Had the misfortune of walking through almost an hour of a friend's homophobic, misandrist, transphobic and traditionalist rant yesterday, but where I wanna focus is the absolutely insane example he gave me to explain the classic "trans women aren't real women because they don't have wombs" TERF spiel.

Namely, that he can "buy Ghost's (of COD: MW fame) uniform, learn all his moves, but he still won't be the real Ghost" and that "Batman and Iron Man aren't real superheroes because they don't have powers, just the crapload of money to compensate"

man i really need to like... write up a post about the undercurrents of queerphobia going on with how five is written, mostly aro/homophobia and transphobia. tbh i think i'm going to make separate posts for the two, for a few reasons; one of them is that the transphobia part delves a lot into the reading of the mogadorians' narrative as a metaphor for radfem BS, and that one's gonna take some deep dives into several other characters as well as straight up the series as a whole. it also runs through Major Central Themes for five himself, so there's that.

the aro/homophobia, though... i'm not really sure what to make of the fact that it's there, given that he otherwise doesn't seem like they're trying to portray him as a gay stereotype. and who knows how intentional it is; i get the feeling they didn't exactly sit down and rub their hands together about Time to Write a Malicious Depiction of a Gay/Aro Kid--especially since i doubt they knew what aro even was--but conscious or not i feel like both of those things were a factor in the resulting background radiation. but there are a lot of things, most of them small ones, that start to form a picture when you put them together, and some of them stick out more than others in ways that feel weirdly pointed.

anyway that's going to be interesting to go into, but for starters his backstory involves scaring off a guy harassing him on the street who was about to beat him up after calling him a homophobic slur, so lmao

This is for you, not for you to post. I saw your tags and here’s a the bottom line: young girls who have never experienced homophobia (but have grown up in a sexist culture) claim to be “queer men”. It’s offensive to gay men, because they have had the words “fag” and “queer” thrown at them along with stones. They are bullied from childhood. They struggle and eventually are proud to be gay. But the experience of growing up gay, of their struggle, is dismissed by younger women. When these men say “I get that you romanticize us and like us, but my history, reality, and future is different than the stories you read. Please don’t claim to be the same as me” young women who are “liberal” like to respond with hate, they call them terfs, they send death threats (no matter how much they mean it it hurts), and continue to fight for THEIR (young women) right in gay spaces. It’s homophobic because they tell gay men “your opinion doesn’t matter” and then act like their feelings are superior to a gay man’s feelings, about gay spaces. The same is true in reverse for lesbians and men who want access to those worlds and areas. If someone is identifying as “queer” they’re saying “I’m not gay but I want to included in gay spaces”. When someone says “any pronouns” they’re saying “I want to be included in the cool kids group and I don’t care that gay men and women have been judged for not adhering to stereotypes and have worked hard to reduce the stigmas of pronouns”. Young women have been hated on by the world and they’re rightfully angry and they don’t want to be the stereotype that the world says is an ideal woman. But when you befriend lesbians and gay men, they’ll show you there’s no wrong way to be a man, that there are no rules for how to be a woman. You’re a woman as you are. No nazi surgery required. No gatekeeping of spaces that aren’t yours required. So, all the young people crying about being “persecuted” for TIKTOK views and tumblr followers are not “liberal”. Their outcry has nothing to do with gay rights.

You sat with the rest of the 118 at the table in the firehouse and you could practically hear all of their hearts racing as you all awaited your new captain’s arrival. You hadn’t had the displeasure of meeting Gerrard beforehand, but according to Hen and Chimney, the guy was a real piece of work. He didn’t seem to like anyone who wasn’t a straight white man and you were ready to stand up for anyone whoever you had to. 

Eddie turned to you as he sipped on his coffee, not even having to ask what was going through your head. He knew that you could hold your own just fine, but he knew that he couldn’t just let Gerrard treat you like shit if he had something to say. Eddie was normally very respectful to whoever was in charge, but when it came to the people he loved, he couldn’t just stand by and watch. 

