Sure, maybe other guys on Earth might've made fun of Quill for practice-talking to Gamora, but not Pietro. It was funny, sure, but he was laughing with Quill, not at him. It really proved how much Gamora meant to him that he would be so concerned with getting every word right, or with sounding the smoothest he could possibly sound. Gamora seemed like really hard woman to reel in, too, just from Pietro's own limited assessment, so he understood why Quill held himself to high standards. It was cute, and quite honestly, Pietro wished his friends well. He hoped they ended up together. They seemed perfect for each other, even if Gamora maybe wasn't ready to admit that to herself yet.
"Definitely," Pietro said, playing along. "You've really got your own unique brand of um... you know, what you do," he said with a smile and a nod. "You go in with that, she won't be able to resist it, I'm sure." Effortlessly suave wasn't quite what Pietro would call it, but it didn't need to be. He had a feeling Gamora would like whatever Quill said because it was him. That's how love worked. "Thanks, man, much appreciated," he said with regard to the Zune.
Even though Pietro's comment had made Mantis light up, her reaction to what he'd said in turn had the same effect on him. He grinned widely to see how happy it'd made her. "Truly, yes," he confirmed with a solid nod. When she wrapped her arms around his waist, he gave her shoulders an affectionate little squeeze. And when Quill told Pietro not to mention anything to Gamora about his little practicing session, Pietro waved his worries away. "Don't worry. I won't say a single word, promise." He meant it, too. He'd never want to embarrass his friend or get in the middle of his courting of Gamora.
He and Mantis walked back to his room, and she yet again brought a smile to his face with her sweet words. "Yeah? Thank you. That means a lot coming from someone I care for and respect very much," he said. "Am sure they will! Oh, feel free to tell anyone looking for the Zune where I am, as always. Unless you want to stay and listen for a while," he said, lifting up the Zune in his hand a bit. "I know you were tired before when I knocked on your door, though, so am not pressuring you to."
Mantis' assessment of Pietro and Groot's friendship was correct, of course. Groot did fill a sort of little sibling role for Pietro, and thus the speedster felt once again like a protective big brother. With or without Wanda, this sort of role was something Pietro didn't know he actually needed as part of his identity and self-fulfillment until it simply wasn't there anymore. Fortunately, the Guardians all collectively seemed to be protective of tiny Groot, and it had been easy for Pietro to fall in line right behind them.
Plus Groot was such a cute little guy. It was so easy for Pietro to feel protective of him when Groot was smiling or dancing or saying all manner of silly things that children say. He might not look like a human being, but there were definite similarities between Groot and human children. The jokes, the tantrums, the bargaining, the mischief... Pietro was starting to realize that children were alike all over the galaxy, and that wasn't a bad thing.
"He's not that good either," Pietro said, chuckling. "But hey, listen... with music, is about feeling it and enjoying it, not necessarily being able to sing to it well, yeah?"
But when they came upon Quill not only singing terribly but acting out hypothetical scenes with Gamora, Pietro couldn't help it. He burst out laughing. It was cute, really. "Oh, wow. Wow..." he said. "That was uh... that was good, man, really," he said sarcastically.
As Mantis said to Quill that Gamora wasn't there in the room with him, Pietro turned to her, ready to help a lovesick dude out. "No, no... I get this, is a thing, I totally get this," Pietro said. He knew Mantis wasn't familiar with human guys and their strange dating rituals, and even though Quill was only half human, he still apparently had enough human genetics in him to still be comically dudebro-ish at times. "You see... you have to practice before you talk to her. The girl you like. You practice beforehand so that you aren't nervous when you actually do talk to her. Then you can be super suave and sweep her off her feet." He looked at Quill. "Right?"
Now he felt like maybe Quill needed the Zune to adequately prepare for something. "No, is okay, I can get from you later, yeah? If you need it to uh... to help with the practicing... I can get from you later." But Quill seemed to want to give it up, which made Pietro frown. "Are you sure? I don't want to interrupt the process," he said, unable to keep smirking. "But yes, Mantis bought me new headphones," he said, putting his arm around her shoulders. "Because she is awesome like that. But you knew that already."

