it up so early on...

there are a bunch of these (unsure if they're implemented in the game or not, I've never encountered them at least) of your patrol cloak talking to you through shivers!

this one has to be in here... the three skill checks are godly difficulty. urgh it hurts my heart

harry and the city are inseparable...

this one hurts me. the church sidequest is my favourite in the game, but there's always this underlying sadness to it that things cannot exist in that church...

shivers is so poetic... In my first playthrough, all of their information on the surrounding area was overwhelming. And I didn't have high enough shivers my second playthrough to get the dialogue... but looking through it again now, it makes so much more sense after playing once.

I don't know what this means... but I wish my city loved me the way revachol loves harry. you also need to pass a godly logic passive to deduce that the world is the thought reader...

i'm not sure if it's weird to add this but screenshot from our shared discord, but it's kind of cool. they're often silly or rude to eachother but they have their moments. re: shivers suggesting moving to toronto (there is a bit more before this that I was contributing to).

I can count on one hand the number of times I've heard from my shivers... the first time was actually *in* toronto when I was there for a concert. the way Harry loves his city isn't the way I love my city, but it does make me wonder if I could feel that way about somewhere else...

Today was the last day of the youngling centre and the first day of summer vacation. Although according to the Captain and his second in command it's the Galactic Solar Solstice. But Kim and Max preferred to call it summer.

Both humans walked around the centre saying goodbye and farewell to the younglings. Many of whom gave hugs or small gifts as a sign of thanks or respect in their respective culture and planet.

All but two children who stood away from the others. Looking not as happy as the others.

"Hey. Look." Max nudged his friend to the two kids.

"Ah...Sam and Dan." together the two walked towards them.

"Where's Kim and Max?"

"They're over there."

"What are they doing?"

"I think they're checking on Sam and Dan."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"Look they're hugging. Maybe they're just sad that we won't see them for a long time."

"Probably. Lets play!"

"Teacher?"

"Yes Emira?"

"Why did you hug Sam and Danny longer than any of us?"

"Oh...because this is probably the last time I'll see them."

"Why??"

"Sam and Dan are leaving. They're going to a new school. One that's on Earth and we live in different parts of Earth so this is probably the last I'll see them."

"But your only supposed to have one teacher! They can't just leave!"

"Humans are different. We don't have one teacher all our school life. We have different teachers and can change schools."

"Even if you really like your teacher?"

"Yeah. I don't have siblings like Kim and I'm actually not that much older than Sam. I'm the same age as their oldest brother...and to be honest they sometimes felt like my younger brothers."

"So you're going to miss them a lot?"

"Yes. Kim has done this before but this is my first time. Kinda sucks that its with kids I've known for over 3 years..."

"Do you want a hug?"

He nodded and the little avian hugged him.

He slowly opened it. It was light, like a feather, and was the size of a picture frame. It was a black screen.

"What is it?"

"Tap the screen."

He did and the screen lit up. Dozens of holographic pictures shot out from it. Most were from class field trips and events but were zoomed in on him and the two brothers. Some he doesn't remember Kim taking but he remembers the time the place.

"I got one too. It started out as a gift for the boys so they could remember us but then they and their parents wanted to return the favor so they made an extra two for us. Some of these are from the parents." she explained smiling at the biggest picture of the boys holding a sign saying 'Thank you for the memories, love Samuel and Daniel'

"I know I don't show it but I'm gonna miss them too. It does get easier with each time but you never stop missing the kid. Remember the kid I told you about, Penny?"

"The girl who gave you 3 stitches?"

"She was my first goodbye. She was at the preschool I first started at. Sweet, kind, a little ankle biter, but I really liked her. I had known her for 3 years when she left."

"...I'm really gonna miss them." he sighs, slumping towards his friend. She holds him in a side hug.

"I know buddy, me too...me too" they looked at the pictures in silence and if one of them let a tear fall then that was nobodies business but their own.

Capítulo 02.

A manhã chegou silenciosa, quebrada apenas pelo som insistente do despertador na mesa de canto de Kim Dan. Ele abriu os olhos com uma sensação estranha no peito, algo que parecia uma mistura de alívio e ansiedade. A lembrança da noite anterior veio à tona imediatamente: as palavras de [Nome], o tom caloroso e a gentileza em seu olhar.

Era raro que alguém olhasse para ele daquela forma, como se realmente enxergasse algo além da fachada cansada. Isso o incomodava e, ao mesmo tempo, despertava um calor reconfortante que ele não sabia como lidar.

