Chapter 3: Starring NIGHTWING as the Cavalry

Fic Summary:

In the aftermath of the quake that shook Gotham, Helena Bertinelli takes on the mantle of the Bat. (It isn’t like Batman’s using it.) If she’d known the cowl came with a certain moralizing little bird following her around — well, she probably still would’ve done it, but it would’ve been nice to know in advance. (Or: Tim and Helena team up 2: electric boogaloo. Now with more bats!)

We are back, baby! I got so much procrastination on my school projects done while editing this.

After two chapters of drama, it's time for something more chill and fun before we hit the endgame :)

Excerpt:

“Knock knock.”

Helena groaned and blinked. Someone was shining a flashlight in her face. At her side, Robby made some equally unhappy noises as he tried to pull the blanket over his head. It took Helena a second to wake up, but then it happened all at once. Someone else was there.

She kicked out, but her legs were still tangled in the blankets and the intruder easily dodged back.

Robby finally noticed something was wrong and sat up. “’Lena, what?” he said with a yawn. Then, more alert: “Nightwing?”

With the flashlight no longer shining in her eyes, Helena could see the black and blue costume she’d originally missed. She flicked on the LED lamp near the bed, and there he was, looking in far better shape than anyone inside the city had been in months. “What are you doing here?” she demanded.

“When did you get here?” asked Robby.

“To answer your questions: last night and I was sent to fetch you. B called a meeting,” Nightwing said.

Robby crossed his arms. “B knows what I think. You can tell him that sending you isn’t going to change that. No offense,” he tacked on apologetically.

Nightwing nodded. “So you’re both out then?

Helena exchanged a look with Robby. “Both?” she asked.

Nightwing shrugged. “He told me to get both of you.”

“Really?” she asked. “Because he was pretty clear on what he thought of me the last time we met.”

“Hey, I just got here.” Nightwing held up his hands. “I’m just telling you what he told me.”

Robby was looking to her. “Do you think he means it?”

Helena shrugged. “You know him better than I do, kid.”

“Well…” she could see the wheels in his head turning, “maybe. He did kind of try to apologize last time.” To Robin, not to the Bat. “I won’t go if you don’t,” he decided.

Helena turned back to Nightwing. “Who else is going to be at this meeting?”

“Me, Oracle, Azrael I think. It’s an all hands sort of thing.

So either she was actually included in that, or else he just wanted to chew her out in front of a larger audience. Helena knew she really shouldn’t get her hopes up; she’d been burned enough times before, but if he really was serious this time… Well, She never had completely managed to rid herself of the part of her that wanted for Batman to see her, to respect her. Though, admittedly, with the events of the past months, that part had gotten pretty small.

What were the options here? If they went and it turned out he was still an asshole, it’d be annoying, but she could just leave. A waste of morning at worst. But if they didn’t go and it turned out he was serious… Helena was honestly a little surprised that Robin had stuck with her this long. He'd been the only thing keeping her from spilling blood all over his precious bat symbol and he’d still chewed out Batman for her in the end. If Batman was serious, she owed it to the kid to at least give it a try. She knew he didn’t like being at odds with Batman, for all he was willing to be.

“We’ll come,” she said.

“Where are we going?” Robby asked.

“Clocktower,” Nightwing said. “I figured I’d come along with you once you got suited up.”

“How long until we need to be there?” Helena asked.

He shrugged. “Sooner’s better. It starts whenever everyone shows up.

She probably wouldn’t have been able to get back to sleep anyway. Helena stood up and stretched. “Well then, let a woman have her privacy?”

Robby dragged Nightwing out the door.

She could hear them talking in the other room as she stripped off her sleepwear and pulled on the Batsuit.

“You had me worried, you know,” Nightwing said.

“Really?” Robby asked.

“Yeah, I had to hear from O that you were hanging out in No Man’s Land.”

“Oh.” A pause. “I didn’t think you’d notice.”

“Really? You come by every other week to bother me. Of course I’m going to notice when you stop. Then you stop answering your phone and of course I’m worried.”

“Um, I’m sorry?”

A snort, probably from Nightwing. Helena could empathize. “Punk. So, you and Huntress?”

“She’s the Bat,” Robby said automatically. Then, more suspicious: “And what do you mean?”

