JoJolion Ch. 77-82

This is the "Doctor Wu and Awaking III Leaves" arc. I just want to say that Awaking III Leaves has gotta be one of the dumbest Stand designs in this arc. It looks like the lampshade from the leg lamp in "A Christmas Story". Like Araki watched that movie and saw the leg lamp, and thought the shade was the most interesting part of it. Which does sound like him, I have to admit...

So last time there was another Stand Battle at the Higashikata orchard, and Jobin set the orchard on fire in a desperate gambit to pit his enemies against each other while he swiped the Locacaca branch. This seemed clever in the moment, but in the opening pages of the very next chapter, Rai Mamezuku immediately suspects Jobin of starting the fire. Josuke doesn't catch on, but Rai could tell just from how the Higashikatas each reacted as he explained to them who he was and what just happened. I could talk about what a keen observer Rai is, but in this case it's not very hard to piece this together.

Rai knows it wasn't Josuke, because Rai was with him in the bunker when it started.

Rai knows it wasn't Norisuke, because he's the one who asked Rai to help Josuke locate and secure the branch.

Rai knows it wasn't Poor Tom or his allies, because his plan was to eliminate everyone with his remote Stand ability. He only came to the orchard in response to the fire.

Rai knows it wasn't Hato, Joshuu, or Daiya, because they're all idiots who don't know what's been going on.

The thing is, I'm pretty sure Rai doesn't even know about Jobin's past dealings with the Rock Humans, which make him look even more suspicious. He just saw Jobin trying to keep Tsurugi calm every time Rai spoke about the Locacaca branch, and it seemed obvious to him.

On the other hand, Josuke is more concerned with the people in the ambulance who took the branch. What Josuke doesn't know is that it was the wrong branch. Tsurugi used his Stand to pull a switcheroo for Jobin. The people in the ambulance realized it was a fake as soon as they left Tsurugi's area of effect, but Josuke still believes the next move is to track down that ambulance.

Now at this point, you might be wondering: What happened to Mitsuba? Or you might even be asking: Who the hell is Mitsuba? Well, she's Jobin's wife and Tsurugi's mother. She appeared very briefly in the scene where Josuke met the Higashikata family for the first time, but she hasn't said or done anything since... until now. That's right, Mitsuba Higashikata finally makes her move in the Great Game, and... oh, she's just going to the doctor.

Okay, so I think it's pretty clear that her physician, Dr. Wu Tomoki, is a bad guy. His ridiculous hair, his two ID badges that say DoC ToR on them in obnoxiously huge letters. He looks like a standard JoJo villain with an outlandish fashion sense, but he had to rein it in because of the hospital's rigid dress code.

Mitsuba's purpose in this story seems to be to illustrate just how the Rock Humans can use the Locacaca to exploit carbon-based humans. Damo's smuggler ring was just selling the fruit to wealthy buyers, but Ryo Shimosato spoke of grander plans than this. He and Poor Tom are dead, but their colleague, Dr. Wu, shows us some of what they had in mind. Mitsuba's been receiving Locacaca treatments for a while now. First she had her breasts cosmetically enhanced, but her teeth turned to rocks and she started drooling all the time. That's why she never said anything or showed her face in her previous appearances. Later, she had her teeth restored to normal, but now her right ear is "like a rock", and she can't hear out of it. So she's come right back to Dr. Wu for treatment, never suspecting that she's been getting the same treatment over and over, with different results. And she's been paying handsomely each time.

Dr. Wu agrees to treat her yet again, for 200 million yen. That comes out to 1.2 million US dollars, just to give you an idea. See, that's the kind of grift that the Four Doctors can pull. Damo's smuggler group was a one-and-done thing. His customers were probably told up front that this would heal one body part in exchange for another. That's why the major league pitcher didn't care about losing his jaw as long as his shoulder recovered. But he never would have gone back for a second purchase, for fear of losing his pitching arm.

But Dr. Wu can string his patients along indefinitely. He just never tells them what the treatment is or how it works, or that it causes a new ailment in an unrelated part of the body. And they keep coming back to him because he did such a good job on them the last time. And this all works because everyone trusts him as a doctor to be concerned for their welfare.

Anyway, as it turns out, Yasuho is here at the hospital too, because of menstrual pains. I guess that's just a coincidence, although you can't rule out Paisley Park unconsciously directing her towards the plot. There was an old rule from Part 3 or 4 about how Stand Users are fated to come into contact with other Stand Users, but Yasuho's specific Stand Ability only seems to intensify that principle. So she's there to notice Jobin's wife being rolled through the halls in a wheelchair, and her legs and feet appear to have been turned to stone.

About this time, Josuke calls Yasuho asking her to help him track down the ambulance. Yasuho tells him about Mitsuba, and he warns her that the enemy is probably in the hospital, so she should probably clear out of there until he can link up with her. But Yasuho's curiosity gets the better of her, and she does have those menstrual pains to deal with, so I guess she's not in a big hurry to leave. She tracks down security cam footage of the ambulance and gets a look at the guy who stepped out to pick up the branch. And she quickly recognizes him as the doctor who was pushing Mitsuba's wheelchair.

Yasuho follows them into the examination room, but only finds Mistuba, alone, with no sign of Dr. Wu or the wheelchair. Also, Mitsuba's legs are fine now. Less fine is Mitsuba's state of mind, as she seems to have some sort of memory problems. It's like she doesn't remember why she came here, or that she was even in a wheelchair a minute ago.

Yasuho finally locates the wheelchair in a desk drawer. See, this is one of those bullshit JoJo visuals where something weird happened but there's no plausible explanation for it. A Stand User could dismantle a wheelchair in a few seconds and hide all the pieces in a desk drawer. But once we see the specific Stands we're dealing with, it doesn't make much sense at all. As for Dr. Wu, he's apparently hiding inside Mitsuba's body, which is why she's acting so weird and doing all his strange habits, like chugging an entire 2-liter bottle of water and eating what looks like a phonographic record.

