The Silver Kitsune
A/N: This is for an assignment for my Beyond Superheros Comics class (the name is longer, I'm shortening it for you). For this assignment, we had to create a character that would fit into the comic world of Watchmen.
Now for this assignment, I got 100% on it which I am OVER THE MOON SOOO EXCITED about.
My professor even said "Wow! Such a well-imagined and well-written character... I love how you hold back details from the reader as well as the characters in the story to increase their impact. Clever integration into the book's plot, and real-world tie-ins with the blizzard! I think Alan Moore would be impressed... I certainly am. Thanks for a great read! :)"
To everyone reading, I hope you enjoy this because I know I was having a blast creating it.
Love you all, Pandemonium -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Journal #2 April 14, 1974 My hair has turned silver. The scientist says I am no longer the woman I was before and I have been given the ability to choose my name to join the new age of masked adventurers (or so to be determined, the government is trying to enact a new law banning these masked people). My name will be Silver Kitsune like the hair on my head and the abilities I have been given for doing all things mischievous. From what I was told, I can cause frozen blasts, transport things from a different area of town and become invisible. The invisible thing intrigues me. Goodbye to Aurora Goodwell and hello to the new me.
Journal #14 August 10, 1974 I know I haven't written anything in a long time, I have been more than busy with training. The government has finally released me from the confines of the lab. They say I am good to rejoin normal society and do as I please. I must not tell anyone what I can do, or there will be major complications. I am thankful for being gone. Jon weirded me out. It was like he had a cool disregard for anything living and breathing. They say I was created like him, but why am I not like him? Why do I not act like I have no emotions? Will this come with time? Please don't let this come with time.
Journal #15 August 11, 1974 I met Rorschach. This came after I froze the thieving bastard he was chasing after. I hadn't even known the guy was a murderer until Rorschach told me what he had done. I took the knife from his hand and stabbed it into the chest of the frozen man. I introduced myself to him by my real name, Aurora. Rorschach invited me for drinks as a sort of thank you for catching the guy I was chasing and making my job easier. He told me I would be meeting some colleagues. I am to meet them at the bar on 8th at 8 sharp. Ironic.
Journal #15 Continued August 12, 1974 It was a hit! The night went great and I am sure I made some friends. It makes me feel better considering I remember nothing of my past aside from my name Aurora Goodwell – which the scientists told me – and my age, 29 – which again, the scientists told me. I know nothing of friends or family, or even pets and though that frightens me, I will not push too hard. Maybe in the future, I will tell Rorschach, he seems like a man that can keep secrets. Now back to why I am making this entry, I did not tell them what I could do. Not comfortable enough yet. Rorschach knows and thinks it is cool. I made him swear he would say nothing unless he wanted me to freeze him solid. Not wanting that, he agreed. Instant acquaintanceship. He told me I could become an adventurer like the rest of them and I thought this was a great idea and so I told him my idea of a costumed name.
Journal #16 August 23, 1974 I must say, this costume makes me feel powerful. As I look in the full-body mirror, it hits me. I never thought these powers would amount to anything but harmless pranks and childish fun, but they are being used for good. The outfit Nite Owl (Dan Dreiberg) helped create for me that shows off my name. I told him of these powers since I had no idea where to begin. It is simple, dyed silver and silky fabric that hugs close, a belt with multiple black and silver tails connect to the front. The face mask is silver and looks like a fox face to the snout and goes over my head with a spot for my hair to come out in a ponytail. --- The group went out crime-fighting tonight, and though everyone has their attributes when working together, I just can't do it well. I found that I get overwhelmed easily when all together. When we split up, I felt much more comfortable, it was easier. I was chasing a thief, he had connections to the drug ring we were trying to take out. He wasn't too far ahead of me. I became invisible in the hopes that he would think he got away and it worked. He peered over his shoulder and not seeing me anymore slowed to a stop. This is when I reappeared in front of him and punched him the face! I was surprised he did not put up more of a fight, he looked deflated and gave up. I contacted the rest of them and shared the news of my first minor success. The adrenaline of the chase pumped through my veins and I felt alive. I was the Silver Kitsune, here to stay.
Journal #163 November 5, 1976 THEY COULD HAVE TOLD ME THAT MY PARENTS ARE ALREADY DEAD! Those awful scientists, they kept such important information from me! I know I said years ago that I would not worry about it, but this had always been a sore spot, especially seeing Laurie with her mom Sally on occasion. They were murdered when I was a teen, I remember this now. Though I remember nothing before or after, I remember the news from the officer that pulled me to the office in high school, telling me the awful news. They were murdered. I remember the office feeling colder as my emotions plummeted and I sobbed on the floor. New York City is suddenly going through a cold spout, it is normally cold, but not this cold.
Journal #168 December 25, 1976 Rorschach and I are getting closer. Today as a Christmas present, he told me his name and took his mask off. He is Walter Kovacs and his hair is bright red hair. He told me he cannot bear to see his face, but I think it looks wonderful. He tells me the mask is his true face, the one he wants to be known for and if that is what he wishes, that is what it will be. This entry is short, but Walter or Rorschach, if you ever read this, I have grown feelings for you. I may never tell you this, but it is here and safe.
