Cross-writing Hell
Behold the most annoying letter I have transcribed thus far. 8 cross-written sheets that are out of order. It was very helpful to see the originals, & I've now put the text in the correct order & transcribed all of the words. Fitzjames tells Aunt Louisa about the landing of King Otho at Napoli in February 1833.
Just know I had to go through this:

'The Honourable East India Iron Steam Ship Nemesis, Lieut. W.H. Hall, R.N. Commander, with boats of Sulphur, Calliope, Larne and Starling destroying the Chinese war junks, in Anson's Bay, Jany 7th 1841', NMM Collection.
Henry TD Le Vesconte, not yet a lieutenant, was aboard Calliope and wrote a long letter to his father dated "Calliope in Canton River March 1841." Here is Nemesis Iron Steam Vessell in his handwriting from that letter, although the crosswriting makes it hard to see (Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador).

Barndomens historia: Philippe Ariès Barndomens historia (1962), Nicholas Orme Medieval Children (2001), Colin Heywood A History of Childhood (2001)
Upplysningens devis: undervisa och underhålla! Rousseaus Émilie (1762)
Motstridiga syner på barnet: demonisering/idealisering
Maktfrågor: Jacqueline Rose: The Case of Peter Pan or The Impossibility of Children´s Fiction (1984)

Hi hi!! Sorry it took so long for me to get home from work and errands. Here it is, with some of my notes.
Her Majesty's Ship Erebus at Greenhithe
May 15th, 1845
I, Henry Thomas Dundas Le Vesconte, Lieutenant in the Royal Navy being about to proceed on a Voyage of Discovery in the Polar Seas and desirous to dispose of what property I may be possessed of in the event of my death do make this my solemn Will and Testament. First I give to my very dear friend and cousin Henrietta Le Feuvre of Southhampton the sum of one hundred pounds sterling to be paid out of my wages due to me for service in Her Majesty's Navy The rest of my property I leave to my beloved father Henry Le Vesconte Commander in the Royal Navy or if he should die before me to my mother Sarah Le Vesconte wife of the above named Commander Henry Le Vesconte and if neither of them shall survive me I bequeath all my property excepting one hundred pounds before mentioned to my dear sisters to be divided in the following manner To Rose Henrietta Le Vesconte one half To Charlotte Sarah Le Vesconte and to Anna Maria Le Vesconte the remaining half to be equally divided between them lastly I name my dear friend and cousin Edmond Philip Le Feuvre of the Custom House London to be my Executor and I desire him to accept a small tin japanned Box now in his possession with its contents. T.D. Le Vesconte [sic]
witnesses J.W. Fairholme Lieut. R.N. J Weeks Carpenter
Proved at London the 11th July 1854 before the Worshipful Thomas Sprinks Doctor of Laws and Surrogate by the oath of Edmond Philip Le Feuvre the sole Excr, to whom admou [administration] was granted having been first sworn duly to administer.
Here’s where I sound like a bad lazy Henry Thomas Dundas Le Vesconte fan: I am not 100% on the relationship between H.T.D. Le Vesconte and the Le Feuvres, but they are not first cousins, i.e. not children of a sibling of Henry’s mother or father. But I’m not exactly sure where the Le Feuvres married into the Le Vescontes or what level of distant cousin they are.
Henrietta and Edmond are brother and sister, and the children of William J. Le Feuvre — whose name can be seen on the list of subscribers to Francis McClintock’s Fox expedition in search of the Franklin expedition. At least one Le Vesconte cousin was on that list donating £50. (At this point I think H.T.D. Le Vesconte is distantly related to every single person in the Channel Islands.)
A lot of my research projects for the year have been delayed for a long time because of the pandemic, but I am THIS close to getting my hands on a lot of Le Vesconte family material in the Provincial Archives of Canada. It took a lot of persistence. Through a lucky break I was able to get electronic copies of a few things, although I am slow to transcribe them (and the family also has to approve who gets access so I am not publicly putting them everywhere.)
I know that cousin Henrietta was worried about H.T.D. Le Vesconte going on the Franklin expedition and not happy about it. Henry wrote to his father before his departure: “Poor little Henrietta says she does not like these dangerous enterprises but she is fully aware of the necessity of doing something - I tell her we may be back in a year and a half - this is quite true but the most probable time is two years.” (It hurt me a lot to read that.)
In the event of the death of both parents Henry left half his estate to his oldest (and clearly favourite) sister Rose, with the remainder to be divided among the other two sisters (but not his three younger brothers.) I think that might be a cultural norm to provide females with inheritance, and perhaps Rose gets the most for being the eldest. Or did Henry want to provide for her because he (correctly) guessed that she wasn’t the marrying kind? In 1845 she was 36 and never married, and she turns up on the 1881 census in Hastings, Ontario still unmarried.
Tumblr media
So, here’s another will. This is Le Vesconte’s, and I can see that his witnesses were Fairholme and Weekes. I think he left his estate to various family members?

Editing letter transcriptions
for my Fitzjames biography. Working with low quality black and white scans and staying up too late make for plenty of corrections. But it is very satisfying to get all of the words in the end.

The small historic City of Guyton, during the Civil War era, was an affluent town if you take a walk down Central Avenue that is easy to see. The residents are fortunate to own a piece of history.

Cross writing from the 1800’s
Notice that the business logo is placed on a letter written in 1876-1877. This type of writing is called cross letters or cross writing. Similar in pattern to a criss-cross quilt.
Letters written with criss crossing the words during the 1800’s
During those years, the post office charged 2 pennies for a 1/2 ounce letter that included the envelope.  Postage was charged by weight.
I guess we could say that not much has changed.  Save a penny here, save a penny there, we still look for the bargains.
Thanks for coming along, I hope you are enjoying the scenes of coastal Georgia and South Carolina

#Repost @52museums with @repostapp ・・・ We're loving this Cross-Written Letter from 1815 ✍ ⠀⠀ Did you know that writing in different directions was a common method of saving paper and money before the first postal stamp was introduced?⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ When mail first became available to everyone in the 17th century, the price of a letter was paid by the receiver and was much higher if additional pages were used. So letters were ‘cross-written’, with writing at two or more different angles. It wasn’t easy to read, but it saved a few pennies. This continued until the Postal Reform in 1840.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ #postalmuseum #openingsoon #museums #london #newmuseums #history #postalhistory #52museums #exhibitions #heritage #attractions #interactives #galleries #archives #mail #letter #handwriting #crosswriting #writing⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Discover the #unexpected at @thepostalmuseum Opening in London, July 2017