Yasuho quickly recognizes this Stand power as similar to the one the hair clip used against her when she was a child. I'm not sure how accurate the comparison is, since we know so little about the hair clip and its powers. Just to cut to the chase, Dr. Wu's Stand, named... uh... "Doctor Wu"... allows him to turn his body into tiny fragments of himself. It's kind of like Stone Free but with dust instead of string.

That's how he got inside Mitsuba's body, although it's unclear whether this is why she's acting so strangely. Is he controlling her like a puppet, or is this some sort of weird side-effect of his mere presence inside her body. His Stand profile image said that he could interact with the brains of the people he inhabits to make them do certain things, but I don't know what the extent of that is.

The main problem with this arc is that it's Yasuho and Mitsuba teaming up, but Yasuho keeps asking Mitsuba what's going on, and Mitsuba either doesn't know or won't answer. To her credit, Yasuho knows enough about the Locacaca and Dr. Wu to make an educated guess, but Mitsuba seems oblivious to everything.

Actually, maybe that's by design. I never understood what happened to Mitsuba's legs in this story. The Locacaca exchange is unpredictable, but this means Wu had to give her two doses in one visit. Maybe more than two, but for some reason he decided to move her to a different room while waiting for her legs to get back to normal.

But it occurs to me that this might be standard procedure for Wu. He has to keep the Locacaca treatment a secret from his patients in order to keep stringing them along, and he can't send her home with no legs. That would be too conspicuous. So he probably has to run through multiple doses of Locacaca until he settles on an equivalent exchange that works for him. But that would arouse the patients' suspicions, so he uses his Stand power to inhabit their bodies during the process. This allows him to suppress their memories of the treatment. Yasuho just happened to walk in on the final stage of the process.

Now, while Yasuho tries to make sense of all of this, some Dr. Wu fragments get inside her body and attack her. I'm not quite sure how they attack her, but she knows she has to remove them before they can kill her. So she summons Paisley Park, who somehow interfaces with the MRI equipment and locates the foreign material in Yasuho's head.

I'm not entirely sure how any of this works, but the X-Ray view of Yasuho's skull through Paisley Park's hand is one of my favorite visuals in this Part. Also cool is the way PP smashes open a storage cabinet of syringes and pulls off the needle sheath with her mouth. Normally Paisley Park doesn't seem to have a mouth, but she's got one here and it's this cute li'l line on her face. Paisley Park rules.

Then she just stabs the needle into Yasuho's eye (!) and fishes out the offending object. That... seems like it would hurt like hell. Also, this fragment looks like it's made of rock, so I don't see how you could spear it with a metal needle. But it's out, so I guess it doesn't matter anymore.

At last, Dr. Wu reveals himself more properly, and he offers to spare Yasuho but insists on finishing his business with Mitsuba.

His plan is to inhabit Mitsuba's body like he was doing before, then use her to infiltrate the Higashikata property. There, he can find out more about her son Tsurugi, and find out what he knows about the Locacaca branch that Poor Tom tried to steal.

Fortunately, the girls manage to escape Dr. Wu with Mitsuba's own Stand, Awaking III Leaves. She can place arrows and direct force in that direction. They take shelter in an elevator car and Mitsuba uses her power to purge the Dr. Wu fragments out of her body.

Unfortunately, this also includes the petrified fetus in her body. Mitsuba recently learned she was pregnant, and it sure seems like the last round of Locacaca treatment restored her entire body, but at the cost of her unborn child.

Then Wu catches up to them. The thing is, his ability allows him to blow in through any ventilation in any room, so I'm not sure it's possible to just go some place else. He repeats his intentions to use Mitsuba's body, but he also insists that he's the good guy in all of this, because the Locacaca's secrets are for the public good. Therefore, any action he takes to study them is justified, and anyone who opposes his agenda must be evil. As for the fetus, he considers this inconsequential, because it was only in the 14th week of gestation.

Mitsuba repels him again with her Stand, and then they start taping down his body with medical tape. At first I couldn't understand what good this was supposed to do, but then it became clear that the fragments stuck to the tape couldn't get loose, and they wadded them all up into a ball to trap his head.

I think that's Dr. Wu's main weakness. He can do a lot of damage to a person's body as a cloud of dust, but he doesn't have much physical strength in this form. He can't whip himself up into a sandstorm, for example. So if you can get enough adhesive on him, you could...

... Throw him out the window, for one thing. This doesn't actually work, as we'll see, but it does keep him occupied for a bit.

As they leave the elevator, Yasuho runs into an old acquaintance, Toru. They used to date in high school, and now he works part time at the hospital. Looks like he just moves laundry around or something. Yasuho asks him to find Josuke in the lobby and tell him to find her on the third floor. He agrees, but makes some crack about how wet she got when they had sex or something. Yasuho's like "What the fuck, man?" Seriously, it's like Josuke is the only man in this town with any chill at all. And he's a weirdo who sleeps under mattresses, so what does that tell you?

The girls discover the secret room where the Locacaca plants are being kept, and there's some sort of instructional video Dr. Wu made to explain how they should be used for treatment. The main point of the video is that there's no way to predict which part of the body the fruit will attack as part of the equivalent exchange. It always heals an afflicted body part, so that seems reasonably easy to control. For example, with cosmetic surgery applications, like Mitsuba's boob job, they just have to make some incisions or some other damage to the area they want to work on, and that's enough to direct the Locacaca effect to that part of the body, as long as nothing else is wrong.

The problem is that there's always a strong chance that the Locacaca will attack the brain. I mean, there's other vital organs, but maybe those are spared because you literally end up worse off without them, so the exchange wouldn't be equivalent. With the brain you can lose certain chunks and still be alive, I guess. Anyway, that risk would make the Locacaca too dangerous to use, but Dr. Wu promises he has a technique to keep the drug away from the brain during the process. That technique, however, is just his own Stand, which only he can use.