“I’m just saying, after all that shit you gave me for letting her see my face, where do I find you?”

“It’s not— I’m not— It’s practical!” Robby sputtered. “I’ve known her for longer! And there’s only one bed!”

“Sure, kid.”

“You agreed we weren’t going to bring that up!”

“I’m just saying…”

The conversation devolved into scuffling. Helena pulled on her mask and went around to the doorway. Robin was only half-way suited up and Nightwing had him in a headlock.

She coughed. “So, are we going?”

Nightwing let Robin go and he hurried to finish putting on his tunic. “I’m ready,” he said and headed to the exit.

Nightwing turned to her. “Ladies first,” he said.

She rolled her eyes, but headed for the door.

My Frustration 2: Electric Boogaloo

This is something of a sequel to my previous post because looking back on it, the way I described 'pop-culture/literally intellectuals' and how they go around spouting "raised stakes and consequences" and especially relating to my distaste of Pyrrha and Arkos being tragic, and Black Sun seemingly thrown out the window or even if it didn't they would be put on the chopping block next sounded to broad and generalized

I want to make it perfectly clear, I'm not saying every person who uses those terms are snobs and are being completely arbitrary

I am aware Monty always intended Pyrrha and Arkos to be tragic, and I get why the story idealistically works(such as Celtic Phoenix is trying to do with Fixing RWBY) and I get why it works for a majority and why its objectively good and what not

But I'm gonna be honest, and pardon me using a Harry Potter gif because I know the whole ordeal about JK but the gif is a mood...

I love the world and characters and certain concepts of RWBY, but I honestly I just really don't like the story that was told with them or directions they went, which once again isn't to say its objectively bad

I’m not saying the direction RWBY went with V3 or Pyrrha and the rest of the cast being tragic in some way or another is objectively bad, it was just not my taste

And I am not saying every normal RWBY fan/RWDE person who liked it is an elitist about it nor are all of them trying to insult me and attack me personally or say my ideas are bad but rather help you guys understand my experience with the toxic strain of the fanbase.

and I am not trying to change canon or its “trajectory” , nor am I doing this to spite Monty, especially when I never knew the guy. This is a difference in handling ideas and concepts.

I’m doing my RWBY AU, which will most likely be revamped into an original story since it takes a whole different directions with the characters and world, but it's mostly because with post V3 and now in retrospect I saw what this world, characters, ships and other ideas could have been all in a story I believe is worth telling. And I was very disappointed and frustrated that it wasn’t along with my own personal exhaustion how epic storytelling has been going in several franchises.

and my original story which might be a magitek space opera, is kinda cross between RWBY, Fairy Tale, Star Wars, Flash Gordon, and The Chronicles of Narnia

The problem with that in the past is I have met individuals who were just snobs using the fact 'raised stakes' and 'consequences' in epics are necessary to just flat out negated any alternative ideas for concepts without even going into detail and from where I am standing it's becoming more legalistic and arbitrary to the point nothing is allowed to go right, at least not on the small scale as well as the large scale

Like for example, my original story recycles concepts of RWBY such as Jaune and Pyrrha, Blake and Sun, Weiss and Netpune, and Ruby and Oscar as new characters but they get well earned happy endings and they reign as kings and queens on their respective planets and the last couple reigning over them all as emperor and empress

in the past on other websites a lot of ideologues just kept harping on 'raise stakes' and 'consequences' like cheerleaders at a prep rally as if those things inherently forbid such things

for example

"Arkos ended tragically worked, ergo all couples and characters in epic stories like Jaune and Pyrrha(the dork knight and the warrior woman isolated by society) especially if they are directly inspired by them must also end that way to raise steaks and consequences, and they only way they can have a happy ending is in a sitcom/romcom. Doesn't matter what the epic story is about, what happens, their roles, or why, or why it makes audiences happy, if they don't end up dead in an epic, it means nothing."

and to borrow a point from another previous post, when it came to my AU and original story, the fandom would set me and others like me up into a conundrum;

RWBY Fandom: “*sneer* the changes you made in this AU, its not RWBY anymore! Change it up and make it an original story!”

