A/N: The Rescue is a one shot fic I wrote for Captain Swan January Joy 2021 before that it was a prompt from a Wander Over Yonder episode for a good couple of years. Though I do like my one shot version I will admit I rushed the ending so I am now writing it as a multi chapter on AO3.

alright, here it is: ZENO'S COLOR GUIDE 3.0 !

here, i'll have three "chapters" regarding color:

CH1: how i color in illustrations

CH2: color and character design (in zeno's case)

CH3: how zeno makes his colors cooler

CH1: HOW I COLOR IN ILLUSTRATIONS

it must be noted that, as of lately, i heavily use halftones in my art and the way i use them for gradients effects my color choices. of course you don't need to use halftones if you don't want to, as it's just my personal choice, but anything regarding halftones here could (probably) also apply to regular gradients!

when choosing colors in an illustration, i usually have three things in mind: mood, character, and contrast. we'll be using "gloomy bunny naptime" as an example here.

MOOD: what's the vibe of the piece? for example, here in "gloomy bunny naptime", wanted a mellow, sleepy vibe, so purples and pinks seemed like the best choice. these colors also have a dreamy effect due to being common in real-life early mornings/summer nights - basically, i tend to use associative colors in illustrations.

i usually only use a pallete of 3-7 colors, though of course more characters calls for more colors. for multi-character pieces, i would actually make a "rainbow" of colors based on the mood of the piece - essentially, a bank of colors to use for your colorful casts based on the actual rainbow. you can alter this based on the saturation levels you want! hope that makes sense. i'm not the best at this though, so i would heavily recommend looking for guides from artists who are more skilled in that department.

CHARACTER: velvet is the focus of the piece, and as a character her palette is made up of many purples and pinks. of course, it's easier because she and ribbon both have similar designs, but i would still recommend using colors based on/complementary to the focus character's pallete, though this is a rule that can and should be broken if needed. gradients can be used to provide a smooth transition from color-to-color and add depth to the piece, as well as showcase velvet's pallete. when making any gradient, you probably want to have a vibrant middle color. this is difficult to achieve in most art programs, so i'd do it like this:

you can use gradients in lots of cool ways to make stuff pop! (i think this collage shows i use too much purple and pink though.)

CONTRAST: the context of the piece also aids the color through contrast. (that's a lot of Cs!)- we see that velvet is just waking up, and the light from her switch is glowing brightly. i wanted to convey something like her switch suddenly turning on in the middle of the night, waking her up - so the console emits "light" in the form of illuminating the contrasting color of pink against the purples. it might seem specific to this piece, but what i'm trying to say is that contrasting colors can lead the eye to the focal point of the piece, that being velvet herself. because a great deal of the rest of the piece is dark, we look at the contrasting switch screen - the brightest thing in frame - and our eyes move around and up to take in the focal point character. at least that's how i wanted it to be ;w; i guess you could convey it as something like this?

CH2: COLOR AND CHARACTER DESIGN (IN ZENO'S CASE)

this is where i start to get annoying, so stand back! when deciding on colors for a cast of characters, there are many factors: time period, variety, personality, and more that i can't think of.

TIME PERIOD: this one is simple. for example, a futuristic time period (such as that in x-calibur) calls for colder colors, such as greens and blues. for characters involved in futuristic professions such as space exploration, this works incredibly well. for modern time periods, less focus can be on colors and more on the shapes of the clothes, but this is not a shapes tutorial! i don't have any ancient times oc stories, but i'd probably use earthy and warm tones.

VARIETY: this is also rather simple. i try to be aware of the palletes that i used, and the similarities they might have with other characters. i try to use similar colors for characters who belong to certain organisations or have a uniform, but of course, it's not like catholic school students adhere their entire look to their uniform, so this is a rule that can be broken yet again. art is all about learning things and breaking them, remember that!!!

color can also be used for symbolism. my absolute fav example for this is vivica and octavia - the amount of red in their designs is supposed to represent the amount of freedom/passion/anger/confidence they have or are allowed to express under their different circumstances. as vivica belongs to a strict organisation, she has far less red in her design, showing her emotions are stifled - meanwhile octavia has it as her main complementary color because of her freedom to express her emotions, though those emotions may be destructive because of her circumstances.

