Today in 1962 – The Cuban missile crisis began as President Kennedy was informed that reconnaissance photographs had revealed the presence of missile bases in Cuba.

#OTD in 1962, a U-2 confirmed the presence of Soviet intermediate-range ballistic missiles in Cuba, which led to the Cuban Missile Crisis. Pictured here is the SA-2 surface-to-air missile (SAM) site under construction at La Coloma.

62 years ago today, a U-2 spy plane flying over Cuba captured these images of a Soviet missile site there, thus beginning the Cuban Missile Crisis (despite President Kennedy not being briefed on the photos until the 16th, beginning the infamous “thirteen days”).

Jack during a trip to the Midwest, October 1962🤍
After one day of travelling to different places and events, the six-state trip was cut short on October 20th. The president had to rush back to Washington due to the increasingly urgent Cuban crisis. In order to avoid public suspicion, he was diagnosed with a “cold”.

Oh no! Doc and Marty have accidentally prevented some of history's biggest events/ altered timelines! And when they realize what a negative impact it has on their present, they've got to go back and fix it!
Featuring:
🚢 Titanic - @bg-sparrow
🇨🇺 Cuban Missile Crisis - @mythical-bookworm
🎩 Lincoln Assassination - @pine-killer55
📜 Truman Assassination - @professorsaber

Got to love that the X-Men/Mutants are somehow involved in nearly every historical event.

all day today is just been eerie and trippy and creepy and cool and bizarre and odd and time is dilating and it just seems so otherworldly dream like and it persists
and we’re coming up on another day. It’s just this time of the year in October. it’s monster season as well, the missiles of October almost killed us all here. Poetic at a notion that we pick our parents & the time we’re born in order to challenge ourselves. I guess…
N E one else ready for some time otter than unprecedented type amiright?
So 62 years ago this week the entire planet and all of humanity was on the verge of nuclear annihilation over the Cuban missile crisis and 62 years ago, October 21. I was born what time to be alive Jesus!

*Jon Meacham voice*: The Cuban Missile Crisis is often characterized as when the United States and Soviet Union stood eyeball to eyeball, but I disagree with this on the grounds that, in order to be at eye level with John F. Kennedy, Nikita Khrushchev would need to be standing on several phone books.

Vasily Arkhipov received a request for a sign-off from his coworkers.
Rather than merely comply, he insisted on gathering more data and finding out what was really going on before making his decision.
And that's why we're all alive today.
Everyone say, "Thank you, Vasily."

Holiday rant
I personally don’t begin celebrating Christmas this time of year because there are too many historical anniversaries right now for me to be able to think about the holidays yet.
Like, we just finished the Cuban missile crisis and haven’t even passed the anniversary of certain events transpiring in Dallas. But this is of course merely my opinion and honestly I’d say the same thing about any other time of year (“I can’t think about school starting in a few weeks, this is the time of year that Nixon resigned!”). Happy holidays to anyone who wishes to begin celebrating now.
