how does picasso go through periods of art that’s take SO long from start to finish. my art is always changing. im through art phases like im running out of time. i sit down and suddenly everything’s rendered like a teal crystal. everythings gloss and shiny as FUCK. it’s all cell shading in b&w. shitty ms paint quality. pixel art. scratchy colors like pencil on paper. the same thing but also with watercolor. traditional outline with digital coloring. NO outline. sanrio artstyle. coloring in manga panels like a coloring book. 100 custom mem cakes. drew like 2 pieces from start to finish with ONE (1) shitty brush. more i haven’t mentioned and many more to come

Been obsessively working on an idea for a Splatoon and partially DnD based magic system, thought I’d share it! If anything is disorganized, contradicts, or repeats itself, it’s because most of it has been written at midnight throughout the past week
v Everything under the cut! v
Random Important Stuff
Music is canonically magical
Zap fish and Power eggs give power (magical in nature?)
Ink based magic
Since splatoon is post-apocalyptic, ancient humans had cool technologies or smth
Ancient sea gods (variants/take inspo off of splatoon bosses? King salmonids might be magic imbued/ just actual gods?)
Splatoon “demons” have something to do with story mode voices? Or ancient human ghosts?
“Plant magic includes coral now
Training grounds and schools to connect with magic are sprinkled throughout
Monk abilities are now squid roll and super jump because yes
Fairies are like sea butterflies???
Global warming caused extreme weather conditions (maybe take inspo off of that Pokémon concept by lockstin & noggin?)
Music mind control definitely exists (maybe Octavio/-like uses it? Or Tartar?)
Sanitized and fuzzy ink is a little wackus bonkus (made from dead bits and aliens and stuff, so it interacts with world differently due to magical/ technological properties)
Ancient clans confirmed w/ examples being Shiver, Frye, and Big Man
Weapons help concentrate ink magic
Other races can have magic, but it’s off a different type (since no ink)
^^^ Music, Memories (mem cakes do be like that), coral and other plants, control of minor sea creatures, abilities directly based off of species, etc.
Main pillars of magic are rooted in Song, Ink, Color, and Memories. Based on Deep cut and other characters, we can assume most if not all species have ink
Ink color is important, not necessarily magic in and of itself, but a manifestation of it (slightly edited this fact later on, don't worry about it)
No fey realm :( but they do have a magic realm of sorts. It’s a realm manifested of pure color, ink, and music, as well as human memories mixed in there. Maybe also nuclear, who knows. (For simplicity I’m calling it a fey realm though)
Rain is dangerous, Rain World style
Transient water/ink pools to other dimensions?
Nuclear based hell circles?
Maybe nuclear power is the “demonic” side of magic? And Cephalo-etcs are semi-resistant to it, and learned to control it like a form of dark magic?
Poisonous/venomous species assassins are fairly common, there’s whole cults/underground schools dedicated to the art of it
Jellyfish hive mind do be like that???
Frying permanently “fries in” a food based magic (like Crusty Sean might have a now-permanent run speed up)
Zapfish are along the same lines as king salmonids, just more respected due to them acting as a big friendly traveling energy source
8 is seen as a “magic number” of sorts to Octarians
Magic Specific Details
Like I said before, main pillars/sources are Music, Colors, Memories, and Ink!
Nuclear magic, while “natural,” is looked down upon, and generally considered evil. Fairly dangerous for both users and target
Use weapons as focuses most of the time! Especially ink based weapons, while being useful physically also allow for ink based manipulation. Song based weapons work as well, and while memories don’t have a focus, they can be compressed into memcakes
Sanitized, Fuzzy, and [side order] ink is all modified technologically, magically, or nuclearly, and is all highly dangerous and illegal. The main reason why creatures get permanently affected by it (mind control, becoming furries, etc.) in the first place
Jellyfish can use telepathic sort of magic, it’s main source being Memories
Zapfish are a siphon of electrical energy and magic, helping spur technology and link the gap for many different races as a pseudo-magic. Also some sort of more powerful being, sort of like a dragon
Respawn anchors are a mix of Ink and Memory technology, powered by the Zapfish
Salmonids have different magic customs, using more nuclear magic, as well as different types of song and technology
Super Jump, squid roll, etc. are all movement spells, many species can use them
Temporary drink and food-based magic is their form of alchemy/potions. Temporarily enhances abilities
Salmonid excel in food magic due to their whole thing with being eaten after death
Color chips include technologically engineered magic [side order please give me lore]
Color is a type of magic usually coinciding with emotions. “Fey” use it regularly, and their realm is a pure collection of it and song
Ghosts are manifested and affected by Memories, and they live in a sort of ghost realm similar to the void with human tech and stuff. Bits and bobs of memories and artifacts floating around
Song music is really strong, and does a lot of mind related stuff. (Ex: Jellyfish get their telepathic power from song) (and color)
Species abilities includes: Bioluminescence, venom/poison, electricity, regeneration, spitting insides out at you, seeing more colors (giving stronger color magic), cold/ice magic, etc.
