The Stars Too Fondly by Emily Hamilton
Adult Science-Fiction feat. diverse cast; physical borrowed from library
So, here’s the thing: Cleo and her friends really, truly didn’t mean to steal this spaceship. They just wanted to know why, twenty years ago, the entire Providence crew vanished without a trace, but then the stupid dark-matter engine started on its own. Now these four twenty-somethings are en route to Proxima Centauri and unable to turn around while being harangued by a hologram that has the face and snide attitude of the ship’s missing captain, Billie. Cleo has dreamt of being an astronaut all her life, and Earth is a lost cause at this point, so this should be one of those blessings in disguise that people talk about. But as the ship travels deeper into space, the laws of physics start twisting; old mysteries come crawling back to life; and Cleo’s initially combative relationship with Billie turns into something deeper and more desperate than either woman was prepared for.
The Altar Within by Juliet Diaz
Adult Spirituality Nonfiction; fills a reading challenge prompt and diversifies year reading
The Altar A Radical Devotional to Liberate the Divine Self is a work of spiritual revolution for all peoples, offering them practices and rituals in the arts of self-worship, self-discovery, and self-activism. The Altar Within is like no other approach to Spirituality, breaking through the vicious cycles of harmful and toxic spiritual practices and beliefs. Diaz speaks for those victimized and enslaved by colonization and offers a new take on personal development based in the resounding plea of our ancestors to live our Divined lives, the ones they could not have for themselves. In the book, Diaz leads the reader through an exploration. Pushing back on #lightandlove and #goodvibesonly, Diaz dismantles the wellness industry, releasing readers from the practice of spiritual bypassing into a far more powerful experience of self, healing, hope, and Spirit. This book is for anyone, including those who can't afford to buy all the tools, pay for the expensive memberships, people who have real-life issues, illnesses, and hardships. Through The Altar Within , Diaz brings the Magic to real life, acknowledging our humanness by connecting with our Spirit. The Altar Within will help readers create success in every area of their lives—from wealth, health, relationships, and personal development, to the nourishment of their relationship with the Divine self. As Diaz explains, when we can finally decolonize our spiritual beliefs, Divinity can be a super force in our lives, making us whole, stronger, wiser, and setting us on a path of transcendent activism. #magicalaf
Morbidly Yours by Ivy Fairbanks
Adult Romance feat. demisexual hero; audiobook releasing August 20
Callum Flannelly would rather dive into an open grave than take a stranger to dinner and a movie. But he can only inherit the family undertaking business and carry on their legacy under one condition: He must marry before his 35th birthday. So it’s out of the mortuary and into the dating scene. Lark Thompson would rather get crushed by a falling anvil than stay next to a funeral home during her stay in Galway, Ireland. The vivacious American cartoon creator and animator came here to embrace life, not be reminded of losing her husband. When Lark learns of Callum’s dilemma and aversion to marrying out of necessity rather than love, she agrees to help the introverted mortician. Although sworn off love herself, she is optimistic that Callum can find The One and secure his inheritance. But as the dating project progresses and their friendship grows, so does a mutual attraction. The more time she spends with serious, sarcastic Callum, the more she dreads finding him a match. And the more disastrous dates he endures, the more he dreads Lark’s imminent return to the states. If they think it’s possible to ignore their connection, they’re dead wrong.

Brexit isn’t working.
You know it, I know it, and so do a third of leavers, according to recent polling. Yet still the leaders of both Britain’s major parties can’t quite bring themselves to say it.
Rishi Sunak couldn’t retreat fast enough from reports that he might be pondering a Swiss-style relationship with the EU. Now Keir Starmer has followed suit, insisting Swiss-style freedom of movement is “a red line for me”, despite arguing the opposite when running for Labour leader. The reality is that whoever is in government after 2024 will almost certainly seek to unravel aspects of Boris Johnson’s deal, which is due for review in 2025, but neither really wants to say so. So instead they’re playing a nervous game of grandmother’s footsteps with the public, creeping a step or two closer to reality-based politics when they think they can get away with it, but freezing the minute they’re spotted. It’s farcical in both cases, but somehow more depressing when it comes from the Labour leader, once the great hero of the pro-remain resistance.
Even some loyal Starmer supporters, resolved to do whatever it takes to win this time, struggle with watching him hold the Brexit line just as public opinion seems to be shifting against it, with a new Redfield and Wilton poll showing 57% would now vote to rejoin the EU. It’s dispiriting, too, to watch business make the case for more immigration while a Labour party that prides itself on being serious and honest about the big challenges hides behind its skirt.
