like. reid coming extremely close to needing to be dragged away from nathan?
Tumblr media
both garcia and reid's expressions here? reid, who cares for and identifies with nathan, garcia, who has (i believe) never seen a dead body* in person? (also, you can't see it here because it's a still image, but reid's breath is hitching here and he looks close to hyperventilating)
*i know nathan is not dead here, nor does he die at all—the point im making is that having never seen a dead body in person before would make you more unprepared for seeing the aftermath of an unsuccessful suicide attempt than someone who has
Tumblr media
reid makes no movement to clean the blood off his hands until gideon is right in front of him. he just stands there and stares like hes dissociating until gideon comes up and, in my opinion, sort of startles him into acting.
and gideon putting an arm around reid and taking him away from the scene while morgan does the same to garcia. hhhh.
this is the most emotional we see reid get up to this point. he's yelling while he's trying to keep nathan arrive, enough to strain his voice. i dont think hes so much as raised his voice at all up to this point.
i wonder how long he washed his hands for before he deemed himself "clean".

Criminal Minds s02e11 Sex, Birth, Death review - or more aptly named, what the fuck have prostitutes ever done to that asshole, please someone stop people from doing these awful things.
Episode 11 – Sex, Birth, Death
Hey everyone! So let’s see, the name of this episode is seriously just cut and dry and I really don’t like what it suggests. But you know what? I’m not being judgy, let’s see what it brings.
Let’s see what happens.
Cool, we’re in DC this time. Wait. We’re dealing with hookers again. Okay. Awesome.
They’re always interesting to me.
Someone is writing fiction about them? Erotica? What’s going on?
Oh shit! Someone just tortured a prostitute. Damn.
Why did he cut her hair?
Aww, Reid is using the subway. So cute.
So he’s talking to a mini him. That’s cute.
Something is going on with this kid. He looks disturbed beyond belief. Did he just suggest a new case for the BAU? Damn.
Shit. Damn!
T.S. Eliot: “Between the idea and the reality, between the motion and the act, falls the shadow.” Whoa. That is beyond deep. And I love that quote!
Ok. So that kid looks disturbed. And I just assumed that that was a butcher throwing off animal parts, but then I saw the body lying there, and oh my god those were human entrails and body parts and I’m eating right now and I feel like barfing.
So everyone knows about the prostitutes, they are killed during the early mornings, and nobody bats an eye cuz secretly they think it’s cleaning up the street yikes.
Good on you, Emily for talking to them.
“The more important they think they are, the quicker they accidentally finish up with us. It’s weird like that.” “No, that’s pretty much universal.” Lol, I love you, Emily, and Derek’s face like – dude, there’s something in what you’re saying.
So the girl is only nineteen? Damn. That’s absolutely devastating.
Hold up. The Senator just dropped in to see Hotchner, to tell him that if he catches the guy to not publish the case in the papers, and if he won’t comply she’ll take him off the case? Is she insane? What the fuck is going on here?
So she’s trying to protect her name and the bill she introduced? Oh god.
Wait. She knows Emily? Ruh-roh. The clogs in Hotchner’s mind are working, and not in the right direction. Because Emily is too driven and pure to be petty enough to call in a congresswoman to veto a case.
“This is impossible.” Says you.” “There’s nothing in the juvenile offender records.” “So you think like a high school kid.” “I was 12, and I hadn’t been through puberty when I was in high school.” Oh Reid, I love you, I really do.
“Ok, reset. I think like a high school student. You think like a profiler. He said he was a junior, right? The first rule of the teen years, when talking to an authority figure, always lie and say you’re older. He’s probably a sophomore.” Oh, Penelope, I love you so much.
So he went to private school.
Bam. Nathan Harris. Baboom!
Oh crap, both Gideon and Morgan join Reid in going there? Damn.
Wait, he writes erotica? Is he the guy killing the prostitutes? Damn.
He wanted them to find him?
Wait. He writes about his fantasies, he wants to kill prostitutes, but he doesn’t actually do it? He actually saw the bodies? Yikes.
So his dad died when he was 9, and his mom is always working, and Nathan is left to his own devices? Yikes.
So he doesn’t want to hook up he wants to kill? Oh my god.
So his fantasy is to actually kill them as soon as they’re about to mount him? Oh my god, the poor thing.
He has to promise Nathan to tell him what the psych eval says? Oh my god.
