Crested Saguaro

Cristate or “crested” saguaros form when the cells in the growing stem begin to divide outward, rather than in the cir- cular pattern of a normal cactus. This is an unusual mutation which results in the growth of a large fan-shaped crest at the growing tip of a saguaro's main stem or arms.

This is the same cactus, taken from different sides. Cristate are unusual, but this one is especially unusual because there are limbs growing from the Cristate top.

While hiking on the Sutherland Trail in Catalina State Park, we spotted this most unusual cristate (or crested) saguaro not far from the trail. Most cristate saguaros have a mutation that forms at the top of the cactus, giving it a crown appearance. It's been a year since he came into our home.

The roots haven't come out yet, so the leaves were turning red.

I'm green now because I'm already on boost.

It's already May and I'm getting leaf burn!😱😱

It's the season to let them grow comfortably, but some of the succulents were steamy...💦
