An Introduction to Metal Stamping: Design

The metal stamping industry plays an indispensable role in today's society. It plays an essential role in everyday life, and in industrial activities as well. Metal Stamping Service are used in virtually every field, including home appliances, automobiles, electronic products, and mechanical equipment. Therefore, the design of metal stamping parts can be regarded as the foundation of the foundation, and its importance cannot be overstated. It is important to consider several factors when designing metal stamping parts to achieve optimal functionality and production efficiency. This guide will provide you with information on some of the most important factors.
Selection of materials
When preparing a project, choosing the right metal material is the first step in designing metal stamping parts. There is another guide: A Guide to Metal Stamping: Materials that discusses how this process affects not only the performance and quality of the final product but also the efficiency and cost control of the production process.
Shape and size of the part
Metal stamping parts are designed with specific shapes and sizes in mind. The shape complexity of the parts directly affects the stamping process' feasibility and difficulty.
The production cycle and cost of stamping may increase if shapes are too complex, and scrap rates may increase as well. Shapes with sharp internal angles or deep and narrow grooves, for example, are more prone to cracking and stress concentration during stamping.
Too large a size may exceed the processing capacity of stamping equipment, or require special large molds, which increases the investment cost. Too small a size may require very high accuracy, which makes processing and measuring problematic.
Moreover, the part size ratio must also be carefully considered. Too long a cantilever structure, too thin a wall, or too large an aspect ratio can affect the part's strength and stability, causing it to deform or fail during stamping.
We should also pay attention to the requirements of dimensional tolerance. Too tight tolerances can increase machining difficulty and cost, while too loose tolerances may make assembly or functionality impossible.
Processability of stamping
Stamping processability is a key consideration when designing metal stamping parts.
When it cannot be stamped at once, multiple processes not only increase costs and time, but also might affect the accuracy and consistency of the product's quality.
It is important to pay attention to the quality of the blanking edge, which should be smooth and burr-free so that subsequent trimming is minimal.
A drawing and bending process that is feasible is also crucial. The quality of the product will be affected by the flow characteristics and deformation uniformity of the material when stretched. For cracks or excessive thinning, the bending radius and angle should be chosen appropriately when bending.
For dimensional accuracy, it is essential to take into account the springback characteristics of the material and control the amount of springback through reasonable process parameters and mold design.
Material utilization and production efficiency are greatly impacted by layout. A well-designed layout will reduce waste and costs.
Die structure and life are also determined by the stamping process. Complex processes may require complex and expensive molds, while affecting the service life of the mold and increasing maintenance costs.
Design of dies
Die structural rationality directly affects the quality and production efficiency of metal stamping parts when they are designed. In order to prevent deviations that result in unqualified parts during the stamping process, the die guide device should be precise to ensure accurate alignment of the upper and lower dies.
It is also important to consider the life of the die during design. A reasonable structural design, an optimized heat treatment process, and the selection of high-quality materials can extend the production life of the die and reduce the production costs.
The convenience of mold maintenance can't be overlooked. Molds that are easy to disassemble, install, and maintain reduce downtime and increase productivity.
Please refer to another guide for more information about stamping dies: A Guide to Metal Stamping: Dies.
Requirements for precision
Designing metal stamping parts requires clear requirements for dimensional accuracy, which include how much deviation the basic dimensions can be, such as length, width, and thickness. In addition to increasing processing difficulty and cost, high accuracy requirements may not be able to meet assembly or functional requirements of a product if they are too low.
Shape and position accuracy can be divided into surface accuracy and surface accuracy can be divided into surface accuracy.
A good fit between stamped parts and other components as well as the overall performance of the product may not be possible without form and position accuracy such as flatness, verticality, roundness, etc.
The surface roughness requirements will affect the appearance and frictional properties of the stamped parts. For instance, certain surfaces that require a good sliding fit may need to have a lower roughness.
Additionally, the rebound and deformation during the stamping process can affect accuracy.
Cost of production
A metal stamping part's production cost is one of the most important factors in its design. This production cost comprises three main categories: materials, processing, and molds. For information on selecting materials and molds, see above.
Among the processing costs are the costs of stamping equipment, the cost of manual operation, and the efficiency of production.
Quantity of production
It is important to take into account the batch size when designing metal stamping parts. A mass production process usually involves the use of durable, high-precision, but higher-cost molds because the mold cost can be spread across a large number of products, reducing the mold cost per unit. Small batch production may opt for a mold with a simpler design, a lower price, but a shorter life.
The production volume will also affect the development of the process plan. In mass production, it is more inclined to use a high degree of automation and high efficiency continuous stamping process to improve production speed and reduce labor costs. Processes for small series production may be more flexible and easy to adjust.
Stiffness and strength
A stamping part's strength determines whether it can withstand loads without breaking or permanently deforming it when it is designed. It is important to select materials with adequate tensile, yield, and fatigue strength, taking into account the maximum load in the work. Stamping parts subject to dynamic loads, for example, require fatigue strength in order to avoid premature failure.
Stamping parts have a stiffness which relates to their ability to resist deformation under stress. If the stiffness is insufficient, it may lead to dimensional deviation, affect the assembly accuracy, and affect the stability and functioning of the entire structure. By increasing reinforcements and changing the cross-section shape of stamping parts, it is necessary to increase flexural stiffness and torsional rigidity during design.
The stamping process can also affect strength and stiffness of the material. Cold work hardening during stamping can improve strength, but excessive deformation can result in internal defects and reduce strength.