Journal #170 January 29, 1977 It appears I am the cause of this major blizzard that started yesterday. Lake Erie had already frozen over completely earlier this month and the snow is piling higher and higher as time passes. I was spending a night with Walter when it all came back to me. It hit me hard. I was kidnapped by the government in the middle of making my first novel to become their experiment for what I am today. Though the whole process was torture. I was kept in a small cold cell that smelled of mould. When I wasn't in the cell they were poking and prodding at me with needles and other scary looking instruments. I remember being in constant pain, it was not similar to the creation of Dr. Manhattan at all. When I came out of it this time, I was on the floor in Rorschach's arms and I was howling. It took me a moment to regain my thoughts and realize I was clutching his muscular arm and had a fistful of his shirt in the other. What do I do if the government punishes me for this?
Journal #171 February 2, 1977 The blizzard has ended. The snowdrifts have pilled higher than telephone poles and are covering cars. I discovered that 29 people were killed. Many of them froze to death in buried cars. I cried when I heard that in Walter's arms. He doesn't show it, but he is a sweetheart when he wants to be. I honestly didn't mean to harm anyone when the blizzard happened. I had no idea that I could even use my power to this extent. We are not allowed to leave our homes, not like we even can with the snow piled so high. I guess I will be here for a while, sorry buddy. If you ever read this, know I enjoyed our time together.
Journal #173 August 3, 1977 And so, it has happened. The Keene act was put in place, they said a big factor of it was the blizzard earlier this year... oops. It angers me to think that the government does not want to keep everyone safe. I had earlier been asked to relieve myself to someone and retire, but that is not happening. I refuse to abide by the Keene act and put my mask away. Others have given themselves up already – Dan Drieberg and Laurie Juspeczyk along with everyone else, but that will not be me. I will keep fighting crime. These people do not understand that there are just somethings cops cannot do. Beating a bad guy for information? They cannot do that, but I can. Rorschach said he refused as well. We are now fugitives, should we get caught well, it's jail time for us, right? It is just me and him against the world of crime and the world of politics.
Journal #175 October 12, 1985 The Comedian is dead. He was killed by someone in his own home. Though I never really liked him much, this does not mean his death has not shaken me badly. Rorschach thinks someone is out to get masked adventures and said we should now begin watching our backs more frequently. This terrifies me. I knew our job is dangerous, but what have I done to life to have someone feel the need to hunt me down and kill me? I have not written in this journal for a very long time. I only just recently found it hidden in my closet at Walters. I guess I should break the news that we moved in together some time ago. It was maybe the best feeling in the world aside from that first high I got way back in 1974 after my first stopped criminal. We have become partners in more than just crime, but in life as well, but this is a secret meant just for us. I looked at the blood-soaked ground as Walter walks through it, sign in hand. "THE END IS NIHG" when he made that, he told me of the true face of the world. Through all the smiling and dense ignorance and glitz and glam lies a truly violent and disgusting world. The world we live in, the world we fight against. The true world across the whole world. The Comedian knew this and so do we. Life, I feel, will become much more interesting than it has been. I have yet to tell Walter that I am carrying his child, five months in. I can still fight and investigate, and that is what I plan to do.
Journal #176 October 21, 1985 Rorschach was arrested. He was setup I know it! After he went to speak with Moloch again, we noticed he was already dead. He told me to run, he knew something I didn't and I got away. I am thinking of hanging low for a while, but I want to keep investigating and help him. I am currently trying to find a new lead. Once this case is done, I think retirement is inevitable.
Journal #177 October 31, 1985 Dan and Laurie stopped by, they said they had a surprise and it turns out they got Walter out of prison. I was ecstatic when I saw him. He stepped into the small apartment we shared to get a new mask. "I'm pregnant," I accidentally blurted out. At first, he seemed angry then he was worried and banned me from any more work. The more I tried to protest the more stubborn he became, so I stayed behind. I also told him that because of this little bun, I am going to retire, he agreed. I just wished it would be after this was over.
Journal Entry #178 November 2, 1985 I am tired of being cooped up in the house. Walter has been gone for a while and I am bored and hungry. I'm thinking of Italian food today. At least that's what the baby wants. It's near Maddison Square Garden, I have not been there in a while. I remember that place, it was near the bar I went to with the guys on 8th. I'm looking forward to some good food, a nice cool drink and some good music. I hope that Rorschach can take a moment to rest and enjoy the day with me soon, I miss him already.

@me-fish asked about my Watchmen OCs, so here’s the deeply self-indulgent story that’s just been sitting in my head since I got into Watchmen. This gets very dark and messed up, so warnings for: Nazis, trauma, trauma being worked through in unhealthy ways, abusive family relationships, un-German names for German characters and wanton messing with the Watchmen canon.
Okay, so first things first, this starts in an alternate version of Germany rather than America, just after World War One and there are crazy vigilantes there too. The story begins with Theo Wolf senior, who is the father of my main character. Now, Theo went through some pretty rough stuff in the trenches, and what with with the wonderful attitudes to mental health care, he just didn’t recover from them properly. He has exactly one friend, Heinrich (we’ll get to this guy in a moment) who he fought beside in the trenches. He ends up working through his problems by becoming a vigilante called the Shooter. As the Shooter he is basically Rorschach with a gun and a motorcycle, and he just wears a black balaclava. Hey, he doesn’t have much money or imagination, ok? I see him as looking something like this:
Now the brains of the operation here is actually his wife Anna. Anna is an heiress, although most of the family money’s been lost, and the whole world thinks she’s too good for Theo. She’s beautiful, brilliant, talented and secretive, and as thoroughly messed up as her husband. She moonlights as a vigilante called the Shadow, but she mostly doesn't really have to because her methods are much more subtle than everyday crime fighting. She mostly targets wealthy criminals, charms her way into their social circles, and gains access to their homes one way or another. After investigating them carefully, she utterly destroys them, either by outing them in ways that can’t be smoothed over, or by terrorizing them as the Shadow until they turn themselves in. Also, she carries a sword as the Shadow, because that’s cool and I like Kill Bill. Here’s what she looks like:
Now these two are... more or less a functioning team for about ten years, and their marriage pretty much works. They have a son, Theo junior, and manage to shield him from the effects of their crimefighting. But as things get... worse (pre wwii Germany, remember?) Anna has a bit of a personal crisis. She feels they’re just not doing enough good, and unless they make a difference, what’s the point of what they do? She starts getting in over her head, taking on bigger and bigger targets, until one day, she’s approached by an intelligence agency. Now I could never decide if it’s an English, German or American network, but they blackmail her into working for them, and this is where things start to fall apart. She’s forced to leave her family at some point, and pronounced legally dead.