Booyah magic is real, and primarily based on sound (Music)
Splatfest law is actually somewhat true, sometimes things are manifested by the memories of it, as well as predicting future events
Power eggs give energy similar to the strength of a singular mini Zapfish. Golden power eggs are super strong magic conductors, and control and siphon energy as well.
Super sea snails have a sort of magic randomizer imbued in them
Kraken magic is gotten from colors, ink, and extreme emotions
While some creatures don’t have ink magic, some still do, such as eels, sharks, mantas,
Main Mythological Creatures
Great Zapfish - gives energy, lawful good, invested in Song slightly more. My man powers the entire three cities, I’m proud of him. Popular god among most city-dwellers
Huge fry - Reincarnated god, shows up only in Salmonids. Chaotic Good, fights for justice but will destroy a city (oops)
Horrorboros - Reincarnated nuclear empowered god of salmonids, most popular among them as a result. God of life, death, and reincarnation. Huge Fry is kind of like a child or champion of sorts
Cohozuna - Nuclear empowered king of salmonids, similar to Grizz in that he’s not exactly a god, though he didn’t cause his own nuclear shenanigans. Treated like a god though, and has special cool abilities
Grizz* - He basically made himself a “god” with his fuzzy ooze.
Goldy- Minor god/creature, controls glowfies. Kind of like pestilence or something? Very popular among salmonids, usually the leaders of the troops they are in
Minor gods based off of Deep Cut’s families (shark, eel, and manta)
Nessie - Canonically exists!
Space - Not a creature, but space is important to almost all creatures. Radio waves for the Splatfest come from there, Horrorboros is said to have come from there, Huge Fry is often depicted in outer space, etc. (Grizz is also related to space, but again, he’s a self-made god)
Kraken (creature) - Major god to many Octolings, the Kraken is somewhat of a magic common ancestor, and/or gifted it’s magic to cephalopods (color and ink)
Ink vampires - They exist. Not exactly dead, but a deficiency in ink or color can cause vampirism. Not to be confused with the vampire squid species

Just watched the final episode of Delicious Party Pretty Cure.
Picking up where the last episode left off, Cure Precious follows Fennel as he falls. In some white void, a younger Fennel is crying and wondering why Ginger wouldn’t pay attention to him. Cure Precious assures him that Ginger surely cared about him too, with Ginger’s spirit briefly manifesting from the lucky cat that brought Cure Precious to him. A surprised Fennel, now back to his proper age, is offered a rice ball by Cure Precious. A rice ball Recipeppi urges Fennel to accept her offer, and he fondly recalls how Ginger once did the same for him.
The Recipe-Bon is released, and the captured Recipeppis freed, returning food to the world. The other three Cures happily greet Cure Precious as she safely returns with Fennel.
With food returned to the world, Oishina Town throws a huge festival to celebrate, with restaurants that previously had to close down now being able to re-open. Rosemary watches each of the Cures, as Amane is helping out in her family’s shop, Ran and her siblings help out at the panda hut, Kokone and her parents are at the fancy restraurant where Princess Maira via video call encourages customers to try out the special pita bread, with Kokone’s friends from school showing up to help out as well. Yui is also helping out at her family’s shop, giving out vegetable rice balls, with Takumi showing up to help out. Kome-Kome notices Rosemary, and asks what he is up to.
Rosemary explains to the Energy Fairies how they’ll be going home soon, and so he wanted to commit everyone’s smiles to memory before they return to the CooKingdom. Later, the Cures, Rosemary, Takumi and Monpei/Cinnamon head to the CooKingdom. The king thanks Rosemary for his good work, and apologizes to Cinnamon for the false accusations against him, allowing him to have one of the special Delicious Stones once more. The king and queen then thank the Cures and Black Pepper for everything they’ve done, as well as the Energy Fairies, who will be entrusted with protecting the Recipe-Bon once more.
