🦇 The Torchwood Fan Fests HALLOWEEN FEST is back! 🦇

October has arrived, a date which marks the return of the spookiest of all our fests. Back from its unholy rest, having clawed it way out of its own grave, is the one, the only, the newly undead Halloween Fest!

Starting today, October 1st, and until November 6th we will be doing the 2022 edition of our Halloween Fest 🎃

This fest doesn’t require signing up! All you have to do is create a halloween-themed fanwork and submit it to us at any point up to November 6th 2022. (Please remember to add any relevant content warnings!)

We are providing 20 optional prompts for this fest. We provide these prompts with the intention of helping creators by hopefully sparking some interesting ideas; however, we will not require that submissions fit into one of them, so long as they fit the general theme of Halloween. You can take them or leave them!

The prompts are: 1) horror classics, 2) myths and fairytales, 3) halloween traditions, 4) creature feature, 5) witches, 6) cryptids, 7) body horror, 8) cursed objects, 9) precognition, 10) scary settings, 11) haunted, 12) undead, 13) existential horror, 14) spooky classics, 15) doppelgangers, 16) taken by the rift, 17) possession, 18) nightmare, 19) dark wonderland/freakshow, and 20) trapped/hunted.

All types of fanworks are accepted for this fest, with the usual requirements:  the minimum word count for writing is 500 words (fic, meta, not!fic, and headcanons; poetry is exempt from this requirement), 30 seconds is the minimum length for videos, and 3-songs plus a short explanation for why you picked each song  is the minimum for music playlists. If you have an idea for a fanwork that seems unconventional or less common, send us an ask! We welcome all types of content for this fest and we will be happy to hear from you :)

A trope that I would refuse to write would definitely be ABO T.T It's not because I don't like it, it's just that I seriously don't know how it works T.T I haven't consumed much ABO fics to know certain characteristics of the trope, so I will DEFINITELY pass on it. Love the concept of it though, just don't know how in the world the ABO universe works.

...I might sound weird but I mostly listen to classical music when I write with occasional sad music for the angst feels T.T But if I'm writing triplet-centered works, OHOHOHO THIS PLAYLIST COMES INTO PLAY MYEHEHEHE. @cheesy-cryptid and I (well, mostly her) put this playlist together for our dear triplets!

It will forever be in my books that Dolores knows that Bruno is behind the walls. I know that Jared Bush had said that Dolores only got a gut feeling, but to me Bruno asked Dolores not to say anything to the family. She helps him sneak in food for him too!

I've had this list of headcannons just sitting in my notes app of my phone and I wanna put it somewhere so 👀

(These are heavily inspired by what I could gather from the skele boys in @bonelyheartsclub! I just threw in a few of my own.)

Sans

- Does a LOT of stargazing and has quite a few space-themed knicknacks and clothes in his room. He's got a telescope too!

- Dad jokes. Any time is prime dad joke time. He's never let an opportunity slip past him.

- He's an absolute prank master. You're considered lucky if you happen to avoid the ones he's planted around the house like bombs waiting to go off.

- He's cryptic as fuck. Always giving half-true answers to every question. Occasionally he may slip up and give you a brutally honest response, but that's only with the people he trusts most, and he finds being open to be very difficult.

- He's constantly referencing memes and vine quotes from days of yore. He practically has a database of every meme ever in his head, and he doesnt let it go to waste.

- Cuddling with him is basically a one way ticket to nap-town, and you constantly find yourself waking up to him smooshed against you on the couch after dozing off. For being a skeleton, he is a surprisingly comfortable snuggler.

Papyrus

-So much baking and cooking. It's his favorite past time, and the kitchen never smells the same when he's done making whatever he's making in there (it's 12 times out of 10 pasta) And while his cooking may be sub-par, you never say no when he asks you to try his latest dish.

- He's always up to go shopping with you. It never matters where. Malls are his favorite, especially the big grand ones with fountains and huge windows. He makes it a point to bring spare cash because you KNOW he's going to ride the mini marry-go-round even if he can barely fit in the seats.

- You two love to binge watch cooking channels. Always discussing which foods would be the most fun to make, writing down recipies, and having a hell of a time trying to pause the show at the right points to get all the information down.

