Creative Space 8
Tumblr media
Seasonal art exhibitions are not limited to art galleries but can also be found in department stores and retail complexes in Japan, where they are often accompanied by gift shops featuring the work of the showcased artists. One such example is Shibuya Hikarie, a retail complex in Tokyo that has dedicated its 8th floor as a creative events space and shared workspace for creatives.
On this floor, visitors can also find a small museum called d47, which is run by the publication "design travel" a travel and lifestyle guide that features “Kanagawa” one of Japan's 47 prefectures in each issue. The exhibitions held at d47 are tied to the featured prefecture in the current issue, and visitors can purchase unique products and produce from that prefecture at the adjacent gift shop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These booths are typically found at every exhibition space across Japan, there are abundance of well-designed catalogues and brochures that cross-promote other art-related events.  the brochures are printed on various paper stocks as someone who appreciates good design I cannot help but collect them all. I am reminded of my college days seeing all those Avant card free postcards. While they may be nothing more than ads on paper.

Took a class comparing yeasts for meads aged 7+ years
This past week I had the opportunity to take a really interesting class. The teacher has decades of experience brewing beer, wine, and mead and in 2017, started two batches of mead but, before pitching the yeast, they were separated into several different containers so he could experiment with different kinds of yeasts. He'd previously tasted them after 1 year, 2, 5, and now the bottles were 7 years old.
The first was a cherry mead (mostly red cherry juice, but some pitted black cherries as well). This was subdivided into 5 batches, each pitched with a different Lalvin brand of yeast to see how each changed the flavor profile and how each aged.
I didn't have a pen handy so I couldn't take notes, but here's what I remember
71B - This one fermented pretty smoothly, leaving quite a bit of cherry flavor. The alcohol was moderately noticeable but not unpleasant.
D47 - This one was a bit smoother than the 71B, still leaving a good amount of cherry.
EC-1118 - This one was by far the least favorite. Even after 7 years, it still tasted quite hot. The cherry flavor was present, but largely overshadowed by the alcohol.
KI-VIII6 - This one was just unexciting. The cherry flavor was diminished, but nothing interesting really took its place. This just ended up tasting meh.
Rhone 2056 - This yeast is not easily available to consumers as it has to be purchased in 1/2 kilo blocks. However, it was the favorite of the ones sampled. It finished extremely smooth. The cherry flavor was almost gone, but it had an excellent satin feel to it.
The second batch was a similar experiment, but with a traditional mead. However, this time, he used Wyeast ale yeasts. I'm not as familiar with these, so the names didn't stick as well. Ultimately, I didn't much like any of them, but the teacher indicated that the London was his favorite and I recall finding it the least offensive.
Overall, it was a really fun class and I'm hoping to start a similar experiment in the near future.

Hello! Can I request D47. Letter with Kaz Brekker? 😘
Prompt: D47. Letter
Tumblr media
Kaz had gone missing.
It wasn’t unheard of, your boss was often going on his “walks” and just happened to come back with a DeKappel, but you having new intel that should be told to him as quickly as possible, him being absent was particularly frustrating.
Jesper had seen him standing by the bar, looking even angrier as he usually looked like when Jesper was going to the kitchen. When Jesper had greeted him, Kaz had told him to shut up, and after Jesper came out of the kitchen with a cup of coffee, Kaz had disappeared into thin air and had been away from the Slat since. You had checked all the usual places he was in. The Crow Club, the usual places around the Barrel, the roof, the harbor and no sign of him anywhere. You even asked from the harbor if there was a chance he had gone to the Black Veil Island for some reason, but no one could confirm they had seen him rent a boat there. You had also asked the barkeeper Joris about him, but he had just shrugged, telling you he hadn't seen him either even though he was scheduled to come meet his new employee. The poor boy had sat in the backroom for over two hours, sweating so much because of being nervous that Joris had thought he could even melt.
All of it was making you pace around the house. Your fellow Crows were telling you to calm down, but you just couldn’t, the opportunity you had was a golden bullseye, Kaz would be incredibly angry if he found out too late.
You had followed that old rich fool Van Benschoten for months, just waiting for him to slip, to lose his guard, to show you how to get into his manor’s cellar. The man was an idiot in many ways, but he had had his wits present when he had chosen his security architect. It had been incredibly hard to find out anything about it, because he kept changing it up every few days, and tomorrow could be too late for this information.
When you couldn’t take it anymore, you decided to climb into Kaz’s office to wait for him there, to make sure he wouldn’t be able to slip by your attention. You knew he didn’t like you or Inej going there without him being present, but if you happened to fall asleep, Kaz would wake you up once he came back.
