This Valentine's I want to profess my love for hymenoptera, more particularly ants, and more so the Texas Leaf-cutter!
Tumblr media
They are so stunning! And clever even! People have talked at length of their fungus farms, their large hunting groups, and efficiency in leaf collecting, but put all that, they are just fun to watch. I have a sizable colony living outside my home and some days when the weather is nice I have no work I just watch the run to and fro. The large lines of workers holding comically large leaves, the minors trailing the majors in a meandering fashion, how each rock and sand pile is meet with an unwavering resilience. I love their spiked up heads and string bean legs. I love them so much.

The Surucuá community in the state of Pará is the first to receive an Amazonian Creative Laboratory, a compact mobile biofactory designed to help kick-start the Amazon’s bioeconomy.
Instead of simply harvesting forest-grown crops, traditional communities in the Amazon Rainforest can use the biofactories to process, package and sell bean-to-bar chocolate and similar products at premium prices.
Having a livelihood coming directly from the forest encourages communities to stay there and protect it rather than engaging in harmful economic activities in the Amazon.
The project is in its early stages, but it demonstrates what the Amazon’s bioeconomy could look like: an economic engine that experts estimate could generate at least $8 billion per year.
In a tent in the Surucuá community in the Brazilian Amazonian state of Pará, Jhanne Franco teaches 15 local adults how to make chocolate from scratch using small-scale machines instead of grinding the cacao beans by hand. As a chocolatier from another Amazonian state, Rondônia, Franco isn’t just an expert in cocoa production, but proof that the bean-to-bar concept can work in the Amazon Rainforest.
“[Here] is where we develop students’ ideas,” she says, gesturing to the classroom set up in a clearing in the world’s greatest rainforest. “I’m not here to give them a prescription. I want to teach them why things happen in chocolate making, so they can create their own recipes,” Franco tells Mongabay.
The training program is part of a concept developed by the nonprofit Amazônia 4.0 Institute, designed to protect the Amazon Rainforest. It was conceived in 2017 when two Brazilian scientists, brothers Carlos and Ismael Nobre, started thinking of ways to prevent the Amazon from reaching its impending “tipping point,” when deforestation turns the rainforest into a dry savanna.
Their solution is to build a decentralized bioeconomy rather than seeing the Amazon as a commodity provider for industries elsewhere. Investments would be made in sustainable, forest-grown crops such as cacao, cupuaçu and açaí, rather than cattle and soy, for which vast swaths of the forest have already been cleared. The profits would stay within local communities.
A study by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the New Climate Economy, published in June 2023, analyzed 13 primary products from the Amazon, including cacao and cupuaçu, and concluded that even this small sample of products could grow the bioeconomy’s GDP by at least $8 billion per year.
To add value to these forest-grown raw materials requires some industrialization, leading to the creation of the Amazonian Creative Laboratories (LCA). These are compact, mobile and sustainable biofactories that incorporate industrial automation and artificial intelligence into the chocolate production process, allowing traditional communities to not only harvest crops, but also process, package and sell the finished products at premium prices.
The logic is simple: without an attractive income, people may be forced to sell or use their land for cattle ranching, soy plantations, or mining. On the other hand, if they can make a living from the forest, they have an incentive to stay there and protect it, becoming the Amazon’s guardians.
“The idea is to translate this biological and cultural wealth into economic activity that’s not exploitative or harmful,” Ismael Nobre tells Mongabay."

ABOUT THE SET
As you may recognize, the Açaí Dress is a remake of an old cc of mine*. I put in my best effort to retain its original essence while updating it to match my 2023 CC style, which has significantly evolved since its 2018 release. I also couldn't resist creating a second version, imagining how stunning it would look longer (and I was right).
Both the remake and the longer version have the same color palette and patterns.
*Please note that the links in the post are broken. I'll include them at the end of this post.
Now, let me tell you about my personal favorite from this set: the Cupuaçú Top. It's truly a standout piece that combines a crochet-inspired coat with a simple yet adorable tank top underneath, perfect for summer/spring cute and romantic outfits.
As it wasn't possible to do a recolor acc for it, I did as many color combinations as I could, with a total of 65 (additional to 55 plain/single colors).
Next is the Juá Shirt with Top, inspired by those lazy days when you don't care how your shirt looks or even want a cozy pajama-like outfit. This top offers effortless versatility with various prints, patterns, and pre-made color combinations or the option to customize using the recolor accessory.
For casual looks, the must-have item is the Cajá Bermuda shorts. Perfect for spring and summer, these shorts add a fresh and comfortable touch to any outfit.
Last but certainly not least, we have the Feijoa Short—a bold and laid-back piece with a belt adorned with silver details. In all swatches, the belt remains black.
BEHIND THE NAMES
Each item in this collection is named after a fruit from my home country, Brazil. It's a little nod to my roots and adds a fun touch to the set.

Thank you for taking the time to read this lengthy text and for your incredible support across all social media platforms and Patreon. I hope you enjoy these new items, XOXO

An emerging socio-bioeconomy
The concept of socio-bioeconomy acknowledges the intricate ties between biodiversity and socio-cultural systems. It advocates for sustainable production chains, protects genetic heritage, values traditional community knowledge, stimulates job creation and income generation and positions itself as a strategy for climate change adaptation.
Applied to the Amazon context, the socio-bioeconomy approach presents a vast spectrum of opportunities for generating innovative products, all the while promoting sustainable economic growth and preserving biological, cultural and social diversity. This bioeconomy already exists, but it´s far from reaching its full capacity.
Key opportunities include:
• The development of nutrient-rich superfoods production, such as the products produced by Awi Superfood. This company turns natural ingredients, such as açaí, cupuaçu, camu-camu and nuts, into sorbets and ice creams.
• The manufacturing of natural rubber used in tyres, shoes and fashion, such as produced by VEJA shoes.
• Advanced scientific research on plant species for developing new health products. Ecoflora, for example, has developed a stable, natural blue colourant for the food, beverage and cosmetic industries.
• Sustainable tourism that showcases the region's rich biodiversity and cultural heritage could also thrive. Sumisawa is showing what can be done here.
• Beyond direct biodiversity use, technology-driven businesses have vast potential to enhance forest and bioeconomy competitiveness, with startups addressing the region's unique energy, water, logistics and fire management challenges. For example, Umgrauemeio, with its Pantera platform, provides integrated solutions for fire risk prevention, instant and early detection, fast response and impact analysis, helping to mitigate the devastating effects of mega-fires in various ecosystems.