Those close to him make no secret of the fact that his overriding priority is not to jeopardise the victory within reach. He sees “red wall” voters who have swung back from the Tories to Labour as volatile, capable of swinging again. (Nigel Farage certainly thinks so, or he wouldn’t be trying frantically to get back in on the action.) Even without Brexit, by now we would have been entering that dismally familiar stage of the electoral cycle where Ed Milband’s Labour party started selling “controls on immigration” mugs, knowing full well that part of its base wanted to hear it even if another part was outraged and alienated. But if it’s a depressingly familiar story on immigration, on Brexit something slightly subtler is going on.
Thrilling as that poll majority for rejoining the EU looks, it’s almost certainly a majority for something that isn’t on offer, which is going back to 2015. (Watch it vanish if voters are told that the price of rejoining might be adopting the euro.) And even leavers who have turned against Brexit don’t want to be made to feel stupid for having supported it. But if they aren’t yet ready to let go of the idea completely, there is at least solid support now for a form of Brexit that doesn’t leave us so broke. Two-thirds of voters overall favour closer future ties with the EU, according to polling from the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, which this week published a blueprint for sidling in that direction.
First, the paper argues, the government should build goodwill with our neighbours – something Sunak is in fairness now attempting – and seek a workable solution to the flaws in the Northern Ireland protocol. Then it should adopt high standards on food, labour and the environment to show that Britain isn’t trying to undercut its neighbours. Only then should it try negotiating a better deal, although still one that stops short of joining the single market. The overall idea is to insist that Brexit is now a reality but start moving the public towards a softer version of it, without ever quite calling it that. If there is a sense, hanging unspoken in the air, that eventually Britain could move back towards EU membership, then it’s nowhere to be found in this report.
But it’s a plan, at least, and it’s what Starmer has effectively been doing for a while, by simultaneously ruling out freedom of movement while also talking – as he did again at the weekend – about a stronger trading relationship with the EU and reducing red tape for business. The problem is that the remain-friendly bit comes across as technical, dull and vague by comparison with the leave-friendly bit. Starmer is shouting through a megaphone at leave voters but dropping discreet, eminently missable hints for remainers. What it’s lacking is something to make the miserable slog ahead come alive for them.
For it’s a long, long haul from here to anything like the relationship with Europe we once had, assuming that it will be 2028 at least before any major party dares to stand on a remain-friendly platform of pointing out the bleeding obvious. By then we will have had 12 wasted years of missed opportunities, and the EU may have moved on far enough without us that rejoining no longer seems realistic.
But those of us who have endured three failed versions of Brexit already – under Theresa May, Johnson and Liz Truss respectively – are still being asked to sit patiently through at least a couple more, just to prove definitively that the thing we always said would be a disaster is in fact a disaster. If he’s lucky, Starmer will find most Labour remainers are now desperate enough to get rid of this current government that they’ll grit their teeth and fall in behind him, hoping he’ll be bolder in power than in opposition. But he shouldn’t take that goodwill for granted.