Me: Fine. *tweaks the designs, change the names, and aesthetics…*

Fandom: “Ah! This story is thinly-veiled fan fiction and its characters, world, and ships are clearly influenced by RWBY’s world, characters, and ships you wanted among other things along with you being butthurt which is pathetic and sad cope!

You should disengage the source material, use something else which you 100% agree with, grow up, and ya know, you need to learn to be more original!"

Me: "Philip Pullman did it with the Chronicles of Narnia in "His Dark Materials Trilogy" and you also got Omniman and Homelander from Invincible and The Boys who are Evil Superman..."

Fandom: "Well they can do that with stuff you like, but you can't do that with stuff we like."

and to borrow my point from my other post as before, when I tried to explain my personal distaste how it feels like tragic romance is bleeding into other stuff like DC Comics when Dan Didio trashed Bruce and Selena's wedding and ruining Clark and Lois's marriage and the 'hero's shouldn't have happy personal lives' gibberish, one rwby individual condoned it because

"single batman and superman sells well"

right after he said what I wanted was inherently 'pandering' which in my eyes is hypocritical since to do what 'sells well' can be pandering along with the idea I can't stuff my niche interests into stuff they like, but when its the reverse, its totally acceptable

They would go on how "they're just fictional characters, its not that deep" and then we would actively disagree with these things creatively, it all of a sudden was a matter of life and death

the pattern was pretty clear

and combined with my experience a lot of people in the RWBY fanbase began flipping off people who walked out on RWBY V3, insulting them and what they preferred, and telling those people basically "shut up and go watch a sitcom" just gives me this feelings there's a bias, and The RWBY fandom is the tip of the iceberg...

If you like the right things, think the right things, subjectively feel the right things, and subvert the wrong this for the right things, your justified in forcing your opinions onto others, can get away doing and saying whatever you want on the internet anywhere and to anyone without suppression, and simultaneously suppress and censor others within your own communities

Listen, bitch,

The fundamental problems with the Tumblr UX that have been driving people away for the past several years are a lot simpler than anything you have laid out here. It boils down to a couple of basic principles:

1) The site often does not work. Including, but not limited to:

a) Bugs and crashes - not just on app either

b) Autoplaying audio or otherwise obnoxious ads, with no on-ad option to hide or report. Weeks ago y'all said all ads should now have a "report ad" button directly on the ad. At least on Android this still has not arrived! Why the fuck you lyin', etc. etc.

c) No uniformity of features between desktop and mobile and an apparent complete lack of give-a-damn from y'all about it. I am STILL waiting for archive view on mobile... It's been 9 years since you launched the current incarnation of your app...

d) Search and tags are a disaster area and completely unreliable for actually finding anything. On individual blogs, they may not work at all, and on general site search, results are often completely irrelevant to the terms actually searched - while posts actually germane to their tag get excluded from public view for daring to feature... horror of horrors... A HYPERLINK TO AN INNOCUOUS, TRUSTWORTHY WEBSITE!!!! (wilhelm scream)

2) The site doesn't work 2, electric boogaloo: SPAM BOT PROBLEM

a) This has been ongoing for eleven years that I know of and serious enough to constantly affect UX for at least six of those

b) We know you know about this because you regularly acknowledge it with a resounding "🤷🙃 Nothing we can do! Do our moderating for us, unpaid, or stop fucking whining about it!" kinda attitude

c) Yet if there were truly nothing to be done, why do certain other, much larger social media sites seem to never present nearly as many problems with this despite ostensibly being a space that will provide much higher returns on spam due to the much higher traffic levels? Yes there are spammers on FB, TWT, and Insta but I don't have to spend my first ten minutes on each of these apps blocking them every goddamn day of my goddamn life...!

3) The structure of the site encourages a very adversarial model of interaction

a) Obviously to some extent this is what makes Tumblr unique and should not go away

b) However, at least on other (Twitter) sites where this sort of content model is in play, blocking actually works and you never have to see content created by the person you blocked again, nor worry they will be seeing yours

c) On Tumblr you can't even block someone from your fucking sideblogs on the mobile app. And any block you do is incomplete, because you can still see each other's comments on posts that cross your dash, for example if you happen to be in a smaller fandom where the same posts go around and get comments from lots of different people. (Look, I know this is a clash between the content being presented as intended and the user's privacy, but I believe the user's privacy ought to win - particularly as that's the justification for the stupid sideblog blocking problem to befuckin'gin with!)

d) I do appreciate that staff has made (one, half-assed) effort to give users more control over this lately (reblog controls could easily have a much more continuous range than just "all" or "none" and you know it); I do NOT appreciate that you basically cancelled it out with the introduction of Public Shaming Blaze although thank fuck y'all at least had the good sense to give OP veto power on that

e) Enforce your own goddamn TOS against the TERFs, nazis and other hateful communities and individuals on this site when we report them to you, jackasses. This ain't hard.

