Albums of 2023 part 2
And so, on from part 1, we continue. This is more dreamy synth-dub that sits perfectly next to the Harrow album: Richard Norris is another artist with an extraordinarily long and illustrious career but who also has never lost the exploratory urge and total delight in sonic finesse.
Honestly Uruguayan-in-Ireland Lila Tirando a Violeta is right up there with the very best of the "deconstructed club" generation - dark, gothic, complex, VERY WEIRD - and this collab with Berliner Sin Maldita is up there with her best. It's really, REALLY intense!
Just impossibly beautiful elegies from ambient harpist Mary Lattimore which builds towards the final track collaboration with Slowdive's Rachel Goswell that is so lovely it will single handedly bring back swooning as a popular pastime.
Officially an EP but there's enough here to cement Nia Archives's place as a heavyweight - add "Off Wiv Ya Headz" and that Jorja Smith remix, and she's had a humdinger of a 2023....
Saw some discourse suggesting that Burna Boy is resting on his laurels here, but I don't hear it. Maybe it's the fact that the cover looks dashed-off? But musically, this bangs: it expertly joins so many dots but keeps his voice and personality right at the heart of it.
I mean come on there was no way a collab between Earl Sweatshirt and The Alchemist was going to be anything but good, right? Just purest essence of deep and dreamy stoner hip hop. Yet another small (27min) but beautifully formed album - definitely a trend there.
Feels kind of (literally) sacrilegious to say I prefer Cleo Sol's more personal, less scriptural records (e.g. Rose in the Dark) - and this is, top to bottom, a gospel album - but the conviction to her performance and the whole realisation of it here is still really magical.
From Coventry via Skopje, man like NOT_MDK's first album in 23 years, and he's zooming into the deep flows that join grime and dubstep into the longer, deeper electronic funk continuum... These tracks are so crisp and crunchy!
She's from Turkey but Ahu's been plugged into the London Plastic People / NTS / etc scene for years - file this with Yazmin Lacey and similar LDN soul-jazz, also it's very Boho and vibesy and incensey, definitely one to light your best candles for.
Can't remember who put me on to this, possibly Radio 3? Anyway if cold wet misty Scottish hillsides are your jam Claire M Singer has you covered - these slower-than-slowly unfolding organ-led pieces practically smell of wet moss, and are extremely beautiful.
He's lent vocals to a who's who of electronic music, but it turns out Paul St Hilaire's own studio craft is the equal of just about any of them - this is just a stunning, ocean-deep album of dub abstraction and subtly potent lyricism.
Icelander Eva Jóhannsdóttir aka EVA808 has already made a name in the dubstep/grime world but this is her really spreading her creative wings. Mad psychedelia, elemental abstraction, movie-theme composition - there's not much she can't do. Big things beckon!
There's still SO much to say about amapiano, and so much incredible UK, SA and wider world stuff last year (this isn't even the only great DJ Maphorisa album - he had THREE out in 2023, including a mini album with Shino Kikai and a 25-track one with fellow originator Kabza De Small!!). Suffice to say this has gorgeous songs, primal grooves, endlessly sophisticated mixdowns and bass that'll take your breath away.
Just gonna link to my review for this one (it's got the music embedded) - but TL;DR Darren J Cunningham aka Actress is the holy prophet of the era of enshittification, yet for all that his music is constantly "off" and made for a world that is "off", he alchemises it into real gold.
Yeah I'm going to be THAT space-jazz hipster and say this is the record I wish Andre3000 (who is on it, and Carlos Niño co-produced his album) had made. It's just a more lavish, free, FUN way to cavort with the five-dimensional fractal machine elves.
Zoning in on the platonic breakbeat mathematics that underly Jersey / B'more club Chicago hip house, UK rave, trip hop etc, Bored Lord could seem arch or retro if her beats weren't so gloriously functional and bumping.
Fed up of generic records? You will never EVER find another one that sounds like IFS MA. Polish abstract slightly Autechre-y footwork / drum'n'bass with Japanese rapper MA sounding like a cyborg beat poet Taliban Trim and I.... 🤯
Every man jack and their dog are doing high bpm retro rave lately but you can trust Meemo Comma to put a fresh and uneasy twist on it. These tracks will get you proper buzzing up loud! I got to DJ for her live performance of this at Spiritland earlier in the year, hearing them on that system was a real treat.