So there's Locacaca fruits here, and it's up to Mitsuba to decide if she wants to use one to try to restore her unborn baby. Oh, if you're wondering how she got it back inside her, her Stand can do that. The point is that without Dr. Wu to assist, there's no guarentee of how her body will be affected by this next dose. But Mitsuba chooses to take her chances. Unfortunately, Dr. Wu is here to "assist", because he managed to get back in the hospital through the water supply, and onto the Locacaca fruit through the irrigation system in this lab. So Mitsuba gets possessed again, and Yasuho is stuck fighting both of their Stands now.

Also of note, Wu's research shows that the Locacaca doesn't work on diseases caused by pathogens like viruses and bacteria. There's some samples of infectious diseases in the lab, and Wu tries to shove Yasuho into them to make her sick, but he also tells her that it was Holly Kira who made this lab. Wu says she "failed" in her research of the Locacaca, which makes it sound like she must have been working with the Four Doctors, and perhaps her present condition may be the result of some botched experiment with the Locacaca.

But Yasuho manages to use more tape to redirect Mitsuba's arrows, which turns the tables on Dr. Wu. She expels Wu from Mitsuba's body, but then Wu does... something to the Locacaca fruits, like he's trying to spray them with the juice or something and... do what exactly? Yasuho's healthy, so would the Locacaca even have any effect on her?

But before things can get too bad, Josuke steps into the room and captures all of Wu's fragments with soap bubbles. Yasuho breathlessly warns Josuke about Wu's powers, but Josuke's already dealt with it.

That's because Josuke had medicinal cement in his bubbles when he fired them. Basically, it's the same idea as the medical tape Yasuho used in the elevator, except this time Wu is soaking in it, and the stuff hardens so he can't escape. I'm pretty sure that suffocates the bastard to death, but the point is that he's been defeated for good.

My only question is: How did Josuke know to do this? Yasuho's phone had been destroyed earlier in this arc, so she couldn't contact Josuke and tell him about Wu's Stand. Toru passed along Yasuho's message, and maybe the mess in the elevator might have given them a clue, but that's about it. Maybe Paisley Park contacted him without Yasuho knowing.

As for Mitsuba, her unborn child is restored, and it looks like the Locacaca took in exchange... her nose, which is a small price to pay considering what else it might have done to her. And this is probably suitable for her character arc, since her troubles started when she came in for a boob job, and then she worried about her mouth, and then she came back today because she was worried her son might notice her bad ear and start asking questions. Mitsuba's been obsessed with her good looks, and now she's stuck with this stone nose because another dose of Locacaca might be dangerous to herself or the baby. But she seems to be at peace with it, so she's learned her lesson.

Overall, this is one of those arcs where I had trouble keeping up with the action. I still enjoy it because it features Yasuho, and the chase through the hospital is fun, but I think I'll enjoy it a lot more when the anime version gets made. Well, assuming an anime version does get made. Hopefully, that anime version won't have all these unseemly upskirt shots of Yasuho. I don't know what got into Araki during this one, but it's like he wanted to draw Yasuho's underwear and this was the arc where he got it out of his system. It's not great.

While the story of Jak X wasn't too interesting, and The Lost Frontier was just a bad game, one thing I did appreciate about them was Keira having a bigger role.

Something that's bothered me about the characters from Jak 2 onwards, is that their relationship with Jak felt very... impersonal, very professional. He was just a member of the underground, going on missions that Torn needed done. The only one who really made a connection with him was Sig, and Damos before he died.

Jak 1 felt different because the characters who spent the game talking to you were actually your friends, they were actually invested in Jak's success, not just what they could get from him. This is also helped by the fact that the initial conflict is just to help Daxter, making it more selfless.

Idk, I just feel like I can connect to a main character more when they have a meaningful connection with those around them.

3. Depends on the kind of game. I'm really good at horror and fighting games in general. I suck at sports and shooters though.

31. I'm quite a fast reader. Also, Jobin, do you know where I can find the House of Leaves? I really wanna read it!

33. Time isn't a concept I experience like humans. My species can live up to 240 years old, so time doesn't really matter to us.

34. I'm an architect, obviously I'm extremely organized.

35. The twins put vodka in my cherry coke once. That didn't make me drunk.

36. I don't want to learn. Bikes are for humans.

37. We made a short animated movie in college and I did the voice acting.

38. No, don't put me on a boat, if I fall in the water, I'll drown.

39. Maths? What is that cursed thing? (please, don't mention that stuff around me... I understand mod when it says how much it's traumatized by that subject)

Me, Myself and I

Entry 1

Hey, hi it's me Eirene, and I enjoy exploring my own world. I enjoy long solo rides (sort of "me time"). I also enjoy taking pictures of the sunset, flowers, scenery, and so on. Yes, I enjoy nature.

My home town has the biggest part of who I am right now. It is my comfort place; it's where I make core memories with my loved ones. When I was in elementary school, I was very excited about my new things (bag, notebook, paper, pencil, crayons, etc.). Fun times on the playground, playing games like hide and seek, the monkey bar (lol), and many more. I learned how to write in cursive (achievement koat dati haha) and master multiplication tables (yana, ayaw ko nalang mag talk). And the friendship bracelet with my best friend. And when high school came (NNHS), I met new friends, new teachers, and a new chapter of myself. And things fluttered my mind when I transferred to school at ESNCHS, adjusting to a new routine (waking up at 4:30 am para dire ma late). The environment was very new; I got culture shock (🤏han first week) And then, thank God, I met a new circle of friends/study buddies. We got to cram (an hour before the deadline), study,study,study (LOL), and hang out with them in lunch after class (ha baybay,chillspot, Mcdo,savemore damo pa). Yes, I'm out of my comfort zone now and gaining confidence. Lastly, we graduated with the excitement of complete cap and gown, ceremonies, diploma presentations, and a blessing that I got the academic achievement I've been praying for. Yeah that's my happy, full-fledged, hard, and chaotic academic life from elementary to senior high school.

Lastly here I am still unsure about starting a new chapter of my life, which can be both fascinating and exhausting. It's like starting a book with a blank page and not knowing what is going to happen after.

