strawberry shortcake au!
i can't believe i'm actually going to bother you with my recurring hyperfixation, but here we go,folks!
world building:
This Pinescone au is based on the 80s Strawberry Shortcake series. but with some modifications that I made to adapt to the au and the characters and at the same time taking elements from the other reboots
In this version, Strawberryland is a quiet, remote small town where the tiny habitants spend all seasons harvesting their fruits and vegetables. At the pace of the series, there will be no villains, but there will only be simple problems in the town that end well in the end. (like the children's series of those times. Take reference from My Little Pony (the first generations), the Moomins, the Smurfs)
All the habitants are smaller than fruits, each one has their own job or house in a shape of a sweet (like a cake house, etc.). and each inhabitant is characterized by its fruit flavor and aroma. what makes them unique and differentiable
Everyone in Strawberryland has a specific skill in cooking. (For example, Wirt specializes in the sweets served in cafes.)
There are other towns depending on the flavor and taste (a vegetable town, another of flour, another of ice cream) but Strawberryland focuses on fruits.
pinescone headcanons:
They both met like it happens in the 80s series, except that Dipper would get lost trying to find the town and Wirt would offer him a hand. (just look at the damn video and imagine wirt and dipper singing this adorably!. don't tell me this is not a big deal)
youtube
2. Wirt runs a coffee shop in the village and lives there. It is his home and his coffee shop at the same time.
3. (NOT DECIDED YET) Dipper being a strawberry his sister Mabel is a blueberry. Together they are the Berry twins (Help I don't know what fruit to give Mabel I'm between blueberry, cherry, raspberry or like the canonical sister in the 80s series "Apple Dumplings". I need help with this part). Mabel specializes in cooking with excessive sugar dishes and is also the town's fashion designer.
4. Mabel forces Dipper to wear the clothes she creates for Dipper. Dipper is embarrassed and frustrated to walk around the town like that. Wirt finds it adorable and cute, and is always curious to know what cute clothes Dipper will wear.
5.Wirt loves cooking for Dipper, it's one of his favorite things because he loves every tender expression of joy that the little strawberry puts on when trying his new and improved desserts.
6.Wirt has the personality of a spoiled and affectionate mother. She loves her friends very much (especially Dipper) and will show her affection through actions.
7.Dipper is considered Wirt's favorite customer at the cafeteria. He sometimes helps him taste his new or improved desserts.
8.They both give each other affectionate nicknames, Dipper is "little strawberry" and Wirt is "orange pie"
9. Dipper doesn't know how to cook, every single thing he cooks burns. It's considered weird not to know how to cook or specialize in a recipe in Strawberryland. But Dipper doesn't care, his true talent is writing. He writes diaries and books and works for the town newspaper (the poor thing has a lot of writer block)
10.Wirt tries to suppress the desire to kiss and pinch those chubby, pink cheeks that the strawberry has. He is so adorable that sometimes he can't control himself.
11. They both like each other, Wirt knows his feelings perfectly while Dipper still doesn't admit it. They both didn't declare themselves for fear of ruining their friendship.
12.Wirt writes music and poetry in his freetime, he shares it with Dipper after closing at night. All his poems and music are dedicated to Dipper but he doesn't realize it yet.
13.Dipper is very absent-minded and clumsy lol
that's all you can go now pipipipi

I've finished watching season 4 of Moominvalley, and with the comet special being the definitive capstone of the gutsy 2019 adaptation, I can now give a proper and solid opinion on the series as a whole.
I was right all along suck it losers (joke)
Anyway I'm going to give my review of the series now.
As I've often said prior, MV19 revels in the major moments of the moomins, but does nothing to earn them. This leaves a lot of what should feel impactful instead feeling hollow, at least for a long time fan like me. I've also thought since watching the first season of MV19 that British humor clashes inherently with the genuine nature of the moomins, the sarcasm and attitudes present throughout make for a more modern feeling adaptation, but removes a certain luster from the moomins themselves and the other characters in the valley. The jokes are dry and impassionate, and the moomins are anything but.