The group take part in another celebration at the CooKingdom, with a now re-programmed Spiritor serving food and having come to appreciate food. Cerfuil and some other Cook Fighters bring out a massive cake that the king and queen made, only to realize the cake is so big they don’t know how to light the candles. Yui has a solution, however. The Cures transform and use their finishing move to light all the candles at once.
Pam-Pam and Mem-Mem reveal that after their memory and more of their power returned, they now have the ability to take on human form as well, with Kome-Kome being happy that her fellow Energy Fairies can now do so as well. Rosemary goes to check on Secretor, Narcistor and Fennel, as well as bring them some cake from the party. Secretor is looking through recipe books, hoping to get the chance to work alongside Hatsuko once she has served her sentence. Narcistor is still being stubborn, while Secretor suggests that someone with talent like him should surely be able to make good food as well. Narcistor is skeptical of the cake, but at least decides to eat the strawberry on top, finding himself enjoying it. Rosemary tells him he should keep trying more foods, since there’s a lot of good stuff out there. Finally, Rosemary goes to Fennel’s cell, telling him that his actions were unforgivable, and that he’ll keep watching over him from now on.
After the party, Rosemary brings the Cures, as well as Takumi and Cinnamon over to a field of flowers. Rosemary reveals that he had always looked up to the legendary Pretty Cures, and wanted to be like them, even if he didn’t know what they were like back then. He expresses his gratitude for being able to help the Cures save all the food, and that the Cures are even more amazing than he ever imagined. Yui tells him they’re the ones who should be thanking him, with each of the Cures expressing their gratitude for becoming Pretty Cures and how each of them have grown as people since then.
As it is time to say their good-byes, Pam-Pam and Mem-Mem don’t want to part with Kokone and Ran, but Kome-Kome tearfully reminds them of Yui’s words from before, and how while they may not be able to see each other as often, they’ll still be connected and never forget each other. Yui comforts Kome-Kome, with the Cures and Energy Fairies promising to meet each other again.
After returning to Oishina Town, Yui and Takumi are sitting side by side, with Yui expressing a wish to explore the rest of the world someday and see all the lucky cat statues, and asks Takumi if he’d like to go with her. Takumi is initially flustered, asking if she means just the two of them, before Yui clarifies that she does plan on inviting the others as well, but she wanted to ask him first. Before Takumi can get her to elaborate on why, the others show up, inviting Yui to go shopping with them. Yui asks Takumi to come along as well, and the five of them all head out together as Yone narrates, telling them to keep enjoying food and all life has to offer.
Cue the credits, with a montage of what everyone gets up during the first half of the credits song. After the credits, we get a post-credits scene of the Delicious Party Cures planning a visit to the CooKingdom, when they realize they don’t have a pen to sign the cards for the presents they’re bringing along. A blue-haired girl spots them, and offers to lend them a fancy looking pen. After signing the cards, they give her a gift and a rice ball to thank her. She writes down the “Food brings smile” phrase, before running off, declaring its time to be a hero.
A really good final episode! The Cures using their group finishing attack to light the candles on a giant cake is probably one of the funniest uses of such a finishing attack we’ve seen throughout the series. And the villains have to serve their sentences, with Fennel presumably having to stay there for life due to everything he did. Pam-Pam and Mem-Mem gaining human forms was also pretty neat. The future of Yui and Takumi’s relationship remains ambiguous, but I didn’t really expect any resolution on that anyways.
So, yeah. I really enjoyed this series, and I’ll be looking forward to the next one!

This is probably gonna be the start of a thread for dumping ideas for that Splatoon RPG fangame I came up with, just to get them out there. (This game isn’t gonna happen, it’s really just wishful thinking and fun.)
So far, it’d be a Earthbound/Pokemon-like game (top-down view) with a turn based battle system. You could pick up party members to follow you around and fight with you. There’d be normal attacks and mini game attacks, which are Warioware-style minigames such as a rhythm minigame for the idols or a turf war minigame for the agents. Certain party members could also give the whole team perks (i.e. Cap’n Cuttlefish could boost the team’s health as a hypeman, Agent 3 could boost the team’s strength). There’d also be specific supers for every character (Agent 3 turns into the Kraken, Pearl busts out her Killer Wail) but each has its limitations (Pearl has to give up 4 turns to warm up her vocal cords). I might scrap this battle system for a beat’em up though.