Posted on Youtube, was done in English, yet I am somewhat skeptical that people will take the 3 minutes and 39 seconds to watch it before judging her, so I am transcribing it instead.

I'm like 99 percent sure Timothee did the interview but a person's voice pitch changes when they're not speaking in their native language so I don't want to be wrong and incorrectly assign who did the interview.

LAURA BENKARTH OL INTERVIEW

Journalist: So Laura, we're really happy to welcome you here in Lyon. Can you first of all just introduce yourself for the people who don't know you yet?

Benkarth: Yeah. I'm Laura Benkarth, I'm a goalkeeper. I'm also really happy to be here at Lyon because I think it's one of the best clubs in the world. I'm really looking forward to the new season and the new challenge.

Journalist: Why did you choose to come here? Can you tell us a bit about the contacts, the exchanges, why you made the choice to come here?

Benkarth: Yeah, like I said, Lyon is one of the biggest clubs in Europe, even in the world, and they won a lot of titles. And I think it's a great challenge to be here, to train everyday at the highest level. I had good talks also with the coach, and so I chose Lyon.

Journalist: What image did you have of the club from the outside, what did you think about Lyon before coming here?

Benkarth: I think that Lyon's a really professional club, where you can do your job at the highest level in really good conditions. And yeah, I was really happy when I heard that Lyon wanted to have me, and so. Yeah.

Journalist: Were you able to ask for some advice from Saki Kumagai or Emelyne Laurent at Bayern? We have a few players there. Did they tell you about Lyon? What was your relationship with Saki and Emelyne?

Benkarth: With Saki, I was her roommate so of course I talked to her and asked her about Lyon. She only tells positive things. I also talked to Sara Dabritz, because I played with her at Bayern and Freibourg, and also on the German National Team. They also only said positive things about the club, the club is very professional, the team is really cool, that they have a lot of fun together. And of course they are really good and win a lot of titles.

Journalist: Obviously the goalkeeper role is quite special. Right now, as we speak, we have Christiane Endler who has spent the entire season as the No. 1. What do you think about her, first of all, as a goalkeeper? Are you excited to get to meet her, train with her, things like that?

Benkarth: Yes, of course. She's a great goalkeeper and I'm happy to train with her because I think we can learn from each other, and can bring us to the next level maybe through the competition. I'm really happy to train with her.

Journalist: The coach, when I talked to her just before, said that competition was important and that it's important to have people who are motived. Of course it has to be a fair competition as well. Are you ready to have this healthy competition and, like, pushing up with Christiane [Endler]?

Benkarth: Yes. I'm absolutely ready for that. It was also [the case] when I was at Bayern, where you always have competition with other players, because you're a top team and you have top players. So competition is always there, and I like it because I think it pushes me to the next level. But like you said it always has to be in a good way, because you're still a team and you still have to stand up for each other on the pitch and off the pitch, and yeah, help each other to grow.

Journalist: What would you say are your strengths in the game, what type of goalkeeper are you in a way?

Benkarth: I'm a goalkeeper who communicates a lot on the field, so I'm really interested how it works in French. But like I said, I will learn it, the language. And I think I'm also really good with the ball at my feet, I think the players are always safe when they play the ball back to me. I'm comfortable with it and that's a lot of fun for me to build the game up from behind. And I think that's one of my biggest strengths.

