Happy two months anniversary to Zhuo Yichen & Li Lun sex scene choke episode!

I wish I could say I was exaggerating or joking when I describe episode 23 of Fangs of Fortune as a sex scene between Zhuo Yichen and Li Lun.

And yet. 

No other moment in the series comes close to the sheer intimacy and strange sexual tension of the brutal, unapologetic beating Li Lun puts Zhuo Yichen through.

You’re filled with worry, awe, and guilty excitement as you watch it all unfold; they ensure that hurricane of conflicting emotions sets in motion inside your tight chest because they build it up almost the same way cdramas build up their kissing scenes sex scenes.

To truly appreciate the beauty of episode 23, we need to revisit episodes 6, 16, and 19. Each of these episodes offers an attempt at a fight just the tip and a promise.

"But first, I need to kill you, an even more evil thing."

"I choose for you to die."

Our precious rabid puppy Zhuo Yichen never misses a chance to jump Li Lun like his life depends on it (perhaps it does). He has so much tempter, especially when it comes to Li Lun. Meanwhile, our precious Li Lun meets that aggression with… well? 

In episode 6, Li Lun never truly fights Zhuo Yichen. Instead, he uses Ran Yi as both his blade and his shield before happily escaping, leaving everyone in shambles.

In episode 16, Li Lun mostly dodges Zhuo Yichen’s attacks. First, he stops Zhuo Yichen’s sword with just his fingers, then he seems determined to kill Pei Sijing right on the spot until Zhuo Yichen joins the fight to protect her. Li Lun’s usual cold and calm rage shifts into a cheeky smile, and another flirtatious promise leaps from his tongue.

"Zhuo Yichen, don’t forget. At the final moment, your Cloud Light Sword can kill him."

In episode 19… I have so much to say about this episode, actually, but almost none of it involves Zhuo Yichen and Li Lun. That said, I really enjoy Zhuo Yichen’s decision to stay after casting a glance at Li Lun’s domineering presence.

I just think they’re very pretty, look at them.

Zhu Yan and Zhuo Yichen barely let Li Lun breathe. Attack after attack, and yet none of the blades directed at him hurt as much as the words that pierce his heart. Zhu Yan sets Li Lun on fire again—normal people things—and the last words Li Lun utters before forever losing the human form he developed are a desperate promise and a plea.

"You will kill him one day. Kill Zhao Yuanzhou."

(Quick off topic, I love how troubled Zhuo Yichen looks when he learns about Li Lun literally burning alive, lol) 

All those beautiful moments leading up to episode 23 shows us that Li Lun never wanted to kill or hurt Zhuo Yichen. He wanted Zhuo Yichen. As his companion in revenge against the one person who hurt them both.

Then episode 23 happens.

For happy shippers like myself, it literally starts with Wen Xiao losing her shit over Li Lun possessing Zhuo Yichen, with Li Lun's theme playing during Zhuo Yichen's entrance, and with Tian Jiarui speaking in the voice that Yan An is using for Li Lun. Truly a feast! But that’s not what we’re discussing here.

That damn fight, that damn sex scene.

The only way for me to describe it, it's so personal, and they don’t even know each other long enough to be personal. 

Li Lun promises to Zhuo Yichen while also taunting him, so annoyed by this loud human screaming for Bai Jiu. Makes sure Zhuo Yichen knows it’s him, Li Lun who is s pinning him down into the ground, towering over his body, topping him, with hand on his throat.  

"So noisy. Look closely. I'm not your Xiao Jiu. I'm Li Lun."

What the hell do I know about whether it was a spiteful remark, mirroring Zhuo Yichen’s promises, mocking him, provoking him, or if it was Li Lun’s cold and calm rage speaking, a grievance and pain within him, because this human he had been nothing but kind to dared to help Zhu Yan set him on fire again. Perhaps it was both; perhaps he meant it; perhaps he changed his mind later in the episode and refused to kill unconscious Zhuo Yichen, walking off and letting fate decide whether Zhuo Yichen lives. Perhaps he didn't, simply wanted Zhuo Yichen alive. (*turns him into a demon <3 bc fate can go and fuck itself i guess, Li Lun is fate.*)

The second Truth Eyes hit Zhuo Yichen’s, round, big, and determined eyes, he jumps Li Lun again like a rabid puppy, not a single fuck given about the simplest of truths that if he hurt’s Li Lun, he will hurt Xiao Jiu. 