In the message above, y'all stated (bold and italic!):

"If the user has a bad content experience, the fault lies with the product."

Take that mindset, and apply it to the things that we have wanted fixed for years, instead of using it as an excuse to shove an algorithm down new users' throats. (Because I bet your plan for making the site easier to use for them doesn't involve a tour of how to switch off all the irritating ways y'all have dreamt up to shove algorithm shit in places we never wanted it over the years.) Remember - your long term viability isn't about how many new users you can add so much as whether you can RETAIN them - there's loads of accounts on here which are technically still "active" but have not posted since December 17, 2018 or shortly thereafter and they ain't doing jack or shit for your company's value now. If new users get in here, have a look around, go "hmm this place is a poorly maintained shithole where you constantly have to block spamblogs and can't effectively block or report people who hate you" and immediately leave, there is still no net benefit to the site's bottom line no matter how many "lurkers" you momentarily convert into account holders.

Tumblr’s Core Product Strategy

Here at Tumblr, we’ve been working hard on reorganizing how we work in a bid to gain more users. A larger user base means a more sustainable company, and means we get to stick around and do this thing with you all a bit longer. What follows is the strategy we're using to accomplish the goal of user growth. The @labs group has published a bit already, but this is bigger. We’re publishing it publicly for the first time, in an effort to work more transparently with all of you in the Tumblr community. This strategy provides guidance amid limited resources, allowing our teams to focus on specific key areas to ensure Tumblr’s future.

The Diagnosis

In order for Tumblr to grow, we need to fix the core experience that makes Tumblr a useful place for users. The underlying problem is that Tumblr is not easy to use. Historically, we have expected users to curate their feeds and lean into curating their experience. But this expectation introduces friction to the user experience and only serves a small portion of our audience. 

Tumblr’s competitive advantage lies in its unique content and vibrant communities. As the forerunner of internet culture, Tumblr encompasses a wide range of interests, such as entertainment, art, gaming, fandom, fashion, and music. People come to Tumblr to immerse themselves in this culture, making it essential for us to ensure a seamless connection between people and content. 

To guarantee Tumblr’s continued success, we’ve got to prioritize fostering that seamless connection between people and content. This involves attracting and retaining new users and creators, nurturing their growth, and encouraging frequent engagement with the platform.

Our Guiding Principles

To enhance Tumblr’s usability, we must address these core guiding principles.

Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.

Provide high-quality content with every app launch.

Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.

Retain and grow our creator base.

Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.

Improve the platform’s performance, stability, and quality.

Below is a deep dive into each of these principles.

Principle 1: Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.

Tumblr has a “top of the funnel” issue in converting non-users into engaged logged-in users. We also have not invested in industry standard SEO practices to ensure a robust top of the funnel. The referral traffic that we do get from external sources is dispersed across different pages with inconsistent user experiences, which results in a missed opportunity to convert these users into regular Tumblr users. For example, users from search engines often land on pages within the blog network and blog view—where there isn’t much of a reason to sign up. 

We need to experiment with logged-out tumblr.com to ensure we are capturing the highest potential conversion rate for visitors into sign-ups and log-ins. We might want to explore showing the potential future user the full breadth of content that Tumblr has to offer on our logged-out pages. We want people to be able to easily understand the potential behind Tumblr without having to navigate multiple tabs and pages to figure it out. Our current logged-out explore page does very little to help users understand “what is Tumblr.” which is a missed opportunity to get people excited about joining the site.

Actions & Next Steps

Improving Tumblr’s search engine optimization (SEO) practices to be in line with industry standards.

Experiment with logged out tumblr.com to achieve the highest conversion rate for sign-ups and log-ins, explore ways for visitors to “get” Tumblr and entice them to sign up.