Is Christmas a Midwinter Pagan Festival (Yule)? #christmas #yuletideseason #yule Does Christmas originate from a Pagan Midwinter festival? This exploration has been a fascinating journey, and I can't wait for you to join me in it! In this video, I delve into: - The historical transformation from Pagan Midwinter celebrations, like the Roman Saturnalia and Norse Yule, to the Christian Nativity. - The role of the Winter Solstice in these ancient cultures. - The intriguing choice of December 25th, a date deeply connected with Pagan solstice festivities, as the birthdate of Christ. 🔮 Spoiler alert: It's not as straightforward as you might think! While there are undeniable connections between Christmas and pre-Christian Pagan festivals, the evolution of this beloved holiday is complex and multifaceted. The integration of Pagan elements, including aspects of Yule, into Christmas reveals a rich tapestry of influences that extend beyond a simple one-to-one transition from Paganism to Christianity. Employee benefits in Ireland: All you need to know
Mandatory Employee Benefits in Ireland Personal retirement savings account (PRSA) All companies, which either do not offer an occupational pension scheme or where employees must wait longer than six months to join the occupational Irish pension scheme, must offer access to a PRSA. There are no mandatory contributions by the employer, just access to a PRSA. It is up to the employee whether they join the PRSA or not. Access must be provided within six months of the employee starting employment. Non-Mandatory Employee Benefits in Ireland Most common non-mandatory benefits in Ireland. As most of them are benefits in kind, they are subject to income tax, which employees need to pay. According to tax regulations, employees are exempted from paying tax on one-off benefits in kind of up to €500 per year. Cycle-to-work scheme This is a government initiative that allows employers to sign up to a provider that offers employees an opportunity to purchase bikes and accessories utilising their gross income and hence saving on tax, PRSI and USC costs. Employee assistance programme This is a confidential counselling programme and information service that is available to all employees and their families. Employer pension contribution Contributing to pension schemes at independent funds is becoming more common for both employers and employees. If a pension workplace scheme is approved under the relevant legislation, it may benefit from various tax concessions, subject to certain limits. In the upcoming years, Ireland will be rolling the possibility of auto-enrolment into pension funds. Life Assurance Some employers offer employees life insurance after the probation period. This also represents a taxable benefit in kind. Income Protection Income protection provides a replacement income if an employee is unable to work due to an illness or injury. Employers commonly offer this benefit in Ireland. Paid Maternity, Paternity and Adoption Leave Employees are not guaranteed pay during their maternity, paternity and adoption leave, although they may qualify for benefits from the Department of Social Protection. Many employers provide for some level of compensation during that time. In addition, many employers offer extra time off on top of the statutory limit. Gym Membership In some companies, a gym membership is provided as an employee benefit. Employee stock ownership plan An employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) is a type of employee benefit plan which is intended to encourage employees to acquire stocks or ownership in the company. Dental and Vision Plan Some private healthcare packages include dental and vision benefits. Extra Holidays Some companies give employees 4-8 extra days off free or offer the ability to purchase additional days. Stock Options The complexities of issuing options to employees in Ireland are intricate and subject to tax. Regulations are still in a grey area. For more information, get in touch with us directly. Work Flexibility Some companies offer compressed working weeks during the summer months, earlier finish on Fridays, flexible working hours and work from home options. Training and Development Courses Many companies offer training opportunities for their employees, whether that is through external providers or in-house. As long as the training directly links with the job a person is doing or what the business does, and helps facilitate work that is needed in the company, employees are exempt from paying tax on them. Another contribution related to training is tuition reimbursement.

Getting Started in Cycling – A Guide
“There’s no turning back once you’ve conquered your first hill or felt the rush of descending at high speed”
By Guest Writer, Paul Norton
They say cycling is the new golf. Both are sociable, get you out in the fresh air and can be expensive!
However, that’s where the similarities stop. Unlike golf, cycling gives many choices and can take many forms for those not satisfied with just one discipline. You have options such as road, mountain, track, touring, commuting, sportives, and even triathlon.
But, which one is right for you? Well, if you’re unsure whether you might be a fat-tyre, baggy-clothes trail muncher, or a skinny-tyre, lycra-clad roadie, then get yourself to a bike shop, a local rental company or a trail centre. These may give you options to try a bike or rent one for the day or weekend.
This type or trial will give you a feel for which discipline might be the one for you. But don’t worry if you find that after six months that you should’ve chosen a different path – you can never have too many bikes! The perfect amount of bikes to own is n+1, with n being the current number of bikes in garage!
After you have decided you want to be the next Nicholas Roche, Aileen Reid or Julien Absalon, here are some pointers on Getting Started.
1. Cash is King
There are a few crucial factors to consider before dropping the cash on a bicycle that could, perhaps, buy you a small car. The first is price. Spend what your budget allows.
You don’t need to have the latest and greatest when starting off: as a novice you won’t be able to tell the difference between your Ultegra and your 105 (these are some of the components that come on road bikes).
So, what determines the price?
When it comes to road bikes for example, the major factors include the gear components (called groupsets – the he most common brand is Shimano which has 6 levels of mechanical and 2 levels of electronic groupsets), followed by wheels and frame material (aluminium for an entry level frame and carbon fibre for more performance).
The same is true for mountain bikes but with the added choice of hard tail (front suspension fork only) or full suspension (front and rear shocks).
The Bike-to-Work scheme is well worth looking into and can save you up to 52% on the price of a bike and accessories if you pay the high rate of tax. Check with your employer if you can avail of this.
At a minimum, expect to spend €650 for an entry-level road or mountain bike.
