he crochets. not WELL, mind you, but he can make a mean granny square. though because he does it as a way to relax, his stitches always start out incredibly tight before eventually loosening a little bit later as he calms down, and so all of his granny squares end up kind of wonky.

anyway something something his hands and his humanity and using a part of him that is so well-known for destruction to instead create something for once.

hey so fun fact. i did some maths the other day bc people keep telling me to sell the blankets I make. i was like hm i wonder how much id have to charge to make at least minimum wage.

for example, the blanket i'm currently working on took four months to finish. i worked on it pretty consistently after work and on the weekends, about 4 hours every evening, and about 20 on weekends, which adds up to 40 hours a week conveniently.

now, we dont have a minimum wage in austria, its all collective agreements, but minimum wage in the textile industry at my education level is 16 euros an hour before taxes, so ill use that as a base assumption.

4 months of 4 weeks each, 40 hours every week:

4*4*40 = 640 hours

640 hours à 16€:

640*16 = 10240 €

thats at absolute minimum wage. without materials. in order to account for the time i spent developing my skills and also. you know. getting to eat and live and shit after taxes id have to raise that minimum wage significantly.

who here would pay 10k plus for a blanket? show of hands please

I thrive on scrap yarn projects. I actually buy big bags of secondhand skein remnants specifically for this purpose, and supplement them with scraps excavated from my yarn baskets or frogged from dead projects. I love the challenge of balancing different colors, weights, and materials into something pleasing. I love it as a test of my skill and creativity.

It's also fun when I go digging through my stash desperate to find, say, something kind of bulky in a warm color, and feel like I struck gold when I pull out an orange ball the size of my fist. How fortuitous indeed.

With it being one year since I joined Tumblr, I thought I’d share something extra special that I’ve managed to keep from posting. Although I know it’s not 100% accurate, I did crochet this free hand and there’s no mistaking that I managed to make Globby into yarn form. ;) ^_^ This blanket is a little over 6ft long and I started it in December 2019 and finished it May 2020, just working on it a little each day until it was completed. I know it’s out of the ordinary, but I love to take characters I love and make fan art of them in various forms. (You should see all I did for Ben 10 ;) ). I hope you like all the hard work I put into it. ^_^<3<3<3

I used this pattern from Juniper and Oakes (which is free by the way)

approx 41.5" / 105cm square blanket, corner to corner style

yarn is sirdar stories DK weight 40/60 acrylic/cotton mix in 826 gin fizz, 827 glow sticks, 828 golden hour, 829 mimosas and 836 invite.

pattern is from my brain - corner to corner style with seed stitch edging (this is an ENTIRE pain for the increase/decreases fyi and getting the tension to match the centre is also hard).

the coloured stripes alternate a textured pattern (seed or garter) with a central stockinette with eyelets, there are extra stockinette sections at the first and last corners to provide visual balance. The first and third stripes match, as do the second and fourth. If you check the earlier pictures you'll see I originally intended 5 stripes which would have meant the stripes mirrored round the centre and I'd have picked a third eyelet pattern for the central stripe.

the real trick is knowing WHEN to change colours so the stripes look good, if you fuck up and change when it makes logical sense, then it won't be visually consistent - you can see that on the test one i made for blocking that i just threw together months later - a lot of the colour changes should happen on the wrong side instead.