- Papyrus is notorious for game nights. He's always pulling out boards and cards that you've never heard of before and never starts a game until he's absolutely certain you know the rules. Winning of course, is always his prime goal when it comes to games, but if he senses you're on a particularly rough losing streak, he MAY slip up. Occasionally. Just enough so you can win a game or two. Or five.

Blue

- Hyper as all hell. You give him a reasonable dose of sugar or caffeine and he could power an entire city for a few hours without breaking a sweat.

- If he had been in high school, Blue would have been a theater kid. He's always humming a tune from a Broadway show or Disney movie, and he's got a pretty good collection of songs on his brother's Spotify playlist.

- This guy will blast Steven Universe music at full volume he has no shame.

- If you are ever driving somewhere with him, an aux cord is a MUST. Singing in the car is a very frequent thing with you two, and you'll only get out after the song is over.

- He likes cryptids! Mothman is his favorite and he firmly believes he exists somewhere.

- He's your workout buddy. If he manages to drag you to the gym with him, that is.

- Blue hates seeing you down in the dumps, and is always trying to cheer you up with his quirky puns and jokes to get you smiling again.

- He'd be the best motivational poster ever. Whenever he picks up that you're going through a rough spot and falling behind on self-care, he knows just what to say to put the spark back in you again.

- Radiates goblin energy.

- A goddamn meme lord.

- He's made two or three widely known viral videos and nobody knows it was him.

- You need someone to go to an anime convention with? Stretch is your guy. He's god awful at planning stuff out, but he'll make sure you both have a good time, no matter what happens.

- He's really big into nerd culture, and he DMs for a dungeons and dragons game every week.

- He'll occasionally smoke, but he doesnt have lungs, so he does it more for shits and giggles than anything else.

- As lazy as he seems, he is very reliable. If he knows it's something important to you, he'll get it done. Chores though, he's a lot more iffy with.

- He really likes bees.

- Talks big talk, but he's actually a huge softie.

- He's basically a big pillow with sharp teeth that can curse.

- A nervous wreck.

- His brother shops at Hot Topic. He shops at Spencer's. Very convenient.

- He's a pretty big flirt and throws out little compliments and things to butter you up from time to time.

- If you take Red into a Dave and Busters he will win the most expensive prize at the booth in about 2 hours. (He knows how to cheat at every single game)

- He's a competitive gamer, and has a pretty impressive following on Twitch.

- He can go from loud and brash to quiet and insecure in a matter of moments, depending on the situation.

- He loves to bake, although it's something he will never be caught dead doing.

- Comfort is not his strong suit, but he will defend you without a second thought.

- He can be a little clingy and will text you now and again to ask what you're up to, just to ease his mind.

- The walking embodiment of Hot Topic.

- He loves to listen to rock and screamo music. He's also got a thing for Disney villain songs.

- Out of all the skeletons, Boss has the biggest ego.

- He hates admitting he's wrong. He would rather DIE than admit he's fucked up something.

- He could kill a man with his high heels.

- If it's got spikes he'll probably wear it.

- Did I mention he's a cold blooded tsundere.

- Small angery man.

- He listens to a lot of classic and instrumental music. He finds it very sophisticated.

- Wakes up obscenely early in the morning. Always followed by a cup of the most bitter coffee on the planet.

- Comes up with the best insults. He could roast someone so hard that they'd dissolve into a pile of soot. He could glare at you and you'd cease to exist. He's that good.

- WILL step on you without remorse.

- Threatens to kill someone on a daily basis.

- Very rarely has spare time for himself. He's always keeping busy doing something.

- Loves dark, dry humor. A child falling off a swing will have him laughing for a good five minutes.

- Has a stone cold poker face.

- He might have a softer side to him. You may never know because of the walls he's built up around him.

- He absolutely adores animals. He volunteers at the local animal shelter and plans on adopting every single dog there.

- Rus has a massive sweet tooth. Donuts are his favorite, and you can easily bribe him with anything sugar coated.

- A road trip master. You put him in a camper and he knows exactly where he's going and what he's doing.

- "Going off grid, fuck yeah- I pull out my credit cards and shred 'em."

- Hiking, camping and geocaching are some of his favorite things to do. He loves to explore the wilderness and it's like he has a built-in compass for finding his way.

- His ideal date is going to a Wal-Mart and causing absolute chaos by riding bikes around and tossing all of the inflatable balls from their displays.

- Cryptidcore energy.