“Kaz?” you called out from the window just in case, even though you didn’t expect to get an answer. And you didn’t. You slid into his dark office before you lit the oil lamp and took a seat across from his desk. You stared at the door for a while, but then turned your head to his desk. Maps, a blueprint, one of his ledgers, and… in the corner of your eye on the floor was a crumpled paper.
Your name was written on it.
You swallowed, looking around as if to make sure no one sees you looking at it, that Kaz wasn’t hiding somewhere observing what you do when you see it. And you knew you shouldn’t snoop. It was nothing, probably. Likely. But what would Kaz write about you, that got him so worked up that he’d crumple it up, toss it aside and march out of the Slat in a burst of anger?
But still, you found yourself picking it up from the floor and carefully straightening it. It was clear Kaz had squeezed it into a ball before throwing it aside.
Was it the reason why Kaz had been angrier this morning, barking at Jesper like that?
You just couldn’t help yourself, just a few words, you promised to yourself. You just want to know what it's about, if it was something important. Maybe something to do with one of the upcoming jobs.
The ink had dried, but it had still been wet when Kaz had crumpled it up. Most of the letters had blurred, but you were able to distinguish what one paragraph said despite it. You took in a deep breath and began reading.
“I wanted to tell you yesterday. But I didn’t. I couldn’t. What use would it be, why would you want me? I’m broken, I wouldn’t even be able to hold your hand, I wouldn’t be able to tell you my feelings, you’d always have to guess and speculate. It wouldn’t be fair to you. Ghezen, these times I wish I would be able to be like others, I—”
The rest of it was too smudged to read, and you lowered the letter slightly, standing up and starting to pace. Your heart was thumping as you stared at the words, they didn’t sound like Kaz at all, and you doubted your eyesight for a moment, wondering if it was someone else’s handwriting instead.
And your name in that kind of letter… did it mean Kaz had feelings for you? After all this time of you believing he had feelings for Inej?
Then it hit you, and your shoulders slumped. He was sketching a letter for Inej, and had accidentally written your name into it. You had seen them together, they had their moments, their own language, heads pressed together in the corner as they shared secrets. It couldn’t be you. Or maybe Kaz had thought about asking for your opinion about the letter draft, a bizarre idea, which is why it had your name.
Then, you suddenly heard the key turning in the lock, and you quickly threw the letter back on the desk to see Kaz coming through the door. He stared at you for a moment, and you dug your pocket before finding your written-out intel, barely being able to hold his gaze. “Van Benschoten is ready to be picked, I found out this morning.”
Kaz narrowed his eyes on you. “What were you doing?”
You swallowed. “Waiting for you. And, uh… I saw my name, and I thought…”
His eyes flickered on the letter on the desk. “Have you always read things that aren’t yours?”
You felt like your heart stopped as you quickly stepped aside, trying to blurt out an apology, but Kaz ignored you, striding over and grabbing the letter, crumpling it into a ball again.
You shook your head. “No, I’m sorry, I thought it had something to do with the job, because it had my name on it. I thought you had left it for me to read.”
He leaned over the desk, throwing the letter into the trashcan before looking at you. “You surely saw it wasn’t about the job once you read the first word. It’s personal, not for you to read.”
You nodded, lowering your gaze to the ground. “I’m sorry. It won’t happen again.”
He was quiet for a moment, before he looked at the little paper in his hand you had given him and sat down, placing his cane next to him to lean against his desk. “Tell me about Van Benschoten.”
You sat down immediately, starting to spurt out everything you had found out. “He changes up his security arrangements every few days, but he has a secret hatch behind a small hut in the garden. I bet we could get to his treasure chamber from there. Inej agrees, I talked about this with her this morning.”
You continued your explanation, tracing your finger along the blueprint in front of Kaz, and once you had finished, he leaned back. “I will send out Inej to scout ahead. Jesper will handle the guards. Wylan creates the distraction. You… you will guide us to the hatch. You’ve seen it in action, I trust you know how to open it?”
You nodded, clasping your hands behind your back. “I do.”
He stood up, picking up his cane again. “Good. Let’s move.”

Yuletide Reading Bingo
The 2024 Yuletide collection is about to be revealed, and many of us love to read more than just our own gifts and treats.
If gamification is your thing, why not enhance your Yuletide reading experience with a fun challenge?
Yuletide Reading Bingo Yuletide Reading Bingo 2024 (permanent link to the 2024 version) Yuletide Reading Bingo 2023 (permanent link to the 2023 version)
With this bingo card generator, you can generate your own Yuletide Reading Bingo Card and try to finish it over a timespan of your choice. If you like, you can challenge yourself to not only reading the fics, but also commenting on them. Last year, I saw people making reclists based on their bingo cards, which is such a cool idea to keep track of the fics they read for each square.
There are no fanfic/fandom/Yuletide-negative or bashing items in the lists. This bingo card is meant to be a positive experience and celebrate fanfiction and fanworks in general and Yuletide in specific.