Principle 2: Provide high-quality content with every app launch.

We need to ensure the highest quality user experience by presenting fresh and relevant content tailored to the user’s diverse interests during each session. If the user has a bad content experience, the fault lies with the product.

The default position should always be that the user does not know how to navigate the application. Additionally, we need to ensure that when people search for content related to their interests, it is easily accessible without any confusing limitations or unexpected roadblocks in their journey.

Being a 15-year-old brand is tough because the brand carries the baggage of a person’s preconceived impressions of Tumblr. On average, a user only sees 25 posts per session, so the first 25 posts have to convey the value of Tumblr: it is a vibrant community with lots of untapped potential. We never want to leave the user believing that Tumblr is a place that is stale and not relevant.

Deliver great content each time the app is opened.

Make it easier for users to understand where the vibrant communities on Tumblr are. 

Improve our algorithmic ranking capabilities across all feeds. 

Principle 3: Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.

Part of Tumblr’s charm lies in its capacity to showcase the evolution of conversations and the clever remarks found within reblog chains and replies. Engaging in these discussions should be enjoyable and effortless.

Unfortunately, the current way that conversations work on Tumblr across replies and reblogs is confusing for new users. The limitations around engaging with individual reblogs, replies only applying to the original post, and the inability to easily follow threaded conversations make it difficult for users to join the conversation.

Address the confusion within replies and reblogs.

Improve the conversational posting features around replies and reblogs. 

Allow engagements on individual replies and reblogs.

Make it easier for users to follow the various conversation paths within a reblog thread. 

Remove clutter in the conversation by collapsing reblog threads. 

Explore the feasibility of removing duplicate reblogs within a user’s Following feed. 

Principle 4: Retain and grow our creator base.

Creators are essential to the Tumblr community. However, we haven’t always had a consistent and coordinated effort around retaining, nurturing, and growing our creator base.  

Being a new creator on Tumblr can be intimidating, with a high likelihood of leaving or disappointment upon sharing creations without receiving engagement or feedback. We need to ensure that we have the expected creator tools and foster the rewarding feedback loops that keep creators around and enable them to thrive.

The lack of feedback stems from the outdated decision to only show content from followed blogs on the main dashboard feed (“Following”), perpetuating a cycle where popular blogs continue to gain more visibility at the expense of helping new creators. To address this, we need to prioritize supporting and nurturing the growth of new creators on the platform.

It is also imperative that creators, like everyone on Tumblr, feel safe and in control of their experience. Whether it be an ask from the community or engagement on a post, being successful on Tumblr should never feel like a punishing experience.

Actions & Next Steps

Get creators’ new content in front of people who are interested in it. 

Improve the feedback loop for creators, incentivizing them to continue posting.

Build mechanisms to protect creators from being spammed by notifications when they go viral.

Expand ways to co-create content, such as by adding the capability to embed Tumblr links in posts.

Principle 5: Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.

Push notifications and emails are essential tools to increase user engagement, improve user retention, and facilitate content discovery. Our strategy of reaching out to you, the user, should be well-coordinated across product, commercial, and marketing teams.

Our messaging strategy needs to be personalized and adapt to a user’s shifting interests. Our messages should keep users in the know on the latest activity in their community, as well as keeping Tumblr top of mind as the place to go for witty takes and remixes of the latest shows and real-life events.  

Most importantly, our messages should be thoughtful and should never come across as spammy.

Conduct an audit of our messaging strategy.

Address the issue of notifications getting too noisy; throttle, collapse or mute notifications where necessary.  

Identify opportunities for personalization within our email messages. 

Test what the right daily push notification limit is. 

Send emails when a user has push notifications switched off.

Principle 6: Performance, stability and quality.

The stability and performance of our mobile apps have declined. There is a large backlog of production issues, with more bugs created than resolved over the last 300 days. If this continues, roughly one new unresolved production issue will be created every two days. Apps and backend systems that work well and don't crash are the foundation of a great Tumblr experience. Improving performance, stability, and quality will help us achieve sustainable operations for Tumblr.

Improve performance and stability: deliver crash-free, responsive, and fast-loading apps on Android, iOS, and web.

Improve quality: deliver the highest quality Tumblr experience to our users. 