I cannot lie here. Despite my heart ripping itself apart for Zhuo Yichen, when his dearest friend, his dearest light, his dearest Cloud Light Sword gets broken—over and over again on each rewatch—there’s something so satisfying about watching Li Lun take this fight more seriously than in any of their previous encounters.

It is a gesture of goodwill to keep Zhuo Yichen alive. All those times before. This time? He will show this human his place, and make his pants creamy.

Li Lun not only physically tortures Zhuo Yichen but also psychologically when he breaks Cloud Light Sword in half with needles Bai Jiu carries around (Wouldn’t it be fun if those needles remained from the time when Bai Jiu was supposed to seal Zhu Yan’s touch?)

They're so gorgeous, what the hell?

What a fun human to toy with.

My thoughts get way too explicit after this, and I genuinely can’t find any heterosexual explanation for this.

I see your vision, insane director.

Make sure you kiss your knuckles before you punch me in the face.

I guess Li Lun likes to take Zhuo Yichen from behind.

and watch him struggle at the mercy of his hands as Zhuo Yichen desperately grabs onto them, while Li Lun is unable to resist looking at that unfairly pretty face, luxuriating in every change of emotion he chokes out of him. How beautiful Zhuo Yichen looks then, fighting for his and his dearest friend's life?

What sound does that divine statue make being knocked down, trampled, and trapped in dust? This desperate, fun human, will he get himself up? For his friend that believes in him, trusts him?

"Don't waste your effort. My inner core has been inside Bai Jiu's body for many days. My soul has already solidified, making it much stronger than Bai Jiu's. His soul is nothing but a weak ant compared to mine, which can be easily crushed by me."

I guess Li Lun, then, likes to turn all of Zhuo Yichen to look at his face, again; to have Zhuo Yichen look at him. So Zhuo Yichen comes knowing exactly who fucked him, or whatever Li Lun promised him earlier. 

Listen.

There's a BTS clip of that iconic shot: of Li Lun hiding from those big, round, unyielding, and unafraid eyes by covering Zhuo Yichen's face with his giant hand, eclipsing the light; of Zhuo Yichen biting him, we all know it. And all I can do is wildly gesture at it, at their hands, and rest my case here.

I love Zhuo Yichen and Bai Jiu both biting into the wood to free themselves too much to not mention it again. 

That hopeless wish to save Bai Jiu is the only thing that keeps encouraging Zhuo Yichen to fight against that demonic strength, that so very human body.

"Give Xiao Jiu back to me!"

Humans and ants and divine statues are so amusing when they try to stand up as you crush them.

Letting Zhuo Yichen pierce his heart wasn’t even remotely part of Li Lun’s plans. What’s really fun to me here is disbelief and shock on both their faces. One offended, confused, and "How dare you kick Miette? Jail!"; the other confused, unwavering, hopeful. 

By episode 23, have surely learned two things that cannot be argued with:

If you bite Li Lun, he will bite harder.

Li Lun doesn't want Zhuo Yichen dead.

That punch in the throat made me audibly gasp the first time I watched this episode. Then I held my breath and released a relieved sigh. Li Lun was satisfied with simply toying with that awfully loyal and fascinating human. Perhaps all Li Lun ever wanted from that fight was a chance to touch that divine statue.

Obviously, I must remind you that the sex scene fight between Zhuo Yichen and Li Lun, unfolds as Wen Xiao and Zhao Yuanzhou share their own adorable almost-kiss scene, full of 300 years of yearning. Just saying, FoF is a perfect C-drama formula with a main couple and a second couple.

Cannot wait for insane director to make some bitter and hilarious references, much like how he ridiculed those supporting Gong Shangjue and Shangguan Qian by making a satire on them in Fangs of Fortune. But this time in Veil of Shadows.

GJM kicks his feet and giggles like Wang Xingyue as he makes Yan An and Tian Jiarui hold hands on the set of Veil of Shadows. His ship has sailed.

And so has mine.

Fangs of Fortune ep.11 [rewatch]

I love the little teasing that continues non-stop between ZYZ and ZYC :D That flirty old demon, heh. He's so delighted with these interactions, though))) You can see it on his pleased face.

Calling them all 'friends' and eyeing ZYC specifically to extract some reaction, m-hm. But later Zhuo Yichen confesses to Pei Sijing that he does actually consider Zhao Yuanzhou a friend as well as a foe. The sweet innocent pre-Kunlun days.

