Been thinking how Soren is just a less angsty and emo, golden retriever version of Zuko.

Like we know Avatar the Last Airbender and The Dragon Prince have the same creators but their parallels are very similar

They both had their mother leave when they where younger

They both have a gifted younger sibling (Azula and Claudia) who is favoured by their father (Ozai and Viren)

Both their Dads are a type of lord

They both were manipulated by their fathers into doing some thing wrong in the hopes of earning their fathers love

Both deal with internal conflict about what is right and wrong

Both of them go through a redemption arc that leads them to join the hero’s in the third season

I think the difference lies in the fact that Soren’s Dad cared for him in someway and Soren once had a good relationship with his sister while Zukos Dad never cared and was a horrible abusive human being and Zuko and his sister don’t get along.

Like they are very very different characters that just so happen to share very similar Daddy Issues that have a favoured gifted golden child younger sibling, trying to earn your fathers affection type of trauma

Someone called Ozai "temper tantrum man", and I was going to comment on that with some sort of "Yes, but"...but then I realized that there is no "yes" to that.

He's not a tantrum person.

He has a temper, yes, but the guy doesn't freak out. Ever. Not even once. And it's a trait I hadn't considered about him, but it's so terrifyingly brilliant.

-Zuko speaks out. He just drags him off to the disciplinary Agni-Kai

-Zuko tells him Azula lied and the Avatar's alive. He just snarls at Zuko and tells him to get out, then starts goading the kid to attack him with swords while he doesn't have his own firebending

-Aang blows up his airship, and he just flies down and starts gloating about how favored he is by the universe

-Aang unlocks the Avatar State and grabs Ozai's beard, and Ozai counterattacks in the blink of an eye

-Aang nearly kills him and Ozai scoffs about how Aang is weak

-Aang takes his bending and Ozai throws punches until he realizes he's exhausted

-A bunch of teenagers start making fun of him and Ozai (still exhausted) pathetically protests before falling over

-Zuko comes to see him in jail and Ozai hits him with snark

The writing on that man is insane when you think about how cold he is.

you ever sit and think about how both times katara compared her parents to aang, he was never around to hear it?

meaning he has no idea the role he occupies in her headspace when they’re not together? 😫

and that all her “mothering” actions to him were really just a coverup to hide the fact that she was actually scared to lose him like she lost her parents? (to avoid confusion, i’m referring to hakoda leaving her behind as a loss, i’m not saying he died obviously)

and that katara’s belief in aang to save the world, doesn’t just come from her belief in the avatar, but her own selfish need to be with aang specifically?? and how she affirms this every time he returns from some dangerous battle or comes back to save her throughout the series?

and how their relationship SIGNIFICANTLY progresses romantically, after she 1) confronts hakoda and 2) faces her mother’s kiIIer??

1. The Awakening

Katara: I know the world needs him, but doesn't he know how much we need him, too? How can he just leave us behind?

Hakoda: You're talking about me too, aren't you?

katara goes on this whole rant about aang leaving her behind, and it takes hakoda like 2 seconds to realize that she’s talking about HIM TOO. (not just him, but him AND aang btw)

after this, we get some of the most significant unambiguous kataang moments in the show, more than we ever did in the first 2 seasons combined. which means, she’s probably been carrying around this feeling way longer than the episode suggests. it could also mean that katara has simply never felt abandoned by aang until that very moment, which would make sense too, because he never did!

2. The Southern Raiders

Katara: Remember, back in Ba Sing Se. And you turned around and betrayed me, betrayed all of us!

Katara: Hmm, maybe you could reconquer Ba Sing Se in the name of the Earth King. Or, I know! You could bring my mother back!

then, she (more implicitly) compares aang dying in ba sing se to losing her mother which on first watch, are really not comparable at all (especially the way she says it) and seems like she just trying to find any reason to be mad at this person.

EXCEPT, the more the episode progresses, we get to see even more and more parallels between kya and aang. so yeah, of course, katara connects what happened in ba sing se to the day her mother died...

obviously these 2 moments are important for katara and her individual arc, but I just think it’s interesting how the moments we see of her lashing out talking to/about her parents are somehow connected to aang dying, and how their relationship evolves once she gets closure from those moments of her childhood.

Dragon AU Headcanon

It's Phoenix Clan tradition to name children after a male ancestor in hopes they'll become great dragon hunters. This is why Ozai still names Azula after his father despite trying to separate himself from both Azulon and the Phoenix Clan. Maybe it was out of irony or Ozai was still more ingrained than he thought. He never truly figured that out.

Ozai wished he had enough courage to break the tradition and name Azula after his late mother, but what's done is done.

This is also why Ozai never calls Azula by her full name. It's always Dear or Blueberry or even Lala but never Azula.