Move faster: provide APIs and services to unblock core product initiatives and launch new features coming out of Labs.

No, it basically is BugBear 2: Electric Boogaloo. You can say it, I'm a big girl, I can take it. 😂

Warbelle consists of Isabelle and Wardell.

You *probably* know Isabelle despite not knowing Animal Crossing, but in case you don't, she debuted as the mayoral assistant in New Leaf (to pretty much the immediate adoration of the fandom, if I recall correctly 😂), and now works alongside Tom Nook in New Horizons. She's very bright, cheerful, sweet... and constantly working. She wears many hats and practically seems to work 24/7 to keep the town/island running nicely. She'd give you the shirt off her back without hesitation, if she thought it would help.

Wardell just debuted in the New Horizons Happy Home Paradise DLC (where you design vacation homes for people), but I adore him so so much. He's a sweetheart. He doesn't say much... Usually not more than a sentence and he speaks very slowly, but he's also quite helpful. He, unlike Isabelle, likes to slow down and take breaks from time to time. Listen to the sounds of the waves, and relax in the ocean breeze...

I'm sure you see where this is going. Wardell could get Isabelle to sit down and take a goddamn break, and Isabelle could do the talking for him in situations where he'd need some vocal support. A much much simpler version of BugBear, the problem is getting the two to meet. (which I do not believe they have canonically interacted yet!)

I imagine they'd meet by chance, perhaps Tom Nook sends Isabelle to retrieve some paperwork from Lottie (she, Wardell, and a third character named Niko all design vacation homes together. Lottie's the one in charge of Paradise Planning), and she'd bump into Wardell. Despite his shy silence and her mile a minute cheerfulness, the two would hit it off instantly. Wardell seems distracted and lost in daydreams after she leaves, and when Isabelle gets back to the Resident Services building she will just not shut up about Wardell. Tom Nook and Lottie talk later, and come to the conclusion that obviously they need to cook up a thousand more excuses to send Isabelle over to Paradise Planning for things. 😈 So it'd be those two pulling all the strings to push them together. Niko and Isabelle's twin brother Digby could also get in on the fun. It'd be super cute. 🥰🥰🥰

whats up, i wrote nearly every day this month. i technically met my goal every day because i consistently over-wrote for the first three weeks of the month. i've worked nearly exclusively in two fandoms, IWTV and Phandom. I posted one fic, added about 20k to the shapes & weights sequel (we're about two days out from hitting 30k, woo) and have been struggling with working on a loumandstat threesome fic and a human au!tour!louis/lestat fic.

the thing that i've learned so far is that i failed out of nano so many times because writing 1600 words a day is actually so fucking hard. But writing 500/700/800 words a day is very doable and, dare i say it, sustainable beyond this challenge??

anyway, i really wanna give you all a snippet of shapes n weights ii: electric boogaloo (wow can't wait for it to have its own title) cause i know thats what most of you are interested in but nearly any snippet will blow up my spot re: stakes in that story. so, have some human!au louis/lestat.

“Life of the party,” Lestat says, raising a questing eyebrow before plucking the joint from between Louis’ mouth. “Cookie told me about this American weed game, le fusil, the— “

Lestat shoots Louis with a finger gun with his empty hand. 

“Shotgun?” Louis takes the joint back and Lestat nods, pantomiming something between an arrow and a bazooka now. “Didn’t you tell me you come from some backwater family? Did you tell me you won awards for hunting?” 

Lestat crosses his arms now and sniffs. “You know I don’t like to talk about my past. Anyway, the shotgun, yes. You’ve heard of it.” 

Louis looks beyond Lestat. It’s harder to see the rest of the yard now. Sunset is on them properly now, warming their surroundings in vivid late summer oranges. Most of the band is inside, taking part in whatever Lorraine is offering for dinner. And Lestat is here, head already tilted in that way that means he wants to be kissed. He’s shameless, Louis’ man, and he’s found ways to draw Louis into his games, acquiescing again and again to Louis’ personal attachment to propriety. 

“Yeah,” Louis says, like a braver man, “You’ve really never done it before? What about all your misspent youth in the catacombs of Paris or whatever.” 