2023-2024 cdramas year in review

i'm borrowing this idea from thai bl tumblr, but with less fun categories because i'm tired. i'm including shows from this year and last year since i mainly watched a mixture of the two in 2024.

tagging whoever wants to do it!

overall favorite show (2024): fangs of fortune it's gorgeous, i love the characters, and it's got one of the most shippable poly casts i've seen in basically ever.

overall favorite show (2023): mysterious lotus casebook i actually did watch this one last year and i liked it, but it wasn't until i rewatched it again in 2024 that i lost my mind over it.

favorite character: di feisheng from mysterious lotus casebook my love my darling my heart. i adore him with every fiber of my being. i honestly never really noticed xiao shunyao too much before this but he's sure got my attention now.

favorite character runner up: pei sijing from fangs of fortune sorry, you can't give me a badass kuudere archer and expect me to NOT be absolutely nuts about her. cheng xiao has also improved SO much from her early days acting and i think it's super neat that they incorporated her dancing background into her fight scenes.

favorite ship: dihua from mysterious lotus casebook see above about losing my mind. it's got everything i love in a ship: history, tension, longing, being totally obsessed with one another. i've written so much this year and most of it is for them.

favorite ship runner up: jingxiao from fangs of fortune GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS i love them and they love each other. i love how flirty wx is with psj and how sincere and open psj is with wx.

favorite canon ship: song mo/dou zhao in blossom this is still airing so i hope they don't fuck it up, but it's such a refreshing dynamic. they're really partners, and he's so gone for her.

favorite canon ship runner up: gu jiusi/li yuru in destined i'm not really a fan of straight romance dramas but the strongest arc of this show is undoubtedly the first one, where they unwillingly get married and slowly fall in love. bjt is particularly charming in this role and song yi is lovely per usual.

favorite fl: dou zhao in blossom i love that she's careful and meticulous but not omnipotent. she's working at changing what she can but she's not a miracle worker. she feels warm and human and fallible in the best way. also mzy is gorgeous and i love her, fuck the haters.

favorite fl runner up: xue fangfei in the double she's batshit overpowered and it's still contrived in some instances but wu jinyan sells it enough that i just eat it up hahah.

favorite ml: li lianhua in mysterious lotus casebook his burnt out gifted kid ass is captivating. he has so many complex layers; it's a role that really gives cheng yi a chance to stretch his muscles and i think he did a great job.

favorite ml runner up: pu yiyong in oh no! here comes trouble he's a dumbass delinquent with a hereditary power to see spirits and release them, what's not to love.

favorite female supporting role: yang ying in a journey to love one of the best character arcs i've seen in a long, long time. i love her journey and where she ends up and i hope she gets everything she ever wants. iconic role for helan dou imo.

favorite female supporting role runner up: feng baobao in am nobody she doesn't understand human interaction and she loves knives and is good at them. she was made for me.

favorite male supporting role: yu shishan in journey to love breakout role for fang yilun, suave playboy with a heart of gold, faithful brother in arms. i adore him.

favorite male supporting role runner up: wang ye in i am nobody lazy, lowkey, and the best in the world. a good look for hmh also.

favorite antagonist: shen yurong from the double what a thoroughly unhinged man. i particularly loved the middle section of the show and the back and forth between him and xff. i wanted him to take a different path, but he couldn't.

favorite antagonist runner up: li lun from fangs of fortune oh my beautiful, bitter, lovelorn tree demon. he's like catnip for me.

favorite antagonist honorable mention: gong shangjue from my journey to you so intense, so brooding, so murderous.

bonus 2023 thai show section

favorite overall show: moonlight chicken i just really loved this show. i like both gemfourth and earthmix and while i did not enjoy the bit of firstkhao pandering at the end, i thought it was a generally thoughtful exploration of human foibles.

favorite cast: my school president they're adorable and i love them. this is overall such a fun, feel good show with great music. tinngun are wonderful and so are the secondary couples. special shoutout to babygirl por's outfits.

most ridiculous sex scene: bed friend you know the one.

biggest disappointment: only friends i still haven't finished it. i'm just not invested in anything or anyone. i think part of it is that i don't really love the cast, out side of neo and mark. i do like first and khao but not really together, sadly.

Green is not your color

It has been five months since the battle with Wen Zongyu concluded. The emperor has disbanded the Chongwu camp and let the Demon Hunting Bureau take over the concerns with demons. The city of Tiandu is once again at peace. The only person who is not in peace is Zhuo Yichen.