"Well, am sorry to interrupt your reading, but... am also very glad that you came to help me. You're very sweet, thank you," Pietro said with a nod and a smile. "And is also really good to know I don't make weird noises like a dork in my sleep." He chuckled and ran his fingers through his hair with his good hand.
Pietro wasn't surprised at all to hear that Mantis didn't fully understand every detail of her powers and how they worked yet. In his eyes, she could do such amazing things, and many varied things. So of course there would be facets of those powers that are yet undiscovered by her and ways in which she can use her power that she hasn't thought of yet. Also, he knew himself that as he grew from a child to a teenager and now an adult, his powers changed and grew with him. There were things he could do now that he couldn't do when he was little, and even the things he could do had changed a bit as he himself changed.
"Is okay, don't worry," he said to her by way of encouragement. "You'll figure it out eventually. Take your time, there is no rush. You know... I didn't know how to use my powers either. Not really. When I was little, I'd have these bursts of speed but they were random and I couldn't control them. Or I could kindof get it to come out if I really pushed but then I'd get so tired. But after I was experimented on, everything got amplified so much that I felt like I didn't know my own body anymore. I was literally running into the walls of my cell because the speed would start up so fast that I couldn't get a handle on it before... crash, right into the wall. But I am much better at it now. It takes practice and some soul-searching." He shrugged and smiled. "You just have to live with yourself and learn to know yourself. You can do it, Mantis. I have so much faith in you that you can do all kinds of incredible things."
He lifted her up and then rubbed a couple times at her back with his good hand. "Of course you can join me. There is pretty much never a time when I don't enjoy your company, Mantis." As they started walking, Pietro reflected a bit on his nightmare. It bothered him that he'd been so scared of something but couldn't remember what. Was it important? Should he try to remember? Sometimes he ended up remembering later on. Right now, though, he didn't want to bring down the mood, especially after she'd been so kind as to help him. "What kind of tea are you going to make?" he asked. "I prefer coffee, but I have to say, every time you make tea, it always smells so good."
Mantis smiled, amazed by Pietro's ability to maintain his sense of humor even after his mind had played a trick on him. She admired him all the more for it, and it once again reaffirmed that he was fit to be a Guardian of the Galaxy. She chuckled at his question, shaking her head.
"No, you were not making noises, I... I guess I could just feel it. I could try to explain it to you, but... I am afraid I do not understand it well either," she said with a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. There was just the faintest hint of embarrassment in her expression and her voice. Pietro probably thought she wasn't a bit clumsy, not understanding her own abilities. But Mantis did not know that Pietro's sister Wanda didn't fully understand the enormity of her own power either.
Taking Pietro's hand when he offered, she let him help her up with a quiet thank you. She smiled and nodded when he said he would make himself some coffee. Decaf.
"May I join you?" Mantis asked almost timidly. "I would like to keep you company. I could make myself some tea." She did not bring up that Pietro had been afraid in his sleep, nor that he could talk to her about his nightmare if he wanted. Mantis was willing to simply sit in silence with him, as long as he wasn't alone after such an unpleasant experience.

I love how rocket just casually stole a turtle from earth in the sotg au fkdjdhfjfsdfjkl
{out of breath} Right?! It's such a random and chaotic thing to do, lol. But then again, Rocket seems like a pretty chaotic guy to me. XD I think it was a great way to kindof slip comic-based Mr. Dibbles into the MCU too, so I loved it, haha. =)

I feel like Thanos would EASILY get Pietro *that* angry (in reference to that one gifset)
{out of breath} This is in reference to this gifset, for those who are wondering. And oh yeah, most definitely, Thanos could get him That Angry. Especially if this is (obviously) an AU where Pietro not only survived AoU but also survived the Snap... but Wanda didn't. And especially especially if this is in the SotG (Speedster of the Galaxy) AU where he bonds with all the Guardians, only to lose most of them to the Snap too. Yeah. He'd be That Angry. And he really wouldn't care what happened to him anymore, like he'd be recklessly in search of bitter revenge. If he had to yeet himself into the sun just to fry Thanos, that would be done without hesitation on his part, like... whatever he has to do to take him out, Pietro's gonna do it.

