Lose Control
pairing: rhysand x shy!reader
Tumblr media
warnings: nothing really, some swearing and the normal amount of thirst that comes with thinking about a particular High Lord naked and wet.
summary: Poor Illyrian baby Rhys who just really needs your hands rubbing his back—in the bathtub.
——
A deep groan pulls you from your crochet, the yarn ball rolling on the floor beneath you as you make easy work of the flower pattern Azriel had taught you a few days prior. “That bad?”
Rhysand nods, shoes scuffing against the floor before collapsing in the couch across from you. “Everything hurts.”
It’s no less embarrassing the second time around how quickly you set your items down, hands smoothing out the less than appropriate fabric of your nightgown when you stand. “I can get a bath going?” You offer softly, fingers crossing delicately before you and Rhysand can’t help the sleepy little smile that tugs at the corner of his mouth at the sight of you, all silky material and socks with fluffy puffs that had little bunnies dangling from them.
“That sounds nice bunny,” He murmurs, finger reaching out to flick at the little puff. “Can you sprinkle some of those little salts of yours in there too?”
“Of course.” You’re gone shortly after, crochet flowers long forgotten on the couch as you rush off to your room to fetch some bath salts, oils and a vial of bubbles. Rhys is still on the couch when you return, shirt off and pants unbuttoned as he laid on his back with one arm draped over his eyes. It takes more effort than you’re willing to admit to tear your gaze away from the hard muscles of his chest, his defined arms and abdomen so chiseled you wondered if the High Lord would ever ask you to massage that part of him too. You shake the thought off as you head to the bathing chambers, gathering large towels and pouring salts that smelled of lemongrass and oranges into the quickly filling tub.
It’s halfway full and beginning to steam when you add the bubbles, a content smile forming when you light scented candles and drag a stool over to hold a two knuckle pour of some expensive whiskey Rhysand kept near his work table. “It’s ready,” You call out, fingers dipping in the bubbly water to test the temperature and when you’re sure it’s perfect, you turn off the faucet, hands drying on the thigh of your nightgown.
He takes a while to enter, shoulders slouching and feet pattering against the marbled floors when he finally does, dark hair hangs on his forehead when he takes in the scene before him. “Bubbles too,” Rhysand murmured in appreciation, blocking you before you leave, a finger raising to bop your nose with a little smile. “Cute.”
The blush that fans across your cheeks is nearly as warm as the water in the giant tub built to fit the large wings Rhys usually kept hidden. You’re out of the room before he can make any comments about your body’s reaction to his words—his fingers touching you, no matter how fleeting it may have been.
You’re settled back into the couch when you hear the High Lord sink into the water, a breathy groan pulling free and your thighs clench together as you busy your hands with the yarn and hook. You don’t get very far, just falling into a rhythm when Rhysand calls out, “Can you come here?”
“What do you need?”
“Come here.” You swear you hear him chuckle when you huff out a breath, tossing your flower aside once more and your steps are a little snappier than usual when you stand near the door. “Inside.”
A pause, fingers twitching at your sides and you hope he can’t hear your heart thudding. It comes out no higher than a whisper, palms clammy at the thought of him—naked and covered by nothing but bubbles and water. “I’m not sure that’s appropriate.”
“Oh?” It comes out a little teasing, door creaking open by dark tendrils of power that urge you closer. “You’d dare deny your High Lord?”
“Well, no but—“ You eyes are trained on the polish of your toes when you’re fully pushed inside, the gorgeous male splayed about in the tub, feet outstretched and arms loosely holding each side but the first thing you really notice are the giant membranous wings peeking out over the edge. “Friends like you and I don’t really make a habit of spending time together in your bathing chambers.”
Rhysand clicks his tongue against the roof of his mouth, toes playfully splashing at the water. “Like you and I?”
Your nerves build—Rhys always did love riling you up, constantly murmuring some comment about enjoying the way you blush for him, the way you have to completely turn away to compose yourself when he offers flirtatious words in passing. “You’re my High Lord.”
“And you’re one of my closest friends.”
Just friends.
The words repeat themselves in your brain like one of the catchy songs they played in Velaris but every time they reach your ears it feels wrong. “Yes.”
“Exactly and friends help each other, right? You’re just helping.”
Your brows furrow, momentarily recalling when similar words had crossed your mind a week prior when Rhysand had stripped from the waist up and all but demanded you rub his back. “Wait a second—“
The water ripples as Rhysand moves, back muscles contracting as he twists to face you, a brow raised and a lazy smile on handsome features. “Come here bunny,” He beckoned you closer with that same two finger flick, head tilting just a little and even with this being the master bedchambers, the walls felt like they were closing in with each step forward. “Need your hands. Can you do that for me?”