"Pacing back and forth will not resolve your problem, Xiao Zhuo. You have been restless since Zhao Yuanzhou left with Li Lun," Wen Xiao said, not taking her eyes off the book she is reading.

The great demon Zhao Yuanzhou left Tiandu to go back to the Wilderness with Li Lun. He informed Zhuo Yichen that they just need to fix something, and then he will come back. That was five months ago, and Zhuo Yichen can't help but worry. He knows that Yuanzhou can defend himself, but he does not trust Li Lun.

"I don't trust that demon at all! All of a sudden he wanted to help after trying many times to kill Zhao Yuanzhou. Are you not worried at all?" Zhuo Yichen asks the Baize goddess. Wen Xiao exhaled deeply and looked at Yichen.

"Zhao Yuanzhou can take on Li Lun. Besides, didn't he promise you that he will come back? Don't you trust him?"

"I trust him, but when will he come back? 500 years from now?" Yichen sighed deeply and took a seat on the table near Wen Xiao.

Wen Xiao understood Zhuo Yichen's dilemma. He is scared to lose Zhao Yuanzhou. He may not verbally say it, but his actions say it all. She doesn't quite understand why her childhood friend refuses to admit his feelings to the great demon. It is evident that their feelings are mutual.

"You can go to the wilderness if you want, Xiao Zhuo. You know where Li Lun also resides. I'm sure they are just around there."

"He can stay wherever he is right now if he does not come back this month. I will personally make sure he cannot enter the building." Zhuo Yichen walks away from the Archives and leaves a chuckling Wen Xiao behind.

Another month passed and still no signs of the great demon. Zhuo Yichen already informed every guard to never let Zhao Yuanzhou enter the building. He even asked Ying Lei for a spell to barricade the Demon Hunting Bureau. Wen Xiao and Pei Sijing just laugh at their commander's actions.

Unbeknownst to Zhuo Yichen, Wen Xiao keeps tabs with the great demon through Li Lun. Li Lun sends messages using his pagoda leaf to the Baize goddess. Zhao Yuanzhou knew what was happening in the Demon Hunting Bureau, especially concerning Zhuo Yichen.

"Don't you think it's wise to let him know that you are in touch with Zhao Yuanzhou? He is going crazy. I don't think he will hesitate now to kill that demon." Wen Xiao laughs at Pei Sijing's comment. The goddess shakes her head.

"Zhao Yuanzhou will come back tomorrow. Let us see what will happen then."

Before the sun even rises the next day, Zhuo Yichen is already prepared for the day. His anxiousness for the comeback of the ape demon is going nowhere. He has decided to personally drag the demon back himself. Zhuo Yichen is also a demon, and he can fight Li Lun if he ever decides to stop him.

"Xiao Zhuo daren, the carriage is waiting outside." Yichen nodded at the attendant and walked his way to the huge doors of the bureau. Unaware that the demon he wishes to drag is already outside the barrier of the building.

"He really did it," Zhao Yuanzhou said while Li Lun crossed his arms on his chest as they looked at the barrier that surrounds the Demon Hunting Bureau.

"Why did you like that man again?" Li Lun asked, which earned a glare from the ape demon.

"Xiao Zhuo does not make such decisions unless I piss him off big time," Zhao Yuanzhou exhaled deeply. He is now nervous to see the demon hunter turned demon.

"Be ready for a sword in your chest then," Li Lun remarked while he worked on breaking the barrier. In an instant, the barrier opened, which alarmed the rest of the Demon Hunting Bureau members, including Zhuo Yichen.

All the members, including the main group, run towards the doors of the building; they await for the intruders to enter as they prepare for the counterattack. Zhuo Yichen, who was in the middle of the form, unsheathes his Cloud Light sword.

The two great demons enter the building casually while the Demon Hunting Bureau stands down. They all exhaled in relief, knowing it was just Zhao Yuanzhou and Li Lun. What happened next shocked them all.

Zhuo Yichen saw the two demons enter the building, which already made his blood boil in anger. He runs towards the two demons, specifically Zhao Yuanzhou, and attacks him. Good thing the ape demon already expected this attack and defended himself by twisting Yichen's arm around his back.

"Let me explain, Xiao Zhuo," Yuanzhou whispered in Yichen's ear, which angered the latter more. Zhuo Yichen attacks are sloppy, which Zhao Yuanzhou noticed. He is too driven by his emotions to think clearly of his next moves. What he cares about is to pierce the great demon with his sword.

