This happened in my state, a "trans refuge" state. Because Savannah Williams was a trans woman of color, this man killed her. No other reason. We ARE living in a time of increased, fatal violence towards trans women. EVERYWHERE. in blue states. In states with protective laws. In every single country on earth.
The hypervisibility and hyperviolence trans women receive is not a coincidence. Moving away from the "masculine centric" is punished. Being a woman is punished. Being queer is punished. Trans women exist in a very specific intersection of these issues, that not many other queer people can experience.
Besides the specific avenues of oppression trans women face, more and more transphobes are feeling emboldened to hate action. Powerful "talking heads" spew transphobic rhetoric on social media with no repercussions. People with audiences inoculate their viewers to casual transmisogyny. Trans women's existence specifically is being branded as dangerous, violent, something that can't be tolerated in public.
We MUST believe our sisters when they tell us what they experience. We MUST fight and strive to do everything we can to make the world safe for trans women. WE MUST ENSURE QUEER SPACES ARE FREE FROM TRANSMISOGYNY. Anything less is unacceptable.

For the oc pride ask: Viv and Nova 3, 9, 16, and 19?
9. Nova likes to call himself a Vejigante.
3. They played opposite gender roles in a play once, and it helped crack their egg.
16. They were aromantic and bisexual when first drafted and now they are abroromantic and abrosexual.
19. "Look Closer" the overall title for the story of Viv and Nova is that they were murdered for being trans. They decided to become demons because they wanted to punish those who stood by and let it happen. This story has it baked into the characters' background. my other stories. I try not to let my other stories have the same experiences or transhood. I'm genderfluid and I love depicting joy more than anything, but I love the healing portion to said joy. The trauma of being murdered and being forcibly separated is the main reason why Nova and Viv have problems within their relationship. They can't move on because they are alive thanks to their rage. They are alive because they want to use every ounce of anger they have and hurt those who harmed them. However, it sometimes leads them to want to hurt themselves. They got revenge, but what do they do with the pain.
It causes them to lash out and get frustrated with each other because they both have the idea that they should know what the other is feeling. It's a story about communicating and learning to let others help you. It's a story of once childhood friends ripped apart and meeting each other again. It's a story of realizing you don't know this person anymore, but you can know them again.

Big shocker that LoTT had a role in this. Not even so indirectly. Absolute waste of brain matter that one is.

Just got my first random terf attack since starting this blog a couple years ago. Honestly, that seems like someone was falling down on the job.
Anyway, friendly reminder that, around these parts, terfs get eaten by bears.

Another thing I think is worth discussing:
Transphobic and other anti-LGBTQ+ violence perpetuated by, against, and among youth isn't just a matter of punishing the aggressors for their actions.
Adults throughout the U.S. -- school administrators, school boards, lawmakers, etc. -- have actively and willfully created an environment where LGBTQ+ (particularly trans and nonbinary) youth are dehumanized by not only institutions and the adults that run them, but by their peers.
They effectively deny kids the right to do something as basic as use the bathroom. They ban teachers from using the names and pronouns of trans/nb youth. They create policies requiring schools to notify parents when kids express LGBTQ+ identity (which puts those kids at risk of isolation, abuse, and "conversion" attempts if their families are transphobic or homophobic). They challenge and ban books by and/or about LGBTQ+ people (again: especially trans/nonbinary people), invoking "parents' rights." This not only infringes on (most importantly imo) kids' basic right to read, but also infringes on other parents' rights, dictating how they raise their children by removing anything they deem "inappropriate" from school libraries and curricula.
They have sent a message to LGBTQ+ youth themselves through these actions -- "you are unwanted; you are unwelcome; we do not see you as children worthy of an education and basic human decency, but as boogeymen and the embodiment of the types of people we hate." This erodes the mental health of and contributes to the already disproportionately high rates of self-harm and suicide among LGBTQ+ youth.
But these adults have also sent a corresponding message to straight, cisgender youth that their LGBTQ+ peers are to be silenced, denied humanity, and eliminated from any space they occupy at any cost (whether that means bullying them into the closet and locking the door, or using violence or ostracism to silence the ones who cannot or do not hide their identities).
There's also a broader discussion to be had about how the criminal justice system deals with violence perpetrated by minors: punitive vs. rehabilitative approaches; accounting for the developmental stage of the minor(s) in question while still centering and ensuring justice for the victim(s); discriminatory practices in conviction and sentencing (as well as whether someone is tried as a juvenile or an adult), particularly with regards to race and class.
But, point is, I don't think we can stop anti-LGBTQ+ and other hate-based violence and bullying by focusing on the individual perpetrators involved in each instance, or addressing it on a case-by-case basis. The adults in charge are (whether implicitly or explicitly) sending the message that all LGBTQ+ people, including LGBTQ+ kids, are -- in the words of Oklahoma State Senator Tom Woods referring to Nex Benedict -- "filth". At the end of the day, these are grown adults bullying and abusing literal children. They can't absolve themselves of responsibility when those kids' peers mirror that hate.

