Het CTM festival wordt sinds 1999 jaarlijks gehouden gedurende ongeveer 10 dagen in het begin van het jaar. CTM is vooral speciaal in het Berlijnse cultuur landschap omdat het in de programmering thema's met betrekking tot sociale en geo-politieke vraagstukken in verband brengt met de nieuwste ontwikkelingen op het gebied van vooruitstrevende muziek en kunst.

Het thema van CTM Festival 2020, 'Liminial', onderzoekt zoals het festival zelf beschrijft de overgang naar een grijze zone van een nog niet gedefineerde fase. De laatste jaren zijn veel normen en waarden van de gevestigde orde aan verandering onderhevig, of vervagen. In de fase die volgt, ontvouwt zich een besef van nieuwe mogelijkheden. 

Aan zowel gevestigde artiesten als aan opkomend talent vanuit alle hoeken van de wereld geeft het festival de ruimte voor experiment rondom dit thema. Behalve de voorstellingen en optredens maken ook veel workshops, discussiepanels en exposities deel uit van het programma. Dit diverse, uitdagende en kwalitatief hoogstaand aanbod maakt CTM ieder jaar tot een van de meest interessante festivals op de kalender.