The game would have a main story and be very story-focused, but like Earthbound, it’d also be open world. Players would be able to explore different locations (Inkopolis, Octo Valley, etc.) and take side quests from background characters.
The main character would probably be 3, though that may change. There’d be two hubs: the New Squidbeak Splatoon base in Octo Valley and 3’s apartment in Inkopolis. There you would be able to save and heal up. In 3’s apartment you’d be able to upgrade weapons by customizing them. You’d be able to do the same with the help of Marina in the base. Food and perks could be bought from Crusty Sean or from vending machines littered everywhere. New weapons could be bought from Sheldon. Collectible and lootable chests and items would be littered everywhere.
I considered making the art style pixel art, but I think a pastel, Splatoon 2 art style would be more unique and aesthetically pleasing. Here’s what I have so far on it.
Tumblr media
It’s pretty bare bones, only supposed to try out an concept for walk sprites (they’re supposed to resemble mem cakes, though they might be too cartoony and cutesy) with some quick context. I’m probably gonna make the sprites smaller and the viewable area larger.

so in the youtube comments section of one splatoon video about the last update i saw a comment on that “we could get stickers to put on our weapons to make them feel like ours” and i really love that. so like, theres the crane game in the square out by the shoal, next to squid beatz. im thinkin that you could put at least 10 g in there for 1 game, and there’s a bunch of sticker sheets that you could put on your weapon. there’s prolly gonna be some small buffs to particular weapons, and, like gacha games, several types of rarity? aka normal, shiny, holographic, kinda like pokemon cards. the stickers could look like mem cakes: brands, weapons, people, and like the stickers on custom weapons

Eddsworld miscellaneous hcs
ok there's probably like 100 of these already or something, but I thought I'd add mine anyway, because hey, it's fun and I'll probably change or add a few later. (Also this ended up waaaaaaaay longer then i meant it to be wh o ops so uh be warned its pretty damn long-)
Tom:
Shortest! (i know it's normally either edd or tord, but after seeing saloonatics, I just couldn't resist the idea of the grumpiest one being the smallest. Cute right?)
Relatively strong arms, more fat around his stomach and torso then his legs.
Occasionally works gigs at local clubs and stuff for money.
Doesn't have much social media aside from Facebook so he can occasionally stalk his old college mates.
He actually likes sports like football and tennis. (His favourite sport is seeing how many bars he can hit up in one nigh-//shot//)
His hair smells like pineapple! (And the rest of him like booze-)
He's up for pretty much anything if he's drunk enough to have fun and not remember enough to regret it
But not bowling.
N e ve r bo wl ing
He's still got a scar on his left arm from The End. :( But Matt and Edd helped him to fix it up, so it's all good!
He's actually a pretty chill and sensible guy, and despite being snarky and sarcastic whenever he can, he genuinely cares about his relationships with people, scared that one day they'll get bored of him and cast him aside. He's really just a goofball with big city dreams of becoming a rockstar.
Spends like two hours in the shower crying and listening to MCR
His favourite show is Bad Education. It's good for when he needs cheering up.
He likes snacks and foods that are crunch, and salty, spicy, and sometimes savoury. So Crisps, Pringles, Doritos, chex mix etc.
Edd:
Second shortest/third tallest
Kinda chubby tbh but he's the BEST at hugs.
His forearm game is actually pretty strong because of all the time he spends making art to pay for their bills (because hey, someone's gotta do it amirite). You don't wanna head into an arm-wrestling contest with this guy.
Makes money by selling his art and also taste-testing all the latest cola products! (Just...not the diet ones).
Aside from a devianart, redbubble and maybe even a tumblr for art commissions, he doesn't really care about social media. Or regular media. Politics who?
His favourite sport? Seeing how many cans of cola he can get through on an especially difficult project. (Cricket always looked kind of fun though)
Smells like cola and not taking a shower in days because he HAS to get the lineart perfect and edd are you ok when was the last time you slept- (jokes aside, i can see him smelling like graphite and paints and sharpies from his art supplies).
Can pull the perfect poker face like damn son having a baby face sure comes in handy when lying to your roomate about why there's broken guitar strings hanging out of Ringo's mouth again
Has a scar on the inside of his eyelid from the time Tom 'accidently' poked him in the eye with a pencil (...may or may not be based off personal experience)
Edd is pretty friendly and open with people, he likes getting to know them and joking around. He's the Ultimate Punmaster ™, and loves nothing more to poke fun. He sees the world through the eyes of a cartoonist, and will never miss a comedic opportunity.