"Listen to me, Zhuo Yichen!" Zhao Yuanzhou sternly said, but Yichen keeps on attacking him.

The fight, or rather Yichen's tantrum, lasted for another few minutes before Yuanzhou pierced himself with the Cloud Light sword. Zhuo Yichen looks at him with tears brimming in his eyes. Yuanzhou's heart breaks seeing him shed tears for him yet again.

"Can we now talk?"

Zhuo Yichen pulls the sword from Yuanzhou's chest and walks away. His tears streaming down his face as he headed back to his quarters. His heart aches seeing them together while he suffers being away from the great demon. He wanted to hurt him so badly, which is why he attacked him.

"That was intense, I must say," Li Lun commented, showing up from the corner. Zhao Yuanzhou checked his surroundings and saw them empty.

"The goddess asked them to leave. They also left so you two can talk," Li Lun added.

"Now, I have to tame one furious baby dragon."

Zhao Yuanzhou knows Zhuo Yichen went back to his quarters. One attendant informed him that the commander asked for tea to be delivered in his room. Before he can fully enter, Zhuo Yichen throws a cup of tea at him, which Yuanzhou was able to dodge.

"Leave."

"You already thrown quite a tantrum back there, Xiao Zhuo. Don't you think I deserve to be heard now? I promised I would come back, and I did," Zhao Yuanzhou calmly said as he sat in front of Zhuo Yichen. He pours himself a cup of tea as well while Yichen looks the other way.

"I had to help Li Lun with his cultivation since he almost died battling Wen Zongyu. His cultivation was disrupted when he joined the fight."

Zhao Yuanzhou started to explain, but Zhuo Yichen already hates what he is hearing. His mind is going haywire thinking about the possible ways to help a demon cultivate. What the two had done to help Li Lun speed up the cultivation. His hold on the cup tightens, which shatters it in a minute. Blood started oozing out of his hand because of the cut, but Yichen was not bothered by it. His jealousy is getting the best of him right now.

Zhao Yuanzhou immediately takes his hand to heal it, but Yichen pulls away. Zhuo Yichen heals himself and pours himself another cup of tea. Yuanzhou finally realizes what his Xiao Zhuo might be thinking.

"We did not do anything if that is what you are thinking. I swear on my life that I simply help him or rather teach him ways to cultivate faster. You are the only person I would dual cultivate with. No one else."

Zhuo Yichen finally looks at Zhao Yuanzhou. The great demon can see the redness of Yichen's ear, which made him smile. Yuanzhou stands up and sits behind Zhuo Yichen, then pulls the young demon to lean on his chest. Yichen is now sitting on Yuanzhou's lap.

"Green does not suit you, Yichen. I like the color blue more." Yuanzhou teases his jealous baby dragon. Yichen slaps his hand on his waist as a response.

"You have been with Li Lun for months. Don't blame me for thinking that you... whatever that is. You were friends before we did. You know each other so much that you even used it against each other before." Zhuo Yichen hates to admit that he is jealous every time he sees them together. He knew that the two demons knew each other well. He cannot compete with Li Lun on how much he knows of Zhao Yuanzhou.

But you don't need to do anything with a demon's body. It dissolves immediately. Regardless of power. The weak deceiving demon, Ran Yin, Fei, Li Lun, Zhu Yan, all of them dissolve into...idk. Energy. Glitter.

F - Fear he hadn’t dared to fully let himself feel was washing out of his body and suddenly his sluggish qi circulated with ease.

O - Or perhaps correct a disbalance? Had he still not appreciated Ying Lei enough, while they had lived as neighbours in Zhu Yan's backyard?

R - Ridiculous. Zhu Yan would have teased him for days and even Wen Xiao wouldn’t have been able to help herself had she been told of this.

T - Time to stop hiding from the knowledge that was carried by those two unsuspecting syllables.

U - [cheating and going by phonetics] You suffered tremendous losses and the only thing tying you to the world is something that will take hundreds if not thousands of years to recover.

N - Nothing like the way Pei Sijing had described the puppet’s skin and Zhuo Yichen wished she could have met this reincarnation of her didi.

E - Each time he ate again, it was like fireworks were set off on his tongue and he felt he understood Ying Lei’s passion for creating delicious meals a little better, understood why he felt he had to leave the mountain to pursue it.

And now to the juicier stuff:

H - He simply wrapped his arm securely around his waist, accepting the weight and trying not to think about the way it sent damning heat south to have this qianbei in his arms.