This is where things really start to go to hell. Because Theo Senior is a codependent mess when it comes to his wife. He sulks around for a long time, unsure how to look after a kid on his own, then ends up getting arrested as the Shooter. His friend Max gets custody of Theo Junior, and basically hushes up the whole thing.
Max... is not a good choice of father figure. He raises Theo Junior was well as he knows how, which basically means keeping him under his thumb while Max flirts with every political party vying for power in the country. He eventually places his bets on the Nazi party, because hey, what could go wrong there?
Theo Junior and Max have a difficult relationship. You can’t help loving your foster-father, but Max is pretty controlling and tyrannical, and Theo brings his own problems to the mix. He’s stubborn, brilliant, unreliable and recklessly honest. He becomes a police detective though he’d certainly be thrown out of the force of Max didn’t protect him. Over the next ten years he proceeds to piss off some very important people, a fact that he will come to regret.
When things get... worse, Theo becomes a major liability for Max. Max, being in deep with the Party at this point, feels that he has two choices: he can let his foster-son go on embarrassing him until he gets himself killed and Max disgraced, or he can do something about it. That ‘something’ ends up being getting Theo imprisoned. With Theo safely locked away, Max can get on with his career, which ends up being a very bloody one.
Arsehole.
Skip a few years. Theo, rather damaged and upset, leaves the ruins of Berlin for America. He’s clear in his own mind what happened: A monster, who on some level he still sees as a second father, kept him subservient for years before finally betraying him. Through all that time, he forgot his real heritage - didn’t his parents fight people like this? And isn’t he sort-of complicit in Max’s crimes, if only because he didn’t stop him? In America, he steals a ton of money from the local crime rings and uses it to set up a new identity. By day he is Walt Wolf, a rude German-American socialite. By night though, he is a vigilante, Red Mask. Here’s what he looks like in and out of costume:
His sole purpose is to seek out German war criminals being employed by the US government and bring them to justice. One day, he’s sure, he can find and confront Max. In the process though, he meets a friendly ornithologist called Dan Dreiberg. The begin a partnership/sort-of relationship, that allows Theo to heal, a little, from the past. Dreiberg is mourning the death of his last partner, and his friendship with Theo helps him stop dwelling on the past. As for Theo, Dreiberg’s influence causes him to re-evaluate what exactly he wants from all this. Is it justice? Revenge? Both? Is he planning to kill Max when he finds him, or turn him in? Make your own mind up, because I certainly haven’t.
What is Dan doing there? Where’s Rorschach? Hey, I told you this was self-indulgent! Dan is there, and Rorschach is dead, and how that works is not my problem! Dan is hunting war criminals with an angry vigilante, so don’t tell me that’s not a good payoff :-D

Film Review: Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut (2009)
On the tenth anniversary of the film Watchmen’s theatrical release, I decided to rewatch the film, only this time, I would watch the film’s Ultimate Cut. Whereas the theatrical cut ran approximately 2 hours and 42 minutes (including closing credits), the Ultimate Cut ran at 3 hours and 35 minutes (again, including closing credits). Having watched this film as a teenager and loving it to the point that for a few years, I’d called it my favorite film ever, I went into watching the Ultimate Cut with trepidation; I had feared that now that I was in my adulthood, I might not look so favorably toward the film as I had when I was a teen. I also feared that if I were to still enjoy the film, I hoped that it would not stem from a blind sense of nostalgia and that I would look upon this less favorably anyway. A similar feeling came over me a few years ago when I had rewatched Tim Burton’s Batman.
So what did I think of the Ultimate Cut of Watchmen? i absolutely loved it, and what few gripes I do have with it are so minute that I wished I wouldn’t even have to mention them here. And I can say with utmost certainty that not only did this movie stand the (albeit so far small) test of time of a decade, but if anything, it made me wonder if this film would have been more successful, critically and financially, if it had been released sometime this decade, what with R-rated films like Deadpool and Logan being so successful in both areas.
But enough about all this prelude. What was it that I loved about this film? What I love about this film, as I did when I was a teenager, was something that had been simultaneously praised and criticized even at the time of this film’s release, which was its faithful adherence to the source material and making only the most necessary of changes for it to be at all filmable. The film’s strength stems largely because of the graphic novel from which it is based, as Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen is not only considered to be one of the greatest comics of all time, it’s considered a landmark piece of English literature in general such that it, as a piece of the superhero genre, can be studied on serious thematic levels in colleges and universities (I’d cite my sources, but admittedly, I am quite lazy in that regard; but don’t take my word for it, look it up).