Be warned! He's actually fairly smart, and can read people well, knowing just how to really get under someone's skin. It's a good thing he can't be bothered with any of that though.
Gets his best ideas either in the tub or when hes just about to sleep. Because of that, he keeps a water-proof and regular notebook. Nearly had a heart-attack countless times because he accidently swapped them around.
Despite his complaints about absurd plot conveniences, he actually likes Doctor Wh- i mean "Proffesor Why", there's just something about the concept of time travel...he also likes cartoons! Like, a lot. He'll watch most anything and everything if it's animated and the writing is decent.
Likes anything sour, sweet, and chewy! So Jelly Babies, Wine gums, Sour patch kids, that kind of thing
Tord:
(Most of these are heavily based upon his life as Red Leader so sorry if you were looking for more domestic Tord. Maybe I'll do seperate hcs for that one day)
Second tallest! Quite a bit taller then Tom, a bit taller then Edd, just about average height, if a bit taller. He's closer to Matt in height then Edd.
He's actually quite well-built! You wouldn't think it because of the baggy hoodie he wears but he's got pretty good muscle, and his endurance and strength is well above the others. This mostly comes from the logic that he's been training and leading the Red Army, so it just makes sense to me that he'd resemble a soldier physically, yknow? AU-wise, or before he started the whole world domination thing, he'd be a little more scrawny, but he could still kick everyone's ass (he probably tried copying numerous anime battle stances lol-)
He's pretty well off, it turns out you can get quite rich by adopting some uh...rather unconventional means of money-making. Of course you could always say he just sold his inventions.
Does having your own private network of underground intelligence-gathering units count as social media? No? Nevermind.(He has a hentaihaven account-)
He likes dodgeball, archery, and you guessed it, arcade shooter games. Anything where he can point and hit something basically.
He smells like gunpowder, dirt, oil from machine maintenance and the cold? Like if the cold had a smell, he would have that smell, does that make sense? He also probably smells like Old Spice because idfk it just reminds me of him ok.
He doesn't exactly get out to socialise much, be prefers to stay at his desk, or curled up next to the fire with a mug of hot cider when he wants to relax. Sometimes Paul and Pat will drag him outside when they think he needs a breath of fresh air, and they'll go visit the nearest marketplace for food and other supplies. He likes strategic games like Chess or Draughts, and it's a good way to show off and get practice at the same time.
Scar-wise, he probably has quite a few from his fights. Post-the end, I'm not sure what would happen to him, since I've seen people go in a lot of different directions. I DO think he'd replace him arm with the robotic one, since that seemed too heavily implied to not happen. Regarding his face, I think the burns and stuff would probably heal over time, and depending on the technology in the future, he'd either still have some heavy scarring, or maybe he'd develop some kind of treatment so that it restores him to almost fully healed. He could always go the cyborg route and end up half-man half-machine like we see with future Matt and Tom.
(About the patch on his face, I have a theory about how he he aquired that scar/injury. See, I don't think Tord founded Red Army by himself, no. I think he was introduced to it by Paul (who we see in the same classroom as them in Poweredd) who was kept back a few years cause....uh...yknow- Anyway I have a theory that Tord eventually climbed the ranks until he became second-in-command, and he then murdered Red Leader and took his title. Their fight is where he got that injury. It's not really canon-supported much, but I find it an interesting concept!)
You've probably guessed, but I kind of disgree with Tord's portrayal sometimes. I think I prefer the darker, meaner side to him. I wouldn't say he's (completely) evil, but I'm not really one for the whole "self-hating, regretful angsty Tord who just wants some love and support" and stuff. I mean, it's cute with ships amd fluff, amd ideally he does make amends and rejoin the group, but I just like the thought that he's genuinely not a nice guy yknow? Like, he's actually done some fucked up stuff, and The End is probably just one case. (Of course this is all opinion based so feel free to disagree if u wanna wheeze-)
Has the WORST sleeping schedule. Has been known to fall asleep in the bath/shower.
He prefers movies to shows. His favourite is the Kingsman series (he can relate on many different levels).
Likes bittersweet things, (just like his personality amirite-). So cake with coffee, or tarts, liquorice, hard candy, that kind of thing.
Matt:
(My favourite-)
He tol. Tallest of them all!
