BMC Racing stormed their way to victory in the team time trial on the opening day of action at Tirreno-Adriatico. 

The American team almost came to the line with a full complement of riders, losing just one rider in the closing kilometres, and posted a time of 23:20 on the 22.7km route around the Tuscany seaside resort of Lido di Camaiore.

As the team entered the final stretch, they had a minute to work with but the drag was long and they held 17 seconds on Quick-Step Floors by the time they hit the line. Italian Damiano Caruso sprinted to the front of the group to lead them over and put himself into the first blue jersey. As the team's GC hopes collapsed at Paris-Nice this week, the victory sets up the general classification campaign of Tejay van Garderen nicely.

Nairo Quintana will also be satisfied with how his Movistar team performed. In Tuesday's pre-race press conference, Quintana had said the stage would be about limiting losses and they did that and more, clocking the third quickest time at just 22 seconds behind BMC.

Orica-Scott was the only other team to dip below the 24-minute mark with their effort of 22:45, putting Adam Yates into a strong position ahead of the mountains.

Michele Cavataio A.K.A Il Cobra - City of Palermo  (Mandamento Acquasanta) - Mafia Siciliana

Also known as Il cobra (The cobra) was an Italian mobster and powerful member of the Sicilian Mafia. He was the boss of the Acquasanta mandamento in Palermo and was a member of the first Sicilian Mafia Commission. Some sources spell his surname as Cavatajo.

Cavataio was one of the most feared mafioso gangsters of his time. His nickname The Cobra allegedly came from his favorite firearm, the Colt Cobra, a six-shot revolver.He was described as a cunning killer with a gorilla-like face.

Cavataio was seen as an exponent of a 'new' Mafia of Americanised gangsters that appeared in the mid 1950s. After World War II, he made his fortune selling petrol that was stolen from the Italian Navy. From the modest position of a taxi driver, he accumulated a considerable fortune in a few years, according to a report of the Parliamentary Antimafia Commission.The Acquasanta Mafia family controlled the docks of Palermo that were situated in their area. They acted as strike breakers against the dockworkers, and did not hesitate to shoot at the strikers if necessary.

El ataque es conocido como la Matanza de Viale Lazio.

Los asesinos entraron en la oficina de la empresa de construcción de Girolamo Moncada, el constructor que con anterioridad había hecho negocios con Angelo La Barbera y ahora estaba con Cavataio. Cavataio fue capaz de disparar y matar a Calogero Bagarella y herir a Caruso antes de que Provenzano lo matase. Provenzano salvó la situación con su ametralladora Beretta Model 38/42 con lo que se ganó una reputación como eficaz asesino.
