Changing the format compared to last year, a lot more has happened this year than the last one. There is also much more I would want to touch upon (like STATS :D), but that'd make this post way too long (already the Post-Mortem of The Thick Table Tavern last month was a lot).

Below is the TLDR. Here is Part 2. The Stats are in Part 3. And the Future is in Part 4 (TBP).

Last September, I had made a little Schedule for the End of the Year. Obviously, I was way off. I only published/updated half of the things I said I would, and ended up putting out new smaller (more fun, less frustrating for me) projects instead.

Next year's expectations is to... finish my WIPs (starting the smallest ones to have them off my desk). I have too many projects in my hands, and it's not sustainable. I've been preaching about not having too may WIPs, but don't even follow my advice. My goal is to have by the end of the year only Crimson Rose & White Lily, SPS Iron Hammer, and The Thick Table Tavern still unfinished (TTATEH is dependent on MelS's progress more than mine). Knowing me, I'll try to squeeze a few Jams/Comps entry anyway...

thanks for your answer. that reminds me, sometime last year someone on the forum announced a project to make a twine to cscript converter. it's supposed to translate code from one language to the other. the thread has not been updated to my knowledge, but i hope they get to finish it

I'll be honest, they might have bitten off more than they can chew.

While it's possible to have a lot be neigh identical, there's several instances in code that aren't easily converted.

Flavourtext is one such occasion. In Cscript you'd have a choice, flavourtext and then the regular text. In twine, in order to achieve the same effect you will either have to make a whole separate bit for the flavourtext and then continue to the main text, or make a new variable to have everything in one bit. So simple converting isn't much an option. And i can imagine trying to make a converter that covers such issues to be quite a pain.

first sorry i haven’t been around much this week but i’ve been completely exhausted, i’ll be more active once i finally get a decent sleep schedule again.

sadly i haven’t done much this week buuuut i do have a general idea for the and a simple outline? for the prologue. even then i have abt 600ish words written right now, not much i know but once i fix myself and get a decent sleep schedule again, i want to aim for abt maybe 1k words every few days until the prologue is complete. doesn’t sound like much but i’m a slow worker and work best when i’m not forcing myself to do it.

romance options- i’ve been working on the romance options a bit and rewriting better introductions for them. they won’t be changed too much but their intros will be written better with a bit more info maybe.

overall story? i have several ideas for how i want the story to go, the idea i’m kinda leaning towards will probably make me add another romance option and if i do decide on that one, then they’ll be added when i edit the romance options introductions

coding- i’ve been playing around with cscript and twine, and at first i was leaning towards using twine but so far cscript has been so much more easier for me to understand. so at the moment i’m thinking i’ll be using cscript until i eventually get the hang of twine. but if you guys prefer twine, then i think i’ll just spend more time with twine instead. so like which do you guys prefer games written/coded with twine or cscript?

not dwtd related but i’ve been working on one of the ideas for another story i had in my drafts and it’s taken over every thought in my head for the past few days. the intro post is not finished yet but even when it’s finished i probably won’t post until i make significant progress with dwtd’s prologue. or if i feel like i’m making more progress with that one instead.

hello saw your last post about ADHD and thought i’d ask i know this might not be the right place to ask so if you want to ignore this or do not know how to answer this i understand, i’ve been working on project and i tried to learn coding i’m still trying watching more videos on it but i am starting to feel stupid because my brain genuinely cannot process any of that information i really cannot understand no matter what and am this close to giving up so i thought maybe if i could find someone that can help me with coding if anyone is willing to do that like i can pay them through paypal

So, as a person with ADHD myself (Roast, hi), I get it! It's frustrating, confusing, and information you just read just goes right out the window--but me and the other mods encourage you to learn.

Coding isn't easy, it's a different language and should be treated as such--you're not going to pick it up in a week or even a month, but once you know it you'll be able to navigate it a lot easier.

I'd suggest going back to basics, making sure you've got those down before moving on. If videos aren't working for you (I know they don't really for me) I'd move to written tutorials as well as code-diving on sites that you like their aesthetic of. Start with a project that's not related to your game like a simple webpage and fiddle with the code.

Doing has always been a better educator for me than sitting there trying to absorb knowledge through lecture. I don't remember anything that gets told at me, hello high school and college--but doing has always been better.