Someone once described him as "borderline twink" and tbh i agree. I feel like he'd have a slightly feminine figure (which is perfectly normal!) and he both rocks it, and knows he does.
He works at a nail salon every now and again, his self-confidence and bubbliness makes him get along well with customers. (Also Matt would definitely wear nail polish ok dont even try to convince me otherwise. Actually speaking of,)
He has EVERY kind of social media possible. Instagram, twitter, facebook, tumblr, facebook, snapchat, you name it! He's especially prominent on instagram. He likes to keep an ~aesthetic~
He likes gymnastics and dance, activities like that. Anything which puts him in a creative spotlight. He'd probably take up acting classes, and then insist on only being given monologues.
He'd probably have quite a pleasant and nature-y smell? Like uhh citrus-y, pine tree, a hint of flowers, that kind of thing. Although he'd DEFINITELY slap on way too much cologne on a date or something and end up smelling like he just emptied out a bottle of febreeze.
He'd probably go out quite a lot! I can see Matt being a social butterfly, his friendliness and general likeability probably mean that he's got a few friends and stuff around. I can also see him as the kind of person who'd enjoy taking walks in the park, sitting below a tree, that kind of thing. He probably runs a self-love session (that works a little TOO well). He wants to get out there and show off his beautiful face, so it doesn't take a lot to drag him outside (provided you keep a mirror on you, that is).
He doesn't really have any physical scars. I mean, i do hc him with freckles, but they don't count so. he has a mental scar. After he hit himself with the memory eraser gun, he completely erased his memories. It took a while for him to settle onto the personality he has now. His face was the one thing that he knew for certain held a sense of familiarity and stability, so that's partly why his narcissism boomed so much. He sometimes gets random flashbacks of being a zombeh leader, being less of a nicer person, and it can be quite unnerving for him. He also has other memory issues, which is why he can forget things so easily, and comes across as an idiot most of the time.
He can be quite oblivious, but I dont think hes a total idiot. He can read people fairly well, and is emotionally intelligent. He says stupid things sometimes despite knowing they'll get a reaction, just because he wants to, and thinks that life should be as fun and full of joy as possible. He's too trusting, and wants to see the good in everyone. At the end of the day, if you disrespect him (and his face), you'll see that he can be more then just the nice guy.
LUSH!! Matt is HERE for all those lush products. I'm talking bath bombs, lip scrubs, shower jellies, all that good stuff! And ofc he has like 100+ products for his hair and skincare routine, because let's face it, it's Matt. I also like to think he owns a bunch of bath toys and rubber duckies, and like the kid at heart he is, he'll sit in a bubble bath playing with them, and re-enacting all of their adventures.
He mostly prefers youtube videos over TV, so you bet he's subscribed to all the beauty gurus, vloggers, people like that. He does think children's cartoons are nice to watch though, so every once in a while he'll force Tom and Edd to sit with him and watch the latest season of My little pony.
He likes anything sweet and fun to look at! Especially if it's trending, so he can post pictures of himself eating/drinking it. So if there's another rolled ice cream/new starbucks-ccino/unicorn themed food item floating about, he'll probably be trying it.
(Ah man this turned out way longer then i thought. It went from simple headcanons to like full blown theories whoops- maybe i should make seperate posts if its too difficult to read? Anyway let me know what you think nonetheless!)

Baraja’s unique and ingenious take on lidar shines in a crowded industry
It seems like every company making lidar has a new and clever approach, but Baraja takes the cake. Its method is not only elegant and powerful, but fundamentally avoids many issues that nag other lidar technologies. But it’ll need more than smart tech to make headway in this complex and evolving industry.
To understand how lidar works in general, consult my handy introduction to the topic. Essentially a laser emitted by a device skims across or otherwise very quickly illuminates the scene, and the time it takes for that laser’s photons to return allows it to quite precisely determine the distance of every spot it points at.
WTF is lidar?
But to picture how Baraja’s lidar works, you need to picture the cover of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.”
GIFs kind of choke on rainbows, but you get the idea.
Imagine a flashlight shooting through a prism like that, illuminating the scene in front of it — now imagine you could focus that flashlight by selecting which color came out of the prism, sending more light to the top part of the scene (red and orange) or middle (yellow and green). That’s what Baraja’s lidar does, except naturally it’s a bit more complicated than that.
