anuyway i want to enjoy citizen sleeper 2 but it is giving me the same problems as the first but worse jd;lfldjskf. with the first i felt that i couldn't really take the story slow because any time a character indicated i had a new task to do, i would very anxiously speed ahead because there are so many variables you have to have set in order to have a good chance of completing the task in time. so i wouldn't actually read the rest of the story piece lol. and with cs2 the mechanics are SO MUCH MORE COMPLICATED so i'm even more inclined to anxiously speed through to the task.
i'm playing on easy mode and still struggling so goddamn much but i guess maybe a difference is that if all your dice break you don't die in easy but you die in a harder mode? bc from what i did hear i was expecting to die and did not. so i just kinda disheartenedly sped through a bunch of OTHER stuff waiting for a death screen but it never came...... so............................ idk.
i wanna get ~back in touch~ with the characters who are there from the first game and it does hit hard when they do cross paths but i am just so annoyed at how much is stacked against us in ways that kind of interfere with sinking into the story. i think i just gotta restart honestly and see where that lands me now that i have a slightly better idea of what's needed, but i still don't think that'll help with the bad luck player punishments.

this is super cool! Apparently newer NASA projects have local simulated versions so engineers can run code tests, but Voyager 1 is old enough that they were relying on code that wasn’t even digitized !
The issue was that some memory was corrupted (potentially by cosmic interference) and they needed to relocate all the code running on and using that section - which is trickier than redoing everything imo . When you start from scratch you know where everything is , but when you’re reconfiguring existing code you have no certainty over what is using what ! They had to write code based on paper documentation in limited memory space without testing on a local version - and it worked !
Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1
The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.
So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.
So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.
Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.
And the probe is working again.
From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.

@rlydsntmttr !!!!!!!!!
Every now and then I remember that Malbolge exists and I get to spend the better part of an hour cry-laughing at the world’s worst programming language
Tumblr media
already starting off strong, but it gets worse
Tumblr media
Wow! Sounds easy and intuitive to use! What’s the “crazy operation” you ask? We’ll get to that later. For now let’s see what a program in this language looks like :)
Tumblr media
Thanks! I hate it!
Tumblr media
it’s so difficult to work with that the first program was written by another brute force search program
Tumblr media
mmmmm delicious base-3 arithmetic, what could go wrong? (For reference, that means this program forgoes the usual 0/1″ values of binary code in favor of a much more fun “0/1/2″ set of values)
Tumblr media
ah.
Tumblr media
Here’s how the language actually figures out what to do. It’s got 8 “simple” commands that can be executed easily by *checks notes* running the code itself through the modulo operation and taking the result.
Tumblr media
As a bonus, on top of all that every single character in your code will now alter what every single other character does. So I hope you’re alright with cracking a cipher every time you add a new letter to your program!
Tumblr media
oh god oh fuck.
Tumblr media
behold, Malbolge’s primary arithmetic operation and what you’ll be using for most of your math while programming with it :)
This looks specifically designed to be the least logical math operation you could make, and knowing what the rest of Malbolge is I’d wager that’s precisely what happened. I never want to ever use this and it’s my favorite thing I’ve ever seen.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malbolge
Anyways here’s the wiki page if you wanna read through it more deeply, I’m gonna sit here holding in my laughter staring at the hello world program again.

thinking about being an intern at the DSO and one day, hunnigan is out, so you’re giving intel to leon…he’s expecting some stiff, protocol-obsessed analyst, but you’re on comms with the agent kennedy himself.
and he’s like, “you’re the backup? you don’t look a day out of college.” so of course you have to respond, “first of all, rude. second of all, i just saved your ass. you’re welcome, agent kennedy.”
this man. this giant flirt of a man says, “sweetheart, you can call me leon,” giving you the most exaggerated wink ever.
maybe after a mission you’re finishing up some security reports, and who swings by other than the (very battered but handsome) leon kennedy himself? he looks around the empty office and goes, “still working?”and you groan. after all, we can’t all be hotshot agents out on the field.
“you know,” he says, “i might’ve underestimated you, rookie. i didn’t realize i was talking to the best analyst here.”
he’s off for a few weeks after that mission and always makes sure to swing by your desk under the guise of checking up on intel, and you can’t help but push his buttons a little! listen, man! it’s not everyday a kind, funny, stunning guy like him comes along!
and maybe, just maybe, one day, he’s staying overtime again to help you finish up (always the intern that has to do the dirty work on a friday night). he’s exhausted, you’re exhausted, and he slips up. you’re chatting about your weekend plans when he asks, “wanna get dinner tomorrow?”
then it’s your turn to get him flustered. as you’re leaving, you give him a kiss on the cheek—something innocent enough to leave him wanting more. “i’d love to, agent kennedy.”