2. Brand Snobbery
If you are into your Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger then you’ll probably want the latest bicycle brand in vogue and clothing to match. For the rest of you, this might not be a factor at all.
However, you will still want to make sure you are getting quality and a good bang for your buck. A good rule of thumb is to check out which brands the professional teams ride and pick one of those. Invariably these brands get a lot of feedback from the pros which trickle down through the product range and you know you are getting a quality product.
3. If the Shoe Fits
Just like a pair of bad fitting shoes which cause you blisters, a bad fitting bike will cause you discomfort and won’t do much for your motivation to get you out and ride on those wet and windy winter mornings.
There are two things to consider about bike fit – size and geometry. Size is the most important – you can adapt to the geometry of the bike but you can’t lengthen or shorten your legs. A good bike shop should be able to select the right frame size for you. Next is the geometry.
Most bicycle brands will offer the consumer a ‘relaxed’ or more ‘aggressive’ geometry depending on the use (leisure or racing) or personal preference. Once that is decided it’s just a matter of adjusting the saddle height and/or the handlebar stem length. Again, a good sales-person should do this for you free of charge.
Once you have achieved a good position on the bike it should feel reasonably comfortable and a natural fit. You can always improve your position by getting a professional bike fit to achieve the optimal riding position and maximum comfort and power. Expect to pay between €75 and €180 for a fit, depending of the system used.
4. The Accessories and Clothing
After you have your shiny new steed, next come the clothes and accessories. First on the list is definitely a helmet. Some will argue that helmets are uncomfortable or sweaty or that drivers will take more risks when they see you wearing one. However, I am firmly in the pro-helmet camp because, on occasions, my helmet has saved me a trip to the ER!
Helmets will range from €40 to €300, the differences being in weight, comfort, materials used and varying levels of protection.
You’ll also need a few other essentials before setting off – a pump (a mini one for the bike and a floor pump for the garage), a ‘multi-tool’ for repairs on the road, a spare inner tube and tyre level, a saddle pack to put all those items into, and a water bottle and cage. All this should set you back in the region of €75 to €100.
One tip I will definitely give you when it comes to clothing – don’t be a cheapskate when buying shorts. Your bum will thank you for it. A quality pair of shorts (circa €100) plus some chamois cream makes a big difference once you start increasing your mileage. And please, for heaven’s sake, no underwear or GAA shorts! Not only does underwear look ridiculous under lycra, it will end up chaffing. And the GAA shorts: lads, you’re fooling no one!
In winter you’ll have to consider other extras, such as lights, mudguards and winter clothing. A good winter jacket and bib-tights are worth their weight in gold when the cold weather sets in. As Sean Kelly always says, “there’s no such thing as bad weather just the wrong clothing”.
5. To Shave or not to Shave
Onto that burning question, ‘do I need to shave my legs’? Well, if you’ve just bought a mountain bike and baggy shorts, the answer is ‘no’, but if you’ve invested in a lightweight road bike and lycra shorts – well, I’ll leave it up to you.
There are various logical reasons given for shaving. For example, if you take a slide off the bike the hairs won’t get into the road-rash, and it makes massages easier. There’s also a certain amount of vanity involved – shaved legs look better (to cyclists anyway). Mainly however, it’s probably as statement of intent – “I’m a committed cyclist” – and you have truly joined the club.
So, shaving doesn’t make you go any faster but you’ll look pretty pro when sipping your expresso outside your favourite coffee shop.
6. Pedal Power
We’ve all been there – stopped at a red light and can’t get the foot out in time and down you go! This is followed immediately by swift remount and an investigative look around to see if anyone caught sight of our embarrassing tussle between forward momentum and gravity.
What I’m referring to here is whether you should go with clip-in style-pedals or stick with the more predictable, gravity-friendly, flat pedal.
Well, like the geometry of the bike, it’s your preference. If you choose a clip-in pedal you will need to buy a corresponding shoe (both will start at €125 combined). The advantage of going this route is that you will have more power and efficiency in your pedal stroke and, in the long run, you will have greater control over the bike.
Clipping in and out is daunting at first but becomes second nature after a couple of rides and this goes for both roadies and mountain bikers.
There are two main styles of pedal and shoe: a road shoe with a flat sole and three holes to fit the cleats and a mountain bike shoe with a recessed area to fit the smaller mountain bike cleat. The corresponding pedals (Shimano, Look, Time, SpeedPlay, Crank Brothers to name a few) will either be a larger, one-sided pedal for the road shoe or a smaller, double-sided pedal for the mountain-bike shoe.