He was more afraid though, of what you were going to do if you were a target. You may have been the youngest of the team and everyone may have been protective of you for exactly that reason, but that didn’t mean that you couldn’t hold your own. Eddie had seen you punch men for being too handsy with you at the bar and he knew that if it came down to it, you’d have no problem hitting Gerrard as well. 

Feeling his eyes on you, you turned to Eddie, putting on a warm smile. You could see that crease between his eyebrows that signified that it was thinking hard. Thinking hard about you. He was always worrying about you even though you kept telling him that he didn’t have to. Even though you secretly liked it. 

“Don’t worry, Diaz,” you gave his cheek a light pat. “I’ll be on my best behavior.” He gave you a look in return that you knew all too well. The one that told you that he didn’t believe you in the slightest. You rested your hands on his cheeks and pulled his face to yours, pressing your lips to his in a brief kiss. 

You heard someone clear their throat from behind you and noticed that everyone was standing for their chairs, looking like they just saw a ghost. You turned to where they were giving their attention and a man was standing right behind yours and Eddie’s seats, staring down at you with a skeptical look. 

“So sorry, sir!” Eddie apologized, standing from the table, pulling you up with him. “I’m Edmundo,” he said in a panic. He almost never introduced himself with his full first name, but Gerrard made him nervous. 

More nervous than he’d ever admit. Bobby was someone that Eddie had gotten really comfortable around and now that he was no longer the captain, he was having to start at square one. 

You reached for his hand and gave him a squeeze, knowing that you were going to speak for the both of you, but that didn’t bother you. You would have done anything for Eddie, especially if I was standing up to a racist, homophobic man. It didn’t matter if he was your boss no one was going to treat your family like shit. Especially not Gerrard. 

“I’m y/n,” you put your hand out to shake and Gerrard just looked at it then back up at you, not even bothering to pull his hands out from behind his back. Well, that was definitely off to a great start. 

Gerrard looked around the station, his eyes locking onto every single person, some he recognized, but most he didn’t. He knew Chimney and Hen, but the rest were a total mystery, a big fat question mark and that concerned him. 

Nonetheless, he was going to make you all fall in line. He knew how Bobby worked and there was absolutely not going to be any funny business anymore. Gerrard thought Bobby let his emotions get in the way by forming bonds with his employees. And there was absolutely no way he was doing that. You all were going to treat him with nothing but respect. 

“I am your captain, Vincent Gerrard and I’m just going to start off by saying that I am not here to be your friend.” Well, that much was obvious. “I am here to be your captain and your captain only. If you’re looking for a shoulder to cry on or a hug when a call is particularly difficult, you can go to Captain Nash.” 

This man has barely said anything and you were already starting to hate him. You had heard a lot about the guy from others in the department and now you were really seeing his true colors. How was he actually worse than what Chim and Hen had described?

You wanted to say something but then remembered your promise to Eddie. So, you bit your tongue and squeezed Eddie’s hand that you were still holding instead. You weren’t even aware that you were hurting him until you heard him wince and immediately let go. You turned to him, watching him rub his hand as he listened to whatever Gerrard was saying. You didn’t want to hear what he was saying, though. You didn’t give a single fuck. 

You stepped closer to Eddie and took his hand on yours, pressing a kiss to the skin, mumbling and apology as you did so. Gerrard’s speech was cut off as he stared at the two of you giggling. Yeah, he was going to have to nip that in the bud as soon as possible. 

“Are you two together?” He asked and you both turned to look at him. 

“Yes,” you responded, already not liking where the conversation was going. 

“Then you should probably know that romantic relationships between two firefighters in the same firehouse is forbidden.” He seemed a little too happy to have been relaying that information to you. 

“Says who?” You asked, stepping forward and Eddie had to pull you back. He wasn’t going to let you get in even more trouble for punching Gerrard like he knew you really wanted to. 

“The state of California,” Gerrard replied, crossing his arms over his chest, speaking in a “that’s final” kind of tone. The two of you had been together for months and no one had said anything, not even Bobby. No, he didn’t follow all of the rules, but that was definitely one that he would have. 

“And what would happen if we don’t break up?” You asked, crossing your own arms over your chest. 

“Then I’d have choice but to transfer one or both of you.”