I just fell in love even more with Penelope, she just kissed her fingers and pressed it to Reid’s forehead, someone give me tissues.
So he carved HELP into the body of the prostitute he killed. Oh my god.
Something is up with Hotch. He seems unnaturally over-driven.
Whoa. She’s looking for her friend, calls her, here’s the phone, and fuck! She’s dead! Damn.
Failure carved into Little Holly’s body. Oh god.
Didn’t she tell Emily she was 19? Oh god, she even lied about that. She was actually 16. Damn.
So he thinks about killing women. He was sad, and he killed a bird, and it made him feel better? Oh my god, you poor doodlebug. You are sick, dude.
So he got off on seeing a female naked cadaver? Oh god. Oh god, he’s just sick. He gets off on killing, blood and all that stuff. Oh my god.
I’m with Gideon, he needs to be in a hospital. Fuck.
Okay, I can get why the mom won’t want to put her son in the hospital, but come on! It’s for his own good, if you really want to protect him as much as you profess, then just let him be hospitalized.
Oh poor Emily, she’s being questioned on every twist and turn just because she knew the congresswoman? Oh honey.
You go, Emily! I love you so much. She’s trying to make her own way, despite her parents, and she’s even fighting against it, and I love her so much.
So her son is missing, she’s seen those sick things he’s done to the women in playboy magazines, and she’s not out looking for him, but sends the FBI instead? What’s wrong with her?
Oh, Reid told her? Come on. Seriously, Reid thinks that because Nathan sympathizes with him about being misunderstood by society then it’s his responsibility.
Hahahaha, maybe he tied the knot in his tie a little too tight again. Morgan, why you be digging on Hotch like that? Come on, baby.
Frack. Another body.
The found Nathan in a church, where he claims he’s been for the past four hours, it’s seriouslyi disturbing.
That kid is weird. He wants Reid to cuff him? What the fuck?
So Nathan didn’t kill that last woman. Okay. But he’s still being detained for his own good. That poor thing.
So let me get this straight, the killer is part of the party who is trying to clean the streets of prostitutes, so he thinks that by killing them he’s helping them, but he’s still pissed at the congresswoman for not completely taking over the issue and sees it as a failure so he lashes out and kills them? Damn.
“Ok, reality. What you’re looking for – needle. This –” the multitude of data rushing on the screen “– haystack.” I love you, Penelope.
Bam. The congresswoman is pissed.
Wait what. He’s actually asking her to meet with the prostitutes? That’s amazing.
Decency Watch. Ronald Weems. Ew. Sounds awful.
Oh god, that poor, poor woman. If I were married to a guy like that, I’d have filed for a divorce the instant he started treating my like that. Or confronted him, if he did osmethign awful, then I’d have filed. Damn.
Good. Good. They gave them whistles in case they saw the guy. At least they’re not completely stupid, my team of superheroes.
Oh shit! That girl who was friends with Little Holly totally maced the dude, I love her!
Aww, they let Nathan go! Cutie. But still sick.
T.S. Eliot: “Between the desire and the spasm, between the potency and the existence, between the essence and the descent, falls the shadow. This is the way the world ends.” Oh my god, that is pure poetry and I love it. I mean, I know it’s awful, but it’s beautiful.
Wait, he spends his last night of ‘freedom’ hooking up with a prostitute? Oh no. Oh no, no, no, no, no, no. Baby boy, no.
Hahahahaha, Garcia wants to lift Reid’s spirits and taking him out. I love you Penelope, I love you, I love you, I love you.
Oh shit. No, Nathan, come on. You don’t have to do this.
Wait. Let me get this straight. Penelope owns a red convertible that she calls Esther? Oh my god, I just fell even more deeply in love with her. Holy fuck.
Oh shit. Oh shit. He just started stabbing himself? Oh my god, the poor guy. He tried eventually to save the girl. And Penelope and Spencer together trying to stabilize him is the most amazing thing ever. And watching frantic Spencer is amazing. And I can’t watch him cry, I can’t. because it’s just the saddest thing ever, watching something so pure break down. I can’t.
Please someone tell me they’re going home to make out.
Tumblr media
Okay, so this episode was just awful for me. It was so graphic, and it played on so many emotions I just had a hard time handling it. But it had some Penelope and Spencer friendship and it put Emily in a whole new awesome light, which was amazing.
I don’t have much to comment on this episode right now, I’m still groggy from sleeping in and I kind of let it all out during the review itself, so I will just leave it here, and …
See y’all next time <3