Tumblr media
Details and screenshot of the mobile version under the cut!
Have a lovely Yuletide and a happy Hanukkah or merry Christmas if you celebrate. <3
Tumblr media
How to Play
Generate a new bingo card until you're (mostly) happy with the results. If some fields are duplicates or contain items you don't want to have in your card, you can then re-roll every single bingo field separately by clicking/tapping on it. Once you have a card that fits your reading habits (or that takes you out of your comfort zone, if you want to challenge yourself), take a screenshot of the card to keep it.
Closing the page and reloading it will reset the card.
Cross off the bingo fields on your screenshot as you read (or read and comment on) fics that you think count for a field.
Items like "Fandom with over 500 works" mean works in the fandom tag, not in the collection. There are specific versions for the number of works in the collection. Items like "Fandom with over 1,000 works" doesn't mean qualifying works. There are specific versions for the number of qualifying works. Items like "Highest number of hits in fandom" or similar however mean in this collection, not in the fandom tag.
If a work you read has a tag that's similar but not identical to a tag on your card, let it count. There were some almost-duplicates that I trimmed.
The Lists
Canon (options like canon released this year, book fandom, etc)
Category (the AO3 categories and their platonic versions: F/F, F & F Gen, etc)
Challenge (the unofficial mini-challenges like Yuleporn, Crueltide, Wrapping Paper, etc)
Creator (only if you checked the "After Reveals" box; options like favourite author, mutuals, etc)
Discovery (various ways you could've found a fic)
Fandom (options like previously ineligible fandom, uncategorised fandom)
Length (wordcounts from drabble to 30k)
Meta (a fic's front-end and stats, also "citrus scale for rating" xD)
Reader (your relationship with the fic; is it your comfort fic, or your first fic in a fandom?)
Style (chatfic, iambic pentameter, custom workskin, stuff like that)
Tag (roughly 1,800 tags from the 2024 main collection; Madness tags to be added)
Trope (roughly 100 tropes)
What do the Checkboxes Mean?
NSFW is basically what it says on the tin. If you tick this box, the NSFW tropes will be added to the mix. If you also ticked the Tags box, NSFW tags will be added.
Tags is also what it says on the tin. It's a list with currently roughly 1,800 tags from the Yuletide 2024 main collection. Around 270 of them are currently marked NSFW and can only be generated if you ticked both the NSFW box and the Tags box.
After Reveals includes items that only make sense after creator reveals, such as "work by last year's recipient" or "creator is your Tumblr mutual".
Leaving the NSFW checkbox unchecked should remove all NSFW tags and tropes, but you could still come across content you find objectionable. Leaving the Tags checkbox unchecked removes all tags, but you could still come across tropes you find objectionable.
This bingo generator can be used to generate totally safe-for-work or family-friendly bingo cards, but it was created by an adult with an adult audience in mind.
If you run into any issues or come across any bugs, please let me know.
If you find something that should be in the NSFW category, but isn't, please also let me know. It's possible that I missed a few tags when I worked through the list of over 2,000 tags in the 2024 main collection. Please don't ask me to remove content you find objectionable.
If there's anything unclear, feel free to ask! I'll try to get back to you as soon as possible, but please understand if it takes a while; it's a busy time for all of us. :D
Just FYI, the platform I'm using, Perchance, added AI options for their generators last year. This is a regrettable decision that I don't condone, and I'd like to emphasise that this generator is 100% handcrafted chaos.
This generator is based on my Fanfiction Reading Bingo I made as a little practice piece last year. It's responsive, which means it should work on desktop and mobile. The mobile layout isn't ideal yet; I'm trying my best to make it better (but I'd also still consider myself a newbie and I'm learning by doing).
The background image is an edited version of this photo by Simon Berger on Unsplash.
I hope you'll find as much fun in using this generator as I found in making it! Happy Yuletide!

Pomegranate wine!
Just started this batch today. The juice is freshly juiced from the pomegranates we picked in my earlier post. There's a ton more juice where that came from, but I probably won't brew more than this one bottle of wine. It's holding just shy of 2 liters.
I'm not putting an airlock in just yet. The bottle is really full so I'm leaving the top open until fermentation slows down enough that I don't have to worry about it overflowing, with just a tissue over the mouth to keep out bugs.
You might be wondering, if I only started the batch today, why there's sediment at the bottom. That's actually undissolved white sugar. The yeast'll get to it one they consume all the sugar in the juice.
I added pectic enzyme, yeast nutrient and extra sugar this morning and then waited for a few hours for the pectic enzyme to do its work before adding in the yeast.
I'm using Lalvin D47 yeast.
Pomegranate juice should naturally have tannins, so I'm not adding any tannins like I would with mead.