“Well I’d transfer first because working under you is already proving to be hell.” Everyone froze when the words left your mouth. They all had their own thoughts about Gerrard, but none of them seemed to want to stand up to him. None of them except for you, of course. 

“Well that’s not very nice is it?” He replied. “I bet you don’t talk to Captain Nash like that, do you?” 

“No, I don’t. But Captain Nash isn’t a dick.” You heard gasps from the rest of the 118 and immediately regretted what you had said. Your opinion still stood, but maybe you should have said it differently. You were so used to speaking your mind that you weren’t even thinking about the fact that the man was your captain. 

“I see,” Gerrard nodded like he had everything figured out. “Considering that nobody has corrected you for your very obvious error, I’m going to assume that you’re very well liked here.” Everyone did like you, but you wouldn’t have said that you were popular. And the other were quick to correct you when you did something they didn’t agree with, but you assumed that they were just too stunned to say anything.

“Well-“ 

“That wasn’t a question. It’s very clear. You seem to be popular, clearly with the opposite sex,” he referred to Eddie who was already angry for how you were being spoken to, but it was as if something had broken in him. Now he was seeing red. 

No one talked to his girl like that. Not even his boss. Sure, Eddie could be a kissass sometimes, but not right now. He was going to stand up for you no matter how much it scared him. You were his girlfriend and clearly Gerrard was in the wrong. Sure, maybe what you had said was out of line, but he had started it. At that point, you were just defending yourself. 

Eddie stood in front of you, trying to put some space between you and the new captain, pushing you further behind himself so he could act as a metaphorical shield. He stared Gerrard down, daring him to say something as rude as the things he had said to you. 

“You may have been able to get away with speaking to your employees like that a few years ago,” Eddie spoke. “But that ends now. As long as I’m here, you will treat us with respect, but yours? That has to be earned. Another out of line comment and I won’t hesitate to speak to the higher ups about your inappropriate behavior.” 

Gerrard was silent after that. He had never been rendered speechless like that and not one of his employees had been so bold as to have spoken like that to his face. He had scared them, made them want to earn his respect.

You all watch him head to the office and close the door behind him. As soon as he was out of earshot, the rest of the 118 rushed over to the two of you as Eddie pulled you into his arms. They all pat him on the back, congratulating him for what he had done. Who would have thought that it would have been Eddie to be the one to stand up to Gerrard. He supposed that it was because of you. He’d do anything for his girl.

Can you imagine someone who is completely useless at everything they do? There's no such thing as good grades, good looks, popularity, or even a good personality. He was a complete shit and he knew it.

It was just another day of him going to school, doing assignments that most of the time the teacher would point out were wrong just to embarrass him in front of the class or that the handwriting was illegible, talking to his pathetic friends just like him, buying something in the canteen and sitting on the benches to eat and look around judging the people.

It was Thursday so it was more crowded than the other days, some familiar faces and others not so much, but someone on the other side of the courtyard surprised him.

A girl with h/c hair and e/c eyes, a pretty face, and a sexy body.

He wondered how someone as beautiful and charming as that could exist. Were you new to the school or did he just not notice you before?

"Hi, Gigi! You good?" Noticing her face made you worried. "What's wrong?"

"Well, do you know about some guy who texted you yesterday?"

It's been a few weeks since he had the courage and ask you to talk. Every day you exchanged greetings and had long talks that were mostly started by him. You tried to find him attractive or like his personality but nothing worked. Maybe because you already knew his intentions?

But there's something that has been bothering you. Maybe it's just your mind trying to delude you but you swear that someone's stalking you.

And your instinct is telling you that's him even though you don't have proof. You did see a lot of pictures of you on his phone but didn't think he would start to follow you on your way home.

So today you're gonna find out if it's him or not!

You made your usual way home, but you diverted your path to another street that had more shops. Your stalker follows behind you, his face all covered by a stupid black mask and sunglasses.

Maybe you should enter the first shop that you see to know if he would enter too?

Without wasting time, you run into a lingerie store and try to hide further into the store. The stranger only realized the type of store when he put one foot inside, his covered face flushed with embarrassment, and then decided to wait for you outside.