You get a twofer with this one. Phil Kieran's ode to Belfast is gorgeous in studio form here, but he also recorded and released a version with the Ulster Orchestra that single handedly revivifies the idea of electronic music done classical style!
Two true underground troupers teaming up here - Jordan GCZ from Juju & Jordash and David "Move D" Moufang with some otherworldly good-dream ambient, deep house and space-soul jams heavy on the Fender Rhodes, fuzzy reverberation and sensually sweeping portamento.
My musical safe place for so much of this year. Brooklyn "electronic jam band" Purelink somehow burrowed into electronic music history and found the softest, happiest, warmest fur lined chamber and then invited us in. I cannot emphasise enough how LOVELY this record is.
More modular synth grooves from E Ruscha aka Secret Circuits, but no over-indulgence here and the grooves REALLY DO GROOVE. Trippy as a weasel circus and twice as funky.
Talking of trippy, here's Optimo Music's second acid-drenched entry, from the man formerly known as TB Arthur and the mighty Magda trading as Blotter Trax, it's a kind of parallel universe early 80s alt disco where everything gurgles and melts.
More from South Africa - King Mzaiza Sound via the reliably tough Parisian PSSNGR label - not 100% sure what you'd call this though it definitely has some gqom sonics, some trap drums, and some strident rap vocals... It's HARD AS NAILS is what it is.
EVEN HARDER - Nyege Nyege brought us a sampler of this (and I don't use mental health language lightly) FUCKING MENTAL shrieking, raging, solvent-huffing sound from São Paulo stewarded by the young DJ K, and it's extremely funky and scarily thrilling.
OK there we go, part three is here.....

I get asked a lot about whether I wish I had been born in the United States and wish I were American instead of British. It usually surprises people when I respond saying that, no, I don't wish I were American, I don't resent growing up in the UK, and that I don't even think about becoming an American citizen one day. For someone who makes it a known part of her identity how much she wants to relocate to the United States, this is apparently quite a shocking opinion.
The United States and the United Kingdom are two measurably different countries. The gargantuan younger sister of the two is loud and boisterous; she is ambitious and annoying; she breaks the rules and feels not one shred of remorse; she befriends the misfits and invites in only those who have the gall to believe they can change the world - that they, an individual, are fundamentally special. The older sister is poised and proper, at least on the exterior as as she pretends nothing has changed; she's classically beautiful and frames all of her achievements on the dedicated wall of her house; she demands the correct steps be followed, and that reverence is earned only once you've taken them. She'd lose gracefully before winning scrappily, and her distaste for the delusional palpitates through her constituents. To her Frankenstein, the USA is the monster she doesn't quite want to claim, yet remains close enough that she can reap the rewards of the dirty work she doesn't want on her hands.
Either exist as quite the character in their own right. The free market republic vs the historic monarchy, power manufactured vs power inherited, the capital of new money vs the capital of old. But for all their differences, the combination of the two embosses the faces of a far more valuable coin. Crossing the Atlantic to merge one's life experience and culture with that of the other country is like creating metal alloy, with a resulting strength greater than either of the originals. The feeling of truly belonging to both societies is better than leaving one for the other, or never leaving one at all.
The evolution of my accent and dialect represent my straddling of these two cultures well: the inside jokes one shares with members of a culture can only be joined in with if one speaks the relevant language. The disdain amongst Europeans when I say 'Fahrenheit', 'soccer' or 'pounds' leans up against the confusion of Americans when I talk about 'coriander', 'crisps' and 'chemists', like a keystone bridge perfectly balancing my belonging between the two. My tour guide knowledge of Los Angeles lies dormant when I live life in London, and my expectation of one-a-minute public transport and Georgian terrace shopping streets sits idle when I am in California. While my Twitter page says I am based in 'LDN/LA', online acquaintances frequently ask me which city I actually live in.