"Classic," a term you could very easily apply to the moomins as a whole, is a word that means "undiminished by time." In an attempt to modernize the moomins, nothing is gained, and rounding edges and shaving off sides to fit a cleaner shape only works if you have more material to start with. Removing pieces from a classic, polishing them and filing them down does not leave you with a classic, it leaves you with holes and gaps. The time allotted per episode and the amount of episodes in a season didn't leave enough room for this modernization, in fact it didn't leave enough room for the series to breathe, with season 4 being the most damning example of this with its abysmal pacing and, at best, serviceable writing. With odd things here or there like the moomins ostensibly being vegans until season 4, or the appearance of modern appliances like freezers in moominhouse, the worst of it all in my opinion is that these things feel less like creative choices and more like revisions that reek of exterior involvement. The whole "it's a gown, not a dress" thing in season 4 epitomizes this, when in the book it's stated firmly that it is a dress that the hemulen got from his aunt. And what was the deal with the angostura plant? Is knife versus a literal plant too violent? I'm not asking for the moomins to be edgy I'm just tired of pandering to advertiser's fears of anything potentially pointy or objectionable. Change can be good, but what purpose do these and the many other changes serve?
Now, adherence entirely to the limitations of the original moomin books or even the 90s series that many fans hold dear is not a recipe for success and should not be looked to as an aspiration in my opinion. Creativity and innovation breed success, but the recipes for the moomin stories are simple and elegant. In all, I don't think changing them should be considered a sin, but i do think we should be mindful of how we change them and what we change. Dr. Seuss's wife put her foot down on film adaptations of the property following some bad movies, and while I don't think MV19 hits that mark of awful it should serve as a cautionary tale toward working with beloved materials.
I should clarify, it was not bad. It was actually a fairly enjoyable romp through moominvalley's tales, and had enough for both fans and newcomers alike. It wasn't exactly what anyone was expecting, and often felt like it backtracked in terms of character progression. The interior of the series moreso mirrored things like family guy, wherein at the end of the episode, everything within it was capped off and shelved with a complete and simple narrative A plot/B plot to boot. I personally don't find that to be satisfying and I find it ill fitting of the moomins as a whole. I'll also mention as a pet peeve, snork being autistic is cool! But sniff being highly autistic coded and being treated routinely the way he is, and then LITERALLY magically giving him empathy only for it not to ever be relevant again is something I just can't overlook. This adaptation treats sniff SO poorly which is unbecoming of the moomins in my opinion, and the way this adaptation handles things like autistic characters or characters being "weird" and then preaching inclusivity really bothers me. Everyone's welcome! Until they're not. None of these characters seem to meet the values they're known for. There's a subtle casual cruelty in this adaptation that stems from the British humor, and that's generally what I mean about it clashing. Some might praise this as making the moomins more relatable or humanizing them, but I'll tell you point blank that that's not the intention, and that they're not meant to be like you and everyone else, that's kind of the whole point.
While I did say it had enough for fans and newcomers, I will say that in an attempt to capture the way the moomins is not only suitable for and enjoyed by all ages, MV19 does exactly the opposite. The writing and the humor especially seems intent on bridging the gap between all comers, however there's fairly little charm and the jokes seem largely to befit a very young audience, but the show itself does not feel suitably enjoyable or lesson based to suit the purpose of media for that young audience. Characterizations of characters like Moominpappa as a bumbling fool with an ego problem and characters like Mrs Fillyjonk becoming catch-alls for every and any fillyjonk character in the moomins, alongside the hemulen becoming this... legion of the the same guy entirely not specific to a single entity until it suits the narrative, these feel like budgetary constraints which in turn leave the viewer feeling like none of this matters. Everything's been reduced down to a few key components, components that often don't line up with the characters' origins, and there aren't any surprises waiting given that it costs a lot of time and money (that they apparently weren't willing to invest) to model rig and voice a new character in 3D. Everything was always there from the start and you've seen it all the minute after you've seen each of the character's faces. Even props and immobile set dressings are reused blatantly and frequently. Cut, paste, ship. The woodies, mymble's kids, the hemulens, the whole lot. The firehose makes an appearance in the comet finale as the same model, which normally I'd compliment as a fun bit of homely continuity, but with the frequency of reappearing objects critters and locations, it feels... sandboxy.
