31st of August 2024: Guerreran Hooknose Snake

At this point I’m not sure if it is just genuinely this many snakes who’re only known from one individual from over 100 years ago or whether I just keep getting unlucky with random snake species. Anyway, today’s Snake Saturday is taken up by the Guerreran Hooknose Snake (Ficimia ruspator) [1].

They were initially categorised in 1941, however the snake the species is based on was collected in 1894. She was found in Mexico and at first thought to be F. publia. She’s just under 15 cm long in total. The main thing that separates her from the remainder of the species is the high number of blotches, those being 43 [2].

Obviously they are classified as Data Deficient by the IUCN, as they’re only known for certain to have appeared in Guerrero once in 1894. They write that there is doubt on their taxonomic validity [3], which may be true. In 1975, authors of one research paper insisted it’d be good to keep them around until more is known about the natural variation of F. publia [4] and more recently in 2014 they were included in Snakes of the World by Wallach et al. [5].

Favorite band:  Sleeping At Last. I love songs that have theatrical or poetic lyrics, and O'Neal's voice adds a beautifully emotional touch to everything he sings.

First book:  Green Eggs and Ham or And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street.

Last book:  Flowers for Algernon. Haven't stopped thinking about it since.

First game:  Mario Golf or The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask

Last game:  Pokémon Café ReMix, though I did just purchase Superliminal

Favorite game:  It changes constantly, but Supergiant's Hades is a recurring contestant

Working on:  I'm currently reading The Picture of Dorian Gray, playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and watching The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. My dream is to publish a fantasy novel that I'm "working on."

Last movie:  It’s been some time, but I believe the last movie I watched was Murder on the Orient Express (1974). In theaters, Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3.

Rainbow Snake

I took the trash out to the bin in the garage yesterday afternoon and noticed what looked like a piece of cable laying on the boot cleaner rug... thing, walking past it the first time and then actually taking a moment to think about why that seemed weird when I turned back around to go back into the house. I am me, so my reaction was very much "Oh no, that's adorable."

The likelihood that they were trapped in the garage was quite minimal, given all of the ground-level holes in the walls that probably shouldn't be there to begin with (don't ask, I don't know, I'm just as baffled as anyone else), but I decided I'd try to gently herd them out into the front yard where I usually see snakes around here anyway. ...First attempt was a failure since there was a convenient crack to hide in. A few hours later I noticed they were back in the same spot (hence: picture!), so I tried to block that exit while getting them aimed toward the garage door and that didn't work either. Haven't seen them back, though, so as much as I hate to take away a comfy snake bed, I'm hoping they've wandered back outside to find a better place to settle in for the cold weather.

...Mostly because the housemate is very, very not in agreement with my appreciation of snakes. Luckily he's more likely to shriek than to have an attack response, so I should be alerted if they show up again.

Amphiox Update + Preview

Waving 'hi' to everyone with my wee doom eel fin. I have completed the print version of Amphiox, including the cover, and sent it to the printer for a proof copy. Now I am working on the website layout.

The website itself is up and functional. I just need to figure out how it's going to look on desktop and phone. Do I make the former a typical click-through and the latter a scrolly Tapas thing? How much work am I willing to create for myself?

All I know is, that 'news' section on my site is wholly devoted to page transcripts.

Decisions, decisions...But I don't have to format the pages just yet.

7th of September 2024: Cope’s Vine Snake

Much like yesterday’s frog, today’s snake is also arboreal (living in trees), though in this case on the other side of the Pacific ocean [1]. This is Cope’s Vine Snake (Oxybelis brevirostris). They‘re around a metre in length [2] and are found in Central America and Northern Columbia and Ecuador [3].

At night, they can be found perching in trees, usually not above 2 m in height. This can vary based upon their length though, as longer Cope’s Vine Snakes will generally be found higher up on woody branches as opposed to leaves. This difference may be either because it’s not worth it energy wise or because it’s just physically harder especially for smaller snakes to climb that high. There was one that managed to get 10 m up though. There has also been no recorded sexual dimorphism in body length, though males tend to have longer tails [4].

They primarily feed on frogs and lizards when foraging during the day. This can either be on the ground or still in the trees. Aside from streams and forest trails, they can also inhabit secondary forest [2]. They are considered uncommon in certain areas, but overall of Least Concern, as the conversion of rainforest for cattle ranching and other agricultural use tends not to affect their habitat as much [3].