Connecting the dots backwards takes a wicked mindset. Today, my OG marketing dad and I had a catch up in the South. I thought ugod-ugod mode na siya and mahina na panunaw pero hiyang-hiya ako. At 70+ years old, tuwid na tuwid maglakad. Since it rained cats and dogs, nausog ng slight meet up namin. Nahiya na naman ako kasi sobrang aga niya and he messaged that he is outside Amici. LOL. He does not know where Southbank is and olats daw Westgate kasi umuulan. Apaka arte. I missed Amici kaya G lang. I forgot to bring a book so I tried a quick trip sa bookstore kaso, nakita ko nakatayo siya sa second floor. My OG marketing dad is soooooo underrated and has an almost non-existent digital footprint. As a blue eagle x dragon (hahahaha), may ego talaga pero since anak-anakan niya akong tunay, wala na. Finished na. We bonded over black coffee, wine and pizza for almost 5 hours. He remembered our supposed meet up before pandemic. Sabi ko, nag-spiral ako and getting back on track. I thought the lost years meant we have to warm up pa, pero no. Parang kahapon lang. Bungad niya sa akin is: So, ano ng last name mo? Me: Shet. Sir, bakit naman ganyan ang tanong mo? He laughed and said na nagtatanong lang siya because I am of age na, matagal na. I said na road to house plant era na ako. He shrugged and told me bahala ako sa buhay ko. After the pangaasar, he told me that I’d match well with _____. Let’s leave that blank because TMI. We talked about soooooo many stuff and he said na our meet up seems like destiny as anak-ama. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Huy. Tawang-tawa ako sa pagiging cheesy neto. He never fails. Iba talaga siya. As in. Even when he told me that he needs more time to brush up on the marketing game, terror daw siya sa mga panels ng thesis na inuupuan niya. Bwiset. ‘Wag daw siyang dadaanin sa unsound research design saka sa mga ... Sabi ko naman baka tawanan lang niya ako just in case mag-panel siya sa akin. Tumawa na naman. We aligned about how Kotler and Godin and Patel are coming together. And how he enjoys his 2 TB music files sa set up ng audio na pangmalakasan like 13th month x 3 ++++. Takte. Siya na. Sabi ko may Spotify naman pero syempre, ‘di tumigil. Sabi niya is from the flappers to the golden era, meron sa playlist niya. HAHAHAHHAAHAHAHHA. Sendan ko nga links para matigalgalan ‘to. Sabi niya pa tigil ko raw dream ko mag-pick up kasi hassle and that I may want to consider getting a ___. :D Daming alam. Pero gets kasi ‘pag nakapag-drive na ako ulit, humanda ang mga roadtrip na gustong-gusto ko. He recently got a Prado and will test drive sa major roadtrip niya soon. What I love about huddles with my OG marketing tatay is that he never fails to amaze me. And that, dati wala akong ambag sa mga Pinas tours kasi gala siya for his work and his gala self. Ngayon, nagco-compare notes na kami. Syempre, 2 na lang daw ‘di niya natawid na lugar sa Pinas. Batanes and Jolo. E ‘di siya na. Pati Siargao, may secret spot siya. Shemayyyyy. And agree siya sa Negros na pakakkkkk sa ganaps and opportunities. Agree din siya na Siquijor is underrated. And that if may lockdown, gusto daw niya malockdown sa Kalinga dulo. LOL. May nalalaman pang pagbubunot ng damo as souvenir sa Kalinga. HAHAHAHAHAHAH. Hipster talaga ‘tong OG marketing dad ko. He’s not judging but he is upfront. Siguro, this time around, I saw him in his more relaxed state. Dati kasi gigil. Daming bashing. Sabi niya, pandemic taught him to be the kinder version of himself. OPAK. Tabi. He shared na dapat ang goal na these days is makatulog ng mahimbing sa gabi and continue to help people along the way even when it discomforts you. LOLLOLLL. Luh. Gospel mode na ba siyaaaa? Challenged him to try free dive. Ayaw daw niya; pero he is on his way to scubadiving as a shala being. LOL. He also shared a deep dive of his career ganaps which is soooo timely. :D Hahahaha. Para akong pinapakalma at pinapausukan at the same time. ‘Wag daw ako masyadong masungit. HAHAHAHHAHAHAHA. Sabi ko I am trying. He told me that my aura is radiating. And sabi ko, seems like siya rin. I guess nga, this afternoon’s huddle is meant to be. I feel like I’m with cup half-empty and half-full. As a mentor, he is honest but he makes sure that I am in a safe space. ‘Yung pake niya ‘di nauubos. Sana all. :D We also talked about my PTSD x mother dragon and topline shizummzz about my lola who passed away recently. He shared his life’s bits and pieces din and siguro, no TMI pero he shared na we just have to let things happen and connect the dots backwards. Pati sa law school ganaps ko, aba, may kuda. Apparently, he took law for a year lang pala. LOL. Sabi ko pagusapan na lang namin next time kasi daming hanash neto. HAHAHAHAHAHA. Perhaps what I like most about my OG marketing dad is his willingness and ability to share his mistakes straight up. Walang chaser. ‘Di on the rocks. Minsan hassle i-down sa system ko pero he makes me think better. He never fails to back up his stories with life lessons. HUHUHUHUHU. And that he is never settling for fancy titles kasi sabi niya nga, titles are but social constructs. EME. Of course, ‘di ko na naman napigilan to ask anong honest opinion niya sa brand I am working under for the past years. Kinabahan ako kasi he paused. Sabi niya is from an outside perspective, maganda. Happy daw siya nasa fintech x digital ako. LUH. Buti wala siyang angal though ready naman ako. Need ko ng assessment sa kanya bilang ‘di rin biro na ang tagal ko na dito. By tagal meaning, I easily get bored kaya sobrang character arc development ‘yung chapter ko na ‘to. Andami pang need ayusin, matutunan at i-unlearn. He used to bike daw but he is now into walking. But wait, there’s more. Before pandemic, nakikipagsabayan pa raw siya sa full court ng basketball. :D Pota siya. Gulat daw faculty sa kanya. Sabi ko naman ano ba toka niya since saks lang height niya. Point guard daw. LELS. Ego all over po, opo. Tanong ko, talaga ba? Sabi niya, noon daw, considered na siyang matangkad and ngayon lang naman daw sa generation namin mga tall na tall players. LUH. Daming yabang pero okay, at his age, this is monumental. Parang ‘yung lipat ko from sales to fashion to digital to fintech. Here and now na talaga kasi at my age, saktong-sakto lang talaga ang bagong pivot. Dasal lang talaga. Hey friend! I’m finally getting around to watching all of the mobile games, and I know you’ve posted about the best way to watch the cutscenes before…would you mind giving me a refresher? Is it best to watch in chronological order, or the order they were released in??

I'd say it depends on if you're casual or picky, and each option has pros and cons. Each option suggested is about 6 hours.

There is Damo's edited chronological order for casual viewers, including UX and Back Cover. But I'm anal-retentive about detail, and edited videos may miss a cutscene or arrange them in an incorrect manner. I just prefer to rely on the original material than fan edited ones.

If you haven't yet, I'd say watch Back Cover before UX.

Everglow's video on UX has the original order of cutscenes, with text explanations. However, I find those redundant as they talk about meta history not relevant anymore, and explain things meant to be revelations later in the story LMAO. But, some people prefer the explanations because it helps them understand. I'll leave it to you to decide. If you're good at understanding DDD and other complex KH areas, you might not need them.

Finally there's my youtube playlist from KHInsider. The difference between mine and Everglow's is that I include a few small cutscenes of Player with friends and of Wreck it Ralph. The cutscenes are straight from the app though, no explanations or reorder to help you understand.

You can even watch via the free app itself-- where make your own character, and take your time with dialogue without pausing a video every other line. However it can be a LOT to navigate the cutscenes for new comers. I suggest my youtube playlist for order reference, but the only ones you won't find is "Awakening" and "Dark Footsteps" because they were never put on mobile...

A FEW OPTIONS, hope that helps!!

edit: as for Dark Road, you can watch part of it on youtube since it's not accessible via the app right now, but I don't even really see the point in starting that game until it's completely out in August or September hopefully.

