yourusername: one thing I was never taught why how hard this goodbye is. I've called this company home since I was 4 alongside the best girl in the whole world. I learned so much about dancing, myself, and life. Taking my final bow after Sleeping Beauty I couldn't help but shed a tear- I'm sad to say goodbye to my home and my ballet family, but I'm happy to dance on and make them proud. Thank you for helping me grow and spread my wings 🩵🩰✨

Tonight I debuted with a new dance company, my second one in all my 22 years of life. Thank you so much Charles for composing a piece that speaks what I cannot. This performance is dedicated to past me, her company, her mentors, her friends, and her supporters. I chose to keep the costuming simple, seeing as I don't feel as complete without them just yet.

I cannot wait to keep growing and dancing with every part of me.

No Capes! AU where Bruce and everyone else is an actor.

Famous Hollywood moguls Thomas and Martha would've rather died in real life than make Bruce a child actor so he didn't start till he was 24

It's an ongoing gag that Thomas always tweets "On my way to die again! As if you didn't know" with every Gray Ghost remake

The Waynes are always just. So chaotic

Bruce and Selina constantly bring stray cats on set; Bruce just hides them under his black shirt famously known as a void with no end.

Behind the Scenes cuts have images of this man pulling 10 cats from under there and the director is convinced he has a cryptid on set

They have to edit so much footage because Bruce always says "sorry" after "punching" someone. "Bruce, they have padding, they're fine!" "And no health Insurance. Do something about that."

Sometimes he forgets to take off the costume after filming. The record set for how many Subways he sent into a panic is infinite

That being said, Bruce's kids aren't afraid of him at all, and WILL run up to him everytime they visit to chant "dork! Dork! Dork!" While flocking around him. He cries from happiness

But he cries all the time, so it's hard to tell for what

The movie's soundtrack is just Bruce's middle school playlist, " They said they needed something rotten and terrible, like, -- poison for the ears. If you listen to it you get sick."

Bruce's biggest "diva moment" was refusing to give up the eyeliner and he still sends apology cards to the cast and crew for his " horrible behavior"

"He just kinda said no a bit loud and ran out of the studio while sobbing quietly."

Literally every villain on set is a sweetheart. Selina does her own make-up as well as Bruce's and Oz's and you can see Carmine lurking like a little gobling behind them just to scare her

There's this joke that none of Selina's streams ever go well because the crew is her curse. She's trying to talk about how to steal on set, meanwhile, Bruce next to her, "Did you know cats have no collarbone. Also, the electric chair was invented by a dentist."

You'd think everyone's favorite duo would be Bruce and Selina, and you wouldn't be wrong, but the public can't wait for Bruce and Carmine to have a press conference or interview together

Mostly because Carmine obviously dealt some shady cards in his past and Bruce is so clueless . " Have I ever tried coke...No, I like Pepsi." While Carmine is trying not to laugh behind him

Edward is just as bad. He's trying to tell the director that's not how bombs are made, and someone's head exploding wouldn't look like that, and Bruce is like :O Eddie, I didn't know you were a gamer

Edward is a menace on set and Bruce stays blind to it because he like him. There's rows of videos of Bruce stopping mid scene, going " Eddie," before jumping on the guy like the kitten he's NOT

Alfred still brings Bruce lunch and snacks and he throws down with Oz for no reason. He always brings the kids (read; they sneak in) and it's very clear they're not getting any shooting done that day

Dick, age 10, impatiently asks why Gray Ghost can't have a sidekick. In the last moments of the movie Dick runs in, improvises a scene with Bruce, and the fans love him too much not to include him after

You just leave Bruce alone when his babies are on set; Damian is strapped to his chest cause he's so small that everyone almost steps on him, Jason is giving the writers tip, Tim is taking pics of everyone, and Bruce smothers them with kisses constantly

Lǐyú 🐟

25 years old

Grew up poor, but a hard worker - was in the student council throughout highschool and captain of the debate team; bit of an overachiever

Earned a scholarship to university and became… an accountant

Always had dreams to be a marine biologist or illustrator, but life got in the way and one has to pay the bills

Had no passion for their chosen career, becoming a workaholic and reclusive, plus being piled with extra work due to to being the lowest in the work hierarchy

Started a webcomic series to relieve stress from the job and posted on a whim, unexpectedly got really popular!!!