PERSONALITY: what colors are associated with your character's personality? i actually usually refer to magical girl groups to see what's commonly associated with different colors. here's the main trend:

red: hot-headed, passionate, firey

orange/yellow: bright, happy-go-lucky, sunshine personality

green: wise, mellow, kind

blue: serene, graceful, elegant

purple: magical, regal, fancy

pink: usually the main character (though this because magical girl anime tends to be marketed towards young girls), sweet, relatable, determined

of course these are only stereotypes from one genre of anime, and different colors have tons of different meanings. color theory is the best way to learn this! these colors can also express different moods, which ties into ch1. i myself constantly ignore these rules - v-con, a bombastic hyper DJ, is purple (though he does have yellow accents) for example. basically, i just take them as a general rule and try to have them in mind while drawing.

CH3: HOW ZENO MAKES HIS COLORS COOLER

this might be the most important part of this guide. once again, there are a few things to consider here: filters, hue, overlays, and more!

FILTERS: for ibispaint, you can use an adjustment layer on your whole piece to use a filter. i usually only use brightness/contrast here - upping the brightness (or darkening it based on the mood of the piece) and upping the contrast. this helps to better express values and intensify the colors if that's what you want. i often use it in all my pieces to some extent.

hue/saturation/lightness is also helpful in moderation. you can alter the hue - though it usually only helps if you bring it back or forward by just a few points, or the entire pallete will change. saturation is what it sounds like, and slightly over/desaturating the piece can help with atmosphere. lightness is what it sounds like - lightens the colors in the piece. i don't use it at all.

posterize and sharpen mask are some that i've used recently. posterize can add some crazy effects to your art, but i'd probably need to edit it slightly after using it because it can mess with certain colors.

HUE: it's a layer type that can change the overall hue of the piece. i usually use it at a low percentage for atmosphere. kind of like a gradient map but nothing like it? idk

and OVERLAYS: i just use a very saturated blue/purple color over the entire piece at a very low percentage, around 5-10%. it can wash out the piece at too high a percentage.

and that's basically it! sorry it kind of derailed at the end i spent like 2 hours on this and got super tired. goodnight i'm going to sleep please also look at other artists etc etc. bye.

As for the second ask, and while we're on the topic of Finley: I think the only characters I really have literature down for are Finley and Florence, as they share a love for adventure and mystery, as well as for what by all means falls under Sci-Fi.

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Yes, I do. I am always thrilled when someone has taken the time to read my words and tell me their thoughts. The least that I can do is thank them. (Also, it fuels the muse a bit. Sometimes, fic writing feels a bit...lonely? You are so excited about this idea or these characters, but people in your immediate vicinity or in your life are less excited about it, and you wonder if you are the only person affected by them or who cares about the story brewing in your head about them. It is so, so reassuring and delightful to get a comment from someone else impacted by these characters and your words/thoughts about them.

What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?

Oh, likely the ACOMAF story - Slipping Away

What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?

All the CS fics? I don't mind putting CS through a bit of Hell, but they always work it out in the end because I cannot hurt them anymore than the writers (and @nachocheese-itsmycheese) already do. (Also, that is an endorsement for nachocheese-itsmycheese. If you need to feel something, go read her fics.)

Do you write crossovers?

I have a crack fic that is a cross-over in a way. It is OUAT meets Hoaring: Buried Alive.

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

I wrote fics for Twilight and Lord of the Rings in middle school and high school. One of the Twilight fics (on FF.net) got a comment along the lines of you should k**l yourself.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes. And, yes?

Most of the published smut thus far is a fairly sweet and loving. But, I have a few scenes written that are a bit less "vanilla".

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Nope, but I have a few readers who have other languages. I would love to see one translated.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I've started a couple with people, but never really finished any. I have cowritten many a published engineering/scientific article and report, so I like having more authorial control and voice in my fic writing.

What's your all time favorite ship?

Captain Swan? Yeah, probably Captain Swan...

What's a WIP you want to finish but don't think you ever will?

I know my readers probably think all of my open multi-chapter fics, but it is likely the fic that I have started from Emma and Killian's fairy godmother's POV.

What are your writing strengths?

Oh, I am terrible at talking about my strengths. (You should see the first draft of my Chartership application.)

Maybe... my ability to tell pull you into a story without to much presence. In that, I use few words to tell the story and give the reader the space to dream up finer details.

I am a bit of an experimental author, so I hope that it gives the readers something unique and fun to experience in every story.

What are your writing weaknesses?