The film, like the graphic novel, is set in a fairly realistic world, much like our own in 1985, but with the twist of superheroes existing within it. The story showcases these heroes’ now-outlawed influence on this world, as that influence (namely from Dr. Manhattan) has led the U.S. and U.S.S.R. to the point where nuclear Armageddon is more of a possibility than even during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The plot follows the investigation of one such outlawed vigilante, Rorschach (who, btw, is one of my favorite characters in all of fiction), who is looking into the death of the Comedian, a controversial (to say the least) hero who has been mysteriously murdered. Rorschach’s investigation leads him to a “mask killer” theory that, as time goes on and the threat of nuclear annihilation looms ever so closer, gains more credence as more of his fellow heroes, including himself, are attacked by an unknown powerful figure. With the aid of Nite-Owl and Silk Spectre, two of his former colleagues, Rorschach aims to find out who the mask killer is and ultimately uncover the possibility of that killer’s involvement with the impending global doom.
The film’s plot, like the novel, is given a fair amount of focus and does get a resolution that is as satisfying as it was unexpected (something that Rian Johnson seems to have trouble with when it comes to Star Wars: The Last Jedi). However, both the film and comic’s attention on the plot itself is surprisingly minimal compared to its focus on its own character studies, which is the core strength of both the film and comic. So let’s go into our six lead characters.
1. Rorschach: As I mentioned before, Rorschach has been one of my favorite characters in all of fiction, and here, he is probably given the most faithful depiction on the silver screen. Jackie Earle Haley’s performance as Rorschach is, in my opinion, more Oscar-worthy than something like Black Panther, as it is abundantly clear just how well Haley understood this character. He portrays an incredibly damaged sociopath with an uncompromising view of black-and-white morality so well that it makes me sad that Haley never gets the respect for playing this character as well as Ryan Reynolds does for playing Deadpool, Hugh Jackman for Wolverine, Kevin Conroy or Michael Keaton for playing Batman, or Robert Downey, Jr. for playing Iron Man. My hat goes out to you, Mr. Haley. Your performance here rates 10/10 for me still. :)
2. Nite-Owl a.k.a. Dan Dreiberg: As a teenager, I had an underappreciation for both the character of Dan Dreiberg and for Patrick Wilson’s portrayal of him. While I thought then that Wilson had done a good job playing Dreiberg, I didn’t much care for the character in general as a teen, as I thought that he was just a boring everyman. As an adult, however, I found both the character and Wilson’s performance to be as important as, if not more than, Rorschach and Haley’s performance of that character. Wilson’s portrayal of a defeated, pathetic sad-sack of a human being who has an underlying anxiety concerning the threat of nuclear annihilation is an important emotional anchor point for the film (and comic, of course); as entertaining as Rorschach is, I can imagine that not a whole lot of people can relate to him on a deep level. If Rorschach is the Jack Sparrow of what I can loosely call an adventure here, Dreiberg is Will Turner; you might not like him as much as the guy who gets the attention for his craziness, but you realize you need him as the everyman if you want your story to really work.
3. Silk Spectre a.k.a. Laurie Jupiter: Unfortunately, while my opinion on Nite-Owl had changed, my opinion on Laurie Jupiter, as well as Malin Akerman’s performance, has not. I hate to say it, but she’s essentially the female equivalent of Dreiberg, and while she does have some interesting emotional turmoil going on, I don’t find the character to be particularly likable. And I think the biggest reason for that stems from Akerman’s performance; I find her to be too wooden and bland in her delivery. While Akerman does make the character more likable than in the comic, her eye candy appeal doesn’t distract me from the unconvincing performance that she delivers throughout the film.
4. Dr. Manhattan a.k.a. Jon Osterman: A character, and performance courtesy of Billy Crudup, that I gained more appreciation for, like Dreiberg and Wilson’s depiction of that character. The nihilism and disconnection from humanity that serves as the basis for Dr. Manhattan is one that is properly delivered by Crudup’s deliberately robotic performance, and as a character, he stands out as incredibly unique in fiction. As a fan of Rick and Morty, I find Dr. Manhattan to be what Rick Sanchez would be if he had less personalty and gave even less of a shit about the universe in which he inhabits. A nihilistic character can be hard to pull off without coming off as boring, yet the writing and Crudup’s performance manage to almost perfectly convey someone who maybe layered in disinterest, but who, at his core, still retains enough of a sliver of humanity that he wishes to find any reason to still be a part of it.
5. The Comedian a.k.a. Eddie Blake: Now here is a character that you probably wouldn’t see much of in the superhero genre. As unique as Dr. Manhattan is when it comes to his nihilism, Edward Morgan Blake is probably what would happen if Rick Sanchez were actually grounded in reality and his actions had legitimate consequences. Jeffrey Dean Morgan manages to play a despicable human being so incredibly well that even though he says and does some genuinely heinous things, like attempted rape or shooting a pregnant woman dead out of anger for slashing his face with a broken beer bottle because he wouldn’t agree to raise the baby that he impregnated her with, he still manages to come off as understandable and believably human. This is especially highlighted in a scene where he actually breaks down crying to someone who had been his enemy for decades. It’s a shockingly real depiction of a monster who is still all too human and it’s one that I don’t think would be depicted in the mainstream media these days.
