To Langkawi!!!
I had a wonderful weekend with my friends in Langkawi, a group of 99 islands in Malaysia. Langkawi is a beautiful place with many attractions and activities. We stayed there for four days and had a lot of fun. On the first day, we visited the Eagle Square, where a huge eagle statue stands on a star-shaped platform. The eagle is the symbol of Langkawi and represents its prosperity and development. We took many photos with the eagle and enjoyed the view of the sea and the mountains. Then we took a cable car to the Sky Bridge, a curved bridge that connects two mountain peaks. The bridge is 687 meters above sea level and offers a stunning panorama of Langkawi. We walked on the bridge and felt like we were walking on clouds. It was an amazing experience. On the second day, we went to Chenang Beach, one of the most popular beaches in Langkawi. The beach was clean and clear, with soft white sand and blue water. We played some water sports, such as jet skiing, banana boat riding and parasailing. We also relaxed on the beach chairs and enjoyed the sun. In the evening, we joined a sunset cruise that took us around some islands. We saw many eagles flying in the sky and catching fish from the water. We also watched the sunset over the horizon and admired its beauty. On the third day, we explored some caves and mangroves in Kilim Geoforest Park. We took a boat ride through the tropical rainforest and saw many animals, such as lizards, snakes and monkeys. We also entered some mysterious caves where bats lived. It was a bit scary but exciting. The highlight of our trip was feeding eagles from our boat. The boatman threw some chicken skins into the air and attracted many eagles to come near us. They swooped down from above and grabbed their food with their claws. They looked majestic and powerful. On our last day, we went shopping at some duty-free shops in Kuah Town. Langkawi is a tax-free zone so we could buy many things at cheap prices. We bought some chocolates, wines, snacksand souvenirs for ourselves and our families. We had a great time in Langkawi and I will never forget this trip. I learned more about Malaysia's cultureand nature. I also had fun with my friends and made some new memories. I look forward to our next trip together.

I really like your analysis of this movie. I remember the conversation being brought back up when the live action was made, that Aladdin gentrifies Arab cultureand depicts Jasmine through a romanticized and exoticized lens, often reducing complex cultural elements to stereotypical imagery and tropes. This portrayal perpetuates orientalist fantasies, presenting a sanitized version of Arab culture that caters more to Western audiences' expectations than to authentic representation.
Roundtable Presentations: Aladdin (1992)
In what ways does the film's score situate the story with its narrative context?
The score makes extensive use of Middle Eastern and Arabic musical influences to establish the setting of the fictional city of Agrabah. Composer Alan Menken incorporates instruments like the oud, duduk, and ney to lend an authentic ethnic sound and flavor to the music. This helps transport the audience to the film's Arabian setting. It also uses musical themes and motifs to represent key characters and narrative elements. For example, the heroic "A Whole New World" theme is closely associated with Aladdin and Jasmine's blossoming romance, while Jafar's sinister intentions are conveyed through ominous, minor-key musical cues. These thematic associations help guide the audience through the film's story.
Tumblr media
How do songs use character performance to push the cultural authenticity in the film's diegesis?
The songs in Aladdin also use character performance to enhance the cultural authenticity of the film’s diegesis. The film mostly showcases kind of an energetic, campy-comic flair that evokes the spirit of classic Hollywood musicals. On the other hand, Jasmine's solos are more introspective, contemporary-sounding ballads that reflect her personality and desire for agency, as she lives overprotected under her father's wing.
Tumblr media
The music in Aladdin goes beyond just setting the scene. It borrows heavily from Middle Eastern musical traditions. This is clear in the prominent vocals, a common feature in Middle Eastern music. The instruments used, like percussion, strings, and wind instruments, also mirror those found in the region. Even the melodies themselves are crafted to evoke Middle Eastern music through the use of chromaticism and ornamentation, which helps capture the unique musical qualities of that part of the world. It's important to remember though, that despite the inspiration from "One Thousand and One Nights," Aladdin remains an American animated musical at its core. The music reflects this by blending these Middle Eastern influences with classic Broadway elements.
Tumblr media
In what ways does the film use musical "framing" to structure the score within familiarized styles?
The entire story itself is presented as a performance by the Genie. This echoes the traditional concept of a frame narrative, where a story is told within the context of another story.  Musically, this is reflected in the opening number, "Arabian Nights," which establishes an exotic, Arabian Nights-inspired soundscape that serves as the backdrop for the film's musical journey. Within the Arabian Nights frame, the songs incorporate familiar musical styles from various cultures and eras—which in my opinion, goes against the whole point of making this an "Arab musical film." Similar to when they make Latinx musical films from, for example, Mexico, but they include songs or influences from many Latinx countries.
Moreover, "One Jump Ahead" uses a Broadway showtune style with a fast tempo, kind of emulating Aladdin's frenetic life on the streets. On the other hand, “Prince Ali" is a big, bombastic production number with influences from Bollywood and pop music, and A Whole New World is a romantic ballad with an orchestral sound, reminiscent of classic Hollywood musicals.