Depois de um banho rápido e um café apressado, Kim Dan saiu de casa para mais um dia no consultório. Enquanto andava pelas ruas movimentadas da cidade, ele sentia uma leveza incomum nos passos, como se as palavras de [Nome] tivessem acendido algo dentro dele. Mas, ao mesmo tempo, uma pequena voz em sua cabeça insistia que aquilo era perigoso. Esperar algo mais sempre era perigoso.

Assim que chegou à academia, Dan encontrou sua rotina habitual. Pacientes lotavam a sala de espera, papéis se acumulavam na mesa, e a voz autoritária do chefe ecoava pelos corredores. Mas, mesmo em meio àquela confusão, ele se pegou distraído, pensando no homem que o havia levado para casa na noite anterior.

“Kim Dan, você está ouvindo?” A voz firme do chefe o trouxe de volta à realidade.

“Ah, desculpe. Sim, estou ouvindo.” Ele respondeu, envergonhado, antes de se apressar para atender os pacientes.

O dia transcorreu em um borrão de compromissos, mas, ao final do expediente, algo inesperado aconteceu. Quando Kim Dan saiu do consultório, lá estava [Nome], encostado no mesmo carro da noite anterior, esperando por ele.

“Você de novo?” Dan perguntou, surpreso, mas incapaz de esconder o leve sorriso que surgiu em seus lábios.

[Nome] deu de ombros, exibindo um sorriso despreocupado. “Achei que você poderia querer companhia. É errado?”

Dan balançou a cabeça, sentindo-se desconcertado. Não estava acostumado a esse tipo de atenção, muito menos a alguém que parecia tão disposto a estar ali sem esperar nada em troca.

“Quer dar uma volta?” [Nome] perguntou, inclinando a cabeça em direção ao carro.

Kim Dan hesitou por um momento, mas, ao olhar para aquele sorriso que exalava sinceridade, ele tomou uma decisão impulsiva. “Tudo bem. Só não me leve para muito longe.”

Os dois entraram no carro, e [Nome] ligou o motor, lançando um olhar divertido para Kim Dan. “Relaxa, não vou te sequestrar. Pelo menos não hoje.”

Dan soltou uma risada curta, mas genuína, algo que surpreendeu até ele mesmo. Era estranho se sentir tão à vontade com alguém que, no fundo, ele mal conhecia. Talvez fosse o tom leve de [Nome] ou o jeito como ele parecia não exigir nada além de sua presença.

A cidade passava pelos vidros como um borrão de luzes e sons. O silêncio entre eles não era desconfortável, mas Kim Dan ainda sentia a necessidade de preencher o espaço. “Então… por que você está fazendo isso? Quero dizer, você não me conhece.”

[Nome] manteve os olhos na estrada, mas o sorriso em seus lábios não desapareceu. “Talvez porque eu vi algo em você que me lembrou de mim mesmo.” Ele deu de ombros. “E talvez porque eu acho que você merece mais do que o que está recebendo agora.”

Dan ficou em silêncio, absorvendo aquelas palavras. Ele não sabia como responder, porque, no fundo, ele também não sabia se acreditava nelas.

Eles pararam em um pequeno parque à beira do rio. [Nome] desligou o carro e olhou para ele. “Vem, quero te mostrar algo.”

Sem saber o que esperar, Dan seguiu [Nome] para fora do carro. O ar estava fresco, carregado com o som suave da água correndo no rio. Eles caminharam em silêncio até uma pequena ponte de madeira que cruzava o curso d’água.

“Esse é o meu lugar preferido na cidade,” [Nome] disse, apoiando-se na mureta da ponte. “Quando as coisas ficam complicadas, eu venho aqui. Me lembra que sempre existe algo além dos problemas que estamos enfrentando.”

Kim Dan observou a cena diante dele. A luz fraca do fim do dia refletia na água, criando um brilho dourado. Por um momento, ele sentiu como se pudesse respirar novamente, como se o peso que sempre carregava tivesse se tornado um pouco mais leve.

“Por que me trouxe aqui?” Ele perguntou, sua voz quase um sussurro.

[Nome] o olhou, seu semblante sério agora. “Porque você precisa de um lugar assim também. E porque eu queria te mostrar que, mesmo quando tudo parece escuro, sempre há algo bonito esperando por você.”

Dan desviou o olhar, sentindo os olhos marejarem. Ele não sabia como responder, mas sabia que, pela primeira vez em muito tempo, sentia uma fagulha de esperança.