Generally the road combination is lighter and your weight is spread over a greater area but the mountain bike combo has the advantage of clipping in on both sides of the pedal. In both cases, the cleats are supplied with the pedals.
7. It’s Go Time
Now that you’ve got all the gear it’s time to hit the trails or tarmac.
If you haven’t ridden a bike in a while it’s a good idea to do a few short spins on a safe route that you are familiar with, in order to get used to the handling of the bike. Practice clipping in and out, cornering, accelerating and braking. Remember to take a mobile phone with you.
Once you feel more confident, the best way to improve you fitness and get the most enjoyment out of your bike is to ride with friends or a club. You can find you nearest club from the Cycling Ireland or Triathlon Ireland websites.
Don’t be put off by the perception that all club members are racing cyclists. Many clubs having leisure or touring sections within them and are split into groups with varying distances and speeds depending on your level or ability. You’ll find yourself moving up from the C group to the B group in a very short space of time. Riding in a club will improve your fitness and bike handling skills, as cycling in a group takes a lot more concentration and skill.
Once you get the hang of riding in a group there’s no better feeling than belting along in the slipstream of the rider’s wheel in front. If racing is your aim, then you will need to take out a Cycling Ireland (CI) or Triathlon Ireland (TI) competitive licence. You get a discount once you are a member of a club. You won’t be able to race without a licence.
Cycling Ireland offer a non-competitive licence that covers you in the result of injury while out training with you club. Some clubs look for this as a minimum. Whether it’s racing or non-competitive events (called sportives or sportifs), you can find a full list of events on the CI and TI websites.
8. What’s a Watt?
Once you started you may want to improve – fast!
If you’re like me and you’re really bad at planning your weekly schedule but you want to improve your fitness and achieve a certain goal, then the best way to do this is to invest in a coach.
Your coach will help you build a structured training plan around your busy life to help get the best from your training and achieve your targets. Rather than going out doing the same old routes and the same old tempo, your coach will build variety into the plan and you will start to see results in a matter of weeks.
Coaches will use various methods to gauge how hard you’ve trained and how your fitness is progressing. The best tool is the power meter which measures your effort in watts. While these can cost anywhere from €700 to €2,000 and upwards, it can be a key investment in improving your performance.
Another tool would be to use a heart rate monitor which is less likely to break the bank. Your coach will help you identify your heart rate zones in which you will carry out different sessions. By varying your distances, speed and heart rate or power, you will start to see gains in both your aerobic (longer distance and less intensity) and anaerobic (shorter distance and higher intensity) fitness levels.
9. Hang Sangers or Power Bars?
To get power out you have to put fuel in. But it can be a delicate balance.
Too little fuel and you can ‘Bonk’! We’ve all been there, riding along chatting away one minute and the next we’re weaving all over the road with blurred vision and hallucinating! ‘The Bonk’, ‘Hitting the Wall’ – call it what you like – is the one thing that cyclists starting off fear the most when doing a long ride. So how do you fend off the ‘Man with the Hammer’?
As you become a more accomplished cyclist, your body will adapt to the longer hours in the saddle without taking on as much fuel. For novices, however, it can be a real shock to the system once you start to push your body beyond what it’s used to.
A proper breakfast, such as a large bowl of porridge along and honey with toast and Nutella, can usually sustain you for up to two hours. If you know you will be out on the bike for longer than this you will need to bring food along. I would recommend something that’s easy to consume on the go and fits into you back pockets. If you don’t want to go down the energy bar or gel route, bring a banana and jam sandwich, fig rolls, jelly babies, fruit cake or dried fruits.
Avoid things that can melt like chocolate or ice cream – it makes a real mess of your jersey!
If you are bringing two bottles with you, take one with just water and add an electrolyte or electrolyte and energy sachet/tablet to the other bottle. It’s important to keep drinking even if it’s cold or raining.
Next on the dreaded list after hitting the wall is cramping. The electrolytes will help to keep those muscle cramps at bay. The big mistake people can often make is eating too much, either the night before, that morning, or throughout the ride. There’s no need to stuff your face with buckets of pasta as you’ll end up feeling bloated and sluggish. There is only so much food that can be absorbed into the muscles as energy and the rest is stored as fat.