I - [The righteous student council president.] I guess you’re used to having something hard up your arse.

S - So well prepared for getting debauched.

T - The first time it happened, Yichen wasn’t even sure what the guy’s name was.

O - On one hand, Yichen understood a little better why the others had been worried about a fight between them. On the other hand, he wondered a little guiltily whether he might be able to convince Zhu Yan to try fucking him up against a wall.

R - Remind me, why did you agree to letting him be charged for crimes he didn’t commit?

Y - Yichen distantly noted how different an effect her praise had on him, compared to that of last night’s Yuanzhou, which had set him alight.

I skipped the worst of the dirty talk (boy, Zhu Yan has a filthy mouth) so it's not quite as bad :D

Just finished ep 19 of Fangs of Fortune. So much happened!!!

Zhao Yuan Zhou started the episode in a cage. Under threat, he finally said something nice about everyone. Zhuo Yi Chen once again decided to fight by his side. Then Wen Xiao saved the day but it wasn't really a happy occasion. Li Lun's story is too sad for anyone to celebrate his death. And Zhao Yuan Zhou was hurting too much. If you've accidentally caused your loved one's suffering and forced seclusion & he turned evil... yeah that's hard to grapple with. But I love that we get complex characters, everyone has more to their story than meets the eye.

Then we finally learned what was up with Pei Sijing & that was fun. But the reveal of who was behind the mask though!!! And Little Bunny did have a secret after all... of course.

Unrelated thought I had: The battle songs always hit! I should edit all of the cool fighting scenes together. But idk if that's a good idea. If I leave the soundtrack as it is, it'll be like bits and pieces of the same two songs over and over? If not, I don't think it'll be as cool without the sword sounds etc.

Maybe, It’s not just for make an record or history. It’s all about being a beneficial person for others.

This day I started my journey for being a storyteller and a motivator. 

Kisah ini bermula dari minggu lalu. Setelah menyelesaikan drama musikal dari pementasan ujian praktek bahasa Inggris, aku sedang berselancar di dunia maya. Membuat cerita di kanal Instagram tentang drama musikal hari Kamis. Sehingga seorang kakak kelas yang baik menghubungiku, mbak Nayla namanya. Beliau mengabari aku tentang tawaran mengisi seminar yang seharusnya diisi oleh seorang penulis cilik - usia SMA atau yang dibawahnya.

Ragu aku atas tawaran tersebut. Dikarenakan skill menulisku yang tidaklah begitu cakap layaknya penulis lainnya yang aku ketahui. Namun, Mbak Nayla menyemangatiku dan menyuruhku bercerita tentang alur kepenulisanku. Menurutnya, aku sudah cukup baik untuk berbagi cerita seperti pada tawarannya tersebut. Lantas, aku menyemangati diriku sendiri untuk mengambil kesempatan itu.

Aku hubungi mbak Sije. Seorang yang mencari penulis cilik sebagai pembicara tersebut dan bercerita tentang alur kepenulisan saya. Kami pun deal untuk  bekerja sama dan melanjurkan pembicaraan di grup WhatsApp. 

Lambat laun segala proses berjalan. Mulai dari persetujuan konsep hingga akhirnya gladi bersih. Dibantu Zhahira juga aku membuat konsep dan powerpoint. 

Sebagai seorang yang pertama kali penjadi pembicara seminar, aku gugup. Aku terus berusaha dan berdoa untuk memberikan performa yang terbaik. Aku juga menyiapkan bungkusan kecil.

Aku datang kesana setengah jam sebelum acara terjadwal. Disana aku bertemu teman-teman yang ramah, baik, dan antusias. Hebat sekali mereka. Kegiatan hari ini berjalan lancar. Alhamdulillah.

Fangs of Fortune (ep. 33 - ep. 34)

Okay, I might need therapy after this show now, but oh boy, did they end on a hopeful note (I mean that sweet special episode that made EVERYTHING better). I almost don't want to recount the torment that was the last few episodes, but it was pretty. And all of them are incredibly beautiful sufferers D:

Li Lun had a spectacular, albeit short, redemption arc, sacrificing himself both for Zhuo Yichen and, most importantly, Zhao Yuanzhou. LL and ZYZ are especially tragic if you come to think of it. They've both lived 30,000+ years, can you imagine the amount of cycles their relationship went through? They could have been enemies just out of boredom, and then lovers again, and then friends, and then whatever. They both don't pose as very sociable beings, so I imagine having each other in their lives was pretty important. Thus, losing the other one was pretty much unbearable. It's akin to losing a part of yourself, of your body and soul (once again, the TORMENT of Li Lun dying and what ZYZ was going through was palpable).