6. Ozymandias a.k.a. Adrian Veidt - As a teen, I thought that Matthew Goode’s performance as Veidt was dull, but now, like with Wilson and Crudup’s performance of their respective characters in this film, I now consider his performance to be an incredibly strong one. While giving this character a much more sinister and menacing air than the more tragic atmosphere surrounding Veidt in the comic, I can now assess that Goode is able to deliver a performance that is quite respectable for someone who can be reasonably argued to be the film and comic’s true hero rather than its villain. I don’t find it to be nearly to the same caliber as Josh Brolin’s performance as Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, but I’d say it’s at least within the same ballpark.
Now that we’re past the characters, I have to mention the extras that are part of the Ultimate Cut of this film and whether or not I think they add or subtract from the film’s quality overall. I can really only think of two scenes that I thought were unnecessary. The first is one early on that I thought made no sense, in which Rorschach somehow managed to survive being shot by a cop without even so much as flinching; it wasn’t even something that was from the book either, so what the hell? Also, I thought that including Hollis Mason’s death in the film was unnecessary, as it doesn’t really have a resolution, and that’s a criticism that I levy at the comic as well. However, in spite of these somewhat weak bits, I felt that the film’s inclusion of the Tales from the Black Freighter is one that lends some very interesting thematic weight to the film’s main story, just as that did in the comic. The Black Freighter sections were incredibly well animated, Gerard Butler put in a fantastic performance as the Captain, and it was a great representation of the comic-within-a-comic; I have no complaints here, but I do understand why it had to ultimately be cut from the film’s theatrical cut.
In conclusion, the film adaptation of Watchmen, as bolstered through most of the extra material of its Ultimate Cut, is not only an excellent adaptation of its source material, even if Alan Moore didn’t want his name attached to it, but it’s also a great film in its own right that I find to be incredibly underrated. I rate this movie 9.5/10.

Why Nite Owl is the Best Character in ‘Watchmen’
Many art forms over the years have had difficulty finding the respect they deserve when they first start out. It’s only natural; new ideas tend to get the shaft by older generations afraid of change “corrupting the country” because apparently centuries of social and scientific innovation can be brought crumbling down by some little yellow cartoon kid saying “don’t have a cow, man”. Every form of artistic expression has had to battle censorship, unwarranted criticism and senseless conspiracy in their day, be it music, film, comedy, animation, video games. Even BOOKS were condemned as tools for evil by the earliest philosophers of human history.
“[Writing] will create forgetfulness in the learners’ souls, because they will not use their memories; they will trust to the external written characters and not remember of themselves.” - Socrates
Comic books are no different. Matter of fact, they might just be the most prominent example of this. They’ve been credited time and time again for influencing youth to a life of crime and ignorance, especially in probably the most infamous case of anti-comic book propaganda, Friedric Wertham’s The Seduction of the Innocent, which made such bombastic claims as suggesting Batman and Robin are encouraging the youth to engage in homosexual affairs (different time folks, different time. Fun fact though; that’s why Batgirl was invented, to give Batman a girlfriend for his time to dispute such claims).
*Though to be fair, when you read these hilarious panels out of context you can sort of see some brow-raising implications. This is why context matters.*
But the upside to the battles every medium faces is that eventually along will come a masterpiece that breaks the mold. A revolutionary bit of literary work that changes the way we look at the medium long after it premieres. When it comes to comic books, if you ever find somebody telling you it’s not real art or it’s just kid stuff, you tell them to read motherfucking WATCHMEN. Written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons, Watchmen is a timelessly cryptic tale of washed up former heroes, godlike beings with humanity slipping away and debates on proper ethics, all under the tension of a cold war stricken America where everyone feels like they can die at any moment. The story has went on to be recognized as one of New York times 100 greatest novels in 2005, joining the ranks of Catcher in the Rye and Clockwork Orange. And it’s praise is rightfully earned. The compelling murder mystery, the growing tension between military forces, the intricate detail of an alternate history Cold War, the play on themes like science, religion, morality and nostalgia, all brought together through beautiful silver age inspired artwork and masterful frame composition that makes the reader feel like their watching a movie.
Of course, being such a classic in the comic book world, it has equally iconic characters, which are all very original (ironic since they’re all basically reskinned Charlton Comics characters invented by Steve Ditko). The most commonly favorited and analyzed among fans being Rorschach, the conspiracy buff ruthless vigilante who is the black-and-white moral compass (though he’s not nearly as black and white as people give him credit for, we’ll get to that in a bit), Dr. Manhattan, the all powerful allegory for both God AND the atom bomb who is ever so slowly losing his grip on his own humanity, and the Comedian, the nihilistic, alcoholic, sex offender soldier who sees life as a monstrous joke and dies not having the last laugh. Those characters are all well and good, but there is one character I’ve grown particularly fond of whom I don’t think gets enough recognition for just how fascinating his dilemma and growth is. That is of course Daniel Dreiberg, the every-man turned superhero Nite Owl.
In order to fully appreciate Nite Owl, we’ll need to recap some context from the story. I’ve already touched upon how one of the major themes of the story is Nostalgia. After all, nearly every character in this story is distraught about the oncoming terror of the Cold War getting hot and they all want to remember a simpler time when it was clear who the bad guy was and what to do about it. Nobody embodies this theme more then Dan Dreiberg. He’s had a passion for crime fighting since he was very young, so much so that he used his fathers inheritance to develop crime fighting gear and tech and took on the mantle of Nite Owl after the original, Hollis Mason, had long since retired. Many of the other characters only became heroes because they were thrown into their situations by one force or another, but Dan had a longing to be a problem solver who wanted to defend the innocent and uphold the law in the most fun and dramatic way possible. When he wore the goggles he felt like there was no problem too large for him to handle. He was hopeful and he was optimistic.