Also avoid spicy and greasy foods the day before as they might send you looking for the closest WC or bush! Little and often is always a good guide to stick by.
10. No Turning Back
Whether you are young or old, male or female, short or tall, fat or skinny, cycling is an all-inclusive sport that is healthy, sociable and highly addictive. There’s no turning back once you’ve conquered your first hill or felt the rush of descending at high speed.
You may as well re-mortgage the house, sell a kidney or trade in the BMW, because there’s a risk of you becoming very familiar with the inside of your local bike shop!
Go for it, and enjoy it!

The Morrigan is a powerful spirit of birth, death, sex, destruction, and fertility. She is among the goddesses associated with Ireland's well-being and sovereignty. She is an oracular, prophetic spirit who can reveal the future and anyone's destiny - that is, if she feels like it. The Morrigan is a headstrong, passionate goddess who does as she pleases.
The Morrigan is most famous as a war goddess. She may instigate battle or meddle with it. The concept of minding her own business does not exist: Battle is her business. Anything that captures her interest is her business. The Morrigan is also renowned for giving sound battle advice. She advised the Dagda on how to deal with the Fomorians.
More than just a battle goddess, the Morrigan is also a goddess of life, birth, and sex.
She represented the circle of life and was associated with both birth and death in Celtic mythology. Her name translates to “great queen” or “phantom queen”. She was a shape-shifter and looked over the rivers, fresh water and lakes. She is also described as being the patroness of revenge, magic, priestesses, night, prophecy and witches. The myths surrounding Morrigan all involve part of the life cycle. Her stories are found in multiple texts, including the Book of Isaiah.
The Morrígan is often described as a trio of individuals, all sisters, called "the three Morrígna". Membership of the triad varies; sometimes it is given as Badb, Macha and Nemain while elsewhere it is given as Badb, Macha and Anand. It is believed that these were all names for the same goddess.
The Morrigan is represented similarly in almost every artistic representation of her. She is young, with long, flowing dark hair. Her clothing is black and sometimes very revealing. Other times, she is cloaked so as not to show her face. Because she was a shape-shifter, she is often shown with one of the more common forms she would take on-the crow or raven.

New Post has been published on https://www.a1coaching.net/how-to-make-the-break/
How to Make the Break
A breakaway is a very unique thing to cycling.
A couple of riders try their luck and take on the whole peleton in a race to the finish line.
In terms of Irish racing, races tend to follow the same format race after race; a fast start with plenty of attacking which leads to a small group of riders that break away and contest the win.
In other countries and at a professional level, getting in a breakaway tends to be a suicide mission in an effort to gain exposure for the team and its sponsors.
How to get in a breakaway is one of the questions I get asked most often.
It’s a skill that you acquire over time. You hear the term ‘breakaway specialist’, these are simply riders that know what to look out for and know what to do when a breakaway is being established.
It requires you to be a strong but smart rider and it isn’t a particularly difficult skill to acquire.
Warm up
Above all a good warm up is essential.
Most breakaways tend to go in the opening few kilometres.
Without a good warm up you can kiss the breakaway goodbye.
You don’t need to complete bury yourself before the race starts but a few efforts that will prepare your body for the hard effort are essential.
A few minutes at a reasonable intensity and a few short sprints will work fine.
When to attack
There are two main considerations to take into account when attacking in a race to form a breakaway, the section of the race to attack on and/or the moment in the race to attack.
Knowing the section to attack at is a case of simply doing your homework i.e knowing the course of the race.
There is no point in attacking on a short hill if it is followed by a 5km downhill, as the momentum of the peleton will have you caught in seconds.
Rolly and twisty roads on the circuit are perfect locations for launching attacks that will lead to successful breakaways. ‘Out of sight, out of mind’!
The perfect moment in a race to attack are the moments when most people least expecting it.
This is usually after a hard section when everyone eases up and takes a moment to get their breath back.
In stage races these moments often follow intermediate sprints etc. Attacking when it’s hard or from the gun is often a waste of time as everyone is on the lookout for a move to go.
Commit
Committing to an attack is important but does require some common sense.
When you attack you’ve got to go full gas and hope the element of surprise establishes a gap between you and the other riders.
This doesn’t mean a full gas sprint for 30 seconds that you can’t recover from and end up blowing your lights out 2 minutes later. Attack hard but have something left to maintain the attack.
This can be replicated in training by having full gas sprints before you start your efforts.