If I were to reject my British heritage, I would be turning my back on the English countryside that formed the backdrop of my childhood; I'd be ignoring the camping trips and surfing holidays; the 800-year-old thatched cottage I grew up in and the narrow lanes through adjacent meadows that led us there. There'd be no grammar school education, no vacations to mainland Europe, no self-funded weekends in London; my globally prestigious degree would have been ten times as expensive on a ten times uglier campus, and my epilepsy diagnosis would have bankrupted me out of my dreams; my cultural heritage in the arts and sciences would be microscopically as impressive, losing figures as Isaac Newton, James Clerk Maxwell, Charles Darwin, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Christopher Nolan, George Orwell, William Shakespeare, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, John Lennon, Alexander Flemming, Alan Turing, Emmeline Pankhurst, JRR Tolkien as my forefathers. The landscape of London would be nothing but a tourist attraction to be romanticised from afar, rather than a place with which I share a personal connection, despite its lifetime beginning thousands of years before my own.
The USA is a universe the rest of the world grows up with: it is the set of a TV show, and its people are the characters. A British child can tell you about yellow schoolbuses and prom and downtown. So the idea of craving an existence wholly as an American is like craving being the default background noise. It's wishing you could remove your own cultural intricacies to have a life you watched on TV. Personally, I find it more appealing to fuse my life as a foreigner with my life I have chosen in America. To combine the flavours of both homes and live in the sunbeams of each. I want to possess membership to both clubs as someone who loves my chosen family just as much as the one I was born into.
Because the beauty of America isn't shown on the TV shows I saw as a kid. But it is more obvious to me as someone who natively appreciates the beauties of Europe. America's beauty isn't in its ancient architecture or how its Renaissance changed art forever. It's not in its 16th Century playwrites nor its 17th Century scientific breakthroughs. Its millennia-old institutions aren't global landmarks and its monarchy does not possess jewels displayed proudly in guarded towers. America has none of this. Its beauty is in the history it built for itself. It's in its belief in the power of the individual and the consequence of ambition and tenacity. It's how it sees an opportunity for glory, success and excellence and strives for it. How it creates unignorable craters in global culture. Its race to the moon contingent on its sleepless nights and deadset goals. Its two-pronged monument taller than any other on Earth, forcibly poking at the heavens as it raises its secular head and screams that greatness is not only for the gods. Its embrace of change - both good and bad - characteristic of its aversion to complacency. America didn't build the world, but it took the one it was given and refused to let only the kings and queens have a say in its running. It welcomed both explosive good and undeniable evil into the world as it has trial-and-errored its way to the top. And hiding neither behind the guise of centuries old establishments, it holds its hand to the next layman and tells him he can do one better. As the concrete societal standards in the UK ask you, 'What makes you think it can be you?', the US asks, 'Well, why can't it be?'
Both countries bear the responsibility for untold horrors across their histories, some still ongoing. The idealised versions of each land's ethos, in reality, is contaminated with injustice. And while the manmade landscape in Britain is strikingly beautiful, in America you'll find the opposite. But for every plain field or uninspiring environment in the UK, there is a spectacular natural wonder on US soil.
Residents of both countries feel the negative effects of the ways of life in each. The downsides of the American dream and free market society posture up against the cultural rigidity of the United Kingdom, and its subsurface classism working against any attempt of social mobility. But the sparkle of the wonders each country created still glistens excellently when held under a light.
To me, being a part of both worlds is a dream. My British past and my American future. My combination of these lands of inspiration - the way I can choose for my life to be touched by two places who have irreversibly touched all of human history. The intricacies of their societies and the stories of their people, whose struggles and dreams are just as much potential precursors to greatness as my own. Abandoning one for the other just makes me a flavour of person already tasted; it throws away the dimensions that have imbued me, that pave the unique steps to my own apotheosis. I cannot chase after a past I never had, but I can sculpt a future how I like with the one that I did. And as a result, I get to live a life enriched by two homes, two peoples, two worlds. In what universe would I ever choose to untangle that?