If you're working with HTML & CSS it's difficult! But there are resources for you and we also have a lot of helpful people over in our discord server that are happy to help, myself and other mods included.

Also, you might want to try checking out your local library, they might have access to professionally made instructional videos that all you'll need to get in on them is a library card.

TL;DR Slow down, switch to different learning abilities if videos aren't working for you, write things down but only the necessary and keep it brief, for me writing notes needs to be succinct or else my brain just goes fuzzy--and keep those notes on hand while you work, I had to reference them loads of times before getting used to cscript.

Freecodecamp is a bit more class-based but I'd give it a shot, same with Mimo because it leads you through projects to learn code instead of just throwing information at the wall and hoping it sticks. [Freecodecamp] [Mimo]

JSfiddles and codepen are both sites that let you play around with code without actually implementing it on a webpage--so fiddle to your heart's content! [Jsfiddle] [Codepen.io]

If you can afford it, skillshare also has great starter videos, I learned the CSS grid just this weekend with a video on there, they might have some free trials going on too. [Skillshare]

If, in the end, you just don't want to learn it/can't get a hold of it, that's okay. There are tutors out there and maybe even someone in our community who would be willing to help tutor you, but you can also put up posting for coders--but that is a contract job position and should be treated seriously with proper pay. I'd really really encourage you to take a break, take a step back, but with the intent of learning because that is way more empowering than paying someone else to do it.

With ADHD it's often trying to find what kind of adaptive skills you need to get it through to your brain, and every person with ADHD is different in that regard. For me, I have three different planners that I look at every day, writing things down helps with the permanence issue if not the out-of-sight-out-of-mind issue.

Will I remember what I wrote down? Nope! Will I look down and see it if I leave my planners open and therefore remember? You betcha!

Honestly, I think Twine offers a lot more than CScript, from UI customization to (possible) game mechanics. CS is just kinda simplistic?

Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, but if an author wants to put something more interesting/complex (whether that be a mechanic or something graphics related) in their game, CS isn't all that good. It's been designed to be basic and easy to use tbh. So imo if you think that you want to play around a lot with CiE and its mechanics then I'd say switching to Twine would be worth it. It's hard to understand at first (at least it was for me) but once you get the hang of it, it's super fun and rewarding to use. Like, I've seen authors make whole ass interactive maps in their Twine games. You just can't do something like that in CS.

Regarding the mobile compatibility, I'm pretty sure there are tutorials on that + mobile-friendly game templates, so I //think// it should be alright. It's the biggest con of Twine I can think of tbh. But honestly I think the pros outweigh the cons? Like the possible customization, mechanics, a functioning save system (which should be in all games imho) and Itch being so creator friendly (only taking a 10% cut from sales) makes up for it, I think.

But whatever you choose, we'll keep supporting you and the game, so don't worry about that! Do whatever you think is best for you and your game.

Yes to everything you've said here and I've said largely the same thing to other people trying to choose between CS and Twine before. and i'm glad you bring up Itch 'cause i've sort of been beating myself up for dragging my feet in getting this IF writing gig properly going (but I'm trying to stop because depression, PTSD, and CDD are no fucking joke), but I'm ultimately glad I have. Because, at least for a consumer and creator like me, there is no contest between Ko-fi vs. Patreon, Itch vs. Choice of Games, and Twine vs. ChoiceScript. At least not when it comes to IP ownership, creative control, and sales cuts. Stuff I def didn't realize only a few months ago. I still really like the simplicity of CS and I guess... well, I do know there's one project that is short and simple enough that I wouldn't even want to code it in Twine. So, I guess there's always that one...

I have the character creation (minus one variation) and the intro ready to be coded. I am currently working on the second drink of the 2-drinks tutorial (should be done by the end of the day, yay!).

After this is coded, the Bar mini/main game will be completely ready (i hope) and I can use the 20 days left to finish writing and adding NPCs to the game.

I still need to think how much you need to "beat" the game and reach your goal and how many coins you get per drinks...

Also (and if possible) I would want to have multiple difficulty :

Easy, where unless you don't read what's on the screen you shouldn't be able to fail

Medium, where restarting drinks will give you a penalty

Hard, where you have a timer on top of it all

Extreme, if you mess up the drink you get fired? (that might be a reach)