i really like this moment for its reminder that nathan is a child. anton yelchin was seventeen when this episode aired (not sure when it was filmed), and given that nathan is said to be a highschool sophomore, he's even younger. fifteen, maybe sixteen? (i was fifteen at the start of grade ten, sixteen when it ended, and i was almost always the oldest person in the class)
i think sometimes that's missed. not than nathan is very young, because that's an important part of the episode, but fifteen specifically. not so much a young man frightened by his own desires but a child. i couldnt get a screenshot of it because it's a very quick and subtle movement, but nathan's statement in the second screenshot is provoked by reid simply nodding in response to his first. he's so young that reid is the older authority figure he's looking up to and seeking reassurance from.
and judging by reid's expression after nathan leaves, he's just been reminded too.

HOLLY: (a sex worker): A lot of johns from the Hill stop by on the way to work. RHONDA (also a sex worker): We always say the same politicians yelling about cleaning up the Hill are the ones dropping fifty bucks with us before they make the speech. HOLLY: It's true. And the more important they think they are, the quicker they accidentally finish up with us. It's weird like that. EMILY: No, that's pretty much universal.
HELPPPP. emily my beloved.

on a real-world note: i havent seen most of the films and tv shows that anton yelchin was in, but it's apparent from what i have seen that he was an incredible actor, and by all accounts he seemed like a lovely person too. may peace be upon him.

I think part of the reason I feel so strongly about nathan harris' character is this line. heads up that this is going to be dark and personal:
i have never experienced homicidal thoughts, but I do have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, with Harm OCD as a major subtype, directed at both myself and others. They started while I was quite young, and often manifested as images of the aftermath of violence on people I cared about, with myself as the perpetrator. Like many people, I was at the time under the mistaken impression that Contamination OCD was the only kind (which I do also experience to a lesser extent). With no other obvious option, I came to the conclusion that I was a horrible person, that these were desires, and I had this exact thought process many times before understanding what was happening.
I don't think Nathan Harris has OCD (or, he might, but if he does, I believe it's coupled with genuine homicidal thoughts, as the thoughts he's having excite him just as much as they scare him), and I think the episode and character are more impactful if he doesn't have OCD. (if that makes sense? I would love to see more depictions of Harm OCD in media, but I don't think Nathan Harris is the character for it. Sympathetic representation of Harm OCD is very necessary, but the way to do that isn't by taking away sympathetic representation of people struggling with homicidal thoughts).
But I still relate to him on some level.

i Don't like this line and i think it's at odds with the rest of the episode, although i'm not 100% sure if i'm supposed to agree with gideon here. if im supposed to agree with him, i dislike this line, but if its supposed to be ambiguous or im supposed to disagree, i do think it's in character for gideon, who is probably a little jaded after the amount of time he's worked the job.
i dont know. i dont like the assertion that nathan, who is fifteen/sixteen and asking for help, is just doomed.
(although i'm curious if gideon changes his mind by the end of the episode. i'll keep an eye out for that)