Speaking of budget and constraints, the animation style is something i never got used to. Hot take, but 3D animation will never quite reach the coattails of 2D animation. It feels cheap no matter how technically impressive or high quality it is, which, to its credit, I'm not an animator but I'm aware from folks that are skilled in that area that MV19 is quite impressive. Also by the booble do not get me started on the horrible side mouth thing it really looks awful and I have opinions on that but that's not what we're here for. Anyway, whether you're for or against 3D being the go-to these days, I for one can't help but notice the drawbacks, which, often break my immersion. That's all to say nothing of things like snork going bald.
I could nitpick all day about creative choices, characters not lining up quite right, a complete lack of certain characters, or the swapping of roles and positions from what was originally one or several characters to a different character, but ultimately all of this would fail to encapsulate an actual sum of quality for the series as a whole. There's clear passion, effort, and all sorts of other good ingredients here. I can't dismiss the series as a whole, and honestly? It doesn't deserve to be dismissed, but it does reach the finish line lacking. It on its own is still enjoyable, and may even be someone's favorite I'm sure, but for me? I can't say I'm into it. There are a LARGE number of very valid complaints any given fan could muster when prompted with the question "what did you think of MV19?" and honestly far less things that this particular adaptation does that are memorable on their own merits. That being said, I very much enjoyed the time i spent with it and will surely watch it again at some point. I'm grateful for their being more moomin media going forward, and I'm glad this one went well enough. I'm grateful for MV19 bringing in new fans and bringing old ones together. I'm of the opinion that I'm happier when a show can forge memories with others rather than when a show on its own being a 10/10.
There was a lot I liked. And a lot more I didn't like. But, as Moominmamma said;
āThereās a lot of things one canāt understand, but why should everything be exactly as one is used to having it?ā
ā Moominsummer Madness
Also you didn't get queerbaited stop talking about it lol

Sorry if this is obvious but how did they retcon the moominpappa backstory? Do Hodgkins, Joxter, Muddler, and Fuzzy just straight up not exist?
Okay so like... let's start with the stuff the episodes actually tell us.
There's one episode where the Moomin family (Sniff, My and Snorkmaiden included) get invited to Aunt Jane's mansion, which is pretty cool to see tbh, we finally get to see what her living situation is (she doesn't even have a housekeeping staff, she's so goddamn lonely)
And in one scene the kids are cleaning a room and they happen upon a photo album, and the album features... a younger Moominpappa living with Aunt Jane at what appears to be a summer house....
Now, this is an odd discrepancy that goes unquestioned by the kids but it's not unreconcilable with Adventures of Moominpappa, maybe this is just one childhood summer Moominpappa deliberately left out of his story because it didn't contribute to his story and he doesn't like Jane. That's a minor enough piece of lore to make it make sense.
But then there's Return To Childhood, the episode with Wimsy.
After a mishap with the kids except Moomintroll mistaking Wimsy for an intruder, Wimsy and Moominpappa explain the history of their friendship to everyone, and what they say is uhhhh... (checks notes)
Moominpappa would constantly change schools in his childhood and then he and Wimsy were dormmates at the last school he went to.
...
Now that completely throws AoMP out the window.
We also have real tangible proof of this in the episode, Moominpappa and Wimsy try going on a little adventure together and they come across their old school, it even has the initials they carved on a tree and the same principal is still running the school (AND DOESN'T LOOK ANYTHING LIKE THE FILLYJONK PRINCIPAL).
And based on the kids that currently attend the school it seems that this is a an elementary/middle school?
(they're wearing costumes for a festival here)
And that's like. Woah. Holy crap??? Moominpappa like...... actually lied to us. ATLEAST about the majority of his life. And of course the kids don't question this because of Bad Writing BUT WE KNOW NOW.
Though, with all of this I'd have to backpedal and say that Edward the Booble as he was does in fact exist, there's an episode where the characters get Edward so they can use his tears to heal a mermaid tail, although he doesn't seem... quite as big as he was in AoMP (it could just be the animator's horrendous inability to be on model but this is beside the point)
The Ghost, is also real, we all saw him in the Dame Elaine episode didn't we. It's undeniably him, it has all the references we need without a shadow of a doubt despite the very different appearance between that episode and AoMP.