One time got caught in the rain without an umbrella and ran into an open cafe

Met the the owner @maiden-of-the-waters Beike and worker @marcu-bug Yu, who took one look at their sad, soggy form and immediately (unofficially) adopted them into their cafe

Lǐyú cried (which they’re still embarassed about) from the simple kindness of strangers, and started frequenting the cafe more

With support from the others, quit their accounting job and started posting comics full time, even picking up shifts for the cafe

Noticed by game company, scouted and hired for character design/concept, illustration and storyboarding

Co-workers with @marcu-bug’s monkey (Tao), who works in a different department

Unexpectedly ran into @dunanana Birdie in the cafe, and fainted from shock; has always been a big fan of her music

Did get over their embarassing hero worship after getting to know Birdie, and the gang always teases them about their reaction to their first meeting

Met @szynkaaa Oz while working a shift in the cafe, casually doodled a lil star on her to-go cup based on the accessories on her bag

Becomes roommates with Birdie and Yu after their apartment got flooded

More social and passionate about life; it really was going great! Surrounded by awesome friends and loving their new career; seriously, what could more could they ask for?

That was when fate decided to throw a Monkey their way

Destined One/Yēzi 🥥

24 years old

Star of the martial arts world since he was a child, has won numerous competitions in various fields

Impressive enough to be scouted for minor movie roles but didn’t enjoy the spotlight. Transitioned to stuntwork

Elder monkey is his grandfather and runs a dojo - he joins as a teacher and regularly holds classes for all levels

(the kids all love him, he is their favourite teacher!! Don’t tell him he said this, but he likes teaching the kids too)

Going to inherit the dojo when his grandfather retires, but that seems to be a while yet…

In his youth he was a massive menace, challenging all the dojos/martial arts associations with his own lil’ gang

He’s totally mellowed out now that he’s older, but his friends keep teasing him about his ‘younger days’

ANYWAYS, because of his wild challenges in his youth, he became a local legend and set off a trend for the up-and-coming students of other dojos to start challenging HIM

His friends call him Fruit Punch. And somehow it SPREADS and others start calling him the legendary Fruit Punch

Gods he was so mortified he wore a mask to try and hide, but it just fueled the rumours even more

So he’s always being interrupted and challenged by all these flashy characters and gained a reputation for being a delinquent/vigilante

(since they’re disturbing public areas, Yēzi always drags them off to the police station after the fight)

Grumpy guy

Of course he is, always getting interrupted by a bunch of guys when he just wants a smoothie or shopping for groceries

Lǐyú did not understand the culture around fighting for the longest time and had some... misunderstandings about it. Had a long sit down with Yēzi to talk about it :)

i went into this book knowing nothing except that it appealed to me months ago when i requested the galley, and could not have imagined the ride i was in for!! in a way it's a very classic fantasy about seemingly insignificant people battling power and holding the fate of the world in their hands, but those bones are so spectacularly fleshed out with wonders and horrors, it's an absolute phantasmagoria. for me it brought back old favorites like Abarat and Labyrinth and a little bit of Steven Universe, and even older favorites like Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz, where you might encounter anything, and your assumptions are likely to be wrong.

i adored the two alternating protagonists, Pell and Kew, and the ways in which their transformational journeys paralleled and diverged from each other, and the ways in which they demonstrated how much a person can change and yet still be recognizable when they come home. there's something juicy and gendery in there, allegorically and literally in the text (the way gender works in this world is wicked cool), but it also rang broadly to me with truths about obligation, and taking responsibility, and persevering in the face of overwhelming opposing power. and honestly there were no characters i didn't like, even the ones i maybe wasn't supposed to like, and especially the ones with bodies so unusual i almost couldn't picture them.

and then there's the art!! so i read this as an e-galley, which did not have the illustrations in it, but when i saw the physical hardcover i was so DELIGHTED by the artwork. every chapter has a header that looks like it came out of a medieval bestiary or some other illuminated manuscript, finally giving me some visual references for what a hollowman looks like or what's going on with the Ladies' weird heads full of crenellations and eyes. i wish it was in color!! but it's delightful as it is.

i genuinely laughed and cried and almost skipped out on a social event i had promised to show up to in order to finish reading it, and the ending felt totally right and still took me by surprise!

try this if you: really dig when the visuals of a book push the limits of weirdness, love stories about journeys and self-discovery and trying to dismantle/escape oppressive systems, or are a fan of endings that leave questions.