I DIDN’T PLAY BUT I WAS WATCHING DAMO’S LIVESTREAM THE MOMENT THE UPDATE DROPPED </3 honestly the reason I’ve gone inactive is because I’ve done nothing but work on wayfinder charm designs for the scala squad and the upperclassmen, you don’t uNDERSTAND IM OBSESSED

but but but, here’s some thoughts under the cut ! as usual, warning for spoilers ahead and lots and lots of text bc I’m a blabbermouth

ok so, I’ll start in order so it’s easier for me to keep track of

the disney worlds being more relevant AND helpful to the story

I’ve seen so many people say this and they’re so fuckin right, cause disney worlds used to be just fun places where SOMETIMES things related to the plot might happen. at best, a certain disney sidekick and their movie helped develop the main gang/plot but no one really thinks “hey KH2 atlantica really helped Sora grow as a person and was super important to the overaching plot huh”. like, sure, not EVERYTHING has to be plot heavy or super relevant, especially in a game aimed for kids but christ I literally erased all of KH2′s lion king from my brain bc the only thing worth remembering there is “look sora is a cute lion!”

it just feels nice because in other games, all these bad guys WERE meant to be THE hottest shit in the world, the scariest mfs you would ever face, but they essentially had nothing other than a fun boss battle and boom bye. nomura kinda spent a few games kicking maleficent’s dead body trying to make her relevant again.

so seeing the Scala squad actually make use of the magic mirror’s abilities MORE THAN ONCE was actually fucking revolutionary for me like, yeah of COURSE you would go back to THE magic mirror that so far has been doing nothing but answer any question you’ve given him. of course it’s cool when MALEFICENT KILLS BALDR’S SISTER because she hasn’t been directly relevant in anything since. what. KH1 or KH2. I liked that Hades, as the GOD OF THE DEAD, actually has the power to BRING PEOPLE BACK IF HE WANTED, if only for a bit LIKE. WOW!!! THEY *ARE* IMPORTANT AND POWERFUL PEOPLE

characters being more than just good vs bad guys. the morality and mentality of light vs darkness being more nuanced.

the main issue a lot of ppl had with Xehanort and Eraqus is that they were rlly painted as strictly bad vs good, but only Eraqus was allowed ??? some semblance of respect in the games ??? even if he fucked up A LOT. because he was, in the end “a good guy”. and Xehanort was just this villain bordering on cartoony with the funny wiggly fingers no one fucking understood but that you were meant to forgive in KH3 despite everything he did, which felt very undeserved

BUT HERE IN DARK ROAD you get to see more of everyone and their clashing ideologies and morals, which is even sadder in retrospect when you see that they’re extremely close and genuinely cared about each other and their world. Xehanort wants change, Eraqus wants to remain the same, Vor is conflicted because she’s right in the middle, the upperclassmen are willing to do horrible things for the greater good, baldr is. well. going thru it 24/7, etc.

Eraqus being so fucking stubborn and determined to eradicate darkness because to him, darkness is inherently evil, MEETING SOMEONE who thinks the same AND is willing to go a STEP FURTHER to help was SO good to me, like Vidar really showed up and did that

just like Xehanort, someone who knows change is part of life and believes darkness could be controlled if you’re strong enough, who has been an outsider everywhere he’s been, MEETING BALDR, WHO IS AN EXTREME VERSION OF HIM GONE WRONG TOO. its good, its very good, i like it

THEY ALSO TALK ABT THE THING I’VE BEEN WAITING SO MANY YEARS TO BE BROUGHT UP ??? ABOUT HOW DARKNESS AND LIGHT ARE EXTREMELY OBJECTIVE CONCEPTS AND UNIQUE TO EACH PERSON - the constant discussions between Eraqus and Xehanort about where darkness comes from exactly, if it’s inherent to a person’s heart or if it’s an outside force corrupting them and so on are genuinely very interesting to me. because there ARE people who are genuinely corrupted and shitty, but there’s also people who go through horrible shit and are consumed by their trauma and negative feelings. you’re not just “a bad person” just because you suddenly have darkness inside you. you’re not just a “good person” just because you side with light either. everyone is fucked bc they all have to make do with the things they know and what they think is right while darkness is out to get their asses

its not that simple, but with a single push anyone can go joker mode basically, it’s just fucking stupid to think anyone can be pure absolute light. DDD even touches this when it comes to Sora being perfect too, but he’s just as liable to falling into darkness if pushed enough, HELL, ANTI SORA IS A REMINDER OF THAT

sure, KH3 did drop some vague shit about Elsa being at the verge of falling to darkness BECAUSE she believed her powers were harmful and thus they became part of the darkness. sure, KH3 also had Aqua falling to darkness after all this time, but you don’t see why or how, she’s just THERE for shock effect and eh. ehhh.

alternatively, the lack of upperclassment content makes me sad........... I wanted to see them banter and see a bit more of their personalities individually

I love their designs, man......I wanted to see more of them...... just look at them... look at this fella...hes just layin down, sleepin, chillin

look at them... Vala took off her glasses to sleep, you barely even get to fuckin see these two bc Vidar’s dialogue box gets in the way but they rlly did that little detail...

Also the ninja, Vali, not talking and being sneaky bc he’s a ninja and his only dialogue happening during the fight against Baldr.... I JUST - LOOK AT HIM HES SO COOL AUGHHHH

like all fucking upperclassmen are so cool and strong like the part where Baldr summons a bunch of heartless before going to the tower and they’re all surrouned bUT THE UPPERCLASSMEN KILL EVERYTHING IN A FUCKING SECOND ?????

LIKE WHY DID YALL DIE TO THE ALBINO TWINK LIKE?? BRO

Vidar and Hoder are also really interesting characters from the scenes they’ve had. I think about the moment at the tower during the final confrontation against Baldr, when Hoder shows up to talk to him and because they’re so close, they know exactly what’s happening and block each other’s attacks. And when they reach out and they have the same expression. AND WHEN ODIN ASKS XEHANORT TO RID BALDR OF DARKNESS, HODER DOES IT BC SHE KNOWS XEHANORT IS HESITATING BUT SHE DOESNT BC THATS HER BROTHER. SHE KNOWS ITS BETTER LIKE THIS

also also, all the little details, tie-ins and foreshadowing too

I like how they explain that death is not commonly called, well. “Death”. because these people don’t die normally, they replace the word “die” with “disappear” because that’s literally what happens to people who die. BUT that also makes me really curious about the graves? What’s exactly the point of tombstones and shit if there’s nobody buried there, like it’s probably just so you can see HOW many people died and feel the weight of Scala ad Caelum’s story but idk, I would’ve liked some unique way of commemorating the death that fits the way they die.