"I can't stand seeing him so useless."

And that moment when Zhao Yuanzhou needed to kill the phoenix but he couldn't utter the goddamn spell because Zhuo Yichen was in there, too, and he could have been killed. Gosh, give that old demon a break, hasn't he suffered enough already? (Mr.Guo says: nope, not nearly). But that handshake was hotter than a kiss, I swear :)

That moment when Zhao Yuanzhou was going to his death, leaving Wen Xiao behind and breaking A LOT at the passageway, realizing he wouldn't be able to keep any of his promises - to her and to him, that was almost worse than the death itself. Hou Minghao played it so well it physically hurt to see him like that.

Don't get me even started about Bai Jiu and how he held onto Zhuo Yichen's hair bells for strength and courage D: In the end, he was the one who saved everyone. A baby boy who was scared of everything.

And what a day it was for Wen Xiao to lose both her stepfather and her loved one. Zhao Yuanzhou did sacrifice him for her (otherwise she would have done it as a goddess for all those people), but a small evil voice in my head (probably Li Lun's XD) whispered that it's just one city, how many ppl could the Chongwu Camp have infected? Screw the city, save Zhao Yuanzhou XD Well, I'm obviously biased, so, yeah. One Great Demon saved the day, finally realizing his deathwish, which was no longer there.

Zhao Yuanzhou and Zhuo Yichen during the killing - it was just pure heartbreak. ZY manned up (if it's even applicable here) and did the deed himself, not waiting for ZYZ to go full-on Ying Long on him. Instant depression for the whole Demon Hunting Bureau, whoever was left there still. But kudos to our boy for saving a part of Zhao Yuanzhou's soul - just like Bing Yi did. And not only that, he went looking for it. I have no idea what you could do with a particle like that (can you grow him back? I'd like to think so, although Ying Long was kinda stuck and didn't seem too happy, hmm).

Also, the last person Zhao Yuanzhou saw was Zhuo Yichen D;

But still, that ending in the special was hopeful. Instantly made everything somehow less dreary and lonely. Zhuo Yichen's character growth was IMMENSE. Our boy went from hating demons who killed his family, then getting to know so many of them, and one especially well, and even to becoming one himself. And in the end, he refused to give up on Zhao Yuanzhou, saying he'd be guilty for the rest of his life if he didn't find him. Well, maybe that, but also because of their love, which was HUGE.

I like how the show explored different types of love - friendly, sisterly, brotherly, m/m, f/f, and everything in between. Unrequited love, platonic love, the whatever love - it's all been there. Pei Sijing's face said a lot when Wen Xiao told them she was also leaving - to stay in the Wilderness. It's not-really-funny how without Zhao Yuanzhou their whole team broke apart (well, some died, but each of them went their separate ways). I kind of hopefully imagine that if he came back, he'd probably want to spend a small eternity with Zhuo Yichen or Wen Xiao (or more likely both) and that could be a whole new adventure for them.

I sacrificed my night's sleep for this, no regrets whatsoever XD Not nearly enough kittens in the world to heal after this, though. But the show is so-so good.

Meh, he's done this and My Journey to You (which I only got a few eps into before getting distracted) and two movies that I've not seen. So, no idea why he seems familiar.

Though for some reason (his styling maybe - with the braids and the hint of moustache?) he is giving me Nie Mingjue vibes...

Ahahahaaaa they knew in advance that Zhu Yin was skanky!! 😁

Gotta say (I have mentioned it before) I am loving the narrative device they keep using in this show where they flash back to a previous scene and show more of it/detail that we didn't get shown the first time around that completely reframes the current scene and shows that they were expecting this and had stuff planned in advance...

But wherrrre is my boy Bai Jui during all this? Ying Lei asked this earlier and Zhuo Yichen said he should be with Pei Sijing... I took that at the time to mean they still had no idea that Sijing is the spy and thought he was somewhere safe with her... but could it mean that they do know/suspect and they maybe sent Bai Jiu after her, knowing she would spot him and (trusting she wouldn't actually hurt or kill him - which is a big risk tbh?) would have to stay and guard him, thus keeping Bai Jiu away from the fight *and* taking Sijing out of the fight?

Aiya... Ying Lei living up to his potential as a mountain god...