“No matter how black it got, when I looked through these goggles . . . everything was clear as day.” - Ch. 7, pg 9, panel 8-9
Of course, after the Keenes act passed which outlawed vigilante justice, Dan was forced to begrudgingly hang up the cape. His confidence and vigor was seemingly forever trapped down in his basement, collecting dust. He became overweight. He grew timid and insecure. He let Rorschach walk all over him and abuse their friendship when they used to be trusted partners. He lived on in denial of what he truly wanted. He loved Laurie Juspeczyk for years but never confessed it, and even when he had the chance to embrace Laurie in sex he felt impotent and out of place. The dire feeling of living without meaning haunted his every move, and he was tired of being held on into a life of mediocrity.
“It’s this war. The feeling that it’s unavoidable. It makes me feel so powerless. So impotent.” - Ch. 7, pg 19, panel 8-9
It’s only when he puts the mask back on and willingly breaks the law holding him down that he starts to feel happy again. He begins to smile, he feels more positive about what to do about the cold war hanging over his head and Rorschach’s mask killer conspiracy. He’s finally able to satisfy Laurie sexually, and he even starts standing up to Roschach for all the shit he puts him through.
“I feel so confident it’s like I’m on fire. And all the mask killers, all the wars in the world, they’re just cases--problems to solve” - Ch. 7, pg 28, panel 5
“Listen, I've had it! Who the hell do you think you are? You live off people while insulting them, nobody complains because they think you’re a goddamned lunatic . . . you know how hard it is, being your friend?” - Ch. 10, pg 16, panel 5
The reason why I appreciate this so much is because Nite Owl embodies why we love superheroes: because they ARE problem solvers. They DO take on larger then life challenges, and they always find a way to put evil in it’s place. They enable us to have a more optimistic outlook and they prove that not only is doing the right thing possible, but it can be really fun too! Readers feel more empowered and enthusiastic when reading about the latest adventures of their heroes, because suddenly huge problems aren’t so scary anymore. It’s why comic books were so popular as anti Nazi and Japanese propaganda in WW2 and why superheroes skyrocketed in popularity throughout the decades of the cold war.
Nite Owl loves everything old fashioned. It’s why his childhood hero was the first Nite Owl Hollis Mason and why he spends so much of his time trapped in the past, always talking to Hollis about the old days and constantly visiting his basement to ponder them. He even demonstrates his longing for older times in extremely subtle ways, like his personal taste in music is all classic stuff and he’s out of touch on modern lingo.
“Oh well, mostly I’m into Billie Holiday, Nellie Lutcher, Louis Jordan . . . stuff like that.” - Ch. 7, pg 10, panel 3.
Generally speaking Dan’s dilemma in the story and his evolution as a character is a lot more underplayed and nuance then other character arcs, which I actually really appreciate. The book is fantastic, but I often felt like for other characters they basically just spell out their own character synopsis for the reader and leave little to the imagination. Rorschach and Dr. Manhattan especially had this issue in my opinion. Their character specific chapters didn’t rely very much on context clues or allowing the panels to tell the story (except for in certain instances), instead they basically just monologue to themselves on what they’re all about and why they do what they do. Plus as I stated briefly before I feel like Rorschach is a bit overrated, especially when they describe him as “seeing morality in black and white”. He’s made more then a few compromises and weird judgements in the story. There’s the more understandable example of when he refuses to beat the woman who made false assault allegations on him on tv because her kids were watching, but then there’s also the time where he describes the Comedians rape attempt on the first silk spectre as a “moral lapse”. Since when does the “black and white morality” character believe in moral lapses? Especially ones for topics as touchy as rape? pages later he breaks a guy in a bars set of fingers because the dude said he smelled bad behind his back. So let me get this straight: attempted rape is a moral lapse, but somebody saying you smell bad behind your back is punishable by finger breaking?? Seems to me Rorschach cares more about his reputation in the underworld then actually maintaining black and white morality. He even admits how much his reputation matters to him.
“Can’t. Serious Business. Slur on reputation.” - Ch. 10, pg 6, panel 5
But anyway, I've gone on enough tangents in this post. My point is that this graphic novel is phenomenal and a must-read for fans wanting to get into comic books or even literature in general. I just wanted to talk about an aspect not appreciated often enough, and how excellently it’s portrayed. There’s a reason Nite Owl is my favorite character and my favorite chapter is “A Brother to Dragons”. He articulates the theme of nostalgia perfectly and is a wonderful allegory for the reader and every man just trying to find an outlet for his problems. Plus he brings some much needed positivity and relief into an otherwise mercilessly dark and pessimistic book. It’s a shame Nite Owl all too often gets the shaft, even in his own story arc in the Before Watchmen series (which I have a bit of a distaste for because the artwork is way too layered in thick sketchy linework to be appealing and sometimes Rorschach just straight up hijacks the story). Hopefully this post will bring him some much deserved recognition.