" well hello, I have heard some things about you. It's nice to meet you mr. maximoff.
"Good things, I hope?" Pietro asked. Around the Avengers compound, rumors flying around about him weren't necessarily a good thing. Though, it was nice to hear someone call him Mr. Maximoff once in a while instead of other assorted things he was often called. "Is nice to meet you too. What's your name?"

Pietro was immediately concerned about this woman. Alarm bells were going off in his mind already. Coming from a war torn country, where soldiers and police abused power and the stress of everyday life resulted in various types of suffering and abusive behavior, he'd learned the warning signs. Her body language was giving off all sorts of messages right now, and none of it was good.
"Yes, am sure, is okay, just take a deep breath," he said gently. "Look, I can get it for you, yeah? Watch this." In a quick flash, he took his glass, went around the bar, refilled it, and came back to his seat. The remnants of his slipstreamstuffs hung in the air for a few seconds before disappearing. "How is that, huh? Bet you never saw anyone do anything like that before." If it got a smile or some amount of excitement out of her, Pietro will have met his goal. Really, he was just trying to distract her from her troubles, whatever they might be.

Pietro was quick - when was he ever not quick? - to grab hold of his glass of cherry vodka before it spilled completely, though most of it was a loss. "Is okay, accidents happen. Relax, is fine. I have money for another," he said with a smile. This poor woman seemed a little more than sorry she spilled his drink, she seemed... almost afraid that he'd get angry about it? It was just a sense he got from her reaction. "Is alright, really. Hey, I am little bit of a clutz myself. Don't worry about it. I put it too close to the edge anyway. Is my fault," he said, laying his hand over his chest and maintaining his smile in an attempt to put her more at ease. He suddenly. was glad for the credit card Tony had given him. He put it on the bar. "It was good, though, so I'll have another one," he said.

Playing along with the simplistic and often faulty logic and reasoning of children was something Pietro enjoyed doing. He liked to encourage them, but he also liked to indulge himself in their innocence for a while. He'd lost his a long time ago, he felt, through the harrowing set of circumstances life had thrown at him over the years. But it was almost as if, by engaging with children in their magical thinking and simple logic, he could recapture a bit of his own innocence, however temporary it may be.
When Mantis began to laugh, so did Pietro, his eyes alight with mirth and happiness. "I know, right?! Adorable!" he said. "Yeah, you think he does? I like to think he does. He is a great little guy." He followed Mantis through the Benatar in search of Quill, and before long, he was chuckling again. "Well, he should not be difficult to find if he has the Zune, yeah? Just listen for the really bad singing."
Pietro was half joking, of course. Quill wasn't that bad. And what he lacked in perfect pitch, he made up for with... enthusiasm. "Although... if he is enjoying himself that much, maybe we should just let him keep it for now. I can always listen to it later," he said with a shrug. After all, it wasn't his Zune, it was everybody's.

Pietro was never one to turn down attention from a pretty girl. It had been a long time since he'd gotten his game on, as it were, and he missed the attention. Because when it came right down to it, Pietro didn't just like the ladies, he also was simply a people person, and enjoyed meeting new people and hearing their stories.
"Well, yes and no," he said. "I am from upstate New York now, that is where I currently live. But... I've only been here for a few months. I am from Sokovia. That's in Eastern Europe." He wasn't sure whether that was exactly a selling point or not in the U.S., but he figured going with the truth couldn't hurt.
"I don't have a problem with calling you cute either, Leigh, but is nice to meet you all the same. Leigh is a nice name," he said with a wide smile. "But you are definitely cute. Do you come here to dance or just hang out with friends?" he asked, wondering what her deal was. Most of all, he hoped she didn't have a boyfriend already...