And like a fly buzzing into a spiderweb, you’re caught in his trap.
Rhysand’s fingers curled around the glass left on the stool, tipping the bottom, a motion intended for you to grab the little stool and sit behind him. So, you comply, movements slow and weary as your hands touch the smooth wood and slide it over. The backs of your thighs sink into the smooth surface, shaky hands grabbing at the bar of soap sitting to his right. “What if someone walks in?”
“Let them,” He sighs, knocking back the whiskey with a little groan. “I’m sure Cass and Az are fighting over who gets you next as we speak—they’ve been talking about it all week.”
“Why not just hire someone?” You ask, fingers slick with the soap as you start at his shoulders with slow, kneading motions. “It can’t be healthy to always be so stiff—doesn’t it affect your fighting?”
Rhysand only nods, eyes fluttering shut and face contorting gently when you follow the line of where neck meets shoulder. “You do it much better. Must be because of your tiny little hands.” A noise pulls from his throat when slippery fingers knead away knots and bands of muscle wound so tight, you were unsure how he’d even managed to put his shirt on.
You repeat the motions over and over, fingers tracing over dips and ridges of his back before shifting over to his arms, your hair falling free from its confines to graze over the top of his wing and the sound he lets out is pure sin.
Your hands retract instinctively, soapy fingers slipping against your thighs when you scramble to your feet. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
Rhysand’s breathing has quickened, chest heaving more than he had been before and the grip he has on the sides of the tub is sure to split the stone in two. “It’s fine—you didn’t hurt me. They’re just sore and it makes them a lot more sensitive than usual.”
Your heart is still pounding a beat faster than usual, hands hanging at your sides, unsure if you were supposed to continue or make your leave.
“Keep going,” Rhys urges, waving the arm you’d been oiling up in the air. “Just go slow.” You obey, hands carefully returning to hard muscle being extra careful when you got close to his wings—even if the noises he’d made from touching them had been branded in your brain for all eternity. “That’s it,” He praises, eyes half-lidded as he sunk deeper into the water.
It’s easy getting lost in the motions when you’re admiring every dip and curve, every scar and the stretch marks that came when growing from a boy to man. You stop once a little snore pulls free, lips parted and features relaxed as your High Lord slept.
The sound of your feet on the glossy floors pulls Az and Cass from their place in the sitting room, brows raised to your sheepish expression. “He feel asleep in the tub and I’m scared he might drown.”
Cassian raised a brow, smirk forming when taking in the soapy hands and the smell of the massage oils before frowning. “You don’t rub me when I’m in the tub.”
“You’ve never asked.”

Current WIP, Brighton Tee by Cheryl Mokhtari. The yarn is a cotton/linen I was originally using in a crochet top I left dormant for too long and forgot where I was at in the pattern (then decided I didn't really like the pattern after all), and then considered weaving into some really luxurious towels. But now it's this!

ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ Randall “Pink” Floyd x reader
Warnings: Heavy makeouts, drinking, smoking
Summary: Pink and you have a secret agreement that’s reserved for secluded spots and late nights but what happens when you want more than that?
✧・゚: *✧・゚:* ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* ✧・゚: *✧・゚
The orange sky illuminated Michelle’s room by hitting her sun catchers with light. They casted a multitude of colors inside providing the room a glow. Orange and yellow and pink covered every inch of her room.
The both of you laid sprawled onto her bed. She had her guitar straddled on her lap slowly playing some melodic tune. Her cigarette hung out of her mouth, tight between her lips. Its smoke polluted the air tight room. A towel was placed under her bedroom door to prevent smoke from leaking into her house and notifying her mom of her little habit.
You on the other hand flipped through some magazine she had laying around. Lazily pointing out the newest albums that made it on record. You let out an exhausted sigh.
“This blows.” You pout throwing the magazine to the side. You slip off of her bed and stumble towards her record player.
Flipping through the records you throw on the newest vinyl from KISS. Pressing the needle onto the vinyl you let out a sigh.
You hear the faint sound of Michelle’s mom on the hallways telephone. “Turn that off quick-.” Michelle snaps in your direction. You lift the needle from the record. She smushes her cigarette into an ash tray hidden in her drawer. She grabs some of her perfume and sprays a generous amount in the air.
Michelle places her guitar to the side and jumps off her bed pressing her ear to the wall. You accompany her doing the same.
“Who? Who is this? Michelle’s not here-“ Her mom lies and Michelle rips open her bedroom door and races down the hallway towards the phone. You peek your head out of the door smiling at the scene of Michelle grabbing the phone while her mother fights for it.