I am a slow fic writer. I will plot a story, love the plot, write the story (painfully slowly), and write a completely different plot, which slows my writing even more. I think in both pictures and words - when I write, I see the picture so vividly that I agonise over every word to ensure the feeling and key parts of the picture are translated correctly. Also, I think I tend to do the Steve Moffitt awful thing of building up something nicely and then failing on the delivery. I am working on having as much energy and excitement at the completion of a story as I do at the start to aid in that.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in fics?

I know pieces of other languages and have been known to use them when I felt like they would fit better. I am so interested in languages and cultures other than my own that I love finding ways to draw them into my work.

Hey princess! i need some advice for my blog. I’m a fanfic writer, i have been for years, so i’m used to writing really detailed descriptions about appearances and what not, but i fear if i wrote the way i usually do on my blog, i won’t be as inclusive as i want to be. I have plans for a big multi chapter fic that is essentially my own personal fantasy and ideas, & i often have a description of her in my mind when i’m writing it, like an OC of sorts, bc it helps me see things a little clearer and imagine the scene better, but i’m just scared that i can’t write in a way that people are going to feel seen & included. Im fine with not writing skin color or facial features, but as far as hair and clothing, i don’t think i can’t not write that. I’m just really stumped on what to do about that cs i want everyone to feel comfortable on my blog, & be able to read my work & feel congenial qualities, but i also don’t think i know how to write characters that don’t have at-least some kind of physical appearance. & you’re very good at keeping your work inclusive while also keeping bits of yourself in your writing, so i’d really appreciate some advice!.

hey hun !! so i understand the concern n what you’re tryna say . in my opinion, i think it’s okay if you make it clear that it’s a fic with an OC instead of just tagging it as reader as it may ruin the immersion of some people if they’re blind sided by a sudden physical description. i’d just make sure you state in the ‘content warning’ or description of the fic that there will be physical descriptions as you have created a character, and that if that’s not someone’s typa thing they should just scroll on :) 🩷

The Strongest Magic - This short MC is one of your very early works - a Neverland season 3a divergent tale, but where it diverges gives us powerful adventure and emotion, sacrifice, and much earlier admission and acceptance of the love between our Pirate and Princess. I simply adore it - it squeezes your heart for sure, but it also wraps you up in a wonderful happy ending by the time you are finished.

A Wish Your Heart Makes , Getting to I Do & Mysterious Fathoms Below - This series of longer, connected multi-chapters (The "By Land or By Sea" trilogy) is simply EPIC!!! I don't know how to sing the praises of this story half as much as it deserves. There's adventure in the Enchanted Forest, Camelot, and even under the sea! There's so much beautiful love story for CS (and even some lovely, redemptive Outlaw Queen as well), and @whimsicallyenchantedrose even incorporates some unexpected and perfectly cast characters of myth and legend and her own creation alongside our faves. I don't want to give too much away, but these stories MUST BE read! Once you do, you'll want to read them over and over again.

Happily Ever After - This short MC was originally part of your Fluffy Fridays compilation, and I have often revisited the few chapters of this on their own and definitely think of them as their own little stand-alone story. I love the family recipes, the competition, the rivalry that becomes something much sweeter.... it's a truly delicious addition to your collection of writing!

Caribbean Shores - This lovely little MC reads more like a modern day AU, though they are in Storybrooke and many of our favorite characters still appear. I love the cute sweetness of this one, and the adorable addition of a few scheming cuties from MM's class when she takes them for a field trip tour of the Jolly Roger from Killian. ;) All the sizzle and attraction is there for Emma and Killian right from the start, and though she tries to resist (Why is she always so stubborn?!?) She can't do it for long...

Under the Apple Tree - It's hard to even express how much I adore this fic originally written between season six and season seven of canon. The way @whimsicallyenchantedrose wove in what we knew might be coming in season seven and then supposed what still could happen (a lot of which I would have loved to really see!) is simply brilliant. I love the relationships explored and the way the plot unfolds. It's a special and unique version of our beloved characters, and of course the unstoppable power of Captain Swan to always find each other again is fully on display too! ;p

Until the Stars are all Alight - Wow, this story must have been such a daunting task to undertake - one I would have been afraid to tackle, but the skill with which the OuaT world and the LotR world are woven together, how the plotlines come together and reach fruition, and how the characters coincide for best use so seamlessly is truly admirable and just adds to the depth and power of this full multi-chapter adventure. It has heart and hope and True Love conquering all - all the best things we love so much from the world of fairy tales and the brain of J.R. R. Tolkien!

I don't mind talking about upcoming plans for the OCs' stories so I'm happy you asked!