How Patrick Wilson prepped to fight Jason Momoa in ‘Aquaman’
The cryptic textual content got here in 2015 from director James Wan: “Are you aware Ocean Grasp?” Patrick Wilson didn’t, in reality, know Ocean Grasp, or whether or not it was an individual, a cruise ship or maybe a sequence of all-you-can-eat seafood eating places. “Fortunately in this point in time, there’s Google,” Wilson says, miming livid thumb-typing as he sips espresso in a Chelsea picture studio. “Ocean Grasp? Seems to be cool. Oh, cool masks.” Seems, Ocean Grasp — aka Orm — is the ruler of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis and the archnemesis of Aquaman. And Wilson should have expertly bluffed Wan together with his information of undersea villains, as a result of later this month, he dons Ocean Grasp’s (curiously unrusted) armor for “Aquaman.” Taking part in reverse Jason Momoa, who reprises his position because the titular hero, introduced a selected problem for Wilson. “Jason is like 6-foot-4,” says the 6-foot-even Wilson. “Once I signed on, I mentioned to James, ‘I need to get huge for the position.’ You need to be a formidable opponent.” Wilson, a CrossFit devotee, hit the health club with a coach 5 days every week for 4 months. He jumped from 190 kilos to 210, and continues to look fairly jacked months later, carrying a easy white T-shirt. Éditions M.R “Laurent” jacket, $568 at Matches Trend; Rag & Bone sweater, $395 at Saks Fifth Avenue, 611 Fifth Ave.Matt Holyoak Taking part in a scene-chewing undersea villain who rides a large prehistoric crocodile and provides verbose speeches concerning the destruction of the oceans could appear to be a left-field selection for Wilson, who made his identify onstage and in acclaimed dramas together with 2006’s “Little Youngsters” and one of many buzziest episodes of “Women.” However the actor says he got here to admire the over-the-top nature of the superhero style after enjoying Nite Owl/Dan Dreiberg in 2009’s dystopian comic-book epic “Watchmen.” “I just like the theatrical nature of it,” he says. “In my earlier movies and in my theater days, it was internalized and all behind the eyes — I like issues that push me bodily and emotionally and make me get out of my consolation zone.” Case in level? The latest horror hits Wilson has starred in, together with “The Conjuring” and “Insidious” franchises, additionally made with Wan. “Whenever you’re giving an exorcism or talking Latin or damning a demon again to hell, you’ll be able to’t half-ass any of it,” Wilson says. “It requires that extra-theatrical or melodramatic contact, fueled with actual feelings. It had to be one thing nearly otherworldly.” Exorcisms and tylosaurs — few would have predicted this sort of profession path for a child rising up in Florida. However Wilson was raised in a showbiz-friendly family alongside two brothers. His father was an area TV-news anchor, his mom a choir director who gave voice classes. Wilson’s first industrial, when he was 7, was for Vess, an off-brand cola out of St. Louis. He performed reverse Cardinals soccer nice Dan Dierdorf. By his teenage years, Wilson was enjoying soccer and baseball and likewise appearing in stage productions at his tiny highschool. “There weren’t sufficient youngsters, so we did the whole lot,” he recollects. At age 16, he ditched sports activities to consider appearing. He later attended Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon College, throwing himself utterly into appearing and incomes a drama diploma. Like numerous his classmates, Wilson headed to the Massive Apple, in 1995. “I got here to New York with $1,000 saved up, an Fairness card and an agent. I used to be stacked,” he says. “New York didn’t appear so distant. It appeared like, ‘We’re gonna do it.’” He, his then-girlfriend and her brother all moved right into a two-bedroom rental at 525 W. 49th St., #5D. “It was shady on the West Aspect. No one went previous 10th Avenue then, man,” he says. “My girlfriend’s brother acquired mugged a couple of blocks away inside his first six months.” However inside every week, Wilson had landed his first theater position. Extra adopted, and by 2000 he was singing and dancing on Broadway in “The Full Monty” — a task that earned him a Tony nomination. Throughout his run, he was solid in HBO’s adaptation of “Angels in America.” “Whenever you’re the brand new man and also you’re in the [televised version of] arguably the best play of the century, [Hollywood] simply goes, ‘Oh, OK. You possibly can act,’” Wilson says. “Despite the fact that they could by no means have seen it.” Burton x Carhartt WIP jacket, $230 at Burton; Prime, $78 at Outerknown; Engineered Clothes pants, $265 at Mr Porter. Matt Holyoak Junya Watanabe x Carhartt jacket, $1,210 at Bloomingdale’s, 1000 Third Ave. AMI sweater, $350 at Mr Porter; Denims, $225, related kinds at rag & bone. Matt Holyoak 3 View Slideshow Inside months, he’d landed roles in big-budget flicks “The Alamo” and the movie model of “The Phantom of the Opera.” His guiding profession precept has all the time been variety — a field DC Comics’ “Aquaman” undoubtedly checks. Wilson performs the hero’s half-brother, who’s attempting to hold Momoa from claiming the throne. Not like Momoa, who spends numerous time on land, Wilson’s scenes happen in the underwater kingdom, requiring him to be a guinea pig for particular results. For instance, he wore a particular cap over his head, which allowed the filmmakers to later add CG hair that swayed and flowed as if underwater. Wilson and the opposite actors had been additionally strapped into harnesses that permit them swing across the set in order to simulate swimming. “Me and Willem [Dafoe, who plays royal advisor Vulko] geeked out over that swimming,” Wilson says. “We each felt like we had been performing some bizarre experimental play, and I liked it.” The actor says it was essentially the most bodily demanding position of his profession. However a undertaking so reliant on results naturally has the potential to go very flawed. Couple that with the truth that Aquaman has all the time been a little bit of a punchline in the superhero world, and the movie