Uhoh, dragon boy is fighting back with his weather-controlling powers.

And Li Lun is just standing there not doing shit. 😂 Like... dude... they are all occupied with either holding the area or spell-casting inside it. You could just walk up and stab em and they wouldn't be able to do much to fight you off...

Oh shit no... dragon dude is not controlling the weather... he's making it night time rather than day...

Welp Zhu Yan pulling in all the malicious qi has at least dealt with the creatures outside the gate... but on the other hand you've now got a MUCH bigger problem!!

So the Baize token was what was shackling Li Lun and that's why he wanted it broken... bullshit about breaking the barrier between the wasteland and the mortal world so demons could be free was just the lie he sold Zhu Yin to get him on board (just like the lie he sold Qing Geng - this is his modus operandi)

God this is glorious imagery...

Goddamit though, Zhu Yan has absorbed all the malicious qi and very clearly lost control but all he does for the longest time is just hover there... he doesn't immediately go on an indiscriminate rampage. I can only imagine him spending all that time hovering just... trying to cling to control...?

And the first person he *does* go for is Zhu Yin, who betrayed him and his friends.

Ugh the dismissive ease with which he shrugs off the mountain god's power...

Oh man, the slow deliberate malice in the way he moves...

I shouldn't be finding this expression hot AF, right?

OMG look at how distressed he is - even after everything Li Lun has done - at seeing his friend be sealed...

So... it was *again* a blood moon that caused Zhu Yan to kill Zhao Wan'er? But... where did the blood moon suddenly come from? Or did it appear *because* Zhu Yan started absorbing malicious qi?

The *sound* in this scene... no music at all... just silence and the over-loud, almost distorted-sounding sounds - slosh of the water from Wan'er's footsteps, her breathing, the washing of the waves....

So. Fucking. Atmospheric.

But wait, in this memory he attacks Wen Xiao and (it looks like?) ?breaks her neck? (Or does he just knock her unconscious?) That didn't happen though in the other depictions we've seen of this scene? Is this memory faked/altered? In fact... how the fuck can Li Lun be showing her a "memory" of shit that went down after he was sealed? He wasn't there to see any of this? I call bullshit! Unless... he somehow stole this memory from Zhu Yan?

Oh SHIT is the blood moon where he killed Wan'er the same one in which he attacked Demon Hunting Bureau?!!

This song by Hou Minghao is so melancholy and haunting... and even more playing over this scene...

Also wtf happened to her boss who was outside the gate. Why has he not gotten involved in the latest shenanigans... he wants Zhu Yan's core still, doesn't he?

Clausewtiz's On War was first translated into Chinese at the tail end of the Qing Dynasty, though that was primarily for inner military circles and saw little spread. It got a much bigger release during World War One in 1915, not shocking given Germany's role in said conflict and the now-Republican China's climate of intellectual curiosity (and domestic inferiority). Both of these translations were created from Japanese publications of the text by Chinese military circles, and the latter's success inspired several different editions. Most successful was the "translation" by military theorist Huang Huanwen in iirc the 1930's, which was highly abridged and had a lot of the author's own commentary. This absolutely was the "blog post" version of this era.

Sadly, I don't think that is the version Mao read; Lenin was a huge fan of Clausewitz and so these circles actively discussed appropriate translations, and Marxists are if anything very much not afraid of a wordy text, so he wanted something more robust. He possibly had read parts of it earlier than this (we have references to it in letters), but he certainly read it during the "Yan'an period" after the Long March - when he coincidentally was in the middle of one of his fitful attempts at keeping a reading diary! He began reading it on March 18th, 1938, (probably) finished it in April, and even organized a book club study circle to discuss the text with fellow cadre leaders. Hilariously, he took a "break" during his reading of On War to read, in ~3 days, the 240-page book "Logic and Logic Theory" by Pan Xinnian, which comparatively he breezed through. Almost certainly because as a foreign work On War was a bit of a slog in Chinese, but still incredibly amusing to me.

His version (as mentioned in the above source) was likely a 1934 translation from Shanghai academic Liu Joshui, and additionally (source) he and his cadre circle utilized translation & commentary on the text by relative-famous Marxist professor He Sijing, who studied in Germany and utilized the original text to counter the often-slapdash derived-from-Japanese/French/etc versions that proliferated at this time.

To earn the eternal ire of Dril Tweets, you alas gotta hand it to Mao - he was true-blue academic and read the fucking sources.