Lestat’s brows are nearly invisible in this light, but Louis can still see them draw together in confusion.  “What are they telling you people about France?” He asks, allowing Louis to look around the nearly empty yard again before pulling him closer. “Why the catacombs? Why would teenagers be in les catacombes? Why would pay to see the catacombs when we could buy drugs, Louis explain?"

Things I Want in NSR Encore Edition

(In no particular order)

1. A music room where we can just listen to the soundtrack. It’s criminal that a music game doesn’t have this feature. Maybe an NPC can sell you the records or they just appear around the city since it doesn’t make story sense to be buying NSR’s music.

2. In the same vein, a cutscene viewer. Because sometimes I just don’t want to replay the entire boss just to grab 1 screenshot from the ending cutscene. Also let me review the Kliffnotes after the artist has been defeated.

3. A couple more lore drops, because why not. There’s a lot already, but that just makes me want more. I want the Kliff and Tatiana backstory damn it.

4. At least 1 bonus boss. Or if that’s too much, then at least one remix song per boss (like an Ultra Crazy mode).

5. Boss rush mode. I heard that this was the original intention for NSR Tower, so I’d like to see them bring it back.

6. PUT A GODDAMN FAST TRAVEL PHONE AT NSR TOWER. STOP MAKING ME CROSS THAT LONG-ASS BRIDGE EVERY TIME I WANNA SEE TATIANA.

7. Let me accessorize Mayday and Zuke. One of my favorite fandom things was seeing B2J dressed after each district. I want that to be real.

8. Let me pet Ellie even after I’ve unlocked the Elliecopter

Fic Summary:

In the aftermath of the quake that shook Gotham, Helena Bertinelli takes on the mantle of the Bat. (It isn’t like Batman’s using it.) If she’d known the cowl came with a certain moralizing little bird following her around — well, she probably still would’ve done it, but it would’ve been nice to know in advance. (Or: Tim and Helena team up 2: electric boogaloo. Now with more bats!)

Under the wire, baby! There is still a short epilogue I've got to write for this, but I am counting this towards finishing this fic by the end of the year.

It's time to return to No Man's Land ~drama~ this chapter as we hit the endgame:

Barbara turned at the sound of the window opening. Robin was climbing through. “Good,” she said. “You’re here.”

“Babs, B.” He nodded to her and Bruce, who was doing his best shadow impression in the cape and cowl at her side. “What’s going on?”

Bruce grunted. “Something’s come up.”

That was her cue. Barbara pulled up the news segment she’d recorded earlier that day.

In it, Lex Luthor stood behind a podium, an overwhelmed looking Jack Drake at his side. “For the past week, we have all been following the tragic story of Tim Drake. We have watched as the government refuses to do anything to help this poor child, trapped in No Man’s Land. Well I refuse to stand by any longer. If the government won’t help you, Mr. Drake, then I will. LexCorp will be sending a private task force to do everything they can to rescue your son. As a nation, we have too long turned a blind eye to No Man’s Land. LexCorp will stand for it no longer.

He shook Jack Drake’s hand, smiling wide for the cameras, and then the man was being pushed to the microphone.

“I am, uh, of course, very thankful for your help,” he said, less assured than Luthor had been. “I just want Tim back home safe. I want my son—”

“Stop it,” Robin said, his voice thick with an emotion Barbara politely pretended not to notice.

She paused the video.

“Why are you showing me this?” he demanded. Then, to Bruce: “Why?”

“Robin,” Barbara said gently. “I’m not stupid, kid. You made national news.”

“Tim—” Bruce said.

Robin turned on him. “B,” he said, half pleading and half angry.

“—you know this changes things,” he continued. “Luthor will have people looking for you. It’s an additional risk.” Then, his voice softer and with a hundred layers of restraint. “Your father’s looking for you.”

“You don’t get to—” Robin said. “You don’t— I’m not leaving.”

“We need to do something,” Barbara said, before things devolved further. “We can’t risk Luthor poking his nose into our operations.”

“We could use the PR to our advantage if we arrange for you to—” Bruce started to say.

“I already told you, I’m not leaving,” Robin crossed his arms. “I’ve been here for nine months already. I’m staying to the end.

“Are you sure?”

“B, listen to me.”

He let out a carefully metered breath. “Fine. We’ll figure something out.”

