This colored pencil piece was done on a colored surface. Can you tell what color it was from the finished piece? My favorite way to use colored pencil is on a not white, textured surface. Which is a pretty unpopular opinion among colored pencil artists. I feel very inadequate at the task of capturing a lost loved one in paint. I pray about the work often. I try my very best to get it right. Every hour used to learn and practice from a lifetime of study comes into play. I take an awful long time dabbing paint here, gently pushing water there. I hope to capture part of the spirit of the beloved person. This has been my whole world this week. And I have loved every minute of it. I took most of the week off, unexpectedly, to care for my little boy in his recovery from his tonsil surgery. Which basically meant filling up his Harry Potter cup with apple juice, blending up slushies for him, cuddling on the couch and finding lost stuffed puppies, and trying to get him to eat popsicles like I was a dealer. It's been several years since my kids were tiny and needed me this much. I forgot how much I missed being the whole entire world to this tiny human I made. . I'm grateful for my art, and this little business I've built, that gave me a place to feel wanted and needed and find joy in creating when my kids were all in school all day and I was left not quite sure what to do with myself. I'm grateful for the flexibility to take time off when I need it. And I'm grateful for you guys, being loyal as heck and supporting me through it all. . This week I'll be working more, I have so many ideas to get to and works to finish. Thank you for giving me the time I needed with my kiddo. Love you all. I guess it's safe to start sharing some of my Christmas commissions! I tried to remember to take WIP pics, but I was either pressed for deadlines or too absorbed in the painting process to remember. But I did get a few! . This beautiful soul was a memorial portrait I was honored to paint this year. Whenever I do memorial work I always ask my client to tell me about the person I'm painting. From what my client told me this woman was accepting and kind, loved her family so much, and also so freaking funny! I loved painting her.