Allegedly he still lived on the island the Oshun Oxtra were on (but we could also argue that it wasn't necessarily that particular island, or it could mean that Moominpappa did in fact go to That island but the events didn't transpire the way MP said they did)
The fact Moominpappa is lying about his backstory could also explain his utter lack of familiarity with Mymblemamma despite his claims of having been friends with her in his youth (allegedly in the Japanese dub MP didn't actually say she was Little My's mother and that she was just another lookalike like the rest of the parents, but also allegedly in the Finnish dub he did say she was her mom, so which is it??) and we can't chalk it up to the show's lack of continuity because based on the Dame Elaine episode the show was perfectly capable of having continuity that adheres to MP's Memoirs even before they actually adapted it. (Both Dame Elaine and Moomin Builds a House were episodes before AoMP part 1)
And the most damning thing about this whole thing is that if you actually watch the AoMP episodes, Moominmamma explicitly had no way to call Moominpappa out on this, she explicitly doesn't know what his backstory was pre-meeting him. "But surely she'd point something out if she didn't know who the Oshun Oxtra was" WE DON'T KNOW IF SHE'D KNOW, SHE WAS LITERALLY OUT OF THE ROOM WHILE MOOMINPAPPA DESCRIBED THEIR MEETING, AND SHE OBVIOUSLY WASN'T HEARING WHAT MOOMINPAPPA WAS SAYING OR WHAT THE KIDS WERE TALKING ABOUT BECAUSE SHE WAS CONFUSED ABOUT THE KIDS STARING AT HER IN DISBELIEF.
IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW
MOOMINPAPPA IS JUST A BAD STORYTELLER AND I DON'T HAVE TO ACCEPT THE UTTER LACK OF CHARACTERIZATION AS REAL
IT'S ALL A LIE
JOXTER AND MUDDLER WERE PROBABLY OLD SCHOOLMATES FROM ONE OF HIS SCHOOLS AND THE REASON WHY THEY WERE LOOKALIKES AND PARENTS WERE BECAUSE HE DIDN'T ACTUALLY KNOW THAT THEY HAD KIDS
WOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

*coughs* HI SORRYYYY I'M BACK- I FEEL ASLEEP-
Anywqys uh. Books now :>
From left to right, top bottom top.
Comet in Moominland -- 1946 -- included the first appearances of many characters including Snufkin and Snorkmaiden.
Finn Family Moomintroll -- 1948 -- a small collection of various stories, including small blurbs for each character.
The Exploits of Moominpappa -- 1950 (revised later in 1968 and renamed "Moominpappa's Memoirs") -- tales of Moominpappa's youth, when he was still called Moomintroll. Includes new characters such as the Joxter (Snufkin's father) Hodgkin, and the Muddler (Sniff's father)
The Book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My -- 1952 -- Ngl I don't know much about this book other than the fact Mymble and Little My are sisters
Moominsummer Madness -- 1954 -- infuriatingly close to romance between Snufkin and Moomin during a prison break. Pretty sure Snufkin's iconic line "let's go fill Moominvalley with crime" is in the 90s anime adaptation of this book. Something to do with a failing theatre but it's kind of overshadowed by Snufkin's and Moomin's pining./hj (Please they're so gay it hurts)
Moominland Midwinter -- 1957 -- Moomintroll wakes up from hibernation (yes they hibernate) and is unable to go back to sleep. Too-ticky (white and red striped sweater, if you wanna look 'em up) helps him through it.
Who Will Comfort Toffle? -- 1960 -- Toffle leaves his home to try and find friends (he's a lonely lil' guy. Wet cat vibes.) And ends up rescuing Miffle (another character, doesn't appear much) from The Groke
Tales from Moominvalley -- 1962 -- a collection of short stories
Moominpappa at Sea -- 1965 -- The Moomins basically move away to an island, along with Little My and The Groke. It's. Really sad actually.
Moominvalley in November -- 1970/71 -- last official book, it's basically all the characters trying to find out what happened to the Moomin family, as they found their home abandoned. Also I keep forgetting to mention Fillyjonk. Everyone say hi to Fillyjonk, the Moomins' neighbor. I probably won't speak of her again. Anyways, the book ends with them not fully finding out what happened.
The Dangerous Journey -- 1977 -- last book written by Tove before her death, it follows a human that accidentally got into Moominvalley. Happy ending, though.
