Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Oscar-winner Olivia Colman and producer Francesca Moody (Fleabag) are launching The Theatre Community Fund, which will provide grants to UK theatre professionals who have been struggling economically during the coronavirus pandemic.

Donors will contribute through initial lump sums and, innovatively, through fixed, confidential percentages of their incomes over the next two years. The fund will be separated into two priority strands giving grants of up to £3,000:

To help freelancers survive the present by providing hardship grants to those in immediate need.

To ensure a healthy future for the industry by providing innovation and creation grants for artists to produce work.

Among first donors to the fund, which has amassed £1M to date, are Tom Hiddleston, Gillian Anderson, Danny Boyle, Emilia Clarke, Richard Curtis, Kit Harrington, Ian McKellen, Daisy Ridley, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Thompson and Rachel Weisz. Scroll down for the list in full.

The group explained that the fund “reflects its donors’ recognition that they have benefitted a great deal personally from the health of the UK theatre, and is a statement of their belief that UK theatre – nationally for all audiences and voices and down its grass roots – is vital to the strength of our nation.”

Waller-Bridge, Colman and Moody conceived the fund as a longer-term supplement to other schemes already in existence. It will be dispersed and monitored by The Royal Theatrical Fund (RTF) in partnership with the Fleabag Support Fund (FSF), which has been raising money to help theatre professionals during the pandemic. In May 2020, FSF disseminated its first wave of grants of around £83,000.

The founders of the fund said they “will continue to appeal to all performers, artists, producers and executives – anyone who believes in the theatrical arts and has benefited from them – to contribute to the fund, if in a position to do so.”

Sam Mendes recently set up the Theatre Artists Fund, which launched at the start of July with a £500,000 donation from Netflix. It received 4,000 applications in less than a month and provides one-off grants of £1,000. The fund has raised more than £1.6M to date with contributors including Michaela Coel, Armando Iannucci and Imelda Staunton. £85,000 was raised from the public.

Thousands of theatrical freelancers are currently sidelined due to the shutdown of theaters and prospect of re-opening remain uncertain.

You’ve been invited by a unnamed person to a party in a huge mansion that you’ve never noticed in town before. The party is in full swing, when suddenly you find yourself locked inside of a room with another person. You don’t know how or when the doors will open, so make the most of your time. Some of the fates have brought lovers together, some of brought drama together, some are giving those the push they need, and others are luck of the draw. 

You must have some form of interaction with the person you are paired with. This can be done in para, gif, chat or chatty form. You will have from the SATURDAY 17TH OCTOBER to SATURDAY 31ST OCTOBER to complete this. 

Your characters will remember everything that happens on this night. This is a Halloween party so feel free to post your characters costumes from now until the 31st. Also, if you did not sign up a character to the task, feel free for them to attend the Halloween party as normal!

Elegy for Jessica Jones

I am a big Marvel comics fan. Got in through the X-Men cartoon series. I related to Rogue's fear of someone touching her. I aspired to be as confident (and hyper verbal, in that cartoon) as Storm. It made her seem so in charge and not afraid to call attention to herself. "Meet me at the monorail!" is a thing I randomly say loudly sometimes.

Since the MCU era, we have only gotten a few lady heroes with the focus on them. Captain Marvel is obviously the biggest and soon we will have Black Widow too. But I am not like those two women. Carol is who I want to be when I grow up, of course. But I am still in my thirties and waiting for that to happen.

It has been in the Marvel TV shows that I have most seen myself. Peggy Carter, Daisy Johnson and, in particular: Jessica Jones.

I had read the Marvel Max comic about Jessica Jones and was greatly disturbed by the things she suffered at the hands of the Purple Man. And I was blown away by her relationship with Luke Cage, who not only accepted what happened to her but let her handle it and told her she was brave.

In (Catholic school) sex ed they talk a lot about women who are "used" and how we should save ourselves for our husbands. Jessica was violated by Kilgrave but her HUSBAND thought it was something to be proud of.

And I wept.

Then they made the Jessica Jones and Luke Cage series (plural) on Netflix and I was so excited to see them. One thing I didn't realize that would hit me so hard was that between the time I read the comics and the show coming out was that I was sexuality assaulted. I was diagnosed with PTSD years later.

There has never been a scene in a superhero movie or show than that moment when Jessica heard all the noise and is startles by the cop coming up to her. It was a small moment. Maybe some of you don't remember it. But that is kind of my life.

Yet she battled through it. She saved her sister. She was a superhero.

I know the Jessica Jones series was not perfect. I didn't love season 2. I know there were issues with race (I, in particular, wish Eka Darville as Malcolm got to do more because he was great).

But I still think this was an important show to have made. I think Luke Cage was as well, for different reasons.

I am sad to see the Marvel Netflix era end with a whimper. One of the reasons cited for Luke Cage's cancellation was that there were too few tweets about the second season compared to the first. That Netflix relies on social media engagement.

Netflix doesn't have rights anymore but I wanted to make this post, and I will be tweeting and JJ 3 as I watch. I encourage anyone else who was touched by these shows to do so as well, even just to say goodbye to your faves.

While I was on my mini-break, I saw that the news over the weekend that Tom Hughes is going to play Christopher Marlowe in the second series of the fantasy series A Discovery of Witches has got a few people asking if this means Victoria is no more.

My opinion? Probably not. Although I have posted myself that seeing Jenna or Tom cast in a new TV series might be a sign that Victoria is done, I was more talking about, for example, Jenna being cast in some American-format, 22-episode series, or some project like a major film that we know would take up an extended period of time. The brilliance of the UK/streaming TV model where (unless it’s something like Coronation Street or Emmerdale) seasons are usually 4, 6, 8 episodes (less if you’re Sherlock) and shows are not beholden to keeping to an every-year schedule (less if you’re Sherlock), means there’s plenty of room for Tom or Jenna to take on other roles (just as Jenna did with The Cry last year).

There is also plenty of precedent: remember how Peter Davison, for nearly all of his time as the Fifth Doctor, required Doctor Who production to take a mid-season break of several months each year in order for him to star in a sitcom called Sink or Swim. Red Dwarf’s 4th through 6th seasons were made at the same time that Chris Barrie was starring in The Brittas Empire, and for Red Dwarf’s first few seasons, Danny John-Jules alternated between RD and Maid Marion and Her Merry Men. Arthur Darvill managed to film his roles in both Broadchurch in the UK and Legends of Tomorrow in Canada at the same time (albeit he had to be written out of Legends temporarily in order to do it).

So for Tom Hughes fans, this is good news. But as far as the future of Victoria goes, though, it doesn’t mean much (if A Discovery of Witches is very popular - I wasn’t aware there was a TV series before now myself - it might even get some extra eyeballs on Victoria 4). ITV and PBS have yet to announce either way (and we know Daisy Goodwin has already written at least some of the Series 4 scripts per her Instagram posts), so until they do, there’s nothing official. I’m just curious to find out if Jenna has anything lined up, as there’s time for her to sign up for another show too or (even better, IMO) do a movie - and this time in a lead role, not a supporting or cameo appearance.

EDIT: Since posting this, I’ve had it pointed out that PBS actually announced its fall schedule last week, with no mention of Victoria. This is not surprising, and it doesn’t mean of course a cancellation. Even if they started filming today they wouldn’t be able to make a January 2020 broadcast on PBS so we’ll probably be looking at January 2021 (though ITV could air earlier or later depending on when filming eventually begins). Stay tuned...
