hey I respect you a lot which is why I’m reaching out to you about this. Maybe you’re just unaware, but a LOT of the protesters are not just “breaking into buildings”. They are harassing, attacking, and calling for the genocide of Jewish people. Do you think there shouldn’t be protection for Jewish students? I’m concerned that we’ve reached a point where all protests are becoming acceptable, and the rhetoric of that post you reblogged is only normalizing violence. It claims that it doesn’t support state-sanctioned violence, but clearly accepts violence from protestors, which is proving to be increasingly dangerous to Jewish people on and off campuses. I recommend you take a closer look into what’s really happening at these protests. You have to consider if you’d find the same actions acceptable from a cause you do not support. And if you do, maybe you should examine why you think violence and hate speech is acceptable. You don’t have to publicly respond to this ask, I just want you to consider these things.
Tumblr media
my very basic interpretation of this post (i’m a blogger not an epistemologist) is that police brutality/negligence is unacceptable. do i think violence and hate speech are acceptable? also no.
but this is a very relevant topic, because today is May 4th, the 54th anniversary of the Kent State Shooting: police shot live ammunition into a crowd of college students protesting the Vietnam War, killing four people and injuring nine.
not the same situation at all, but all the same - i would never support state sanctioned violence against people protesting a genocide. that isn’t a controversial statement to me…. i would never support state sanctioned violence against ANYONE! i would also never support violence or hate speech against anyone! why should i have to surrender either of these beliefs?

I had to attend active shooter training today because I live in a very normal and healthy country.
Most of the presentation was fearmongering and stressing the importance of taking initiative and something something good guy with a gun. I’m not at all surprised that a presentation designed and presented by the police department really wants to make sure that civilians know that they’re constantly in danger but also that they are personally responsible for their safety during a crisis.

Today marks the anniversary of the Dunblane Massacre, the deadliest mass shooting in British history, which happened on 13th March 1996 in Dunblane near Stirling.
Thomas Hamilton walked into a school with four weapons and killed 17 people - one teacher and 16 children who were about to start PE class in the assembly hall.
The aftermath resulted in the Firearms (Amendment) Act in 1997 which brought in stricter gun control.
For those who've followed this blog for a while, I've mentioned before that my nursery teacher was one of the mothers who lost their child that day. I obviously didn't know it at the time, but I've thought about it ever since I learned that about her. I have never been able to find the words to describe the strength she had in order to surround herself with children that were around the same age as her daughter.

(cw: Lewiston Maine shootings)
**FYI as of 4:48pm EST the shooter has NOT been apprehended**
so I live about 30 mins from the shootings - in rural speak, that's closer than my daily commute. we had a shelter in place order all last night to this morning. heard a helicopter earlier and just burst into tears for 2 minutes after a night of little sleep. I have customers who live in that area. one of my coworkers (who is safe) lives in Lewiston.
if one more person tells me it's fine, you're safe, you're far away etc I'm gonna flip out. I'm (largely) not worried about myself, I'm worried about everyone else.
sorry for the ramble. this just sucks.

Existential thoughts:
content warning: mass shooting
Today, there was a shooting less than 10 blocks from my workplace. Literally, the shooter was on 23rd, and I work on 14th.
I never had to think about some of the things I had to think about today.
What would happen if some bastard opened fire right as I came around the corner to grab some Rice-A-Roni for a Pickup/Delivery order, and I, or someone I cared about, got shot?
Who would I take a bullet for? Would I take a bullet for Freaking Angelina, who gets on my nerves just as terribly as I get on hers? Would I run, like a coward, or would I try to fight, saving people I care about, and perhaps dying in the process?
If I died a hero, would that maybe make up for the fact that I'm a fucking dyke in the eyes of God and maybe there would be a place for me in heaven, or would I still burn for eternity? Would anyone remember me? Would anyone care?
Who would escape? Certainly not Sherri, in the meat department. She's elderly, and her knees are weak. What about Brittany, in floral? She's exposed, out in the open, and the slowest damn runner you've ever met. Or Kara, in Bakery? She's shut in, with no way of escape if the shooter comes into her department. What about David, at Customer Service? He's even more exposed than Brittany is.
What if someone else took a bullet for me? Would I be able to keep going and move on with my life, or would the image seared into my eyelids of my beloved coworker's blood splattered across the front of the deli case be so strong that I'd make it a week before taking my own life? Would anyone even care enough to step between me and a shooter? Would I let them?
Where could we hide? Certainly not in the Drive Up and Go, it's far too exposed. The floral supply closet? Too small. Only about 10 or so people would fit. The breakroom? Not unless you want to be trampled on the stairs. Who would run, who would hide, and who would fight. I should hope I'd be in the third category.
No one should have to live like this.

Today marks 12 years since the mass shooting on Utøya in Norway, where right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik killed 69 people, mostly teenagers. And I can't help but think about how one of the guys Breivik cited in his manifesto now sits as speaker of the parliament here in Finland. The world is fucked up.

another mass shooting. but this time people took fucking video of the victim's bodies. Maybe for once we can get the NRA gun-toting fucknuggets to actually face the consequences of their "beliefs"

Sorry my last ask was so broad. May I ask for your thoughts on the things happening in US politics at the moment? Like the Texas Judge ruling that the abortion pill is “unsafe” even though the data which shows it to be less dangerous than Tylenol/Acetaminophen and banning it nationally. and abortion rights in general for many Americans.
Or the legislation being proposed that affect to LGBT community, which is a broad topic on its own.
Or the 148 mass shootings the US has had in the first 100 days of 2023 (just today there have been 2 more)
I'm sorry these are some heavy topics. I don't expect you to respond to all of these. Thank you for reading this. Hope you have a lovely day :)

Oops think your ask doubled up for some weird reason. To get it out of the way, I have never been to America. My thoughts on each of those topics are pretty much the same whether I'm talking about America or not. Guns are quite an American issue which I'll jot down some thoughts. I'm pro-choice, pro-equality and pro-gun control. In my opinion, unsafe abortion only happens when people don't have access to safe and legal abortions. Banning abortions or banning morning-after pills does nothing but increase unsafe abortions. To anyone who doesn't support abortion, that is absolutely fine, just don't have one. But don't dictate what someone else can do. Any anti-LGBT legislation is inherently evil. No excuses. Mass shootings are incredibly frustrating from a outsider's perspective. We only really get 'the big ones' reported in our news, and this has a number of issues. For some backstory, my nursery teacher was the mother of one of the children killed in the Dunblane massacre - the deadliest mass shooting in British history where a gunman killed 16 kids and a teacher before he killed himself. I learned about it super young and was always amazed she spent all her time teaching children who were roughly the same age her daughter was. And I hate that I have to write that, because after every single mass shooting, there's a viral twitter post from some UK liberal twat who just want clicks who rhymes off the Dunblane massacre as some sort of gotcha. I remember when Sandy Hook happened, and was young and ignorant enough at the time that I expected that was *the one* - that was America's Dunblane massacre and that would really change things. Now I'm just sad and tired, and a little bit ashamed that whenever I hear about a mass shooting on the news that my reaction is just "Oh, that's a tragedy" and then carry on with my day. They are so frequent, and the reaction after each one is so poor that I can't mentally invest in each one. I'm a bit more pragmatic than the non-Americans who comment saying that America should just confiscate all guns. I know that that won't happen, but I do think there should be stricter regulation for owning one.
Super heavy topics - super heavy answers. Hope that's what you were looking for.