DDD mentions that all the worlds operate on their unique timeframes and that they’re essentially looping over and over, but the restart happens at random. here in dark road we get to see the worlds BEFORE the restart, hence why Agrabah is empty, and the explanation for the constant swarms of heartless which I thought was a nice touch lol

this mention of the Final World which makes me think about THIS post right here saying that one of the stars in KH3 could be Hoder herself

then we see the conversation between current old man Xehanort and Vanitas about how Vanitas is most likely the remaining Darkness hiding which is A Lot To Think About given the fact that Vanitas has Sora’s face and Sora is hinted to be the next proper Child of Destiny (EVEN THOUGH I STILL THINK IT’S RIKU BUT ANYWAY) like yeah yeah, Vanitas looks like that because Sora and Ventus’ hearts connected very early on but how ironic is that ????

THEN that convo between Xehanort and Eraqus about how many lives they’d want and Xehanort has the balls to say 14 and then days later Nomura drops a fucking drawing of Xehanort in (possibly) Quadratum? yeah. yeah I’m eating that up

oh right, also Eraqus’ entire quirky trait about running away and shit? I thought that would come up eventually as in, he actually ran away and people died because of that choice but I guess not lmfao, that was kinda eh considering how many times it’s brought up in the beginning

ALSO the fact that their keyblades is a more fancy version of the starlight from KHux really got to me like, yeah. YEAH..... This really is Ephemer’s legacy.....

AND the fact that during Vor and Baldr’s scene at the tower, in every flashback you see EVERYONE fading away in light minus Bragi. Plus some of Bragi’s dialogue like his reason to become a keyblade master, it really is good foreshadowing

Again, I really like the scene where you get to see in a fucking row all the days he spent in his room grieving and mourning and spiraling, like. You know that one post that says “producers : you guys cant show anything showing death or blood. writers : ok *makes up a fater worse than death*” yeah............... the absolute irony of being possessed by the entity that orchestrated your own sister’s death AND your own demise is very very good

I like how Eraqus insists that they can STILL save him while Xehanort was ready to fucking kill this guy and that moment of hesitation was all the darkness needed to give ANOTHER fucking speech about shit - a speech that works perfectly because he’s casting so much doubt in Xehanort’s heart by making it all about “it’s us and then there’s THEM” and kind of being like “yeah, the second your emotional support boytoy Eraqus dies, it’s fucking over for your sanity bro, I’ve been there”

and the entire explanation as to how constantly insisting that darkness is inherently bad has led to people like Baldr go absolutely unhinged because they start to believe THEY are bad, despite having done NOTHING to prove that, which relates to Terra’s entire journey and Ansem the Wise’s resentment towards Nobodies and consequent treatment of ppl like Namine, Xion or Roxas who CLEARLY felt things, were developing unique personalities but because they weren’t inherent light, then they weren’t worth the chance

so basically every goddamn old man who has become a teacher in this entire saga of games is a shithead lmfao. Eraqus doesn’t get to see this conversation between Hoder and Baldr, so of course he clings to that belief of Darkness = evil evil evil, especially with the shit Xehanort is going to start pulling right after this but like

I really really really liked the idea of Nomura trolling the fanbase who is very vocal and tired of Xehanort being everywhere by making the player ACTUALLY xehanort. it also made sense, Xehanort’s obsession with finding the people in his dreams, because those people were ACTUALLY his friends in his previous life, him being a superempath who leeches people’s memories and feelings is kinda eh in this specific context because I don’t feel it justifies all the shit he does to find Ephemer, Ventus, etc

but baby nort is very cute and I like that we get to be his grandparent and mentor for awhile, probably being the reason he’s also very interested in the outside worlds due to him being stranded here AND all the stories we most likely told him about everything. and I also like that he was pretty much set up to fail the second we died, doomed characters are very fun

I guess this confirms that Skuld’s descendant is Xehanort’s mother since he does mention his mom looks like “the girl from his dreams” aka Skuld herself. So that would mean Ephemer and Skuld’s bloodlines becoming one too, which is interesting, I cant wait for missing link..........

Showtrial Ending: How the Flashbacks Tell the True Story

In episode four, BBC courtroom thriller Showtrial includes an exchange that handily lays out the drama’s premise for anybody snoozing at the back. On the deck of his luxury lakefront villa – in the Cotswolds just outside Cirencester if you fancy it – billionaire property developer Sir Damian Campbell [James Frain] tells the solicitor defending his daughter Talitha in an impending murder trial, “This is a showtrial. It won’t be decided on the evidence, but on her and on us and [gesturing at the opulent setting] this.” Solicitor Cleo [Tracy Ifeachor] somehow restrains herself from slapping him on the forehead and replying ‘Ya think?’ to say that it’s the jury and not the media, who will ultimately deliver the verdict. The problem with that, says Sir Damo, is that 99 percent of people who meet his daughter absolutely hate her.

With good reason. Talitha Campbell, played by Celine Buckens, does not have an endearing personality. A student at Bristol’s fictional Avonmouth University, in the well-chosen words of one detective she’s “a rude, entitled little cow.” Expelled from an elite girls’ school and rejected from Oxford, Talitha’s smart-mouthed, smirking and obnoxious with an ‘I could buy and sell this place’ attitude. She finds just about everybody risible, thinks they fancy her, and wants them to know that her heirloom bracelet is worth more money than they’ll make in their entire life. She also appears to take nothing seriously, even being arrested on suspicion of the murder of a fellow student.

When Hannah Ellis – a popular state school-educated high-achiever Talitha fell out with and sent threatening texts to – is found strangled to death and dumped in a river, suspicion falls on ‘Lady Tease’ (the name Talitha uses for her webcam and escort work). It’s nothing to do with her, says Talitha. But then the murder weapon is found to be the green scarf she wore on the night Hannah disappeared. And then best friend Dhillon [Joseph Payne] says that Talitha did it during a sex game gone wrong and they disposed of the body together. Dhillon’s very sorry but it was all her fault.