They argue back and forth while Michelle holds the telephone against her ear. “It’s Michelle!-“ she’s cut off by her mother “You’re not going anywhere, Michelle!” Her mom scolds her trying to grab the telephone out of her hand.
Michelle disregards her mother continuing to talk through the telephone. “Yep- yep right now!” She slams the telephone back on the wall and runs towards her room. Her mother yells after her. “Michelle Buroughs you’re not going anywhere!”
Michelle swoops into her room and you let out a laugh backing away from the door as she slams a chair sitting next to it up against the door knob.
Her mom tries to open it yelling incoherently. “Get dressed, man we’re going to Pinks!” She rips her shirt and digs through her closet throwing something at you in the process.
“I made this for you.” You unravel the piece of clothing that she threw revealing a cropped crochet top that was patterned beautifully.
“Michelle! This is cool, man so cool.” You glee taking off of your shirt and slipping on the crochet.
“I made one for myself too.” She already has put hers on and layered it with one of her vests. She opens her drawer grabbing all of her pot filled ziplock bags and shoved them in her bell bottoms.
While Michelle’s mom relentlessly tries getting into the room you slip on your sandals and follow Michelle who has opened the window. “Love you, mom!” Her mom bickers through the door. She begins to sneak out of it letting out a few raspy laughs before falling onto the ground.
You follow her routine and close the window letting out laughs watching her mom finally open the door to an empty room. Michelle grabs your hand and sprints through her front lawn.
“Man, you’re fucked!” You choke on your laughs following her down the sidewalk. She reaches into her jeans pulling out another cigarette and lighting it.
After a few puffs she hands it to you which you happily take. Putting the cigarette to your lips you intake a deep drag before handing it back feeling the wave of nicotine soothe your nerves.
“Fucked? I’m always fucked. When isn’t she on my ass about everything?” She complains while turning over her shoulder to the sound of a familiar car.
The loud motor belongs to the beloved orange 1970 Pontiac GTO judge (you know the car’s model by heart because of how much Pickford brags about it). Also known as “Pickford’s woman.” Beloved was an understatement because it was worshipped by Pickford. It was his baby with a brand new paint job and muffler, it was hot.
He pulls up to the curb slowing down and rolling his window down. “You ladies need a ride?” He chuckles staring down Michelle. The two have been inseparable since they started dating in the middle of junior year. His eyes wander up and down her body to which she shines a toothy grin.
“I’m not supposed to talk to strangers.” She slyly states walking slower and closer to the car. Pickford rubs his chin before reaching into his shirts pocket and pulling out a joint.
“But I have candy, want some?” He stops the car and she opens the car door jumping into his arms. She presses her pink lips against his while strategically grabbing the joint out of his hand.
They lock lips together for a few moments as you open the back of the car and plop inside trying to look at anything other than them.
They both break away for a moment and Michelle pecks his cheek while putting the joint into her mouth. She hands her lit cigarette to you to finish while she holds the joint between her teeth as she flicks her lighter. The bright flame glows and soon enough the car is filled with smoke.
Her cigarette has become nothing but the orange end so you throw it out the window. She picks the joint out of her mouth and twiddles it in her fingers before passing it to you which you graciously accept. You place it in between your lips and suck in. The smoke clusters in your lungs and you let out a soft cough. Michelle smiles turning up the radio as you pass it to Pickford.
Soon enough the sun that barely peeked over the horizon started to set as Pickford parks his car on the curb with the many others that have crowded in front of Pink’s house.
The engine rumbles as he turns the key and you slide out of side. Many other kids have started their drinking frenzy on his lawn. Some already tripping over their own feet as they giggle towards the keg.
Michelle takes a glance around before interlinking her hand with Pickford who grins. You follow the both of them up his driveway.
Pinks house is identical to Pickfords. Two floors and a freshly mowed lawn that is now littered with teenagers. You watch as two freshman run out of the house followed by some very familiar seniors.
Somehow those paddles haven’t broken yet. The seniors catch up to them doubling them over onto Pickford’s car.
“Get off of that car! I just got her waxed man.” Pickford yells with his fist in the air. The seniors grab the freshman’s collars before throwing them onto the lawn and plowing paddles to their asses.
You shake your head not too fond of the beating ritual that has become a tradition at your school. “They’re straight up beating them senseless now.” You complain to Michelle who shows emotion towards the freshman.
“They tried to sneak in the party, what did you expect to happen?” Michelle follows Pickford into the house. Bodies are packed into every room of Pink’s house.
Girls are twiddling with their hair watching the boys play beer pong on Pink’s family dining room table. What a great use. You spot a familiar face on the steps. Slater is zoned out staring into the ceiling. His eyes puffy and red like usually. Pickford and Michelle disappear into the sea of people.