- Rus loves watching Buzzfeed Unsolved and ghost huntings. He's a big fan of Supernatural and Stranger Things, too.

- Stutters and slurs his words a lot. He's got some speech impediments from the gold canines in his mouth.

- A bit lacking when it comes to social skills, but he can be extremely caring and sweet.

- Very soft-spoken and awkward. He doesn't get much social interaction and is still figuring some things out.

- He's very self-aware of the wound in his head. Whenever he has to leave the house he wears some sort of hat to cover it up.

- Practically lives in his garden. He understands plants more than he does human beings, and he spends time daily tending to whatever he's growing.

- Him and his brother are both vegetarians, and the smell or sight of meat makes them both feel sick to themselves.

- Has trouble sleeping due to his reoccurring nightmares. He will often sit in his garden late at night to help calm himself.

- Radiates soft energy. He would absolutely give the best hugs out of all the skeletons.

- Very touch-starved. Physical affection is something he rarely recieves, and he probably lingers with touches a lot longer than he should.

- Unintentionally makes God-teir jokes without realizing it.

- Very well-educated in a lot of things. He really likes stocking up on useless factoids and making up his own just to mess with people.

- He answers Jeopardy questions with concerning accuracy.

- He enjoys going out to eat, and he's always up to try fancy foods.

- He likes photography and reading. He is well into the Harry Potter series.

- Poplar is prepared for anything at any time. A lot of stuff doesnt phase him at all, and it's difficult to catch him off-guard.

- He's willing to try anything new, once.

- Always willing to help out with schoolwork if he thinks you're seriously struggling with it.

- He's always carrying around small planners and notebooks to write in so he can keep track of things.

aight so here we go. as requested by popular demand:

the cryptid classical music list - pt. 1: what

just a quick warning: most of these will be pieces in the "contemporary classical" genre, which means there will most likely be a lot of dissonance. and also most of it is just weird.

alright lets get this list started.

Alfred Schnittke - Concerto Grosso No. 1

And starting off strong, we have Schnittke's Concerto Grosso No. 1.

It's an interesting work because if you analyze the structure, it's very similar to a baroque-era concerto. The instrumentation is also very similar, consisting of two violin soloists, string orchestra, and harpsichord. The only difference is the addition of a prepared piano (which is a piano where stuff has been put between the strings in order to give it a different sound).

However, the piece itself is very modern. There are a few execptions, specifically the beginning of the Tocatta and various places throughout the Rondo.

This is a very eldritch-horror-esque piece due to its use of Ligeti-esque micro-polyphony. What Schnittke does is he takes each induvidual section of instruments and splits it up, similar to divisi. However, he subdivides it into 8 or 12 parts instead of a more normal two or three, leading to a very dissonant and unique sound.

Honestly, if you want to start listening to this, listen to the Rondo first; it's the most accessible movement in my opinion, but whatever order you take this in is up to you.

So. Penderecki's St. Luke Passion. Where do we begin?

The St. Luke Passion is an interesting one, because out of all the gospels Penderecki could have chosen, he picked the one that Bach never made into a passion. And the references don't stop there, whether it be the use of a baritone to represent Jesus, or the B-A-C-H (Bb-A-C-B) motif.

The work is totally atonal, and there are a lot of jumpscares. Like a lot. The music is also incredible, and its use of timbre is incredible. (listen to the "Et surgens omnis")

In addition, Penderecki makes great use of the choir, using them for vocal effects alongside singing (listen to the "Popule meus").

Okay, do you remember what I said at the top about the music getting weird? Well this is peak weird.

Black Angels is written for string quartet with a few interesting modifications. The score requires you to use electric instruments, which are a weird choice. In addition, the score calls for each player to also use a series of percussion instruments and their voice in addition to playing their instrument.

And there are the avant-garde aspects of this as well. Every modern playing technique in the book is used in this, such as playing on the wrong side of the fingerboard, applying large amounts of pressure to the bow, bowing behind the bridge, and plenty more.

I'm gonna be entirely honest: this music sparks a weird reaction. If I try to listen to it as background music, it makes me dissociate a solid 80% of the time. So apporach at your own risk.

Oh yeah, and also there are a lot of jumpscares.