Pietro turned when he heard a voice near him. Some of the Avengers had gone to the city for a night out, and they'd found themselves in a club. It was... crazy, but in a good way. This was the kind of high-energy scene Pietro could really get used to. He'd wandered off to do this thing socially, which was mostly just winging it with strangers and being friendly, and when the pretty girl started talking to him, he grinned right back. "Yeah, I am," he said over the music. "I live outside the city, but yes... I am new here," he said. "I'm Pietro, and you... are very cute," he said suavely.

Although he'd been tossing and turning within the intensity of his nightmare for some time now, to Pietro, it all seemed to happen so very fast. One moment he was battling some massive, dark enemy, an imposing figure that seemed to be a chimera of different foes and fears that had plagued his mind at one time or another... and then suddenly, he was awake, brought back in a jarring and bright flash of light and confusion.
He blinked several times as he processed where he was and what had happened, rubbing his elbow which he had slammed onto the floor when he fell. "Oh... okay, good," he said, breathing a bit hard as he rubbed his eyes. "Is okay, Mantis, you don't have to take away my nightmares every night. I view it as privilege that you do things like that for me, not a right or some kind of everyday habit.," he said with a smile, running his fingers through his hair.
"No, am not hurt. I banged my elbow, but... is my bad arm. That apart is little bit numb anyways, so is fine," he said with a smirk and a shrug. "Are you sure I didn't interrupt you? You were reading and suddenly thought, oh, Pietro is probably sleeping crappily again? I must have disrupted you somehow." He chuckled, trying to keep the humor even in a serious situation, as was always his way. "Oh no, was I making weird noises in my sleep?" He hoped not, or else he knew Rocket would mercilessly tease him about it later if he'd heard it.
He pushed himself onto his feet and held out a hand to help mantis up. It wasn't like she couldn't get up on his own, but it was more of a gentlemanly gesture simply for the sake of kindness. "Thank you for waking me up. I think I'll get some coffee. Decaf, I know, but if I kindof lie to myself a little I can almost think I am drinking caffeine," he said. Coffee was still a comfort drink, even if the caffeinated kind really made him super jittery.
@fasterthanmydemons continued from here
Bad dreams weren't unusual in the Benatar. The ship's crew were all too familiar with sleepless night, restlesness, and horrible nightmares, memories of the past and anxieties about the future. That was the reason why Mantis tried to comfort the Guardians – she wanted to give them little moments of peace of mind, even if that could only be found in their sleep. And with her gentle touch, she took their pain, whispering their nightmares away.
However, sometimes she forgot to do so, usually after a particularly difficult mission. When many people were injured and Mantis tried to help them all, she would succeed, but she would end up numb, a consequence of the double-edged sword that was her power. When Mantis got lost in all the noise, in all the confusion and pain and trauma that wasn't her own, the Guardians brought her back to herself. She would never stop being grateful for Peter and Gamora, Rocket and Groot, Drax and Pietro.
Pietro...
She knew something was wrong with him as she looked up from the book she was reading. After spending enough time with the Guardians, Mantis could understand their emotions better than those of others – not only because Mantis was an empath, but because she loved her friends. She knew them by heart, their likes and dislikes, their opinions and beliefs, their weaknesses and strengths. Her powers would merely amplify that.
She placed the book aside and left her room to enter his. Mantis called his name twice, and when it didn't work she stepped closer to the bed. In that moment, Pietro's emotions were so intense that Mantis could feel them without a single touch, his fear waxing and waning. She rested her hand on his arm.
"Wake."
Her eyes widened as Pietro fell from his bed, and she gave him a moment to process where he was and who she was before kneeling down on the floor next to him. A part of her wanted to offer her hand and help him stand up, but she did not want to inadvertently pry into his emotions more than she already had.
"No," she replied. "No, you did not wake me, I was reading." A small smile appeared on her face when she saw Mr. Dibbles peering at Pietro, but her attention quickly returned to the speedster. She smiled apologetically when he thanked her for waking him. "I forgot! I forgot to ease the nightmares of all of you tonight. Are you hurt?"