Damn that's alot of books- I feel like if I had these as a kid I wouldve re-read them so many times they'd be committed to memory and probably had my own self insert oc to imagine going on adventures with them
Good Lord how did I not know I was autistic- XD

I didn't read the whole list. 4, 9, 13, please?
ask game for fanfic writers [x]
(secret fact, I can never read too many question at a time on these long ones without pen & paper to write down my choices, or else I'll lose them by the time I go to whomever's inbox to ask them 0u0)
4. what is the plot bunny youāve been carrying for the longest? optional bonus question: do you ever wonder why you havenāt written it yet and experience deep existential dread?
fghsjfh if we're talking fanfic, this prize might go to a Moomins (novel canon) fic I started thinking about at least fifteen years ago. It was a direct continuation from the end of Moominvalley in November, the last in the series, following Toft as he grows up. There were a few things I was doing with it: 1. I'm fascinated with characters like him who are unique beings (Toft is ambiguously orphaned and is compared to, but not of any, canon species) who have no way of knowing what stage of life they're really in, or how long their lifespan might be. I decided what Toft's parentage was. 2. Because of what Toft is, he was then in a position to lift a curse on someone else that I believe has basis in canon. 3. Endgame polyamorous pile of creatures. As one does.
I wrote around 5000 words of this thing, and it was good, damn it. It survived the deaths of three different computers and still exists on an external hard drive in a box somewhere. I stopped writing it for the usual reasons: got stuck, lost momentum, and forgot 80% of it. :/ My brain is a sieve, and yes, the existential dread is real.
For original work, it's a tie between KM and the Nightmare Story. Both of those date back to when I was 13 years old. Walk Twice is a little younger, but I started doodling what became the main character when I was 16. The reason none of these exist yet is basically just paralysis because art is hard, writing is hard, and all of these could/should involve both, unfortunately. Also I hate being perceived. I dunno, man. Bits of all of them exist, it's just... hard.
9. in an ideal world where youāre already super successful and published, would you want to see a tv or movie adaptation of your work? why or why not?
I'm gonna quote the Stardew Valley creators on this one and say, Only if Studio Ghibli is interested. (But seriously, it is one of my wildest dreams for that studio to pick up the Nightmare Story. Got your flying creatures, got your bizarre magical powers that work in cryptic ways, got sentient landscapes, got kids of various species saving each other - it's got a bunch of elements Miyazaki loves, why not??) I can't say I'd ever want to see live action for any of my stuff. It's not built for it, and I wouldn't want any actors' faces stuck to anyone.
13. talk about a writing experience that has pleasantly surprised you.
Uhhhhh hm, well, there is that special category of fic that springs fully-formed out of nowhere and simply works, just lets me write it in one go from start to finish. I have two of these on AO3; they are Vicious Circle and Black Tuesday.

Snufkin from the Japanese anime adaptation "Shin Mumin" of 1972.
7w7 I was hoping someone would ask me this specifically, thanks šššš
*deep inhale*
OKEY š
It's not secret that I'm absolutely and positivity NUTS for this character, he's blorbo of my heart.
But I don't think I ever mentioned why (besides the fact that I think his design is so fine šš).
When I was first entering the Moomin fandom, doing research and stuff, I was actually kinda surprised at this weird version of the moomins, like, they don't look like the 90's or 19's version at all (the two series that I had first contact with). And then you have this peculiar looking snufkin, no green, no brunette hair, no armonica, basically a whole new thing. I didn't think much of it until I saw a couple of clips of the series and after a while of joking, hearing "Osabishiyama no Uta.mp3" a couple of times, and despite not understanding ONE IOTA OF WHAT THE CHARACTERS WERE SAYING, I pretty much fell for this version of snufkin.
He's been my comfort character and favorite character to draw for some time now, and honestly, I think he brings the best of me š.
He does seem to have some flaws in the communication department, and thanks to someone (*cough* @laecandraw ) that did some translation for me , I know that he can be stubborn and pretty much inclined to leave if the scene makes him uncomfortable or he sometimes doesn't really care, but he's almost always right, has god like reflexes(this is where the Mary suesness come to shine XD) and generally could be one of the most "wise" and "mature" snufkin of them all.Kind, protective, patient, little playful sometimes, cute..OKEY I'll stop.
Also, bonus points for being one of the most affectionate adaptations of snufkin š.