Alexander Scriabin - Piano Sonata No. 5 in F# Major (Op. 53)

Okay, we're finally venturing back into more tonal territory. And we're coming back with my favourite lunatic composer of all time: Alexander Scriabin.

I'll talk about him a little bit later along the list cause I have a better piece to reference, but for now just know that he once tried to end the world with music. Anyways, back to the sonata.

The 5th Piano Sonata is in one movement and spans a lot of keys. It contains some really pretty moments, as well as some moments that make you feel a bit overwhelmed. It's also very hard. But nontheless, it's still an amazing piece, and much more accessible than his later works.

Alberto Ginastera - Concerto for Harp and Orchestra (Op. 25)

i'm just gonna be entirely honest with this one: the whole piece slaps.

Alberto Ginastera was an Argentinean composer more commonly known for his Danzas Argentinas (Op. 2). But nonetheless, the Harp Concerto, the Piano Concerto No. 1 (we'll get to that one later), and the Piano Sonata No. 1 (not on this list) all slap.

Performance provided:

The Harp Concerto is probably the most accessible out of the three works I just mentioned, and that's because it goes hard. Because the harp can only be tuned to 7 different pitch classes at a time, and since they cant be tuned to double flats or sharps, it forces the music to be very tonal.

And this is they key to the work: the limitations of the harp are easily dealt with, and the harp doesn't feel overused.

🕸Torchwood Fan Fests 2021 Halloween Fest🕸

October has arrived, officially opening spooky season, and it is no different here at Torchwood Fan Fests!

Starting today, October 1st, and until November 5th we will be doing a Halloween Fest in celebration 🎃

This fest doesn’t require signing up! All you have to do is create a halloween-themed fanwork and submit it to us at any point up to November 5th. (Please remember to add any relevant content warnings!)

All types of fanworks are accepted for this fest, with the usual requirements: the minimum word count for writing is 500 words per prompt (fic, meta, not!fic, and headcanons; poetry is exempt from this requirement), 30 seconds is the minimum length for videos, and 3-songs plus a short explanation for why you picked each song is the minimum for music playlists. If you have an idea for a fanwork that seems unconventional or less common, send us an ask! We welcome all types of content for this fest and we will be happy to hear from you :)

We are providing 16 optional prompts for this fest. We provide these prompts with the intention of helping creators by hopefully sparking some interesting ideas; however, we will not require that submissions fit into one of them, so long as they fit the general theme of Halloween. You can take them or leave them!

Oh man thank you so much for answering my ask! I still am into Longmire, and Branch remains my favorite character, and you are so right about people not looking long enough to see what a great guy he is! Now you’ve got me hooked though, haha! What are your headcanons for Branch’s hobbies? What’s his taste in books and music? Does he like scary movies? Dogs or cats? CAN HE SING? (I’m a sucker for a man that can sing) you write for him so beautifully that I just wanna know more haha! Thanks love!

Branch’s hobbies tend to be pretty Wyoming typical. He loves camping, fishing, hunting. He loves to go swimming in different rivers. He’s not a huge fan of swimming pools. He prefers to be out in nature. He, of course, loves riding his mare to clear his head. He used to be a bronc rider before he became a deputy, so sometimes he likes to go visit his old friends who are still involved in the rodeo circuit. And occasionally, he’ll take up the invitation of a ride. He still needs a good rush of adrenaline from time to time. He also tries to volunteer with animal shelters. He hates seeing animals abused or neglected, so when he was younger he loved going to take care of them. His father hated him doing it. He thought it made Branch look weak. Branch never cared what his father said about it, but since he’s become a deputy, he doesn’t have too much time anymore. He’ll do his best to attend an adoption day or donate large amounts during the holiday seasons though. Overall, I think Branch’s biggest hobby is simply to build things. He loves doing things around the house (like putting in a new deadbolt for Cady). Any home improvement project is something he’ll gladly take on. Anything that lets him use his hands. He really wants to learn more about carpentry. He has basic knowledge and can build basic things, but he wants to be able to create really beautiful woodworks.