Breakaway companions
As I mentioned earlier, breakaways are about a small group of riders taking on the peleton.
As a result, cooperation within the breakaway is key.
Stronger riders have a duty to drive on the break when they can and weaker riders have to offer help when they can.
A perfect example of this is a heavy rider that will struggle in the hills rides on the flat sections while the lighter sits on until the hills.
The lighter rider will then ride at the front while the heavier rider sits on.
Communication within the break is far more effective than playing mind games and ruining each other’s chances.
Keep the sly tactics for the closing kilometres when the breakaway is looking like it will make it to the line.
Train for breakaways
Apply similar efforts that you will experience in a breakaway in your training.
As I mentioned earlier, sprint before you start an interval, on group rides practice up and over similar to that in a breakaway, implement short hard efforts e.g Tabatha type efforts into your training to mimic following wheels to get in a breakaway etc.
Chances are you won’t get into a breakaway purely by luck.
These are some of the skills you have to master first.
Once you do, it’ll become second nature and getting into breakaways will become much easier.
See you up the road!

@bitterrosebrokenspear You've fallen into my trap of dragging people into Ulster Cycle hell
While not Thomas Kinsella's The Tain (which I do highly recommend, it's like 10 bucks on Google Books and covers alternate versions of certain stories I'll be sharing here, particularly the Deidre story), these are still pretty good translations and they're also free.
Most prominently Ciaran Carson's Tain Bo Cualinge translation is free on Scribd.com, and you don't even need a membership to read the whole thing. Carson's translation covers the major body of the Tain, but doesn't contain any of the major background stories like Kinsella's does.
https://www.scribd.com/document/186784262/The-Tain-by-Ciaran-Carson-2008
celt.ucc.ie has a full translation of Tochmarc Emire (The Wooing of Emer) on their site (translated by Kuno Meyer). It is entirely unabridged unlike most other versions of Tochmarc Emire. This results in it being a fair bit clunkier, as Cu reiterates his entire conversation with Emer to Laeg, something most translations skip over.
https://celt.ucc.ie/published/T301021.html
This is a translation of Serglige Con Culainn (The Wasting Sickness of Cu Chulainn/Sickbed of Cu Chulainn). It's a bit more flowery than the translation in Jeffery Gantz includes in his collection, but it gets the point across, even if some lines feel a little less impactful. It has nothing to do with the Tain, but 90% of Emer takes I'm forced to read on this site feel like they've only read a summery of the last quarter of Serglige, so I'm shoving it here anyway.
http://www.luminarium.org/mythology/ireland/cuchulainnsick.htm
Here's the Death of the Sons of Usnach, for Naoise and Deidre content and juicy Fergus backstory. This particular version (one of the two, Kinsella's uses the alternate) also features Cu threatening to gut his uncle like a fish.
https://www.yorku.ca/inpar/usnach_hull.pdf
Here's Fled Bricrenn (Bricriu's Feast). It's kinda like Prototype Gawain and the Green Knight without the homoerotiscism, but Emer participates in what amounts to an Ancient Irish rap battle and tells the entire female population of Ulster she could cuck them if she so chose, so that's rad.
https://www.yorku.ca/inpar/bricriu_henderson.pdf
And, as has been mentioned before, Eleanor Hull (who also did the Naoise and Deidre translation from earlier) compiled a whole collection of tales in her "The Cuchullin Saga of Irish Literature". This includes stories I haven't mentioned; like Aided Con Culainn (The Death of Cu Chulainn) and Aided Oinfhir Aife (Connla)
https://archive.org/details/cu31924026824940/page/n345/mode/2up
As for the Mahabarata, the translation I've been reading is on google books for 5 bucks. Hope anything about this massive tangent has been helpful to ya.
The Mahabharata is approximately 41 Tain Bo Cualinges long.
The Mahabharata is also 26 times as long as Thomas Kinsella's "The Tain"

A few shots from the past week.
Caleb is smiling more and more and Sam and I are having more and more fun with the little guy.
On Sunday, after going out for a Sunday Roast with our friends, we did a 30 minute walk along the river and then sat on a bench by a crowd of pigeons. It was a lovely Sunday. I love the willow trees lining the river. Along the section of the river where I commute, there are fewer willows but many brick walls with colorful ivy.