I'm very aware that this version did have some controversy, especially with Tove herself, I like the character just for being him, if that makes sense..I think he has a lot of layers, he seem bland at first, but, idk, he's engaging if you don't think of him as "a snufkin".
AND HE SO DAMN FINE LIKE...ANAJABZJANJZANNW
Anyway, thanks for coming to ted talk xd
#thanks fot the ask pal <3#moomin#snufkin#72's snufkin#winedrop#shin snufkin#i just love him so much

āØā„ļøšššµšæš²šÆš
This turned out really long so I'm putting it under a read more
āØwho is your favourite moomin character and why?
I love most of the characters but my favorite is Snufkin! Book Snufkin especially, I just find him really interesting and relatable in a way, but I find it hard to explain why I like him specifically. My brain decides to latch onto a particular character and I just go with it š
ā„ļøif you could befriend any moomin character, who would it be?
As much as I love Snufkin I don't think we'd get along lmao, so I'm going with Moominmamma. She's really kind but also adventurous, I think she'd be fun to hang out with :)
šwhen did you first discover the moomins?
I first learned about Moomin through a youtuber named Jaiden (I think? I haven't watched his videos in years). He used a clip from Tanoshii Moomin Ikka as a transition for his videos, but I didn't really get into it until the Moomin boom from 2019
šdo you have any moomin merch / memorabilia / plushies?
Not yet š Moomin merch tends to be expensive unfortunately. I'd love to get this tho look at him he's so cute
šµsongs that make you think of the moomins, or songs you think would fit perfectly as part of the soundtrack?
This is the opposite of what the question is asking but I think a lot of music from Tanoshii Moomin Ikka would fit the Mother games perfectly, especially Mother 3. They give me similar vibes and sometimes they straight up sound the same to the point I actually tried to look up if the composers were inspired by each other in some way.
There are also a couple of italian songs that remind me of Moomin. The first one is called Maledetta Primavera (Damned Spring). It's a really popular song here and until recently I only knew the refrain, so I looked up the rest of the lyrics since it reminded me of Snufmin so much and uuh there's a NSFW line...which is too bad cause the rest of the song really makes me think of Snufmin ("I can't act like it's not love anymore if by mistake I close my eyes and think of you" is such a Snufkin line...) so I'm just gonna pretend I do not see it and pretend the song is about Moomin and Snufkin pining for each other and thinking their love is unrequited ā¤
And another song is Io Vagabondo which translates to "Me Vagabond" so yeah I obviously associate it with Snufkin
šæwhat's your favourite moomin book?
I think my favorite is probably Moominland Midwinter. I really didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did cause the way they adapted it in Tanoshii Moomin Ikka and Moominvalley didn't really impress me, but I was pleasantly surprised. I find myself thinking more about Moominvalley in November though so I think that's a close second
š²what's your favourite episode of moomin (this can be any of the older anime series or the 2019 moominvalley series!)
I don't remember Tanoshii Moomin Ikka very well cause I watched it over 2 years ago and I only rewatched some of the episodes recently, but I remember really liking the Ninny episodes, that's when I really started to get invested.
Not an anime but I also liked The Catastrophe episode from Fuzzy Felt Moomins, mostly because it just told me what I needed to hear in that moment and it really helped me (and I just love the Fillyjonk Who Believed in Disasters)
Also not an anime but shout out to the musical adaptation of Who Will Comfort Toffle from 1980, it's my favorite adaptation and I can't not mention it.
As for Moominvalley my favorite is definitely The Spring Tune, the only thing I didn't like about it is how they turned Snorkmaiden into a jealous girlfriend. And Snufkin is just iconic. It's also really gay
šÆif you could make any moomin recipe, what would it be?
Honestly I'd love to try anything Moominmamma makes, maybe pancakes? Also not really a recipe but I saw they made Moomin chestnut sweets and I love chestnuts, I really wanna try those especially
šwhat's your favourite song on the 2019 moominvalley soundtrack?
This is a tough one cause I like most of the songs, but I find myself listening more to Love Me With All Of Your Heart and Country Air. I also like Cloudy if anything cause it sounds more old-timey than the rest and I think that fits Moomin better than pop songs.
Thank you so much for the ask!!