The company has been developing its tech for years with the backing of Sequoia and Australian VC outfit Blackbird, which led a $32 million round late in 2018 — Baraja only revealed its tech the next year and was exhibiting it at CES, where I met with co-founder and CEO Federico Collarte.
“We’ve stayed in stealth for a long, long time,” he told me. “The people who needed to know already knew about us.”
The idea for the tech came out of the telecommunications industry, where Collarte and co-founder Cibby Pulikkaseril thought of a novel use for a fiber optic laser that could reconfigure itself extremely quickly.
“We thought if we could set the light free, send it through prism-like optics, then we could steer a laser beam without moving parts. The idea seemed too simple — we thought, ‘if it worked, then everybody would be doing it this way,’ ” he told me, but they quit their jobs and worked on it for a few months with a friends and family round anyway. “It turns out it does work, and the invention is very novel and hence we’ve been successful in patenting it.”
Startups at the speed of light: Lidar CEOs put their industry in perspective
Rather than send a coherent laser at a single wavelength (1550 nanometers, well into the infrared, is the lidar standard), Baraja uses a set of fixed lenses to refract that beam into a spectrum spread vertically over its field of view. Yet it isn’t one single beam being split but a series of coded pulses, each at a slightly different wavelength that travels ever so slightly differently through the lenses. It returns the same way, the lenses bending it the opposite direction to return to its origin for detection.
It’s a bit difficult to grasp this concept, but once one does it’s hard to see it as anything but astonishingly clever. Not just because of the fascinating optics (which I’m partial to, if it isn’t obvious) but because it obviates a number of serious problems other lidars are facing or about to face.
First, there are next to no moving parts whatsoever in the entire Baraja system. Spinning lidars like the popular early devices from Velodyne are being replaced at large by ones using metamaterials, MEMS, and other methods that don’t have bearings or hinges that can wear out.
Baraja’s “head” unit, connected by fiber optic to the brain.
In Baraja’s system, there are two units, a “dumb” head and an “engine.” The head has no moving parts and no electronics; It’s all glass, just a set of lenses. The engine, which can be located nearby or a foot or two away, produces the laser and sends it to the head via a fiber-optic cable (and some kind of proprietary mechanism that rotates slowly enough that it could theoretically work for years continuously). This means it’s not only very robust physically, but its volume can be spread out wherever is convenient in the car’s body. The head itself can also be resized more or less arbitrarily without significantly altering the optical design, Collarte said.
Second, the method of diffracting the beam gives the system considerable leeway in how it covers the scene. Different wavelengths are sent out at different vertical angles; A shorter wavelength goes out towards the top of the scene and slightly longer one goes a little lower. But the band of 1550 +/- 20 nanometers allows for millions of fractional wavelengths that the system can choose between, giving it the ability to set its own vertical resolution.
It could for instance (these numbers are imaginary) send out a beam every quarter of a nanometer in wavelength, corresponding to a beam going out every quarter of a degree vertically, and by going from the bottom to the top of its frequency range cover the top to the bottom of the scene with equally spaced beams at reasonable intervals.
But why waste a bunch of beams on the sky, say, when you know most of the action is taking place in the middle part of the scene, where the street and roads are? In that case you can send out a few high frequency beams to check up there, then skip down to the middle frequencies, where you can then send out beams with intervals of a thousandth of a nanometer, emerging correspondingly close together to create a denser picture of that central region.
If this is making your brain hurt a little, don’t worry. Just think of Dark Side of the Moon and imagine if you could skip red, orange, and purple, and send out more beams in green and blue — and since you’re only using those colors, you can send out more shades of green-blue and deep blue than before.
Third, the method of creating the spectrum beam provides against interference from other lidar systems. It is an emerging concern that lidar systems of a type could inadvertently send or reflect beams into one another, producing noise and hindering normal operation. Most companies are attempting to mitigate this by some means or another, but Baraja’s method avoids the possibility altogether.
“The interference problem — they’re living with it. We solved it,” said Collarte.
The spectrum system means that for a beam to interfere with the sensor it would have to be both a perfect frequency match and come in at the precise angle at which that frequency emerges from and returns to the lens. That’s already vanishingly unlikely, but to make it astronomically so, each beam from the Baraja device is not a single pulse but a coded set of pulses that can be individually identified. The company’s core technology and secret sauce is the ability to modulate and pulse the laser millions of times per second, and it puts this to good use here.
Collarte acknowledged that competition is fierce in the lidar space, but not necessarily competition for customers. “They have not solved the autonomy problem,” he points out, “so the volumes are too small. Many are running out of money. So if you don’t differentiate, you die.” And some have.