“Slater, are you okay?” You ask a little concerned for the boy who looks like he’s on cloud nine. More like cloud ten thinking about it now. It takes a moment for the question to register in his mind but his face lights up at seeing you.
“Y/N! Hey man, yeah man I’m all good.” His voice trails off as he finishes his sentence. “I can’t believe this is the last week of summer.. it just went swoosh, man, you know?” He makes a wind noise emphasizing the swoosh part.
“It sucks, this summer blew past.” You pitch in sympathizing with his feeling of sadness towards summer ending. “I think I’m gonna go get a drink, see you later?” He points finger guns at me before getting off the stairs and disappearing outside preassumingly trying to find someone with a joint he can bum off of.
You enter the kitchen to see the island table filled with different cases of booze and spiked punch that’s sure to have you blackout by the end of the night. You settle for a beer and wedge the cap between the counter popping it off.
You press the brown bottle to your lips taking a swig of the bitter but sweet drink then continue roaming around the house. Then you spot him, Pink is talking to a group of people. You couldn’t imagine a football player indulging with less popular students but Pink has proved you wrong.
Everyone loves him, the geeks, the preps, the jocks… everyone. He spots you, his graze settles and he smiles. He bids a goodbye and keeps his eyes on you until he walks past you. Your que.
You follow behind him as you watch him walk upstairs. A few seconds later when you make sure no one is looking you walk up the stairs. You’re surprised there isn’t a line of couples making out upstairs yet. You try to find him but a door opens up and a hand grabs you and pushes you into the dimly lit room.
In a split second his lips are on yours. You accidentally squeak in suprise. You’re pushed up against a wall with hands wandering all over your body. Cupping your breasts and gripping onto your sides.
“What took you so long?” He mutters against your neck. You let out a slight laugh. “I didn’t know you were having a party tonight. Where was my direct invite?” You can feel his lips smile against your sensitive neck. He continues biting your skin.
This is your little secret. Ever since Simone and him broke up he has taken a liking to you. A quiet liking that’s reserved for secluded places and sneaking around after dark. For hushed moans and foggy car windows.
You can’t say you don’t like being his secret because the adrenaline of it all keeps you going. It keeps you high all the time. He scrunches your hair in his fingers bringing your lips back to his. The taste of beer still lingers on his pink lips. A soft groan leaves his mouth.
He’s desperate and so are you as your lips continue in a feral manner. He pushes you away. His eyes finally take in your apparence. You watch as his brown irises scan over every part of your body. Taking in every curve and dip. He wraps his hand in the fabric of your crochet shirt.
“Where’d you get this?” He asks as you smile. “Michelle made it for me.”
He smirks looping his finger in between the crochet.
“She’s gonna get you in trouble for wearing something like that.” He lifts it off of you and presses his lips to your chest moving down towards your stomach. He’s gentle, just how you like it. You intake a sharp breath. You can’t tell if it’s the beer but your mind feels so foggy and distant.
“Says you.. can your shirt can anymore unbuttoned?” His blue long sleeved blouse is unbuttoned til his chest. You kind of wish you left a few marks on his collar bone. Maybe it would give everyone else a hint but
you can only imagine how many girls have stared at his chest tonight.
He gruffly laughs twirling his finger in a strand of your hair. “It can.” Your fingers dance around the white buttons and soon his shirt falls off. He smirks against your lips and pushes your body against his. His warmth surrounds you like a hug. It makes you tingly and needy.
Just as your hands travel lower inter-looping with his bulky belt the knob on the door shakes. It startles the both of you causing you to bounce back. Pink coughs “What do you want? I’m getting changed, man!” He yells. His chest rises and falls in a rhythmic matter.
“It’s me.. Jennifer.” There’s silence as Pink gathers the clothes off the ground and hands you your top back. “Give me on second-“ he says as he buttons back his shirt up. You lift the top over your head and adjust it to your body.
In hushed whispers you start to bicker with him “What does she want? Why is she looking for you?” You ask in a quiet whisper and he shakes his head “I don’t know here- hide here.” He opens his closet door revealing a mess of clothes.
“Are you serious, Pink?” He hushes you into the closet and closes the door. You angrily curse at yourself for being so easily hidden away into a closet. You peek through the little cracks. He fixes his jeans to hide the uncomfortable tent that has started to grow under the denim fabric.
He unlocks the knob and Jennifer walks in. Her black wavy droops around her shoulders. Her shirt is tied up showcasing her midwaist and the new bell bottoms she bought. You roll your eyes.
“I’ve been looking everywhere for you, where you have been?” She coos leaning close to Pink. He tries to back up but she grabs his collar. Internally, you scream.