Strength and stiffness will also be affected by the connection mode. The design and process of a welded or riveted stamping part, for example, should ensure that the load is effectively transferred and that it does not become a weak point.
Requirements for assembly
When designing metal stamping parts, assembly requirements need to be taken into account. Fitting tolerances between the stamping part and other parts are crucial to the design. Coordination that is too loose may result in loosening, abnormal sounds, and even functional failure; tight fitting may result in increased assembly difficulty and even component damage. Get more info about metal stamping China.
In conclusion
Metal stamping parts are designed based on a number of factors, and this guide only covers the more general factors. It is also important to keep an eye out for future developments in technology, materials, and processes. By regularly reviewing and updating the project, metal stamping parts will always remain at the forefront of technology to better meet market demands despite these changes that may affect the existing design scheme. By using this guide, you can provide comprehensive information to assist in making more effective decisions and achieving the desired outcome for your metal project.

I made a few new wax seal stamps out of clay (like the ones I did for my worldbuilding stuff forever ago), this time just of random symbols that I thought might look good done in the style of painting over the raised part of the wax or etc. :0c Some of them aren't carved deep enough to really show up that well, but overall they worked okay for being clay lol
#wax seal#crafts#wax stamp#stationery#Window one is kind of stinky.. I was imagining like a swirly night sky sort of looking thing so it would be a surreal contrast of a night#sky with a window in the middle that shows a daytime sky - but the silver and purple wax kind of mixed too much together#with the black and it just looks very plain black and not all that starry or anything hjbhj.. Of course the eye is probably my favorite#since all I ever do is draw eyes and still like eye imagery for some reason. The four leaf clover is very lumpy and skrunkty but also it wa#the smallest in size out of all of them so was easier to do multiple stamps of just to try it out.#The heart with eyes wax is actually more swirly in person. I wanted it to be a mix of light pink and red and white. and the wax#did kind of all blend together but in person you can definitely see MORE of the intentional swirlyness. in this it just looks plain pink.#I was going to do one eye in the heart but it looked weird. but now two seems too plain. i could have done 3?? in a pattern.. hmm#alas. I wish I could make actual metal ones. With the clay i have to paint them in a thin layer of olive oil before stamping because#otherwise the wax just kind of gets stuck in the grooves of the clay and then you can't pull it up. Very wacky ''unprofessional'' looking#set up where I'm hot gluing circles of sculpey clay to short stumps of a wooden dowel that I sawed apart with a serrated bread knife#and then using an old paintbrush to put olive oil on them whilst holding a spoon over a yankee candle flame hjbjh#ANYWAY.. I think if I were middle class/rich/etc. this would be one of the main things in my crafting room is like.. SO many colors#of wax. and all different custom made stamps designed by me. which could be much more elaborate in actual metal.. muahaha.... >:)c#RHGghhh... I actually don't want to talk much about it since (this is probably just my Obsessed With My Own World Artist Delusions) I#think I have a really cool idea for a game that could genuinely be successful if i ever get to make it and I don't want to give#everything away and spoil the whole plot/concept in hopes that one day I can actually do it - BUT - a game that I'd like to make after the#visual novel I'm making now has partially to do with the main character working as a sort of writer/scribe/artist assistant in an elven#city (set in my world/with my worldbuilding species and versions of elves and etc) and I was thinking of maybe incorporating#somehow being able to collect little writing type items like these like.. you can get different wax seal patterns or pens or etc. when I do#stuff like this in Real Life it always makes me think of that like.. ouh... this is good research.. what it shall be like to be a littol#elf collecting wax seals and such.. indeed... GRR i need to be finished with my current game NOWWW... i MUST work on other#thingss... aughh... ANYWAY.. yay. accomplishment to do One Single Thing other than Sit In The Summer Heat And Rot#though also hilarious as this was the first cool-ish day that was below 80F in a while hgvh#waking up like 'wow.. i actually feel okay today?? like I could do things?? how mysterious.. I wonder why..?? :0'' Its The Weather You Fool#Tis Always The Weather