Instead companies are competing for partners and investors, and must show that their solution is not merely a good idea technically, but that it is a sound investment and reasonable to deploy at volume. Collarte praised his investors, Sequoia and Blackbird, but also said that the company will be announcing significant partnerships soon, both in automotive and beyond.

Beauty Sikelela opened her eyes at 5:58am. Twenty seven and a half years of having to wake at the same time every morning (except for Thursdays which was her day off) had taught her body to wake up before the alarm went off – probably better so with her angina problems. The bed complained as she eased her large frame upright and aimed for the floor with her tiptoes. Her bed was raised on bricks in the custom of her ancestors in defence against the Tokoloshe, the tiny half-man half-monster which terrifies those who are unprepared at night. She said a prayer and put on her robe.
After a wash in the basin of her small quarters she donned her uniform of matching dress and headscarf. Then carefully opening the door with the broom in hand, she peeped to see whether the dogs were in the courtyard. That small one! Last week he got his teeth into the ankle of her sister’s firstborns’ daughter’s boyfriend’s little brother. Ag! Bafana howled but the Madam yelled at him to stop running because the dogs will only chase him more.
They’re probably still sleeping off all that extra spicy piri-piri braaivleis dinner.
She entered the kitchen of the sprawling home with relief and went to prepare a tea tray to take through to the family. While waiting for the kettle to boil, she cut generous slices of bread for herself and the new gardener and layered them thickly with margarine and apricot jam. She had heard him grumbling as he was raking yesterday, “Trees are no good, they make too much work”.
She had snorted, the only thing a tree was any good for was shade for his after lunch nap.
But he was a Zimbabwean, they were different up there, sho!  Being an AmaXhosa herself who had left Kafferskraal (why they never change that name?) down in the Eastern Cape at fourteen years of age to find work in the big city Jo’burg, she knew what it was like to say goodbye and then have to learn to be someone new. She heard the back gate rattle and his whistling before she saw his cautious booted foot and rolled-up newspaper. Ehweh – you need them with those big-teeth injas running loose.
She placed the teapot and carefully lifted the tray. As she thudded along the thickly carpeted bedroom corridor she could hear the murmur of voices coming from the master suite. The family were all waiting for their tea.
“Good morning Beauty!”
“Morning Masta, Mem, Frankie, Dominique”.
Mrs Haynes said. “Thank you Beauty. Listen, I’ll be with you jusnow to talk about the tennis party today. I’ll have to pop out to Petronella’s this morning to pick up the cake but I’d like you to make cupcakes. The ladies will be here at three so they need to be ready by then, hey?”
“Yes Mem”.
Mr Haynes didn’t look up from his phone, “Why don’t you let her take the Beemer to fetch the cake herself now that I paid for all the lessons?”
Back in the kitchen Beauty opened the window and stuck out her head.
“Praise God!” She yelled.
“PRAISE GOD!” She yelled again.
“PRAIIIIIIIISE GOH-HOD!!”
A head in a woolly hat popped up from beneath the window, causing her to step back in alarm.
“I’m here,” said the new man, producing a half-chewed newspaper.
“Haikona, don’t give me such frights! Here’s your brekfis”.
She swapped a tin plate and steaming mug for the paper.
Beauty settled down with the tattered Times to enjoy her breakfast but her thoughts turned to her children. Mr Haynes had given them big money to make something better of their lives. Fundiswa – she did well working at a smart company after going to university to learn about economics and other Western ideas. But Ntando was a different story. His ideas of bettering himself were all about a shiny car and fancy shoes. And his newest no-good girlfriend was expecting his third baby.
Beauty rubbed her forehead with her palm.
Hawu! Just look at these thin-body fashion ladies in the paper.
The house phone rang, and rumbling to the hall with her pumping elbows doing most of the motion, she picked up on the final ring. “Hello?” she gasped.
“Hello Beauty. This is Mrs Phumela Mashaba from next door. I’m instructing my Pilates class outside so please pray quietly. The shouting is very disturbing”.
“Sorry Mrs Mashaba, already,” she rolled her eyes and slammed the receiver down.
A ping sound in her pocket was a reminder to check her own phone – an email.
Pheeeeewwwww- 2500 followers!
For the first time that morning she smiled; time to get baking so she could update her BeautysBestBakingOnlineCafe.com.