Branch is a total classic rock guy. It’s the music he grew up with, and he loves it just as much as when he was a kid. He doesn’t listen to country. He doesn’t want to be that much of a walking cliche. He doesn’t really ever listen to new music either unless he just happens to be where it’s playing. But classic rock and sometimes old school funk are his jams. If you want a few examples of songs Branch loves, listen to Leroy Brown by Jim Croce. But Branch loves every song by Jim Croce. ( @peritxetxinvenit I can’t lie, Leroy Brown reminds me very much of Vic xD ). But he also loves songs like What a Fool Believes by the Doobie Brothers. Okay, if I’m not careful I’ll wind up making an entire playlist of songs Branch likes! But for some more recent songs, Branch likes Mr. Brightside by The Killers and Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye. 

Now, can Branch sing....? YES. Yes, Branch can sing. And he can sing very well. When he listens to any of the songs I’ve listed above in his truck, omg, does this boy belt it out. One thing that always helps put him in a better mood is to get in his truck, drive down a quiet road, roll the windows down, blast music he loves, and sing along to it. Now while Branch can sing, he never let’s anyone hear him. He’d be mortified if anyone heard. He doesn’t realize that he has a wonderful voice, and he feels like a fool at the idea of people hearing him sing. He doesn’t even hum to himself or silently lip-sing to songs he likes with other people around. He won’t even sing in his own house because he’s worried someone might come to visit and overhear. However, after a couple of beers and with someone he really cares about, they might be able to get him to sing a little tune for them. An aside note, Branch had a couple of piano lessons when he was young, but he hated it and his father never made him pursue it. He can’t play any instruments, though he’d like to learn to play the guitar. 

Branch is a very intelligent man, and he’s actually an avid reader. Some people might think of him as the dumb high school quarter back, but he’s not stupid despite loving sports. During high school, he read a great many classic novels. He actually loved them all. It shames him to no end, but when Walt lent him Hound of the Baskervilles in order to chastise him, Branch did indeed take the book home and very carefully read it. He learned a lot from it and thoroughly enjoyed the story. But because his job demands a lot of his time, he doesn’t ever feel like he has the time to read many novels anymore. Branch is at a point where he’d want to get through a book in an afternoon. So he doesn’t read novels or novellas, instead, he reads plays! Plays as old as Oedipus Rex to contemporary plays. He enjoys that they’re quick reads, but he also has a lot of fun making his imagination work to visualize everything. He actually much prefers reading plays instead of going to watch them. And because of his Uncle Lucian’s talent for writing poetry, Branch will always go buy a collection of poetry based on whoever his uncle recommends he reads. 

Branch loves scary movies! They’re one of his favorite kinds of movies. Yet as often as he watches them, he’s not often truly impressed by them. He hates cheap jump scares. He loves the old school horror movies, no matter how camp they are. Evil Dead, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Chucky to name a few. All the cult classics that had phenomenal horrifying originals. He never bothers with any sequels. He doesn’t really care much for blood and guts in movies. In fact, he’d like to get away from that once he’s out of work. His favorite kind of horror movies have good characters, strong plot lines, and a sense of unease that builds and builds until it’s intolerable. Though I will say, he’ll never watch horror movies alone. 

And here’s a little headcanon near and dear to me that almost ties into the last one. He’s not a coward by any means, but having grown up in close proximity to the Cheyenne reservation has influenced his belief in frightening creatures and spirituality as a whole. While Branch says he doesn’t believe in ghosts or goblins of any sort, he feels it’s best not to push his luck with any possible malevolent entities or cryptid creatures. When Vic Moretti mentioned having her tarot cards read, he actually thought she was pretty brave. He was being honest about never having had them done because he’s a guy in the middle of Wyoming. But I do imagine after that, Victoria would have really tried to get him to go with her for a reading. He would have flatly refused, and it’s because he would be afraid. He’d be afraid of knowing something bad was coming his way and he’d be helpless to stop it. For Branch, he’d rather not see the snake in the grass until he’s bit rather than to know it’s there and know he’s trapped. 

And last but not least, Branch loves cats and dogs!!! He never had any pets other than horses growing up, and he doesn’t have one now. He’d really like to have a pet, but he worries he wouldn’t be fair to them by working all the time. But he adores dogs and cats equally. He loves that a dog can go anywhere with him and be an outdoor companion. And when he visits people who have cats, the kitties tend to take to his lap instantly. He loves cuddling with a kitty inside, but he doesn’t like how their fur gets everywhere. And usually it’s so fine that it makes him sneeze terribly compared to dog fur. He likes to think that once he’s Sheriff or even retired from the Sheriff’s department, he’ll adopt a dog and a cat.