🍔 Review № 441 ━ 📍 Nanny Bill’s ★★★☆☆ • Vinegar Yard is one of many food markets in London, and they’re located just by the London Bridge train station. Food markets such as this one are often built in old barracks, where small vendors assemble to serve food and drink with a bit of shopping on a small area. And Vinegar Yard is of course no exception, and the reason for our visit to the other side of the Themes was the small burger joint Nanny Bill’s, who have several locations in the English capital. • We ordered a The Dalston Dip for 9.5 GBP (13 USD) plus three Mac ‘n Cheese croquettes for 6 GBP (8 USD). The hamburger had two beef patties, mustard glaze, American cheese, caramelised onions, gherkin relish and burger sauce in a seeded brioche bun, and came with a pot of gravy that could either be poured over the burger or be used as a dipping sauce. The burger itself gave a strong first impression, seeing as the patties had a great crust. The bun was a bit squashed, but was lightly toasted and felt soft and fluffy. But flavourwise it didn’t live up to our expectation, mainly due to the compact and pretty dry beef patties. This was remedied somewhat when we dipped it in the gravy, but it wasn’t enough. And both the gravy and the burger were undersalted as well. Everything else was alright, but nothing really stood out. the warm and crisp croquettes were a nice treat though, and came served with a spicy tomato dip and some grated parmesan cheese. • We really enjoy a good food market, conditions just weren’t perfect this time around. And the ordering process left a lot to be desired as well. We’re hoping that these problems have been solved next time around. ━ @nannybills #burger #burgers #burgertime #burgerporn #burgerdudes #burgerlovers #food #foodie #hamburger #hamburgare #london #londonburgers #ldn #ldnburgers #🍔 #🍟 #🇬🇧 (at Nanny Bill’s) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJnUiv2Fh22/?igshid=g3rz1d6v2hgw

Notable lyrics: ‘You’ve given me the thrill of a lifetime / And made me believe you’ve got more thrills to spare’
Destiny’s Child ft. Da Brat — Survivor
youtube
Sure, you’ve had more TC and vac scheme rejections than you’ve had hours of sleep during law school. But if Queen B can call herself a survivor, so can you.
Notable lyrics: ‘Thought that I would fail without you / But I’m on top’
Drake — Started From The Bottom
youtube
Any time you start doubting yourself, be like Drake and remember how far you’ve come: you probably used to think that judges in England and Wales used gavels. Cringe.
Notable lyrics: ‘I done kept it real from the jump / Living at my mama house we’d argue every month’

The shark nebula LDN 1235 You may need to raise the brightness if viewing on your phone 2hours and 18min total integration. Bortle 1, Marathon sky park. Marathon, Tx Luminance 6x3min Red 11x5min Green 7x5min Blue 6x5min Gain 76 Sensor temp -10c This was my fail of my marathon trip... Well maybe a kinda fail. Most astrophotographers aren't strangers to failures and technical difficulties. We learn from them and move on. Mistakes have been what drives me to get better and to stay positive and patient in life and in the hobby. On the first night the northern part of the sky had some patches of haze that took out that whole sessions worth of setting up and imaging. The second night as I slept the mount tracked it's way into colliding with my guidescopes USB cable into the tripod leg resulting in a failed meridian flip. The last night I was out, that said cable caused problems in guiding and wasn't able to keep most of the frames. I didn't know about the cable until after I began packing to leave. Not everything always works out when you plan it but it's just something patience has taught me to be happy I enjoyed my stay there and get a few good images and awesome memories out of it. Besides I'll be coming back hopefully twice a year, so I'll be adding more data to this next year for you all to see. I am grateful to know the quality of sky there as I can't wait to come back! Gear and software used: Explore scientific ed80 Apo triplet, zwo asi1600mm, zwo efw8 using zwo lrgb, zwo oag using asi290mm mini, stellardrive heq5 mount, qhy polemaster, astrotech .8x flattener/reducer Stellarium, phd2, sgpro, eqmod, pixinsight, light room I am happy to share a possible failure yet a long wait of a work in progress with you all. I can't wait to truly finish it next year and bring more depth and clean/crisp details to you all. This is the last astrophoto from my adventure out to Marathon, Tx in big bend country. Thank you for looking and always keep your head up to the stars https://www.instagram.com/p/B2cZ13ZHQ9w/?igshid=19axi5q8fpm07

06.03 LDN 14022019
This is far too early and has been written because I can't sleep. This also means it's only been seen by me, so I'm sure is full of mistakes - I will rectify as I see/find them!
It's rhink, it's pretty pointless and as usual I am going to post it anyway. Sorry.
