Complicated!!!

On one hand, I am having SO. MUCH. FUN. How incredible it is to just write ... for me, without the lingering concerns of "but I need it to be publishable!!!!" I am the one who decides if it is publishable...and when I deem it so, I publish it. Amazing.

On the other hand, there's a little bit of nervousness and hesitation. One reason is [maybe not the right word] guilt around not working on my Nano novel ... BUT see above point about having fun.

Another reason is more specific to the content, the violence, the creepiness of Hatchett, etc. (Especially regarding an upcoming chapter - ch14 if you want to know.) The ever-present fear of, "What if this is too much?" I'm working on letting go of that, but it is, indeed, a work in progress.

But the honest answer is that I love my characters and I genuinely love their story, and I'm so glad I decided to come back and revive it from its Whumptober form because it's awesome. And it's allowed me to get to know some awesome humans 💜, so how could I ever be anything but grateful for that? 💜

Oh, God! I have no idea. Probably one that's still quite far away—it was actually posted for Whumptober but will probably change significantly by the time its turn to be revived comes around. Here's a sentence from that scene as it is currently written.

For a heartbeat, the knife remains still, poised to slash open her throat, a hunter ready to deliver a killing blow into the neck of his prey.

🥲 character who deserves more recognition?

Thanks for the ask! Probably Freyja and Viande. They started out as people-who-work-in-the-bar but quickly started to matter a lot more. They're still pretty minor characters in terms of page time, but a lot of worldbuilding happens through revelation of their stories.

It was really important to me that they weren't just convenient tragic backstories to motivate the main character, so they're both survivors who rescued themselves and they aren't like "bad thing happened and now I'm conveniently super tough and inspirational".

Freyja’s kind in a way not a lot of people I know are, the way people end up when they needed kindness themselves and didn’t get it from anywhere in time.

She takes out a cell and tucks the rest of the pack into the inside pocket of my coat, letting her hand linger against my chest for a moment, feeling the texture of the scars through my shirt. She doesn’t mean it like that. We’re all just experiments and experiences to Vee. She doesn’t do connection the way most people do.

For these I'll talk about the unnamed Savitar AU I've started.

🐕 comfort character?

Puppy!!!

I mean... I will answer the question now.

So this is gonna be an angsty fic. Savitar!Barry's undergone a lot of torture while Eobard brainwashed him and he is a massively unreliable narrator. Team Flash are, if understandably, not all that interested in helping him since he thinks he's here to kill Iris and that's all they know about him.

Surprisingly, Oliver is the comfort character in this one. Ignoring whatever was going on in Season 5 of Arrow, Oliver's getting what he thinks is a breather year. Which is of course when Savitar contacts him for help. And while of course Oliver's not going to help kill Iris, what Savitar wants help with is sorting out his nightmares and hallucinations. Oliver recognizes some of what Barry's going through in himself, from the PTSD he suffered after Ra'as tried, and failed, to brainwash Oliver.

Savitar is still Barry and Oliver wants to save him. So he runs off to Central City in order to try. When he realizes that Eobard Thawne is behind the Savitar persona, that's when Oliver turns to Team Flash.

💫 current choice of WIP title?

So it is an unnamed WiP at the moment, filed under "Savitar AU". But Savitar!Barry attempted to use music to mentally fight back against Eobard's brainwashing. One song that I've been thinking would feature prominently is Cringe by Matt Maeson. It's a song that's been pretty popular on the radio since it came out and 2023 is about when Savitar!Barry is from, so it's one he'd likely know well.

Since sometimes I take fic titles from song lyrics, I might consider doing that here with this song.

🎻 how’s the angst?

So much angst.

Savitar!Barry is struggling to break free of his programming but he's super traumatized by it all.

Oliver hates seeing any version of Barry suffering, so this is hard on him.

And Team Flash will get plenty of angst too. Angst for everyone. Angst to spare.

It's gonna be a difficult fic for me to write because of that, so it'll likely be a long while before it's ready to post.

Even once I stopped shivering, curled into a ball with my unfolded neck kerchief wrapped around me as much as it would go, sleep eluded me, chased away by fear and uncertainty. How can this be happening? The question spiralled round and round in my skull. Three years of running for IA, and this is how it ends? Here? With him?

I wonder who is out there. No one who knows or cares about me, of course. There’s no one left...