bunnybuddybonnie replied to your post:Ā ācan someone whoās been more into major fandoms...ā
Ye the fandom from the renaissance seemed to strip away a lot of Snufmins interesting contrasting personality from the books for the sake of easy basic happy relationship vibes. This could be a result of ATG but I feel like the 90s anime being a popular adaptation is also partly to blame. The 90s anime also strips a lot of interesting personality from the characters for the sake of happy aesthetic. Not as bad as the fandom but it could be part of where its coming from.
Oh indeed indeed!Ā Like, I canāt completely fault fanartists for not knowing how to write Toft, or not knowing how much everyone in Moominvalley loves coffee, because things do get lost in translation to another medium!
But I guess what makes it so... unpleasantĀ and weird... to me is how snufmin, Snufkin, and Moomintroll areĀ all almost everyone seems to care about.Ā Every other fandom Iām in, thereās ALWAYS been people who donāt just write the main pairings and characters-- theyāll be off writing stories about another aspect of the media that they like, or who their favorite character is.Ā At this moment, there are 1,687 works in Mumintroll | Moomins Series - Tove Jansson on Ao3. Ā If you exclude snufmin from search results, that number goes down to 753. I donāt see modern fans who are really into other characters like Fillyjonk, the Hemulen, or even Sniff!Ā Itās almostĀ all about Snufkin and/or Moomintroll, even in fics that arenāt romantic.Ā Iāll be real with you: I like Snufkin.Ā I, like many Snufkin fans, relate to him, and I admit I probably even project on him a bit.Ā But the Snufkin I see in most fanfics I read?Ā Thatās someone else.
AndĀ Moomins isnāt like OFF where almost nobody has recurring speaking roles or names, and worldbuilding is vague and sparse, making fanon interpretation practically mandatory.Ā Moomins has a LOT of characters.Ā It has a LOT of reference for how they behave.Ā Canon characterization in Moomins does change from book to book, and by adaptation, but like... a lot of the time, fanon characterization doesnāt even feel like itās from any of those!! And whatās also weird is how many Moomins fanartists are the type who like to dig for additional lore and will STILL write Snufkin and Moomin like that.Ā Even if they donāt have access to the books, theyāre thirsty for that sweet canon content!Ā And theyāll learn it-- be likeĀ ācool! I love that!ā-- and go right back to writing Typical Snufmin Fanfic #935.Ā Theyāll talk about how much love they think a minor character deserves, but as artists they choose to make only what everyone else does.Ā Thereās a branch of fanworks that gush over Joxter and the Oshun Oxtra crew, yeah, but the made up characterization in those is a whole nother animal.Ā There are these artists who know a lot aboutĀ Moominsās lore and world and side characters, and they claim to be hype about it all and think itās super underrated, and YET all they choose to draw or write is the same old thing with a different sauce and side dish.
Heck, Iām rambling a bit here.Ā This is NOT me telling people to cut it out or anything, or to make something else they donāt want to.Ā BUT damn... the absence of variety is fucking jarring and lowkey haunting to me.Ā Basically every Moomins fanartist Iāve gotten invested in has left the fandom already, often for these very reasons. If there are people in the modern Moomins fandom who adore the other characters and have stories in their heads that center them, theyāre not the fans who are drawing or writing about them in public.Ā This all is just the sort of thing thatās worth pointing out, in my opinion.
#yes I am a Snufkin fan/apologist yes I sneer at fanon Snufkin we exist#remember when I was all about Groke? you couldn't miss it#feeling Weird remembering a doodle set of mine that Got Bigger Notes just b/c it included Snuf and Moom sitting next to each other#I could talk about this for ages if anyone else has follow-up questions. maybe I'd ramble less if ppl got Specific lol#bunnybuddybonnie#reply#long post

Okay, bit of a shit post but uh- I remembered that a common criticism I kept seeing when the 2019 adaptation first came out was that people wished the moominsā snouts were as big as they were in the 90s anime. So uh... I got curious and made an actual attempt at a bigger nose and well- whatever the third pic is. XD I donāt think people realize how big the Moomins heads were compared to their small bodies because damn they were huge and would not fit for this specific 3D model.šĀ
Well which one do you think looks good though? Orignal or edit? I think both look fine.^^
All big snuffers are great though. ^v^
#this is a joke#don't take it too seriously please XD#moominvalley#moominvalley 2019#moomin#moomins#moomintroll#tanoshii moomin ikka#my art#moomin edit#the moomins

i watched the first episode of the adaptation from 1972 of moomin!!!
