Country Breadery
Senol
Overoll Croissanterie
72H Artisanal Bakehouse

drove for first time on opposite side of road along great ocean road:
stopped at dif lookout and beaches
12 apostles, loch ard gorge

the grotto
the stairway to beach next to 12 apostles
our airbnb had an amazing location for stargazing
stopped and saw kangaroos and also saw koalas in trees in the wild on the way back to melbs. koalas are cute but boring the literally dont do anything, roos are my fav
sunday walked around saw museums (ngv) and TONS of markets - love markets (queen victoria market and many more), went to an AFL game (mix of rugby, soccer, football?, bball) very physical and fun to watch
monday went to brighton bathing boxes and walked around a hipster street with good vintage shopping

Django's Legacy
"Give me the beat, boys, and free my soul,
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll,
and drift away."
Dobie Gray - "Drift Away"
First, we need to talk about Django Reinhardt, the great jazz guitarist.
To quote my Artificially Intelligent Assistant - "Django Reinhardt was a legendary jazz guitarist and composer, widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential guitarists of all time."
"Jeez Vern, I haven't even gotten started yet and you're already interrupting me.  Whaaat?"
"Big deal Tom.  Like... you know... everywhere in life, somebody has to be at the top.  So like... somebody will be the tallest person in Resume Speed, Georgia and... you know... somebody will be the... you know... like... cutest guy that graduated from Schertz-Cibolo High School - Class of 1961."
"That's just the way life is Tom.  Like even in the cut-throat blood sport of Competitive Croissantery, somebody has to achieve the flakiest bake.  So what?"
"Are you done Vern?  Then consider this."
At the age of 18, Reinhardt was injured in a fire and because of this his ring finger and pinky were paralyzed.
Refusing to give up, he adapted his playing to using only the two fingers of his left hand and not only overcame this handicap - but went on to influence jazz guitar playing for decades - creating a profound and long-lasting legacy as one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
Let's ask my A.I. lady for some really cool adjectives that apply to Reinhardt's playing:  "Innovative chromaticism, harmonic complexity, rhythmic variation, incredible speed, virtuosic improvisation, unique chord playing."
"OK Vern?  Good.  So, moving on to the story.
Dicky Betts, lead guitarist for the Allman Brothers Band was at "The Farm" - which was a 432 acre hangout for the band near Juliette, Georgia in 1972.
He was noodling around on his guitar attempting to write a song that could be played with just the two fingers of his left hand in honor of the great Django Reinhardt.
He was searching for an emotion or idea to express his playing.  He had the main melody but was frustrated with it's direction.
His infant daughter came into the room and began bouncing and moving to the melody and rhythm.  Dicky started playing along with her movements trying to musically capture her joy and attitude as she was jumping and leaping with abandon around the room.
The song is a mixture of Django Reinhardt's technique and Dicky's musical genius blended with inspiration from his daughter's jubilant movements.
Later, when the song was completed, he named it after her.
The song is on the album Brothers and Sisters recorded at Capricorn Sound Studios in Macon, Georgia.
A song written by one of rock's greatest musicians, inspired by a legendary two fingered guitarist and a little girl captured by the music.
If you want to see what Jessica looked like, it is her pictured on the album cover.

One of the great songs of all time.

Review: Monforte - Viennoiserie
You have high expectations for Monforte, for they acknowledge that they are not a boulangerie nor a patisserie but a viennoiserie. For a croissant is no basic bread. As much as we associate the famed “kwa-son” to the French, its roots are traced back to Vienna, Austria. Hence the name viennoiserie (things from Vienna). Unlike most leavened breads made of water, flour and yeast, a viennoiserie is has additional ingredients such as butter, milk, cream and egg. That is the secret to the croissant’s flaky and crispy texture with its buttery rich flavours.
Tumblr media
Hence, a good croissant should not be doughy but have a nice fluff of flaky layers and Georgia McAllister, the chef-owner of Monforte understands this all too well. A pastry chef at All Are Welcome (haven’t been), she chose to bake the perfect croissant as a side hustle. Things took off and hence the beginning of Monforte.
Your cousin drives you to Carlton North, Melbourne and there you find a chic hole-in-the-wall shop of teal and glass. A small selection of ‘pastries’ are on display with its selection changing regularly save 2 staples – the plain croissant and the famed leatherwood honey and sea salt croissant.
Tumblr media
(Picture is from Broadsheet.com)
Naturally you go for its famed croissant (the benchmark) and your greedy self-picks up a few more. You and your cousin tell yourselves; it’s going to be shared with 2 more people, nothing wrong to grab a few more. Except as your future self will tell you, you gobble most of it up.
Service is impeccable with friendly ‘have a good day’ as you grab your Monforte paperbag and head back to the car.
…….
Sometime later, you and your cousin and cutting through the croissant laminated with Tasmanian leatherwood honey and sprinkled sea salt. You hear the crisp sound of flaky layers cracking through as you bring your knife down. The croissant depresses at the knife’s edge. It soon springs apart into two fluffed halfs of perfectly brown croissants.
You take a bite and the sweet honey with spiced notes comes through intermingly with the buttery and milky flavour of the croissant. The sea salt comes as a nice finish cutting through the sweetness and leaving behind a savouriness that makes you want more. The croissant half is soon gone and you proceed to tackle the next ones.

(picture from Monforte’s website)
The other flavours were well balanced and good. When the base (croissant) is good, its quite hard to go wrong with good only flavours like cheese, mortadella and raspberry. But the highlight is definitely the leatherwood honey and sea salt.
The price of the croissant is naturally not run-of-the-mill. Expect to pay at least $7 but frankly I would rate this over Lune Croissanterie. Thus, if you ever find yourself in Carlton North or planning to queue up for some famous pastry, perhaps you should make a trip to Monforte Viennoiserie instead.