This weekend, Sam and I have a relaxed Friday evening to give us energy for the rest of the weekend - particularly important since I’m a bit under the weather...I blame the weather. Saturday is now quite a routine for Sam and me. He gets up at 7:47 and cycles to his 9:00 Parkrun with the other crazy 500+ members of the community who religiously run it each Saturday morning. Then he cycles off to teach guitar lessons at the local Guildford Music Store, usually starting at 10 or 10:30. If it’s 10:30, he quickly cycles home for a fast shower before cycling back into town. I will have a slightly more leisurely morning before cycling off to town to teach my (now increasingly standard) 3 to 4 piano lessons. In my head, this is my break from work because I’m teaching a bunch of eager children. In fact, I realize I’m actually teaching one small boy and the rest have been adults (aged ~35-55). But apart from one guy, who is very much not a beginner and likely already too high a level for me to be teaching him, the rest of either brand new or have their one song they can play well. And they’re all super excited to learn. Sooo, while I’m tired and not necessarily always thrilled to be cycling into town to work on Saturdays now, it’s a different kind of work. And I’m paid in cash. And I like having cash, and playing music, so why not I guess.
After Sam finishes his 8 lessons, we will meet at the University Cathedral grounds, where we will partake in the Guildford Oktoberfest! The lederhosen are already sitting neatly folded next to Sam’s bag for tomorrow. TBD if we actually wear them but we’re going prepared.
We are back to cat sitting for our friend’s lovely cats, Mouse and Pepper, from tomorrow until Tuesday whilst they visit family in Northern Ireland. Then on Sunday, we’re doing a different kind of paid mystery visit to an innovative golfing experience which mixes Putt Putt/Golf and Bocce Ball. For our secret review, we are paid to play a game, get a month’s membership and get hot/soft drinks and lunch. That’s Sunday afternoon. Sunday night, Sam is playing acoustic guitar for the evening church service.
It’ll be a packed weekend. Fingers crossed it’s dry, because I really don’t like cycling back and forth all weekend in the cold rain.

From Couch To Snowdonia Adventure Race In 12 Weeks
12th March 2019
If someone came up to you tomorrow and asked if you’d want to take part in a 25km run, cycle and kayak adventure race in 12 weeks’ time, you’d think that there’s no way you could even be close to ready! But the good news is you have plenty of time to train with the right plan in place.
Quest Wales takes place on 8th June and sees participants tackle trail running, cycling and kayaking through the stunning Snowdonia National Park, a location that attracts nearly four million tourists each year.
If you have a relative level of fitness then you are in a great position to do this event. To help you on your way, Bernard Smyth, a Quest regular and trainer at Ultimate Conditioning has come up with a 12-week ‘Couch to Quest’ training plan to make your adventure racing dream a reality from scratch. You don’t need a gym membership to get adventure race ready either, all the plan needs is your running shoes, a bike and your dedication!
Here are Bernard’s top tips:
START STEADY – Weeks 1-4 of the plan are aimed at establishing a solid base level of fitness. Don’t feel like you must head straight out on the roads on the bike, the first four weeks of bike sessions can be done on an upright exercise bike.
REST IS IMPORTANT – Even as the event draws near, the plan never exceeds three days of training a week. While improving your fitness throughout the training plan is important, making sure you rest and allow your body the time to recover us also vital. Week six of the plan is a dedicated rest week where you dial down your training.
HEAD OFF ROAD – Quest Wales will challenge you with undulating, uneven terrain so while it’s important to get the running miles in, doing so on off-road trails will be more beneficial to your preparations.
MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU – Everyone’s lifestyle is different so your three training days a week can be whenever you can fit them in. It doesn’t have to be as strict as Monday – Wednesday – Saturday but if you complete two days in succession, make sure you rest for 24 hours before the third.
BUILDING BRICKS – As week five of the training plan kicks in, your ‘brick’ sessions (running and cycling combined) become increasingly important. This means combining running and cycling disciplines with minimal rest in between to replicate the race day experience at Quest.
DON’T OVERDO IT – In the final two weeks leading up to Quest Wales, make sure you go easy to allow your body to recover. You don’t want all your hard work to be undone and end up exhausted on race day!

Quest Wales is part of the Quest Adventure Series which encompasses several one-day adventure races. Already well-established, events across Ireland in Killarney, Kenmare, Glendalough and Achill attracted over 8,000 participants in 2018.
Entries start at £75.00 and you can register at https://www.questadventureseries.com/race/quest-wales/.
