Romania is getting a lot of hate this year, and I wanna say some things.
In terms of the song quality, Theodor Andrei is in his last year of whatever the Romanian equivalent of high school is, and not affiliated with a record label. He wrote the song himself and had it produced by a buddy of his, who (if I remember correctly is a couple years older and makes music semi-professionally). This was a 0 budget production, and it sounds like it. That said, there are some genuinely interesting things going on in both the lyrics and composition ("I'm Feeling Good" sample emulated on a keyboard not withstanding). There is a lot of talent here, but neither experience nor resources. A revamp that used real instruments or even just a higher quality emulator could have done a lot for the song, but Romania never revamps.
The national selection staging was also very clearly something he and his friends from the school drama club came up with. There were a lot of ideas, and not all of them were good. But it showed a lot of passion and creativity. It got people voting. But based on what we have seen from the rehearsals, the delegation said "we are not paying for transport for any props or dancers. We don't care that you are 18 and don't have the money to foot the bill yourself the way some previous acts have. Sucks to suck. Here's an ugly LED."
Like, I feel really bad for this kid. He really wanted to do Eurovision, and his delegation is doing him so dirty. I hope he gets to be more established and comes back sometime in like 15-20 years. Because there is good stuff here, he's just too young and too broke to make much out if it.

Okay so I tuned in the Eurovision... A Little Bit More episode just a few minutes ago and Andrei's mashup is amazing, I love his rendition of Zitti e buoni, BUT I can't help it and I cracked up when he mispronounced poLtroni (''lazy people'' in Italian) as poRtoni (''big doors''). He went from talking about being who you are without shame to architecture real quick.
#Eurovision#eurovision 2023#this is such a smal detail that probably no one else noticed#but I laughed for a solid two minutes#Andrei tvb btw#I'm a D.G.T (On and Off) stan

Favorite Song From Each Country! Part 21/37: Romania!
Hello, Romania! Today we have a country that had one of the most impressive Qualifying Streaks that started early on and went aaaaaall the way to 2017. In that time frame, they've had fan favorites (even fan favorites that NQ'ed and another qualification to their name), and contests where they almost won!
Favorite Entry: Among the entries that brought Romania a really good finish happens to be my favorite: Paula Seling & Ovi's "Playing With Fire" from 2010. I'm not gonna lie here, but if I went to a club with someone and we got a little drunk, I totally would duet this with them. It's certainly a fun song and brought Romania one of their best finishes in the contest, and for good reason! Because this is also a lot of other people's favorites, there isn't much else to say because chances are, someone has already said it! *also that piano opening? Iconic.* RANK: 3rd in 2010 Grand Final/PERSONAL RANK: 2nd of 39 Countries
Thoughts on 2023 Entry: I know this is an unpopular opinion. Roast me all you want. I actually really liked Theodor Andrei's "D.G.T. (Off And On)" this year. It's catchy, and I feel the messiness that people didn't like was part of the charm. The fact that he wrote it and (as much as TVR screwed him over) he made the music video himself was impressive. I hate it for him that TVR decided to screw him over like that and I'm glad he's speaking out about it so future artists don't get the same treatment he had. Zero points was too harsh on a song that I for one, actually enjoyed. Maybe it will be an entry that we will appreciate later with time, who knows? RANK: 15th in 2023 Semi-Final 2 (36th Overall)/PERSONAL RANK: 14th of 37 Countries *yes I know I ranked it above Cha Cha Cha like I said feel free to roast me*

Meet the Liverpool 2023 Eurovision Artists
Theodor Andrei from Romania 🇷🇴
Bucharest-born Theodor is heading to Eurovision with his sassy rock song 'D.G.T. (Off And On)', having won Romanian national selection contest 'Selecția Națională'.
He’s a singer, composer, and actor, with an impressively long list of theatre and voice-acting credits, and that’s because he started performing at a very young age.
One of Theodor’s earliest achievements was reaching the semi-finals of Vocea României Junior (The Voice Kids Romania), then a few years later he turned the judges’ heads on X Factor Romania. In both instances he demonstrated the distinctive rock vocals that are now his professional trademark.
Theodor also has a mantelpiece full of trophies, including grand prizes from the Teleorman Pop Fest 2022 and the Mihaela Runceanu Festival 2022. Will he have to make room for one more?

Preach! ✌️
This years eurovision was GUTWRENCHING, but especially romania 🇷🇴
Their song, D.G.T (Off and On) by Theodor Andrei and its now one of my favourite songs of all time
Please, if you have a spare minute, please listen to it, because god its so good
But maybe dont watch the live version because the staging was.... well, awful
But the most frustrating part is that it had the potential to be SO GOOD! But TVR butchered his performance, Romania just doesnt care about eurovision and it really shows
So he had to do all the staging and set design by himself with help from only his girlfriend because his dancers had left him and he was broke.
And now hes been repaid with hate comments from allll around the world
This man was so excited for eurovision, on his youtube channel you can even see he did a medley of all the eurovision songs which is so sweet oh my god
It just sucks to see this man with so much potential get so much hate with something that should be one of the best memories of his life
Send him so love man, he deserves it