Robin relaxed. “Thanks.”

He lingered after Bruce had left.

“I guess I don’t need this anymore,” he said, peeling off his mask.

“You didn’t think you could keep it from me forever, did you?” Barbara asked.

“No, I guess not.” He sighed. “I didn’t mean for it to be such a big deal. I just… I just wanted my dad to know I was okay.”

“He obviously cares about you.”

“Yeah,” Tim said distantly. “He does.”

so like..... the most interesting i have is.. electric boogaloo being a father. you know, I LOVE 70s culture so of course this disco mf is my favourite and a huge comfort character. but like... i ship him with dazzling starr, they're both married party animals and like... they got a kid! beatrice, or betty, she's their 15 year old teenage daughter.... who's basically like a cross between disco and mf emo/scene from the 2000s. onto the dynamic!!

her parents are overly-cheery and over-bearing, but trust me, they mean to harm. both of them are loud-asses and are always excited about everything, so whenever betty's in a competition or contest, they cheer for her so hard. Buut.. they embarass her hard too! esp boogaloo. he's an absolutely sweet father, he loves his daughter very much, just, he's oblivious about the fact he embarasses her by being so enthusiastic. betty hates this as she feels babied, but he means no harm. boogaloo and dazzling love their daughter sm and after all she's a loud-ass like them too. she has their superpowers too, it's genetic! betty uses her electricity powers more as her flip-phone charger tho, lmao.

the zombies in-game are y'know... braindead and have really no personalities whatsover, besides some of their voice lines, fighting styles and the way they react to things (taking damage, using a superpower, etc.). but like they're rotating in my head hard and it's awesome to give them sum actual character. tysm for the ask again!!!!

I actually find the Homestuck and Dream SMP comparison extremely interesting if I view it as though I am a historian and news reporter. Both pieces of media are re-defining/re-defined the genres they're in, and the fandom culture has positively impacted the work itself. I'm not really interested in actually analyzing the similarities between themes of the stories themselves. Someone else who still cares about Homestuck can do that.

I'll probably actually make a very long, boring post on 4/13 this year about the Homestuck fandom and how its unmitigated chaos prepared Tumblr as a whole to handle and manage future fandoms like the Dream SMP fandom. Plus, recent developments in the website's culture as a whole making it all more habitable. IDK. It's just interesting to me that even though some things never change, some things do in fact change for the better.

For the writer ask game, Question 4 - what would this fic be about, based on the title?

'you thought so too, huh?'

Alright, so, I spent like...6-7 hours thinking about this, and came up with 7+ ideas for 3 different fandoms, but I'm gonna keep it simple and go with an ATLA idea.

This fic would be about a 'boy's night out' type thing between Aang, Sokka, and Zuko gone totally and completely wrong. I'm talking like 'Top Gear paints things on their cars and goes to Alabama' levels of holy shit this was a bad idea why would we ever think of this?

15-ish years post-war, Sokka convinces Aang and Zuko to drink cactus juice with him for the first time since the desert. It's totally fine because Mai and Azula can run the Fire Nation without him for a day or two, and there's no pressing issues for the world to deal with, anyways. It'll be just fine.

What follows is 3 days of absolute stupidity, including but not limited to:

7 fistfights.

1 high-speed police chase.

A jail breakout.

Volcano Fight II: Electric Boogaloo.

3 'Best Friends Forever' tattoos.

An accidental arson.

They somehow solve a missing persons case. No one understands how.

3 angry wives and one extremely cross Azula waiting for them when they do finally get back. ("Three days, Zuzu. That was what you told me. How the hell did you do all that in three days? Do you understand just how much shit you made me deal with?")

They only remember about 6 hours from that period with any certainty, but they're looking back on it, just smiling and giggling as they come down from their cactus-juice high, and Sokka can tell they thought it was an absolute blast, so he asks the question," You thought so, too, huh?"

They both nod. And proceed to tell him that they are never trying cactus juice again, and they are never telling this story to anyone - they can only remember about 6 hours of it with any certainty, anyways. Everything else is what others have said.

(Their kids find out anyways some time later. This turns into a multi-hour lecture from their wives, siblings, and in-laws about what not to do. All 3 are sitting their completely red-faced the entire time.)