Summary: Your heart breaks again, this time over whiskey glass.

Warnings: unrequited feelings, Seokjin is already engaged, mentions of drinking, hints of family drama and abusive parents.

Kim Seokjin is a lot of things. 

He is twinkling eyes, cherry smiles, summer warmth, blossom pink and a comforting scent. 

He is also dad jokes, broad shoulders, obnoxious-ear-shuttering laugh, long legs and annoyingly himself. 

But most importantly….

He is the man you are in love with. Also, the man who loves someone that isn’t you, will never be you. 

The realization, the acceptance, the constant reminder.. Everything is bitter. Far more bitter than the whiskey on the tip of your tongue. This brown liquid does nothing to numb your pain but you don’t complain, not when it has been your sole companion for most of the night of your company party. 

Even though your eyes are trained on your glass, you don’t miss the long steps that Seokjin takes to reach where you are sitting currently. 

Why does he always find you? Why does he go an extra mile to be nice to you? Why does he do all those things and make your heart flutter and make you fall more and more only to leave you stranded with your wants and desires because he is meant for someone else? 

You don’t have any answers. 

“She has been following me for the better part of the night!” Seokjin whisper-yells in your ear as he lowers himself down to sit beside you on a bar stool. You divert your eyes from the glass and look at him.. only to find his brown orbs boring into yours. But not the way you’d like. Not the way you want. 

He moves his eyeballs in a manner of gesturing the ‘she’ he just mentioned. 

It’s a new recruit. 

Her name must be Dan-ri or Dan-mi, you can’t quite recall. But what you can recall is that she has her eyes set on Seokjin from her very first day. 

You suppose, she doesn't know yet that Seokjin is taken. Wait till he drops the bomb and breaks another heart alongside yours. 

Your ears perk at the sound of her red heels clicking on the marble floor, a perfect set of white teeth flashing at the man for the umpteenth time in the evening.

Annoying. You take a sip from your glass.

"Mr. Kim, I thought you're gonna come back with your drink and we would have a dance!" Dan-ri or Dan-mi whines at her high pitched voice. 

You roll your eyes staring at another direction. 

"Ah- I would love to but I haven't gotten to spend time with my favourite colleague yet." Seokjin says, pointing at you. 

You smile at the girl, a fake one obviously.

"Oh?" Her eyes widen when Seokjin winds a hand around your shoulder, pulling you a little closer to his body. 

You want to run away far and far from this man. You want to put an end to this suffering but you can't help relaxing at his warmth. You melt in his embrace, putting your heart at ease, telling yourself 'just this once. I will distance myself afterwards.' again and again like chanting a mantra. 

"Am I interrupting something?" The girl is more determined than you expected her to be. She doesn't leave, rather settles herself down on the barstool right next to Seokjin's. 

Seokjin chuckles at her question, "It's not what you think, Dan-mi. Y/N is my favorite colleague cum one of my most favorite human beings. And I am engaged." 

The words pierce through your ears, hit your heart and break it into a thousand pieces all over again. Tears start prickling your eyes, so you shut them as tightly as possible. 

And suddenly you're in a flashback of your life.

After suffering from verbally and borderline physically abusive parents, a broken home, multiple failed relationships, failed attempts of being in love and being loved… you finally found yourself falling for a man who was already betrothed to someone else, who can't be yours no matter how many lifetimes you wait. 

Seokjin's embrace now feels too constricted, too hot to be comfortable anymore. So you break free. 

Jerking out of Seokjin's arms, you sit straight. But your actions (or disappointments) seemingly have no impact on him. 

He continues, "my fiancé and I have been in a relationship for 10 years now. Highschool sweethearts you know?" A sweet smile takes over his face, probably upon painting an image of his lover in imagination, "we're soon to be married." 

As soon as he finishes off, you stand up from your place, take your purse and utter a small bye to the man. 

This is too much and you can’t suffer any longer. Having your heart broken everyday with the reminder is one thing but him, sitting right beside you, gushing about his fiancé, while knowing nothing about your feelings towards him, hurts ten thousand times more. 

"Y/N! Wait! Let's go together. I'll drop you." You find Seokjin shouting as the distance between you two increases bit by bit. 

You turn back for one last time, facing him, you part your lips and say, "not this time, Jin. It's better if I move on." 

You know he hasn't heard you, the music is on full blast and there's at least 5 hands of distance between you two.

But the words are for you to hear… more than anyone else.  

So, you take your steps forward and leave him behind for his good and mostly for yours.