was hardly a positive factor. “I didn’t have any considerations,” Wilson says. “I knew if [Warner Bros.] gave James the keys to the dominion — in the event that they let him see by his imaginative and prescient, that it might be an fulfilling film.” The movie actually hews a lot nearer to the winking, popcorn tone perfected by rival Marvel’s movies, and seemingly tries to transfer away from the operatic bleakness of director Zack Snyder’s “Batman v Superman,” which first launched this model of Aquaman in 2016. “A part of the explanation for doing this film was as a result of it was lastly one my youngsters might watch,” he says. He and his spouse, actor Dagmara Dominczyk (whose sister, additionally an actor, is married to Scott Foley from “Scandal”), have two boys, ages 9 and 12. Wilson has already offered his youngest son with one thing few fathers can: The boy sleeps with an Orm motion determine beside his mattress. The household had been residing in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, however in search of extra space and a yard, packed up for Montclair, NJ. The subsequent cease for his or her youngsters, nevertheless, simply may be Hollywood. “My spouse and I dwell and breathe these things, so I’d by no means knock it,” Wilson says of his kids’s performing ambitions. “They know we didn’t get into this for stardom. Each time these phrases come out, we go, ‘Yeah, no. In order for you to be an actor, examine and go to college.’” Wilson will probably be seen subsequent yr in “Halfway,” a big-budget retelling of the epic World Battle II battle. He’s enjoying Rear Admiral Edwin Layton and at present capturing in Hawaii and Montreal.“It’s going to be a really truthful retelling,” Wilson says. “We labored with the Navy. I knew from early on, after they mentioned, ‘These are the precise glasses [my character] wore.’” For now, it’s unclear whether or not there will probably be an “Aquaman” sequel or if Orm will return. Wilson says he doesn’t assume there’s a “magic quantity” the movie has to hit to warrant a second. He guesses its success will probably be judged extra on “buzz.” If Orm doesn’t return, Wilson is content material together with his spandex oeuvre. “I like that, on the finish of the day, if my two forays into superheroes are Orm and Dan Dreiberg, that’s cool,” Wilson says. “That’s very odd, and I like odd issues.” Prada jacket, $3,850 at Bergdorf Goodman; Prime, $78 at Outerknown.Matt Holyoak Trend Editor: Serena French; Stylist: Anahita Moussavian; Groomer: Anthea King Share this: https://nypost.com/2018/12/11/how-patrick-wilson-prepped-to-fight-jason-momoa-in-aquaman/ The post How Patrick Wilson prepped to fight Jason Momoa in ‘Aquaman’ appeared first on My style by Kartia. https://www.kartiavelino.com/2018/12/how-patrick-wilson-prepped-to-fight-jason-momoa-in-aquaman.html

Hi guys😊😊
I just watched A Gifted Man, and I loved it 😍 it's just perfect, I loved the way the characters developed, and the bond they created throughout the episodes. Michael is an excellent professional and a wonderful person who just has to heal and free himself from his traumas. Despite his arrogant and arrogant ways ❤️ we can see how sensitive he is and who cares about others. An excellent series✨ I found the plot super creative and engaging, it's a crime that it was cancelled. Michael Holt is definitely one of my favorite characters ❤️ completely in love with him and all the characters. I will still hopefully wait for a second season. Ps: he's really talented, Michael plays piano and drums in the series, seeing him singing and playing with Zeke's band made me fall in love with him even more 😍 😍 😍 hahaha. OMG!!🤯 This is so sexy!!🫦🛐😍🔥✨
Can someone write a smut fanfic where you're a sassy, insolent, completely irresistible villain, always escaping the clutches of Nite Owl? He's been chasing you for months, but one rainy night, he finally finds you, invading your hiding place with the determination to arrest you. You begin a fight full of tension, exchanged blows, full of strategic movements and inevitable touches. In one agile movement, you manage to knock him down, placing yourself on top of him, your face very close to his. Both of their breathing is heavy, and you notice that Nite Owl is clearly shaken. He realizes how irresistible you are, your cheeky look, your provocative smile, your confident manner. Without missing the chance, you get even closer and steal a kiss from him, an audacious gesture that leaves him surprised and excited.
You almost believe you've won, but Nite Owl regains control, with a brutal movement he turns the situation around, placing himself on top of you, trapping your wrists above your head, leaving no room for escape. His eyes reflect something darker and irresistible. The thought is inevitable: you are too bold to get away with it. For him, perhaps it would be fairer to "teach him a lesson". He leans in, whispering in your ear that maybe you deserve to be "taught" not to underestimate him. Making it clear that, before going to prison, he will make you feel what it is like to be under his control. Your lips meet again, but this time he deepens the kiss, letting himself be carried away by the desire to explore every part of your body.
Dominant and determined making you regret, every touch, it's a mix of punishment and pleasure. Nite Owl decides to exploit your insolence to the end by immersing you. Where finally, you find yourself at the mercy of his touches, his control. And no matter how hard he tries to maintain his defiant attitude, he will show you who is really in control. With sexual tension, death threat, domination kink, swearing, degradation, battle for control, dominant Y/n and a disobedient sub, dominant Nite Owl, M+F masturbation, pussy slapping, M+F oral sex, deep throat, suffocation, face slaps, orgasm denial, multiple orgasms, difficult sex, angry sex, cum swallowing, hair pulling, Y/n completely submissive. Nite Owl makes her beg for your cock. (And anything you want!!)Pleaseee 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️✨
I've been working on this for a long time! So I hope you like it 🥰🥰 I'm super happy to finally post it😊😊✨