snufkin wasn't in the first ep but it's normal- it took place during winter
if i understand it well there was an animal that ate bad dreams so he appeared in the dreams of everyone hibernating but they were all scared of him so they spent the whole ass ep running away until the animal actually finally managed to do smth nice
moominpapa/moominmama both have dark skin and tbh idk wtf they did w snorkmaiden n snork bc those colours should be banned
snork what happened to your hair
anyway this snorkmaiden is Awful. god bless the 90's adaptation of moomin just for not making her like she is in this show. she's got sparkly shoujo eyes, and spends the entire fucking episode whining "mooooominnnn" and clinging on to him literally all the damn time oh.my god
i'm excited about snufkin!!!!!!! i've seen some adorable screenshots
it's voiced in jp but i think the voices fit very well so it aint a problem
i'll tell you about interesting episodes i watch next timeš love you have fun

Bloom is making the impulsive decision to start a lyric comic about Moominmamma but I'm struggling to pick which of 3 songs to draw so I'm making it everyone else's problem!
Me and My Husband would be about Moominmamma's relationship with Moominpappa from her perspective. It is the existentialism and innate compliance of being a housewife but being committed to being married to a man she loves and who loves her back. Moominmamma has shown herself to have no qualms about what it means to be a wife and mother, and her leniency towards her husband is almost second nature to her despite his history of having personal hangups and habits that should've been resolved before their engagement, but this is the dynamic they've built up from the start and it continues to the very end of our view of their story.
āAnd I am the idiot with a painted face
In the corner, taking up space
But when he walks in, I am loved, I am loved
Me and my husband, we are doing better
It's always been just him and me
Togetherā
-
Unassimilated Normie would be about Moominmamma's struggles between conformity and taboo, especially within the comics and their animated adaptations. On the surface she seems to be an exemplary housewife - kind, understanding and undemanding, but when under the lens of scrutiny she becomes very strange, habits and ideas that don't conform to the rigid structures placed by society and alot of unawareness for things that should be considered common knowledge or sense. Despite her seemingly aloof attitude towards society's expectations and progress, she still buckles under them when the conflict of the week arises or when she's faced by a direct opponent like Mrs. Fillyjonk. She is a "normal" person who still sits outside the confines of normalcy because of circumstance. An unassimilated normie.
āOh taboo, how I both love and hate you
How some days, I only want to break you
But what is broken seems a mess at least to be
The one who breaks the silence, to face alone the violence
Whilst I sit and watch in safe and silent agreementā
-
Oom Sha La La would be about the personal frustrations Moominmamma has with a number of things, a frustration I'll be basing particularly on the comic Moomin and the Sea; where she heavily dislikes the lighthouse island the family has moved to and would love to start a garden to keep her frustrations at bay if the damned ground wasn't so lacking in fertile dirt. It expresses a side we don't see too much in Moominmamma, she is left completely out of her element and everything is working against her, and she is taking her frustration out on things that aren't even the cause of her frustrations. She needs to start a garden.
āI'm throwing out the milk
The olives got old
I'm tired of my mind getting heavy with mold
I need to start a garden
I need to start a garden
I need to start a garden
I need to start a garden!ā

Damn sis, I wonder who's your Blorbo.
Ok now for real, who's your eeby deeby?
I know that probably this should only have Moomin stuff but as the original post says to also pick a fandom, I would like to know the eeby deeby of both Moomin and S.U.
Hm. I'm not sure if I should interpret "send to superhell" as (because I hate them) or (for silly little "crimes" like being gay or whatever)
I'll just go with the latter since the former is a little hard to answer for me, I don't exactly have a character I absolutely despise or consider a least favorite, maybe adaptations of characters in Moomin's case sure but in their entirety I wouldn't say I hate them, if you had to force me it'd probably be Stinky for attempted child murder in the 90s series. But for Steven Universe I'd send Kevin to eeby deeby.
The answer(s) for the latter are Joxter and Peridot.
Joxter for being a queer little cat with a grudge against park keepers and Peridot for hyperfixating on a Canadian camp drama.