He pushes her away “This isn’t really a good time, I was just looking for my lighter-“ he points to the lighter on the sled but she shushes him moving closer.
“It’s okay..” he tries to back up once again. A voice yells down the hallway “Pink! You up here, man?” It sounds like Wooderson.
He enters the room as Jennifer moves to the side. Wooderson pushes his hands into his pockets. “Sorry man, didn’t know you were busy.” He laughs while looking at the two of them. Jennifer slyly smiles and Pink shakes his head.
“No, I’m not.” Pink tells Wooderson as he bobs his head. “Good. Uhh, man Mitch is tryna find you ‘cause the seniors are givin’ him a hard time about coming inside.” Pink looks towards Jennifer and shrugs his shoulders “Duty calls.”
The three of them leave the room and you’re left alone in the closet. You feel like crying. You want to find Michelle and drink until you can’t feel anything.
You open the closet door and stand infront of Pinks mirror straightening out your hair trying to soothe yourself. You leave Pink’s room and avoid the couples that have now migrated upstairs to continue their make out sessions.
Walking down the stairs you run into Cynthia. “Y/N! Where have you been?” Her voice is soft and genuine. “I-I don’t really know-“ your voice breaks Cynthia’s lips turn down into a frown.
“Oh are you okay?” She asks standing close. “No, not really.” You respond solemnly. “What happened? You don’t have to tell me.” You shake your head not wanting to share the pain you just experienced.
“I really just need to drink.” You state to the redhead. “In that case..”
<—————————————->
Cynthia has never been much of a party girl. Her clique isn’t really into drinking or partying they like to spend their time playing poker on Fridays. They don’t even own their own lighters or cigarettes and you’ve only seen Cynthia smoke once which resulted in a coughing fit.
But she was cool in her own kind of way. A quirky way that made her fun to be around and talk to. A girl that you could rely on especially on a bad night when you need a reasonable shoulder to lean on. You couldn’t find Michelle anywhere and guessed her and Pickford are long gone in his car somewhere. Cynthia offered to stay with you when you couldn’t find them.
Cynthia had blossomed once she had started going out with Wooderson. You didn’t think it would last because he was already out of high school and had a different outlook on life but in the end it worked out. The two of them were going steady and she had finally started to enjoy her dreaded high school years.
Now the two of you had found solace on the stairs of Pink’s house. She kept her beer sipping occasionally while you gulped down every last drop of yours until it was empty and you went to grab another one. That’s how your night started to go.
Pink was floating around the rooms. You could feel his eyes on you every so often but once you tried to meet his gaze he looked away and continued talking. He was a social floater despite being a football player. Usually the jocks stay away from anyone outside their little clique. But he’s different. He doesn’t care about people’s social status or beating freshman. Maybe that’s what made him so likeable. The beers had only fogged your thinking but you could still feel the jealously in your heart.
The beer buzz had slowly started to hit you. You went to stand up from the stairs and the world started to spin. The crowd blended together and you felt woozy. Cynthia pulls you back to the stairs.
“Bad idea.” She laughs sipping on her beer. You fall back onto the carpeted stairs and put your beer to the side. “The first time Mike drank he didn’t get up once. When he finally did he was way past five beers and totally folded over onto the ground.” She reminisces the memory as you smile.
“I remember the first time I drank. I completely overlooked how much I could handle and ended up blacking out in Michelle’s car.” Cynthia laughs budging you. “No way.”
You nod your head “Yes way, man.” She looks ahead to see Mike and Tony making their way into the crowded scene. Cynthia perks up “You wanna come hang with us?” She asks you shake your head.
“I think I’m gonna leave in a few.. thanks though.” She smiles waving as she walks to the group. You start to stand up as well trying to stabilize yourself against the wall then began your small walk towards the door.
You push through many different people. Some you don’t even know the names of. You look at a clock to read the time “11:30 pm”? There’s no way you’ve been here that long. You rub your temples stumbling out of the house.
You look around the curb and the driveway trying to find a car you know but unfortunately you’re out of luck and it looks like you’re walking home. You rub your arms and take a sharp breath of air starting to walk in between the numerous cars that congest the driveway.
Just as you start your walk down the driveway a hand pulls you back you let out a yelp. You spin around on your heels. Of course, it’s the last person you want to see. Pink.
“Where are you going?” He asks as your face turns sour. “I’m leaving, I don’t want to be here anymore.” As you try to turn around Pink walks infront of you as you keep walking forward. He faces you walking backwards keeping up your pace.
“Why? You can’t walk home alone, you’re drunk!” He argues with you but you want no part of it. “Well I don’t want to walk with you!” You try to slip past Pink but he counters it.