Who to believe? Flippant, grating Talitha or contrite, traumatised Dhillon?

The Jury’s Verdict

In the finale, Showtrial’s jury delivers a verdict. Instead of hating Talitha as her father predicted, they actually quite enjoyed her quick wit and humour on the witness stand. And when she reluctantly revealed her history of childhood sexual abuse by her mother and her mother’s cronies, they also felt for her. Dhillon on the other hand, lost sympathy by erupting angrily under questioning. He was also shown to have a history of harassment and sexual assault against women, and Hannah was threatening to bring a stalking complaint against him to the police. The DNA evidence against Dhillon conclusively placed him at the scene of the murder (unlike that against Talitha), showed that he’d had sex with Hannah before (or possibly after) she was killed, and he was discovered by police burning items of clothing including the murder-weapon scarf. The same police were also found to have withheld evidence that could cast doubt on Talitha’s guilt, which suggested an unfair, possibly class-based bias against her.

All of which added up to the jury’s verdict: guilty for Dhillon, not guilty for Talitha. Vindication! Until, in Showtrial’s very last scene, Talitha goes to visit her solicitor before leaving for Paris. “We did it,” she tells her, “we so totally fooled them.” Then she laughs, winks and says “Your face! Gotcha.” It’s another tasteless joke in a long line, but one that plants a seed of doubt in the mind of both Cleo and the viewer. Has Talitha had us all on? Could Dhillon actually have been telling the truth?

In a word: no. However much ‘or is she?’ chin-stroking energy writer Ben Richards spoons into Showtrial‘s final scene to get people talking, the drama builds a much more convincing case for Talitha’s innocence and Dhillon’s guilt than for the reverse. Mostly through its characterisation of both and the drip-feed of information that emerges over the five episodes to support it, but also through the use of flashback.

Dhillon’s Unreliable Flashbacks

The audience is never shown the act of Hannah’s murder, only elliptical flashbacks to the night of the student ball after which she was killed. Director Zara Hayes and her editors show the same scenes of the ball multiple times, framed either as Talitha’s or Dhillon’s memories, or as third party video or CCTV footage: there’s Hannah serving drinks, Talitha and Dhillon dancing, both of them on the Ferris wheel, and Dhillon filming Hannah from a distance without her knowledge… all featuring Talitha wearing her incriminating green scarf.

One video – that DI Cassidy attempted to bury – shows the scarf wrapped around Dhillon’s neck, but doesn’t show him return it to Talitha. He may have done off camera, of course, which was DI Cassidy’s point in withholding the footage – why give Talitha’s defence the chance to cast doubt on her having been in possession of the murder weapon all night when the nasty cow almost certainly did it? That’s the trouble with prejudice interfering with process, says Showtrial. A jury has to convict on evidence, not instinct.

In Showtrial, the viewer is the jury, and the flashbacks are part of our evidence. In those flashbacks, we repeatedly see Talitha and Dhillon’s walk home from the ball, both from their memories and in CCTV footage. In all of the walking home scenes, Talitha is wearing Dhillon’s velvet jacket over her dress, and no visible scarf around her neck. However, when Dhillon gives his second police interview, in which he spins the story of the boatyard drinking, the “peace mission” to Hannah’s, and the subsequent deadly threesome, Talitha is shown wearing the scarf tightly knotted around her neck.

Why is Talitha only seen wearing the scarf (which would have been visible even under the jacket) post-ball in this one version of events? Because those scenes – the boatyard, Hannah ruefully forgiving the pair and inviting them inside – are pure inventions by Dhillon. They’re the story he spins to the police, not real memories. We can say this because at the start of episode two, we see a sequence in which Talitha (no scarf) and Dhillon walk across the bridge, spliced with Cassidy and Thornley following the same route in daylight. That sequence isn’t framed as either Talitha or Dhillon’s memory, it’s presented as an objective event. And in the objective not-filtered-through-anybody’s-drug-and-drink-fuelled-memory version, the scarf isn’t around Talitha’s neck.

Dhillon Harwood: Guilty

If you’re thinking that Talitha – who says she must have lost the scarf at the ball – could easily have put it back on, and therefore need more to convince you that Dhillon was the sole killer, there’s plenty. Unlike Talitha, he’s proven to lie repeatedly and acts suspiciously after Hannah is reported missing. He lies about knowing Hannah to his mother, and then watches videos of Hannah he covertly took on his phone. He takes his clothing from the ball and the murder weapon scarf to the New Forest to burn. And unlike Talitha, he appears nervous in his police interviews, in the first of which he tells a pack of lies to the police about having had sex with Hannah prior to her leaving for work that night, before changing his story.

Then there’s Dhillon’s history of stalking and sexually harassing women. Even Talitha said that he was relentless and obsessive if she didn’t message him back immediately. He twice sexually assaulted previous partner Lucinda Bright by initiating sex when she was asleep, and by lying about wearing a condom during sex. He repeatedly filmed Hannah without her knowledge, and was scared that her complaint would see him kicked out of university – no small deal for the son of a shadow cabinet minister. Dhillon’s predatory behaviour was covered up by his well-connected middle class parents, and so went unpunished until this violent escalation.

The real evidence though, is that fantasy ‘flashback’ sequence of Dhillon’s. Having witnessed the fight between Hannah and Talitha at the ball, knowing about the threatening texts and Hannah’s complaint about Dhillon to Dr Vendler, how likely is it that Hannah simply forgave all and invited those two in for a chummy drink? That never happened, because Talitha was the one telling the truth. The real story is that Dhillon left her house after she fell asleep, went to Hannah’s, where he possibly drugged her (Hannah had GHB in her system, though could have taken it recreationally) raped and strangled her before dumping her body in the water. And when he was caught, he tried to shift the blame onto his oldest friend, whose brash and personality he knew would do her no favours in court.