Jamie had seen his brother deal with a lot of stupid injuries. Will had always been the kind of child who got into trouble, and especially when he was very young, did not know how to get himself out of them. How often had Jamie been the one to wipe blood from a scrape on his knee, press a handkerchief to a bloody nose, lay a damp cloth over a burn? How many times had he shaken his head and bitten back admonishments? Winced and blinked back tears when no one was looking because his little brother was in pain?

Icy rain is falling now, sharp jabs of freezing fucking water pricking into my face and hands. I adjust the hood of my cloak, watching the drops splatter against the hard ground. The smell of rain upon earth and grass is usually so comforting, but here in the thick of the city, all I can smell is wet wool and misery. “I have to tell him.”

Pretty good! I was hoping to be well into January's line editing mission by now, but covid brain is a fucking nightmare so I'm still reading through the last draft and it's taking aaaages. I've had a month away from it which has given me enough distance to have an almost reader's eye view and I like it better than I remember.

🐕 comfort character?

Rafe. My violent, masochistic, aggressively avoidant, disaster person with a great coat, lots of scars and a pile of empty whiskey bottles on the floor.

💙 song(s) inspiration?

Infra-red by Placebo gives me the vibes.

🚨 any trigger warnings?

It's a cyberpunk story for adults, focusing on a corrupt military, a prison industrial complex, and human trafficking in a dystopian metropolis run by crime gangs. So.

🐍 who’s the liar?

I tend to write weaponised honesty and systematic corruption more than individual liars, which I'd never really thought about until just there now. There are some interrogration scenes in this book, so the people on the receiving end of those would be lying if they could.

My takeaway from the past 24+ hours...

There are so many of us that rely on ao3, whether you're a reader or writer. It brings us joy, it gives us an escape from the real world, and it lets us come together as a community to share stories and scenarios about our favorite fandoms and characters. The amount of posts I have seen on multiple platforms lamenting over the DDoS attacks is overwhelming - but with most of them comes a delightful cheer to the volunteers working to resolve this issue.

I've seen so many statements of praise for those volunteers, which is exactly what they deserve, and more. Can you imagine working for over 24 hours straight, on a volunteer basis, against something like this? They're the real MVPs, and I think our appreciation for them gets lost until moments like this rise.

With that said, here is my first real takeaway...

Don't bitch when ao3 does a donation drive. They work hard to keep the archive up and running, and with that costs money. Every server, every new addition or feature you want to see added to help make the site better, it costs money. The legal team that is defending fanfic authors??? MONEY. SO! DON'T! COMPLAIN!

I'm not saying you have to go out and donate your paycheck to ao3 - but I will say that, especially with this situation, if you can donate even a little bit to show your support, it means more than you probably realize, and even if you can't donate (which is totally okay), be kind to those who work on the archive. Send them kind words of encouragement, rather than flaming the archive because it's under attack - because yeah, I've seen people bitching AT ao3 for not working fast enough, or for it still being down. STOP IT.

My second takeaway...

Don't believe everything you see on the internet. Ao3 themselves have advised that the group claiming to take credit for this attack is to be treated with skepticism. And not only that, let's NOT automatically make assumptions about who is responsible just because of an organization's name. It's just a NAME, it doesn't identify a person's origin, background, etc. But I'm not here to dive into that much further. Point: I better not see any Sudanese hatred on my dash, or I will bite you.

My third takeaway...

Treat your fanfic writers with respect. We all now see first hand how much we depend on these stories. As I said above, for some it's an escape, a creative release, and a way to communicate with other people through similar interests. It's a beautiful creation, neither above nor below any other kind of literature.

Consider commenting, reblogging, kudos, anything you can to let the authors know you enjoyed and appreciate their works. Everyone is free to communicate in the way that suits them best, but every little bit is appreciated - as a fanfic writer myself, I can tell you that even a little heart emoji has made my day. It's like receiving a second kudos, and tells me that someone appreciated my efforts enough to give me a double thumbs up.

Any form of communication with the authors is appreciated. It lets them know that people are genuinely interested. We live in a world where INSTANT GRATIFICATION is taking over, but creations such as this take time. Talk with the authors, ask them about their wips, tell them they're doing a great job. Do NOT pester about "when are you updating next?" or the dreaded AI option - again, I will BITE PEOPLE if I see you doing this. Just...have some respect, show your appreciation, it's more than JUST FANFIC.

At the end of the day I guess this post is about being kind. Not pointing fingers or slandering people due to a name. It's about appreciating the things we do have, and not taking them for granted. Whether it's the brave cyber warriors currently fighting these DDoS attacks on the frontline, or the authors writing for not only their enjoyment, but for others too. Let's all respect one another, and show our support when and where we can.