For all who have been putting up with me recently ( @fanbabble and @rhinkyfan in particular) much love to all.
It's early.
London.
14th February, 2019.
It's still not quite light; the skies a cold, steely grey, the breath of the early morning commuters puffing white and ethereal as they hurry to Tube stations and catch buses to begin another day.
He has a bad case of jet lag. He stares out of the hotel window, watching the sky and the scurrying below and presses his forehead against the glass and then he jumps slightly at the icy coldness, pulling at the too short and too small hotel robe to try and close it higher round his neck.
Hotel rooms sometimes made him feel even more of a giant than he was, like some lumbering oaf with feet hanging over the end of the bed and robes with sleeves to his elbows and the length hitting him somewhere above the knee. So flattering, he snorts in a disgustedly amused manner. 'You're so funny, Rhett' he thinks and then rolls his eyes at himself. So funny and so damned jet lagged.
He looks out of the window again and watches the city still waking, traffic and people increasing steadily. A couple outside the Tube station catch his eye - the are obviously going to work, but it seems they were saying goodbye for the day and about to part. He wonders what their story is - Married? Lovers? Even maybe aone night stand morning after goodbye deal? He watches as they embrace and then kiss; tenderly, sweetly. Lovingly comfortable, breaking the kiss and parting, but holding hands until the very last second when they have to part. One of them takes the steps down into the Tube and the other waits until they are out of sight and then turns away to carry on the day, smiling fondly it seems 'Lovers and/or married' he thinks. He watches and smiles too, then impulsively breathes on the window, his warm breath fogging the glass and draws a heart over the place where they'd stood. Love is good.
He is about to wipe it away with his stunted robe sleeve when he hears a soft, sleep gravelled voice from the direction of the bed.
'Hey you... did you sleep at all? You look ridiculous in that robe man, like you grew all suddenly, like you should be green and angry '
He turns to face the voice, to see two bright blue eyes looking at him, dark silversparked hair every which way and all the while seemingly burrowing deeper into a huge bedding cocoon. The fond smile he wears blossoms further at the sight.
'You wouldn't like me when I'm angry...'
A giggle drifts up from the nest.
'You want to come and rage on me, Hulk boy?'
He walks slowly and stands next to the bed, looking down at the gorgeous, tanned and warm man wrapped in crisp white cotton grinning up at him and still giggling.
'Link. I've got jet lag from hell, I've not slept for nearly 24 hrs and we have a pretty full day ahead of us....'
The gorgeous creature of the bed holds out his hand.
'Shhhh, Rhett. It's ok.... You should have woke me earlier... c'mon. It's still pretty early, bro.' The bedding parts and the offered hand guides him to come down and join the bed creature in his lair. 'Let's just lay and talk maybe. Just be us. And if you sleep, that's all good. Whatever you want.'
A strong arm hugs his waist, he feels his robe open and fingers stroke and soothe the soft warmth of the skin underneath.
He exhales through his nose and, kissing his lover on the forehead, he closes his eyes and relaxes.
'Hey. Happy valentines, Rhett. I love you, you know?'
'Hey. Happy valentines, Link. Thank you for loving me. And I love you, too. So much. I'll show you later just how much.'
He hums contentedly as the amazing, adored Link wraps closer around him.
And as London continues to wake up on this grey cold morning he looks forward to later and drifts finally into a sweet, deep sleep.

So I heard the new instrumental or the SuperM song. It sounds awesome.
Still not buying the album, though, but there is potential of the songs being good (And I mean, LDN Noise are working on it and they have an amazing track record with kpop songs).
BUT! If SM don’t give us dance practices for all the songs then all of this SuperM stuff is worth nothing TBH. That many excellent dancers in one group better mean dance practices. I want crisp clean performance videos, I want shoes squeaking on the floor, I was individual member focus cams. THE DANCE TALENT SHOULD BE SHOWN OFF PROPERLY SM!

