Have been on a quest to better understand insect mouthparts, here're breakdowns I did on mantis, but a lot of the basic structure applies to most insects with chewing mouthparts
Here's also a very nice video that covers all adaptations and names all the individual parts:
For those of you who enjoyed my last post about my roommate's previous mantis, here is an update on a new one she has. Her name is Princess Greenbean and we took her to see Santa today as well as did a photo shoot of her outside on my plants
New character!! This is Spike, they’re a scene kid who loves knitting and art! I struggle with using bright colors a lot, but I really like how I did this one! I also like how I made the side bangs using leaves, I don’t like hair on my anthro designs, but I feel like they would be empty without the classic scene kid hair.
One of the best insect underside photos I've seen and it's so fucking hot cool woaahh
That actually is so excellent to get a better hang on the different textures of chitin and how soft it can be when less sclerotized, it looks like soft leather and even folds along the joints?? So dope
Today I unfortunately had to say goodbye to my desk buddy Daffodil, she lived to be about 15 months old. Definitely the longest living mantis I've ever kept. She often seemed to be quite interested in watching what I was doing on my computer, which I always found quite charming. She was one of the most aggressive mantids I've ever seen towards food, yet ironically she had terrible aim!
I thought I'd include some pictures from a Daffodil photoshoot my good friend helped with that I don't think I ever shared.
Shinshin is now a fully-fledged adult! Just look at her wings! She can barely fit on the kawoshin figure anymore, I can't believe she used to be so little... Old photo sessions here: 111, 222, 333 & rainbow
Warning! A close-up video of her mouthparts below may look spooky to some! (and mesmerizing to watch to others ^^)
And here's a size comparison with my hand :') just a 7 month difference