Not really? Most adults (in my experience) know the 'don't like don't read' rule and know basic online etiquette. I've gotten some for discontinuing a fic or switching fandoms though

I don't write or draw NSFW! I like to make some suggestive themes sometimes, but I'm a very ace person, it's not something I do often. (I do have a current running goal that if my friend reaches their donation goal for their medical bills that I would give NSFW a shot, but again its not really my cup of tea)

10 – Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Nah I haven't written any cross overs, but I do draw them sometimes. Recently I've been spinning a Alice in Wonderland x COTL crossover in my head.

11 – Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yep. I've had people copy and paste my work, go in with a thesaurus to change a few words (like changing 'angry' to mad, 'upset' to 'sad', and so forth) to try and avoid detection and re-posted my written work under a different title name. AO3 staff took them down for violating their policy against plagiarism though

12 – Have you ever had a fic translated?

No. I wouldn't mind it so as long as I'm asked before hand, though not on anon so I can actually work with the person to prevent any mistranslations or mishandling, and that I don't want my work posted to other websites

13 – Have you ever co-written a fic?

I think I did when I was a teen but I cannot remember now

14 – What's your all-time favorite ship?

Eh I don't have any favorites, just ones I really focus on for a long while

15 – What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I can sit down for hours or several days and work on a writing wip completely in the zone. I cant do it on command but its at least something I can do

Spelling and grammar, and sometimes long running sentences. I just kinda write, theres not really a goal for it to be perfect though so as long as the story gist and vibe is right, im fine with it

I've done it before but only minor, had a friend help me with it (one or two lines of dialogue) Aside from that, I'm not comfortably fluent enough in anything to do it again without assistance

Some advice from AU Calebs!

Heck yeah I did it! Finally i finished ONE of the HUNDREDS AU crossover ideas I have in my head!! Crossovers are fun guys!! (I apologise for a bad english in advance. Writing this it a rush.)

I couldn't make a crossover meme without the legend. Sorry, not sorry. He is such a sad lad but tries to stay positive and be happy for his family uydfykudsutsudskudsluds (*dies*). I have to admitt, Caleb's dad energy is too strong for me to handle without wanting a hug him. No wonder! He was THE grandpa for centuries straight without a break. At least Caleb gets his whole family together in the end. Comics with him and either Hunter and Philip or Luz and Eda make me run in cirles around the room aaaa.

Damn, you definetly created one of the darkest AU in the fandom. Each time I re-read AU related posts I scream my lungs out because it is so angsty and so great. I am genuinely scared of your Belos ngl, because.. this man didnt loose anything and he still proceeds to do all that stuff. Enconter with him has 0 survival rate.

POOR CALEB! At least in the world of memes he had an opportunity to flee the captivity twice (the bald head and the car). This man had no moment of mental rest for centuries oh my God. One of my friends wants to fight his brother personally to protec Caleb at all cost sksksk. Well, at least Hunter will always have an actually loving relative! And if the happy ending is going to be canon, I think the future looks great, especially knowing how much pain all your characters go through currently. (And I think both Caleb and Hunter would need the "you are not a burdain" affirmations. At least some form of support in their situation.)

You said in the latest ask-answer that BK!Caleb was supposed to have white streaks in his hair so I attempted to add them. Hope they look fine! Colors for the outfit I got from Belos, so they would match, I guess???

He is such good brother but MAN HE NEEDS A BREAK FROM BEING AN ADULT! BOY! Insirt crying and heart emojis here.

My thoughts:

I have been drawing this for more than a month I think? And the only reason for that is my university. I hope to actually get an ADHD diagnosis because something is clearly wrong with me. But thats not the point.

There are so many ideas in my head. Goofy and not. The only problem is that I have less and less ability to do what I want lately. I wish I could bring them all to life, but at the same I dont know if anyone will be interested. Would AU crossovers look too self-indulgent? Or nah? Idk. (Just Grimwalker-Isle already has so much potential for stupid ridiculous fun I am runnin on coffee juice.)

Litteraly my mind is plagued with different fun plots and possibilities I am going crazy. But I also have A TON of WIPs that I need to finish. Perhaps I will attempt to manage everything at once, but, no promises.

When Marisol finds out Buck is bisexual and in love with Eddie, she threatens to reveal his true feelings to Eddie if Buck doesn’t step back and distance himself. Eddie struggles to understand why his best friend suddenly abandoned him and his son. Angst ensues.