With a huge demand from its loyal following, Trade is ready to serve up a unique slice of clubbing as part of its long-awaited return to the capital. Tickets & More Info www.egglondon.co.uk Sankeys Rave 25 Feb Studio 338 is a venue like no other. Its evolution over the last decade has been a rollercoaster ride that has seen the team behind it put their hearts and souls - plus major investment - into every single detail. The venue has changed immeasurably since it first opened, from an unknown house and techno club to one that is now recognized on the world stage as a place to hear the best DJs on the planet. They play on a perfectly tuned and custom-built sound system with next-level lighting that makes for events like no other. Even in the face of adversities such as 2016’s devastating fire - which caused major damage and shut the venue for 18 months - and then the Covid-19 pandemic, Studio 338 has always battled back bigger and better than ever. It is now regularly voted as one of the Top 30 clubs in the world according to DJ Mag, but will not rest on its laurels. About the Event To dance in the iconic glass atrium that is The Terrace as cutting-edge light shows rain down and crisp electronic sounds rattle your ribs is one of dance music's most essential experiences. To party in The Garden under a hot summer sun with Ibiza's most celebrated brands and DJs is a rare opportunity to feel the magic of the White Isle in the heart of the capital. Losing yourself in the close-knit Loft space as new school stars leave their mark is how musical history is made. As Studio 338 enters its 10th year, the influential venue marks the momentous occasion in the only way it knows how: with more investment in new acoustic treatment and a mind-blowing new lighting rig The Grid as well as a full 12 months of mouth-watering events. Though now known around the world, Studio 338 has humble roots. It started as a niche house and techno club in Greenwich but over the last decade has become one of the scene’s foremost music venues. The same team has been in charge throughout that time and has developed the space into the unrivalled venue it is today: a first round of renovations introduced the now iconic main room aka the Terrace which is open day and night year round and along the way has its old plastic roof replaced with a state of the art sound proof glass atrium with mezzanines around the dance floor. Next, a car park was converted into The Garden, an open-air space open during daytime all summer long and The Loft is an upstairs space that has provided cosy and intimate backroom vibes since day one. The world stage with the best of the best World renowned brands soon started to call Studio 338 home and put on some of their biggest ever London shows: Cocoon, Sankeys, Elrow, Solid Grooves, Abode, Space Ibiza and in house brand Release are now all synonymous with the venue which offers an electrifying musical experience and broad array of genres which truly put it on the world stage with the best of the best. The start of the year has seen the venue invest further in its legendary and custom fit flagship VOID acoustics sound systemby installing hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of acoustic treatment to the Terrace in order to create a truer listening environment. Upon completion for the 10th anniversary re-launch it will truly be one of the best places in the country to enjoy music. The 10th year at Studio 338 is about moving everything up to a whole new level. And really set a new bar for nightclubs. The program will see old favourites at centre stage, parties which have called Studio 338 home since the very beginning such as Space and Sankeys. 🍔 Updated review ━ 📍 Black Bear Burger ★★★★☆ • Black Bear Burger started out as in a small stall selling weekend burgers in London, but quickly became popular with several notable social media and tv appearances. Nowadays they can be found in their Brixton Village restaurant and in the popup venue Boxpark in Shoreditch. • We first reviewed them back in 2017 when we tried their burgers at the burger festival National Burger Day, but this time we were finally able to visit their Boxpark location. We ordered a double Black Bear for 10.50 GBP (14.50 USD) with two dry-aged beef patties, cheese, bacon, onion jam and garlic mayo in a sesame bun. • We immediately noticed how beautiful our burger was. It looked really tasty and juicy, and the golden sesame bun really raised our hopes up. That’s why we felt a bit confused when we started eating our burger. Sure, the patties had a deep beef flavour and the bacon was crisp, but there was a severe lack of salt in our burger, which stopped it from reaching its true potential. Thankfully the bun was soft and fluffy, and could easily handle both the garlic mayo and onion jam that complimented each other perfectly. However, they had only been placed in the middle of the burger, and we could have preferred it if they’d spread it across the entire hamburger. • Black Bear Burger serve a really tasty burger, and with some more seasoning and better composition they could be one of London’s greats. But just like last time there’s a few things that’s keeping them back. ━ @black_bear_burger #burger #burgers #burgertime #burgerporn #burgerdudes #burgerlovers #food #foodie #hamburger #hamburgare #london #londonburgers #ldn #ldnburgers #🍔 #🍟 #🇬🇧 (at Black Bear Burger) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKnnbv8FdZj/?igshid=cyxd1hm6mj7y