“What’s wrong with you?” He asks as he stops you by holding your shoulders. “You! Why was she trying to get with you? Were you flirting with her?” Your voice breaks as he sighs.
“No! I don’t even talk to her. Why are you so upset?” His arrogance to the situation has you frustrated. “I don’t know, maybe because she was trying to fuck you!” You shrug his hands of your shoulders and start walking past him once again.
“I wouldn’t fuck her. I only like you!” He admits while you stop in your tracks. “I don’t want any other girls trying to get with you. I hate the fact that they all think you’re single while you’re sneaking around me.” You start to ramble your feelings while tears prick your eyes.
“I wish other girls could know about you and me. I’m tired of keeping this a secret. I know if I don’t hold your hand some other girl will..” You continue, he turns quiet. He walks behind you and wraps his arms around your body. He pulls you close and presses his lips against your ears.
“What’s stopping you from being seen with me?” He kisses your neck as happiness bubbles inside of you. You wipe away your tears and smile. “Nothing.” You mutter as he turns your around and kisses your lips. You’re sure a bunch of eyes are on you and him. In this moment you don’t care. All you can focus on is Pinks hands around your waist.
He holds your face while your lips connect slowly. You smile against his lips and he pulls away. “You still want to go home?” His low voice coos in your ear.
He catches your lips for a quick kiss.“No… I don’t.”

DIY SUMMER: Groovy button-ups and hand-painted jackets to get your Sims ready for summer!
Download: Here (SFS) I love sewing and DIY projects IRL, but I realllly don't need more fabric in my stash so I made these instead. 🧵 These are recolors of base game meshes, so no mesh is needed! The crochet shirt uses a crochet pattern I made in Substance Designer, so it has a normal map and is alpha mapped to be transparent in between the crochet parts, which looks v nice. The solid shirts are made from vintage tea towels and ... towel towels ... which I sourced images for from from Ebay/Etsy. 🌈🌻🪐🎵 @mmfinds @maxismatchccworld@simbfinds@adoring-ccfinds@mmoutfitters@public-ccfinds

you've probably seen this zigzag trim called ricrac/ rick rack, especially if you do craft supply thrifting or work with vintage materials (or grew up between the 1950s & 1980s).
Tumblr media
(image from a 2022-23 article touting a rick rack revival)
✨️🧵🪡 Did you know rick rack was invented in the 1860s? 🧵🪡✨️
First known as “waved crochet braid” (catchy huh?), rick rack first appeared in the 1860’s but didn’t take on its modern form or name until around 1880. During the 1890’s rick rack sewing trim was imported for use by American sewists as a decorative edging for dresses, aprons, and lingerie. It was also incorporated into lace and then used to decorate curtains, bedding, and other home linens.
After a brief slump in popularity, rick rack ribbon once again came into vogue during the 1910’s when American manufacturers began to produce it. One of these was William E. Wright & Sons, which was founded in Massachusetts in 1897.
Cotton rick rack was in high demand from the 1930’s through the 1950’s when home sewists were upcycling cotton sacks used to pack commodities such as flour, cornmeal, and livestock feed to make dish towels, aprons, and clothing for their families. Wrights rick rack was prized because it was durable; it would tolerate rigorous laundering. The many choices of Wrights rick rack colors complimented the bright flour sack prints. Adding a bit of rick rack helped alleviate the stigma of having to use the feed sack fabric that was available.
After another lull during the 1960’s, rick rack experienced a resurgence of popularity during the 1970’s thanks to Laura Ingalls’ influence. But rick rack hasn’t ever really gone out of style, and it is available in a rainbow of currently popular colors.
(Missouri Star Quilt Co. on Wright's Rick Rack)
more interesting details on early-20th-C history, from Wikipedia...
During the 1910s, rickrack experienced a resurgence in popularity, and American manufacturers began producing rickrack to supply to the domestic market. Among other uses, this rickrack was incorporated into crocheted lace. Books of designs, such as Nufashond Rick Rack Book, helped to popularize the craft.
In rural America in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, rickrack was used to decorate feed sack dresses. These dresses were worn as everyday attire, and were constructed from the large cotton bags that flour, chicken feed, and other goods were shipped in. Since the food had to be shipped in fabric bags anyway, the flour mills competed with each other by using attractive, colorful fabrics that the buyer could either resell or upcycle into dresses, aprons, nightgowns, dishtowels, and other clothing and household items. Adding trim like rickrack was a way to reduce the stigma around needing to use whatever fabric was available, rather than buying it from a store.