The combination of a strong Venus-Mars aspect, neptune aspects, an emphasis on the Eighth House, and the influence of the asteroids Eros and Psyche stands out as the most representative of the energy encapsulated in "D.G.T. (Off and On)." I think
Mars conjunction can signify a powerful attraction that is hard to resist, emphasizing the 'off and on' nature of the relationship. Similarly, a Venus-Mars square may reflect the conflict between affection and desire, resulting in a tumultuous yet magnetic partnership. These placements encapsulate the ambivalence and emotional complexity conveyed in the lyrics.
Neptune aspects and prominence can significantly relate to the themes present in "D.G.T. (Off and On)." Neptune is the planet of illusion, dreams, and the subconscious, often associated with romantic idealism and the blurring of boundaries in relationships. In the context of the song, a strong Neptune influence—whether through aspects to Venus or Mars, or by being prominent in the natal chart—can symbolize the allure of the woman who “plays him on her fingers.” This influence can create a foggy, almost hypnotic attraction, making it difficult for the individual to see the reality of the situation. The aspect may lead to a tendency to idealize the partner, overlooking red flags and the emotional turmoil that comes with the relationship.
The Eighth House in astrology is often associated with intimacy, transformation, and shared resources. It governs the deeper aspects of relationships, including emotional bonds, sexual connections, and the process of transformation that occurs within partnerships. A prominent emphasis on the Eighth House in a natal chart can suggest an individual who experiences relationships with depth and intensity, resonating with the song's exploration of love that is both exhilarating and fraught with challenges. In the context of the song, the protagonist's experience of being played on her fingers resonates with the themes of surrendering to a powerful emotional connection that feels both magnetic and potentially harmful. Eighth House synastry can evoke feelings of addiction, obsession. The eighth house in astrology also rules obsession.
When planets such as Venus, Mars, or Pluto are situated in the Eighth House, they amplify the themes of passion and transformation. This placement can manifest as an individual who craves deep emotional connections but may also struggle with the complexities that arise from such closeness, paralleling the emotional rollercoaster described in the song.
Asteroids: Eros and Psyche
In addition to standard planetary placements, asteroids can provide nuanced insights into romantic dynamics. The asteroid Eros, which represents romantic desire and passion.. A strong placement of Eros in relation to Venus or Mars can signify a deep longing and an intense romantic drive, reflecting the yearning present in the lyrics.
On the other hand, the asteroid Psyche represents the soul's journey in love and relationships. A significant aspect between Psyche and Venus or Mars can indicate a relationship that transcends physical attraction, delving into the spiritual and emotional realms. This dynamic can exemplify the transformative nature of love, aligning with the song's exploration of the complexities inherent in romantic attachments.

The Last Place Squad
There's a saying my mother tells me when I do rankings of any kind, "Someone's always gotta be vanilla." The implication is that you could have a great batch of anything to rank, but someone has to rank at the bottom (apologies to my vanilla ice cream fans it is a good flavor). And with Eurovision, we have to have one song that ranks not last in the Grand Final (that's a future post though), but last of all the songs. Which I will be ranking (in my pure opinionation)!
Disclaimer: I won't be ranking "Europapa" as dead last because *technically* it was dead last with the disqualification, but it *did* qualify for the grand final. Same goes for my last in Grand Final post later.
2022: "Disko" by LPS (Slovenia) 2015: "Time To Shine" by Mélanie René (Switzerland) 2024: "Scared Of Heights" by Hera Björk (Iceland) 2016: "Play" by Jüri Pootsmann (Estonia) 2019: "22" by Sarah McTernan (Ireland) 2018: "Our Choice" by Ari Ólafsson (Iceland) 2023*: "Like An Animal" by Piqued Jacks (San Marino) 2017: "Spirit Of The Night" by Valentina Monetta & Jimmie Wilson (San Marino) 2021: "The Moon Is Rising" by Samanta Tīna (Latvia)
*: Technically speaking, "Like An Animal" by Piqued Jacks from San Marino and "D.G.T (Off And On)" by Theodor Andrei from Romania ranked dead last in Eurovision 2023 with nul points in their semi. HOWEVER, the tie has been canonically broken by running order. Since Piqued Jacks performed after Theodor Andrei, Piqued Jacks ended up ranked dead last.
Well that does it! I wanted to note here that my Eurovision 2006 ranking originally slated for today will be coming out tomorrow, and my rankings may come out on Saturdays from this point out because it's a lot easier. Just assume for now that you get rankings on weekends.

Ukraine is killing it this year. I really liked this since day one and I like that the revamped version has part of the second verse in Ukrainian now.
Czechia is the bomb. On first listen I wasn't feeling it but now I always sing along to the chorus. Very loudly, very mispronounced and very off key.
Soarele si luna seems to be this year's "Shum". I love that France tried its own version last year, I think Spain had something similar in its national final and people were really mad at Chanel that it didn't win, and Moldova's own version is very nice too. I still think France was robbed last year though, hope Moldova does better.
Solo is not that bad. But nothing to write home about either. Same for Romania
Eurovision 2023 Polls (2/5)
Fun fact, the Czech Republic has officially rebranded itself as "Czechia" and will compete with their "new" name from now on