the skies are golden and turn a reddish color at sunset.
there are various animals that inhabit the jungles of tamaran, the most prominently featured being telepathic animals called dragetts that can fly and communicate with those on tamaran.
they don’t eat them, they seem to only hunt them for sport but they don’t kill them.
characteristics, powers and abilities
tamaraneans are humanoid in appearance, but are recognizable due to their characteristic skin in various shades of a golden tone, for the most part, tamaraneans seem to possess curly - and v big - hair but it does come in a variety of colors. many tamaraneans also wear headdresses and have green (in all its variants) white and blue eyes, which are common among their race. as with humans, their height varies but on average they are a very tall race. most tamaraneans (with the exceptions of kings and queens it seems) wear as little clothing as possible. gauntlets and headdresses are very common.
tamaraneans are extremely powerful beings capable of amazing things. they mainly use their abilities for combat purposes but can use them for other tasks as well. many of their powers are fueled by specific emotions. most tamaraneansare born with the ability to absorb uv energy and convert it into the power of flight - there are some that are unable to fly due to birth defects of a childhood illness (like Komand’r). all tamaraneans are born with enhanced strength and the ability to linguistically assimilate. their known abilities are:

out of necessity, tamaraneans are principally a warrior culture. marriages among the citizens are apparently arranged, though this may simply be the case only for tamaranean royalty and the noble classes.
even though when kori first meets the rest of the titans she is fierce and aggressive, she quickly warms up and becomes quite perky. despite the contradiction of the warlike themes of their culture, friendship is considered very important.
this example was pulled from koriand’r’s marriage to karras, which was revealed to be a political alliance.
traditional tamaranean marriages also include taking vows of love and respect, that karras and koriand’r did not take.
society
the tamaraneans are ruled by the grand ruler of tamaran on some kind of monarchy system in which koriand’r’s family is the ruler. the government of tamaran is similar to a feudal system and each landmass is ruled by a family. tamarus - the capital of tamaran - is ruled by house tykayl, which is kory’s family. the southern states of tamaran are ruled by king tharras and queen salja. ithin each landmass, there are influential families who run city states.

The original World Trade Center was a large complex of seven buildings in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City, United States. It opened on April 4, 1973, and was destroyed in 2001 during the September 11 attacks. At the time of their completion, the Twin Towers—the original 1 World Trade Center, at 1,368 feet (417 m); and 2 World Trade Center, at 1,362 feet (415.1 m)—were the tallest buildings in the world. Other buildings in the complex included the Marriott World Trade Center (3 WTC), 4 WTC, 5 WTC, 6 WTC, and 7 WTC. The complex contained 13,400,000 square feet (1,240,000 m2) of office space.
The core complex was built between 1966 and 1975, at a cost of $400 million (equivalent to $2.27 billion in 2018).[5]During its existence, the World Trade Center experienced several major incidents, including a fire on February 13, 1975,[6] a bombing on February 26, 1993,[7] and a bank robbery on January 14, 1998.[8] In 1998, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey decided to privatize it by leasing the buildings to a private company to manage. It awarded the lease to Silverstein Properties in July 2001.[9]
On the morning of September 11, 2001, Al-Qaeda-affiliated hijackers flew two Boeing 767 jets into the North and South Towers within minutes of each other; two hours later, both towers collapsed. The attacks killed 2,606 people in and within the vicinity of the towers, as well as all 157 on board the two aircraft.[10] Falling debris from the towers, combined with fires that the debris initiated in several surrounding buildings, led to the partial or complete collapse of all the buildings in the complex, and caused catastrophic damage to ten other large structures in the surrounding area.
The cleanup and recovery process at the World Trade Center site took eight months, during which the remains of the other buildings were demolished. A new World Trade Center complex is being built with six new skyscrapers and several other buildings, many of which are complete. A memorial and museum to those killed in the attacks, a new rapid transit hub, and an elevated park have been opened. One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere at 1,776 feet (541 m) and the lead building for the new complex, was completed in November 2014.
During its existence, the World Trade Center was an icon of New York City.[11] It had a major role in popular cultureand according to one estimate was depicted in 472 films. Following the World Trade Center's destruction, mentions of the complex were altered or deleted, and several dozen "memorial films" were created.