I fell down this rabbit hole when I saw Anna wearing this hat in the early 1920s of Downton Abbey s3:
Tumblr media
though on closer examination I see that her hatband accent is not actually ricrac, but rather velvet ribbon woven into a ricrac-style zizag pattern. given Downton's notorious attention to historical set & costume detail, & ricrac's contemporary popularity, I wonder if more "fine family" types & their staff picked up the visual trend in higher quality materials. Very cool!

How various Masters of the Air characters crochet, the list no one asked for:
Ken: Makes everything out of twine because no one cares if it gets smudged. Half the containers holding small hardware is little buckets he's made. He also makes standing mats so the boys get some sort of foot cushioning when they work. He swaps squares the size of the farm ladies's dining chairs for their pretty lace work, which he passes over to the fellas to send their girls. The boys pay him in cigarettes. He swaps the cigarettes for sweets when he goes into town, keeps a couple of pieces for himself and just happens to have a couple of pieces every few times he sees the kids around.
Robert: Technically proficient but makes him sleepy.
Bucky: Always trying a new technique. Cannot be trusted not to jab you with a hook if you're sitting next to him. Will say "Hold your hands like this" to Buck and use him as a yarn swift.
Buck: Tiny thread master. Makes very intricate doilies and curtains because he will be the best goddamnit.
Curt: He will make a granny square. Then another granny square. Then more granny squares. Other motifs, too. Never joins them. Just has piles of them everywhere.
Dickie: Is the only reason Curt's motifs are ever turned into blankets or bags or anything else. Can crochet but prefers the putting together part of it all.
Hambone: Fastest stitcher of the entire 100th. Will shout at you if you try to talk to him while he's counting.
Brady: Hats. Nothing but hats. Doesn't give a shit to make anything else. Everyone has a Brady hat.
Everett: Sweater expert. Made matching flying sweaters from him and Douglass.
Douglass: Great at socks. Made socks to match the sweaters.
Jack: Scarves and fingerless gloves. He likes matching stitch patterns. He's pretty sure he can find a good stitch pattern for each fella in his command. He's right.
Chick: Every chair set in his office (and there are several styles) were made by him. Filet crochet King.
Harry: Edgings because he can't concentrate for more than five minutes at a time without thinking about four other things. Towel edgings are perfect.
Bubbles: Blanket King. Coziest field hospital in the whole Air Army thanks to him.
Demarco: Toys for the kids (and Meatball). Comes up with a Meatball plushie on the fly, and then all the kids want one.

Alright this is the nonsense I've been up to. A whole ton of beginner crochet projects as I binged all of supernatural:
Tumblr media
(1) Infinity scarf ft. the wool my mom gave me (I tried blocking for the first time and it turned the edges a bit wonky fml)
(2) a cotton dish towel with some kind of shell stitch + a border (just a single crochet trim, I didn't have enough kicking around for the actual pattern)
(3) currently in progress: started a corner-to-corner moss stitch blanket, using some nice wool from my sister!
Also in October, this scarf using wool from my friend (her own abandoned "learn to knit" project, and returned to her as a Thing!)
Tumblr media
And a little swatch to try and learn mosaics:

And a whole mess of other bits and bobs while I try and learn wtf I'm doing:

I wet blocked the collar I finished today (ignore the ends, I hate weaving them in and do it last second). Unfortunately I did not have a piece of cardboard big enough to pin it out. But a towel and some heavy weights worked for this.
The two back pieces are designed to be sewn to the front at the shoulder seam. Then you'll close it in the back with a button or two and some loops.
The next step is to get some fabric and make a shirt for this. I have a shirt that's woven (no knit) to use as a pattern. I just have to pull out an old sheet and use it to make a mock-up. I'm thinking of using a dark blue and keeping the fabric behind the crochet so you can more easily see the filet pattern.
This is based off a yoke pattern from the 1910s. I had to modify it heavily because the original used size 60 thread (why? WHY?!?!) and I made my version with a much more sane size 10 thread.

I started crocheting this summer and fell in love with it. I made a fuckton of hats and a few scarves and two blankets and a few headbands as gifts, as well as that and more for myself.
For one of those blankets I found two different colors and asked the recipient (my grandma) which color was better: Caron cinnamon swirl cakes in Beach Towel or Oyster. We both instantly agreed that the oyster color was kinda bland and meh, while the Beach Towel color was amazing and gorgeous, so she got a blanket. But I had already bought the oyster to show her, and I had seen a bunch of hexagon cardigans and wanted to try that concept (I do not use patterns, I just riff on construction concepts).
I then proceeded to ask which of the other grad students if they wanted to have the finished cardigan, because I would never wear 1) a crochet garment because they are UnComfy and 2) the color because it was so boring. One immediately jumped at it.