paraphrasing from a post ages ago that has stuck in my mind ever since but perennially exhausted by meme jokes taking trans men who pass and look very 'male' and saying "oh so this is who you're calling a girl" like this shit doesn't just reinforce transphobia. actually it's also bad to misgender trans men when they look just like women. it's bad to misgender trans women when they look just like men. it's bad to condition acceptance of trans people on 'but what about the ones who pass? what then, you'll feel real silly!' like no they won't, they'll do more violence about it, while you're too busy implying those of us who don't pass deserve it

Didn't want to derail this post about going through TSA while trans with my own anecdote but. One time I went through their stupid machine and it alerted regarding some part of my anatomy and the TSA guy asked me "Did I push the wrong button?"
Well. I didn't know what button he pushed (there was no way for me to see). And I'm usually kind of nervous and extra polite/friendly in these sorts of situations as a defense mechanism. But I'm also not great at coddling stupid questions. So I said "I don't know. Did you?"
And he stared at me for a moment. He asked "May I?" Then he gently put a hand against my tits as though giving them a benediction and let me go through.

sorry, but isn't it difficult to claim with certainty that one group of trans people is certainly and unequivocally targeted more by violence when a central factor in the oppression of other trans people is invisibility? like, take Malte from germany, a trans man who died in a transphobic attack recently. practically every newspaper that reported on the incident misgendered him after his death, meaning it'd be impossible to know the truth if one were to only follow those sources. it's hard to pin trans oppression down pat specifically because of how it works is what I'm saying
There are things that are hard to measure, yes. But when we can observe that trans women, trans men and non-binary people are all being misgendered in the media after becoming victims of transphobic violence, and yet of the murders that we end up knowing about the ratio of trans women to trans men is literally around 50 to 1, there is no doubt about who is getting murdered more.
If you had some very good reason why trans men might be getting misgendered more in these situations, you could argue whether the true ratio might be 40 to 1, or maybe even 30 to 1, but there is no doubt at all that trans women face far far faaaaar higher numbers of deadly violence.
To look at a difference that big and go 'well, can we ever really know all the data?' isn't valid scientific scepticism, it's ignoring the extremely obvious conclusions in the data to allow yourself to cling to a preferred reality in which you can believe what you want to believe.

So, I just found the most amazing, yet simultaneously heartbreaking thing I've seen all week.
You would think this site, https://www.governorgregabbott.com/, would be the Texan Governor Greg Abbot's official site detailing his career and why you should vote for him, correct?
Wrong.
This site, created by Toby Morton (it clearly states it on the site), is a parody made to highlight how much of a shitty legislator and governor Greg Abbot is.
And I am all for it.
CONTENT WARNING FOR MENTIONS OF SUICIDE/SELF HARM, TRANS- & HOMOPHOBIA, GUN VIOLENCE, AND OTHER GENERAL SHITTY CONSERVATIVE VIEWPOINTS. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Tumblr media
Need some examples of why this site needs to exist?
How about Greg Abbot's Conservative views on Trans folk?
Or, maybe, perhaps, the issue of guns!
Tumblr media
Or, or, how about the issue of infrastructure over the Texas Power Grid?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Phew, that's a lot to unpack. This Greg Abbot guy doesn't seem so great, now, does he?
Oh, but it gets even better!
Tumblr media
Long story short, this site is amazing. We NEED people like Toby Morton out there doing things like this, doing the public a FAVOR by showcasing the dark sides of people in politics! Because we all know, they're not going to do it themselves!
PLEASE, go support Toby Morton and his work, and if you can, spread this (and all the other sites he's made) around to spread awareness of just how fucked of a politician Greg Abbot is!
He's also done Tennessee Governor Bill Lee (Hey, look, my governor!), Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (Won't link the site because apparently someone infected it with malware), Tennessee Congressman Andy Ogles, ANOTHER Tennesseean, this time Speaker Cameron Sexton (Wow, I'm sensing a pattern here, isn't that right?)
(And one last thing. Just to dispel anyone claiming that I'm doxxing Toby by making this, remember how I said his name is clearly listed on the site?)