'Damnit! He didn't enter?!' Your thoughts were pure anger and disappointment but vanished when some lady came asking for what type of lingerie you were searching for. Then you got why he didn't.

'NO. NO. NO. NO. JUST NO. DON'T TELL ME SHE'S BUYING LINGERIE TO USE WITH SOMEONE ELSE! SHE SAID SHE HAD NO BOYFRIEND. BUT WHAT IF SHE'S SEEING SOMEONE?!?' He started hyperventilating and his disguise was only making his breathing worse.

After waiting 5 minutes, you come out with a bag in your hands and then speed up your walk. He couldn't lose you from his sight. In his point of view, he was protecting you.

You surely have been running fast, are you embarrassed by someone seeing you in this type of store?

A week has passed since the incident, and he hasn't gone to school, much less left the house. He didn't dare to even see you. Your disgusted face was already haunting him but there's something that he didn't notice before.

What did you mean by that? Did your friends tell you about him or something? His phone was getting many notifications, then he decided to pick it up.

A party? Seriously? He wasn't in the mood for this, but locking himself in his home isn't going to make anything better.

He hopes that you go too so he can apologize for his past behavior.

You were relieved, there was no sight of him in school. Mostly like he was who was hiding and not you. You didn't know if he ever felt sorry, after all, you blocked him from everything leaving him with no opportunity to speak and you didn't see him everywhere. Thanks God.

But nothing more than a wonderful party to raise your mood.

I agree there was probably never a meeting where commentators or wrestlers were told "don't you dare talk about this on air" but I think it's overly optimistic and frankly pretty naive to think that this lack of direction and clarity is purposeful, and occurring with the ultimate goal of giving the fans a satisfying story (queer or otherwise). I don't think aew has done anything to deserve that level of trust in their storytelling or treatment of queer characters/stories.

GL fans are frustrated because Tony Khan had the opportunity of a golden lovers reunion for the first time in years and instead of booking a story about them he decided to just have Kota show up in the middle of a huge multi-man gimmick match where the story wasn't even that Kota was there. If you took Kota out of that match, nothing would be different, the story would be the same, because the golden lovers were unimportant to it. The moment of their reunion was made unimportant by the way the reunion was booked. And that was a choice that AEW made.

And if you think that's how "it's always been done" if you think that's what the GL "slow drip" looks like, you clearly weren't a fan during their last reunion. A slowburn isn't commentators failing to call them by their team name or leave any room for romantic interpretations of their relationship. That's just the homophobia of old straight guys who are uncomfortable calling two men "lovers".

People love the golden lovers because they're a perfect example of excellent long-term wrestling storytelling and a beautiful story about queer love. It's always been both. If AEW can't deliver those things, then that's a problem with AEW, not with the supposed incompatibility of "good lgbtq representation" and "classic long-term wrestling storytelling" lmao

I've seen a lot of stupid wrestling takes in my day, but "AEW is too homophobic to acknowledge the Golden Lovers subtext, but is somehow powerless to stop Don Callis from bringing it up on commentary in every single Golden Lovers match" is way, way up there.

Shenhe never understood why you'd be anxious about her meeting your parents. After all everything went so well with her mom she didn't think there could be a problem.

Truth is, you never told your family about dating a woman, and you had no clue how they'd react.

Now that you think about it maybe it would've been better if you told your parents about it... At least you would've known where you stand instead of worrying about their reaction.

At least you could've cancelled it before it was too late.

Still, there was no use getting worried about it now. You were on your way and felt beyond anxious.

Noticing that, Shenhe held your hand in attempt to comfort you. It wasn't exactly helping in of itself, but it's the thought that counts.

When the big reveal came you felt awful when you saw the look of disapproval on your parents' faces. Nobody said a thing, but you knew already that they're going to talk later.

The atmosphere was hostile, they were being passive aggressive- honestly you'd prefer if they just kicked you out on the spot but for some twisted reason they kept it going.

Shenhe chose to ignore their provocations and despite everything she managed to turn the conversation quite well...

You were actually impressed on how her blunt nature fixed the hostility. What you thought will be a nightmare turned into a pleasant evening.