The next few chapters of Karasu's story are outlined. Part Four involves MC's tentative pact with Mammon and how that affects their developing relationship with Karasu. It goes into a bit of Karasu's backstory with Mammon and some insight into Karasu's opinions of pacts in general. I play a bit fast and loose with the canon story and pact order after that. I've mentioned this before, but Levi's pact is a long way off. That being said, the Dogi Maji game shenanigans in Lesson 10 becomes a critical turning point in their relationship progression. 👀

Karasu's Nightbringer story is being re-written now that I have the entire past plot to work with. I'm leaving the existing ficlets as they are since I wrote them for fun and like them as their own standalone thing. I do have an outline in the works that follows the NB canon right up to Lesson 40. It's going to be a longer one-shot rather than a multi-chapter fic.

The outline for Azra's entire S1 AU is practically done. It focuses less on canon events and more on the significant milestones in their relationship while MC is in the Devildom. I thought about re-writing Part Two's premise but now I'm not sure if I want to do that either. The original idea was a bit corny but also hilarious? I might keep it the way it is.

And since I'm already talking about OC stuff, let's cover the others too:

I have some brief ideas outlined for Zee's AU but nothing post-ready yet, which is why I'm trying to include him in the multi-character OC posts so he can still get some love. There are certain tropes/scenarios I haven't written about for other characters public sex period sex that apply to Zee, so at least I have some stuff to write about in the meantime.

I have the first part of Tenebris's AU outlined, but it needs some tweaking to reflect additions/changes I've made to his character and story (I originally wrote that outline like, a year ago). His SFW/NSFW Alphabets are in the works too.

Most of my focus for Metatron lately has been fleshing out his past and current standing in the Celestial Realm. I've had a lot of fun writing about his volatile history with Azra and how that will eventually tie into whatever present-day AU I write for him. In the meantime, he'll pop up in some of the Celestial Realm-based writing (he's already made a couple cameos and he's very good at making the other angels jealous lol).

Lost Warriors of Elysium

When Peter Parker accidentally kickstarts the unraveling of the universe (Spider-Man: No Way Home), the remaining Infinity Stones & Deities are forced to act, the Time Stone, rather known as Aika, pays a visit to Stephen Strange, her Zakar. With that, they rewind time back to a time of great need, specifically Tony's time of great need, when he is lost in Rose Hill Tenessee with little Harley Keener. Aika moves Strange's training back so that he is still a sorcerer.

The Zakars and their respective Gods recollect, and start planning for their future threats. But are they prepared for what trouble Elysium and its dangers will bring to them?

“Zakar mine, it seems as though you have an.. infatuation with Hankali’s Zakar.” Kifo teleports near Bucky, poking and prodding at him. “He's very handsome isn't he? Oh! And what vigorous muscles he has, and shant we forget his hands, Loki Mine?” Kifo grins wickedly, watching as Loki jumps and glares at him, not noticing how Bucky’s cheeks flush the lightest red and smirks.

I’m going through a “reading all the CS fics I can” phase and I JUST remembered you’re ao3 account and when I tell you that you are THE BEST. like you are unmatched and I don’t think I have come across an author I love more. You’re fics are so magical and Iove how you characterize Emma especially. I just started Out Of The Frying Pan and it’s so cute!!

Anyway, I just think I just wanted to ramble about how you’re the best. Also I saw that you wrote a Bridgerton fic and was wondering If you’d ever write in that fandom again? (no pressure to actually write more bridgerton btw!! I was just curious<3 )

anon, i showed this message to my husband. that's how nice it was. and also partially why it's taken so long to answer. the other reason (and the answer itself, really) is that... i would love to write more bridgerton. or... anything. ever. i live in want of the time and/or desire to finish that ouat time travel/pirate/soulmate fic i was writing and posted the first chapter of and then just stopped. same for the bellarke big bang i just never posted. and, like, all those blue line stories. there are so many blue line stories, anon.

the (mostly) short story, my dear anon, is that a little over a year ago, we made our second multi-state move in the last three years and then, about, four months ago i moved into a much bigger, time-consuming role at my job that we moved all those states for. which leaves me here: working a sometime 9-5 but also a job that revolves around sports, which happen on nights and weekends and traveling sometimes and i absolutely love it, but i also am very tired, like, all the time now, and really my only creative ability when i'm not getting paid to be creative is to read the absolutely trashiest trash i can find on kindle unlimited.

so, for now — the answer is probably no. but it warms the cockles of my very soul that people are still reading the words i shoved at the internet and enjoying them and sending very nice messages.
