I had a realization today: furries are to capitalism, mainstream media, and politicians what a shoggoth is to a protagonist in an H. P. Lovecraft story.
Shoggoths are perfectly explicable within the context of the Cthulhu mythos-- artificial lifeforms created by the Elder Things with a bunch of eyes, mouths, and tentacles. But to the protagonist of a Lovecraft story-- typically closed minded and bigoted despite claiming to have some form of background in the sciences or the humanities-- they are an inexplicable horror that will drive you mad at the sight of it, so it's safer for one's brain to just shut down and not even try to comprehend it.
In the same way, capitalism and the mainstream media does not have a proper context to frame the furry fandom in. Reactionary poltiicians can claim that the furry fandom consists of neurodivergent teenagers asking for litterboxes at school, but that claim falls apart with even the slightest scrutiny. Attempts to mock the fandom or paint it as alien (see CSI's awful "Fur and Loathing" episode) are similarly ineffective, because these portrayals don't even scratch the surface of how bizarre the subcultures of furry fandom can be, and when people do decide to looking, they're either repelled by what they find or end up in the deep end.
To most people, furries are too weird to comprehend, so they don't even try to. Like, remember the MFF Chlorine Attack in 2014? Literally an incident of domestic terrorism on American soil, in Chicago, one of the main travel hubs of the USA? I distinctly remember the news anchors on NBC laughing at it because they couldn't comprehend the concept of a furry convention, and thought it was just a bunch of weirdos in animal costumes, and not victims of a terror attack.
The idea of grown-ass men, women, and enbies wanting to escape by pretending to be various species of animal is so alien to a capitalistic society, that any attempts by the mainstream to examine it just bounce off, which is also why it has never been commoditized.
Like, Netflix made a show called Bonding that tried to commodotize bondage a few years back. The Fifty Shades series made people confuse 'domestic abuse' and 'kink'. As rainbow capitalism has gained more acceptance and the rich realize that pandering to queer people works, we're seeing more and more shallow attempts at creating LGBT characters in properties that are inherently capitalistic, like the MCU or Star Wars. And what do furries get in terms of attempts at mainstream representation?
Pottersville, a 2017 Christmas Film where the main character's revelation that his wife is a furry and has been engaging in furry RP with the town's sheriff (who is played by fucking Ron "Hellboy and Slade" Perlman) drives him into a drunken rage where he creates a bigfoot hoax.
Goodness Silva, an AFAB member of the Great Lakes Avengers on Earth-616 who can turn into her male fursona.
A few one-off jokes in shows like Psych or The Venture Bros.
Joe 'I started my career by forcing people to eat roadkill' Rogan dressing up in costume-store quality wolf outfit as a joke.
This isn't to say capitalism and furries aren't incompatible, god knows I have friends who make their money off of furry art, furry writing, and fursuit making. But I'm pretty sure that if someone like Elon Musk, Lauren Boebert or Tucker Carlson found out that people got turned on by the thought of being eaten by Tony the Tiger, they would stop being able to process reality for at least a little bit.

Ya know, looking back? I am amazed how many LGBT+ characters there are in CSI Crime Scene Investigation. As well as mental illness/disability/handicap represention on the victim, criminal, bystanders.
As a high functioning mentally disabled demi-bi person? I freaking love this more than I did as a kid. (yes I was a weird kid who watched CSI after homework was done, bite me)

All the yes to your last paragraph!! I agree that a lot of fic that does explore kink with Ray doesn't quite hit the right note for me. Ray sees himself as a smooth operator and a romantic, I can see him being into kinks that emphasize decadence and sensuality. He seems to have a preference for strong women, some in roles of authority, so maybe control is something he's comfortable playing with, but he absolutely would avoid physical violence.
And of course the Duck Boys set up the leather Mountie. The real question is why the costume was so readily available in Chicago, lol.
The whole Chicago Holiday episode is such a time capsule. I was alive in the 90s and definitely remember how kinky sex and LGBT issues were handled in comedy type shows. Not positively overall, that's for sure! I think Due South was ahead of its time in Fraser and perhaps Elaine's behavior, and very representative of the time in Ray, Welsh, the Duck Boys, and the more in-your-face club patrons. I don't think they started to show more nuance, interestingly, until CSI and the Lady Heather character.
A lot of Ray's behavior in retrospect, especially the worst of his Othering speech, feels a lot like repression and trying to deflect attention from himself. I doubt that's what the writers were going for, but it's a lot of fun to play with now!
Thanks for some fun discussion @pigtailedgirl! Our Ray Vecchio Day talks started to feel like prime Livejournal days for a minute there!
Ray Vecchio opinion/headcannon: Ray doesn't have a problem with the BDSM/leather kink, but he does have an issue with the scene. What I mean by that is, Ray only seems to mind that the suggestive behavior is between strangers, or by strangers directed at him.
Ray complains to Huey and Gardino in their car about their smoking, not about any patrons they see come and go. He speaks professionally to leather!mountie cop, and doesn't seem phased by his look, when even Fraser does a double take. (Of course, Ray might have seen the guy earlier and was already past his initial shock. Also, Ray worked in Vice and has a background in undercover, had he played the leather!cop role himself before?)
Ray looks upset with Fraser during the raid, and there could be a lot of explanations for that. Annoyed Fraser was in a club at all? That Ray left his stakeout to bring Fraser formal wear only to find him in a club? That Fraser allowed a minor to get into a club? But he basically just tells Fraser to get in the transport van; they don't have an argument. He is absolutely upset, but he still asks Welsh to get Fraser out of trouble for the raid.
Ray is noticeably impatient and uncomfortable with the bar patrons trying to bring him into their play. When people Ray doesn't know encourage him to tighten their cuffs or be rough, he tries unsuccessfully to shut their comments down. Ray certainly isn't friendly with the patrons like Fraser is, but he doesn't call the patrons names (like Welsh does). He makes the arrests, and I won't lie, I'm confused what law they supposedly broke, but the arrests seem to be understandable to all the cops of the era. So while the law is likely considered stupid to modern audiences, the only contemporary character to think this is excessive or odd is Elaine (who I don't think went to police academy since she's civilian).
Many writers seem to see Ray's behavior in the leather club as super disrespectful. I'm not claiming he was perfect, but I've always read his behavior as uncomfortable, not disgusted, but YMMV.
With all that said, Ray is very flippant in The Promise, speaking of Louise St. Laurant. "Ah, so she likes handcuffs" in reference to himself being incarcerated. Which hints at Ray being willing to use the cuffs for roleplay as long as this is a person he knows, is dating, and trusts to some degree.
So, like, writers feel free to make Ray kinkier. Just know the kink negotiations before the main event are probably pretty intense.