Of course Shenhe somehow having a pleasant conversation with your parents didn't automatically mean they accepted you being with a woman. Before you left they had a little chat with you about that and they made it clear that they still don't approve of you.

You avoided the topic altogether with them, ignoring whatever they were trying to stir between you and her. You pretended like she didn't exist- rather than she was a friend whenever your family wanted to bait you into talking about her.

That gave them hope that you broke up. But you didn't. And one time as you mentioned it to Shenhe's mom, Xianyun was furious.

She wished to go to your parents herself and give them a piece of her mind. But, she didn't do that.

Instead she had a talk with her daughter. She believed it wasn't an issue she should get involved in (yet.) and that it was up to Shenhe to make things right.

But before she even attempted to even think about her mother's elaborate plan she talked to you. Basically asking about how you feel about all this.

It was a bit awkward conversation, but one important to be had. She knew now just how much your parents' behavior hurt you, and she wasn't going to let that continue.

Without your knowledge she talked to them herself. She was determined and stood her ground for the both of you. And... She was as convincing as she was threatening.

Did it make your parents accept it? For now, absolutely not. But at the very least you wouldn't have to worry about their comments or subtle requests that you change yourself.

Maybe one day, things will change and your relationship with your parents will get better, no matter what though you absolutely can count on Shenhe whenever you need her.

a/n... It makes me so happy to hear how much you love my writing! I've been trying to figure out how to write this for a while bc I was just so nervous but it was strangely easy and I reallyyy enjoyed writing this one!!

You and Abby were nestled in the corner of the small local coffee shop only a few minutes from your shared apartment. It was a weekly thing, a little evening date where the two of you could just relax and talk, a break between your busy schedules.

Abby had been holding your hand from across the table, gently running her thumb along your smooth skin as you talked. She was too caught up in the way your eyes sparkled and how your silky voice traveled through her ears to notice what had grabbed your attention a few minutes beforehand. The strange woman who had sat perfectly across the cafe, and the way she'd been eyeing you and your girlfriend the moment the two of you entered hand in hand. Sending you dirty looks, knowing you were looking right back.

Usually, you'd ignore the homophobic looks or even comments you'd get towards your relationship, but today felt different, something snapped, and you quickly moved to Abby's side of the booth, barely breaking eye contact with the lady.

Abby seemed a little confused, letting out a small "You okay?" as you pushed yourself against her side, and her confusion only grew when you quickly grabbed her hand and brought it to your thigh. This wasn't abnormal, but it also wasn't something you usually initiated, let alone in a public space. She wasn't one to complain though, as continued drawing small circles with her thumb into the plush of your thigh.

That worked for a bit. The lady seemed to go back to her work, ignoring the slight pda you had started just to piss her off a little. Everything went back to normal until you looked back up a few minutes later to see her staring once again. This time though, her stare held pure hatred, one so strong that made you shiver a little bit under her gaze.

Something in you told you to keep going, to go further with your actions. And so you did, you hushed Abby before she could even say anything as you inched her hand up to gently cup your mound. "What's all this sweetheart?" She mumbled in your ear, sending more heat down to your core. The way her warm breath hit your ear, combined with the risky feeling of doing something so raunchy in public made you wetter than ever.

Whining out a small, "Don't worry about it, Abs. At this point, she was far forgotten, the only thing on your mind being Abby, Abby, Abby as you felt yourself soak through your jeans and right into the palm of her hand.

You laid your head against her broad shoulder, looking up into her eyes for the first time since you started this whole thing. "Home, please." was all you could get out, still working on catching your breath.

"Of course, princess" Was her only response, as she helped you stand on your, now weak and slightly wobbly, legs and walked you to the car. Abby quickly buckled you in before speeding home to get you cleaned up. and an explanation.

By the time you were back home, sitting on the bathroom counter with Abby gently cleaning between your legs like she always insisted, you were exhausted. Something about it being so public took a lot out of you, and you were fighting sleep at your girlfriend's soft and gentle touches.

"So," Abby began, "wanna tell me what that was about?" She had finished cleaning you up, now just holding your face up to keep your eyes on her. "That wasn't like you at all."

