L6 Practical project: Research Log- 1

After creating immersive installations, I was heavily inspired by the narrative project in the first year where we had to mix visuals with sound I found it helpful to work with a given sound brief as it gave me a stimulus/ main objective to work from and to turn into something visually and audibly pleasing which also corresponds to past projection into immersive cinema, immersive installation and film making. My starting point to form a brief to essentially guide me through the creative process and allow me to have a clear a vision of what I wanted to make. 

After researching competition briefs, I found some examples on the website creative conscience and immediately drew towards the brief that centred on the topic, Equality. The reason being, I felt a personal connection with the subject matter as I wanted to touch on topics of xenophobia and racism and as being a woman of colour, I thought it would be interesting to a wider audience understanding on this topic as well as my own input. I then investigated how sound compliments different genres.

 A practitioner that fits into this area is actor and poet Dacre Montgomery, whose podcast, DKMH (accessed on Spotify) incorporates classical music composures that perfectly compliment his self-produced poetry which he narrates himself. This was heavily influenced as he combines to different forms of art and invokes an emotional response from the audience to try and get them to feel and envision his thoughts and feelings he expresses in his poems through the vibe and tune of the music. As a creative writer, I enjoy writing poetry and short stories and see the appeal Montgomery creates with his work which shows he understands not only his own style but his audience too which is something I look forward into passing it on in my own project. I also researched further into the sound and visuals of music videos.

 I was receptive to Beyoncé’s music video for her song ‘Formation’, directed by Grammy award winner, Melina Matsoukas. In the video, in nods towards themes of xenophobia, racism, prejudice and natural disasters (Hurricane Katrina). ‘Matsoukas’s brand of provocation instead comes from a unique, inherently multicultural point of view that flips existing narratives to normalize the inclusion of women and people of colour in spaces where they previously were not represented.’ (Melina Matsoukas  Biography-Pretty Bird: http://prettybird.co/us/talent/creatives/melina-matsoukas/biography/).  

My research also led me to look at campaigns in fashion and marketing. ‘In 2001 Diesel launched a $15 million print campaign featuring a fictitious newspaper, The Daily African. Black models in Diesel jeans lounged in limos or lay across mahogany desks under headlines imagining Africa's supremacy as a world power ("African Expedition to Explore Unknown Europe by Foot"). It won that year's Grand Prix at the International Advertising Festival in Cannes.’ (Forbes https://www.forbes.com/pictures/mlf45jkmk/the-daily-african/#71c82e297949) I found it interesting how people of colour were addressed in a positive light and featured in a highbrow fashion company when segregation was in motion less than 40 years ago. It was a pinnacle moment in the brands' history and a real standout campaign that shed light on people of colour in a positive way which had previously been expressed quite negatively.