Took it home to my mom, and she decided she needed a second one in the same color (gross) once I worked out the bugs on the first one.
I got distracted during the making because it’s so repetitive and eventually I had a hexagon that had ENORMOUS sleeves just utterly extremely too big but instead of ripping back I wanted to see if I could salvage them somehow, so I joined them and did some VERY quick decreases. They actually looked amazing as bishop sleeves, so now a THIRD friend is getting one. In the same color.
I just. The color. I hate it. But I made a thing so that’s cool:

Hey crocheters making holiday gifts rn, if you need something fast, easy, customizable, and very appreciated, check this out
The only reason I know about these is because when I learned to crochet, I started getting requests for them. I've made them as part of Christmas gifts before and they're always appreciated (like, genuinely). Once I was chatting with the cashier as I was buying the towels and when she found out what I was making she offered to pay me to make her some.
I've never used the pattern above because I just kind of wing it, but if you want one, these seem pretty basic.
Some tutorials will tell you to use a rotary cutter to get the holes in the towel but that's totally not necessary, just buy towels a tapestry needle will poke through.

Sooooo I've been crocheting...
... and that's resulted in over 300 different Marble Fidgets. I'm having a lot of fun selling them locally, at physical shops downtown, and to friends via word of mouth, but I'd love to expand!! While I haven't found a great website to sell these fidgets, I wanted to share them here and see if anyone was interested. 😊 I've been selling them for $2 each, which doesn't include shipping.
They're all about 2 1/2 inches long, and great for discretely fidgeting. Often, they're involved in my happy stims. With the gentle thumping of the marble as I shake it back and forth, the feeling of the cotton yarn rubbing on my thumb, the back and forth of the marble as I push it with my thumb or with both my thumbs, or spinning the fidget so I can watch the pattern change with the different rows... I really like these haha. My favorite is the multicolored ones, because I like how the colors change and shift into one another. But the solid red was my first, and by far had my favorite texture. (A little softer than the striped multicolor fidgets.)
They're very easy to clean, as they're made of cotton yarn. You can either spot clean, taking a wet rag or paper towel to it, cleaning off any dirt or stains. Or, throw it in a delicate's bag to go in the washer and dryer with your usual load of laundry. The texture will be changed after the washer, but that will be fixed after playing with it for about fifteen minutes to half an hour.
Here's a few collages of my Marble Fidgets!!

If you're interested, please send me a message and I'll get back to you asap! 😁

hi :)) you seem to know tons about crochet and i'm just starting out so please can you tell me if you know any really simple patterns for me to try? i can do single crochet (just), but should i try to learn the other stitches first? i'd really appreciate it 😊
I LOVE helping people with crochet!!
I do want to encourage you to learn new stitches now, but I want you to learn them by making granny squares. Why granny squares? Because it'll teach you several skills at once while not requiring you to make a big project all at once. You already know chain stitch because you can single crochet, so that's one down. But you'll also learn how to work in the round and how to double crochet.
Best part: If you like the rhythm of it, you can just add and add and add to one square and have a whole blanket.
I found this tutorial that looks good
There's also all sorts of patterns for smaller granny squares. And a lot of different granny squares in general. But, just for the basic granny square, there's all kinds of pattern options. Here's a bunch of patterns to just give you a sense of how you can use granny squares.
Now, if you want to just keep working on single crochet for a bit, here's my personal washcloth pattern. It's not fancy. You'll need some worsted weight (size 4) crochet cotton (Lily's Sugar & Cream is super easy to find and literally made for this sort of project) and a 5.0mm hook (an H-hook, but given my issues with hook sizes today...):
Chain 40.
SC 39 across. Ch 1. Turn.
SC into first SC. Chain 1. Skip 1 SC. SC into next SC. Repeat across, ending with a single crochet. Ch 1. Turn.
SC across. Ch 1. Turn.
Repeat until you have 39 rows.
And if you want to make a matching hand towel, Start with a chain of 124 and use the same stitch pattern until the hand towel is...hand-towel wide. I don't know the exact measurement.
Here's a bunch of single crochet patterns from a blog I've found very useful for other crochet stuff. I think this blog is the one where I learned my preferred mosaic crochet technique.
Lastly, absolutely make sure to use some sort of stitch marker. You don't have to buy any, just loop a bit of yarn through the first and last stitch of whatever you're making if you're having issues seeing those stitches (very common problem), and I bet you'll see your edges cleaning up real nice. Also, you can literally never use enough stitch markers. I have to on starting chains when you have to skip stitches otherwise I can't see them clearly enough.
I hope this is all helpful! Feel free to hit me up if you have questions or concerns or questions or need encouragement!