Your words came out in the form of a whine, sleep laced in each breath you took. So Eddie’s maybe been laying it on a little thick.

That’s his excuse, anyway.

It’s just – it’s possible he’s gotten a little carried away; while the idea had been for him to accompany Steve for moral support to the annual three days of torture that are his visits home for Christmas, Eddie’s priorities had shifted a little with the last phone call he’d overheard Steve taking from his mom.

Something-something-I hope you’ve found someone to bring home with you, Steven-something-something-your cousin already has a baby on the way-something-something-such a disappointment to see you alone, Steven-something-something.

Steve had looked so small and sad after talking to her, the way he always does after talking to her, and Eddie wishes his parents’ approval (or lack thereof) didn’t hold such a sway over Steve, not when they don’t deserve that kind of respect, but he also gets it – family is complicated. So instead, Eddie offers Steve a way to shove his parents’ faces in it.

Instead of showing up in a strictly platonic, friendly-like capacity, he offers to play Steve’s boyfriend for the holiday.

And since Steve is the same brand of crazy as Eddie (even if he buries it better), he accepts.

So from the moment they pull up in front of the Harrington house the morning of December twenty-fourth, Eddie plays the doting boyfriend to a tee. He holds Steve’s hand, he kisses him on the cheek, he snuggles up to him on the sofa; he plays nice with Steve’s homophobic grandfather, and is only a little snarky with Steve’s patronizing uncle, and talks Steve up every chance he gets.

So yes, he’s laying it on a little thick, but Steve’s family should think he has a partner who adores him.

Because Steve deserves a partner who adores him.

(Because Eddie does adore him. Which is – well, that’s probably part of the problem.)

It doesn’t work as well as Eddie had hoped it would, in the end. Steve’s family can’t fault him for being “pathetically single” anymore, but they can pick him apart in literally every other respect – and they do.

He takes it like a pro, letting the nasty, pointed comments roll off him, smooth and brittle as glass, never causing a scene or biting back, because it’s Christmas and apparently this is just how they celebrate.

(They mostly ignore Eddie, acting like he’s beneath them, which has Steve sending apologetic glances his way the whole day, like Eddie is the one who needs an apology when Steve is the one being vivisected by his family.)

Steve just holds in whatever he’s feeling until they’ve retired for the night, up in the guest room that used to be his room, that his mom had apparently barely waited until he’d moved out to start converting.

He holds it in and holds it in until the door shuts behind them and he all but collapses on the edge of the bed, crumpling in on himself like the ugly plaid duvet is crumpling underneath him, with his shoulders curved in and his face covered and his chest heaving with what are maybe supposed to be calming, deep breaths but are definitely not working, because the stress is still coming off him in waves.

And like Eddie said: he’s maybe gotten a little carried away with his role, but it just feels completely normal to go right to Steve, to curl his arms around him and pull him in close and remind him that his family’s opinions aren’t worth shit and that Steve is so good, and–

And when Steve uncovers his face, a little blotchy and pulling tight with the effort not to let any tears flow free, it just feels completely normal to press a kiss to his cheek, and another to the corner of his mouth, and another to his lips, all in quick succession, all soft and reverent and reassuring.

Eddie freezes the moment he’s pulled back. The moment he realizes what he’s just done.

“Eddie,” Steve murmurs into the still air between them, “there’s… no one watching right now.”

You don’t have to do this, he means.

“I–” Eddie’s voice gets caught up in his throat, because his brain is screaming at him to play it off, to tell Steve that he just got carried away, got too into the role – but his heart, noisy fucker that it is, has different ideas. “I… maybe haven’t been faking as much as I said I was. Or, like– at all.”

“Oh, thank god,” Steve breathes, and then he’s pushing back in for another kiss, his mouth eager and warm and perfect against Eddie’s.

And the next two days aren’t going to be any less stressful, spent around a flock of hungry vultures masquerading as people, but Eddie figures that if nothing else, at least one good thing will have come from the holiday.

He tilts his head to deepen the kiss and Steve opens up beneath him, anticipating him like they’ve been doing this for ages, and – yeah, Eddie decides.

One very, very good thing.