3. Homesick

The storyline? Pops.

The artstyle?so good that I cried.

The characters and roles? Believe me when I tell u that it's perfect.

It's all set in a beauty fantasy setting with terrifying moments and a lot of suspense and thrill

It was so good I read everything over 1 night and woke up the next morning dead but satisfied

It's quite pleasing even for someone who doesn't like horror that much but is okay with gore and angst

Honestly can't wait till the next episode comes out

4.Morgana and Oz

One of the first webcomics I read which got me instantly hooked

It's currently one hiatus but whatever has been already posted has literally brought me to tears. Again it's fantasy and the characters are soo cute and complex

albedo:

-the oboe

-he’s smart as hell bro, i think he’d pick up a complex instrument for fun

-he practices the oboe during whatever little downtime he has in between (not a problem since he’s quick to pick it up)

-he learned alot of melodies and sweet songs to play for klee whenever she comes sees him

-he’s the chief alchemist, of course reed prices and maintenance aren’t a problem for him (klee accidentally set some reeds on fire one time)

amber:

-the drums!! specifically the tenor drums

-i feel like since she’s an archer, her arms and wrists can handle the chops of tenors

-she has stickers from klee, collei, and eula on the sides of her drums :’)

-collei’s stickers are usually just leaves from sumeru but shhh don’t ruin it for them

-one time, kaeya was holding her drums and dropped them on accident. she cried the rest of the day (they were unscathed but she side eyes her drums anytime kaeya is nearby)

-as a way of training his muscles, he LUGS it home every day to practice (his dads encourage him to do his best as they wear earplugs)

-sometimes he lays on his drum when he’s feeling tired

-whenever he breaks a bass drum, he and razor empty it out, climb in it, and have fischl roll them down a slope

-i can see him playing the bass clarinet

-doesnt have a lot of down time, but since he’s good with his fingers ( 🤺) he has good muscle memory

-accidentally left his reed on the mouthpiece and didn’t play for a couple weeks due to work. the next time he opened the case, he found mold growing.

-kaeya anonymously leaves new reeds (the expensive ones) for him at his doorstep. diluc thinks it’s either jean or lisa leaving him the reeds :’)

-she performs at the cats tail often to get people to stop drinking temporarily and focus on her

-anytime her dad tries talking to her while he’s drunk, she blasts her trumpet in his face and runs off

It is also really worn and loved; I might attempt to repair some of the pages with glue and brush. The Harper Collins/books of wonder reprint is the full color version. But to me this gift means so much to me. I cried twice over this. I'm so Glad Zoe is my friend.

Florida, politics, and why I cried watching Wicked today

So, I just got back from a performance of the musical Wicked today in Orlando. This was a show I was already quite familiar with, having seen it once before as a kid and having listened to the soundtrack dozens of times over the years. I have fond memories of belting "Defying Gravity" with my friends at sleepovers, or even acting out the entire script twice with one of them; I'd always be Elphaba, and my friend would always be Glinda. (My mom bought my sister and I the special-edition "Grimmerie" book, which included the full play script, interviews, and behind-the-scenes details.) Needless to say, Wicked is and has always been a nostalgic show for me, and that's what I expected when I went to see it today- familiar songs and characters, a heartwarming and oft-praised story about female friendship, and dazzling musical numbers that have since become iconic, almost to the point of cliche among theatre fans. If I was going to cry during Wicked, I thought, it would be solely because of this nostalgia. It turns out, I cried twice. Not just a teary eye or two, but full-on, ugly sobbing.

It turns out, Wicked is a very political show.

For as loud as Wicked is about its politics, surprisingly, that's not an element I see talked about much. Often times, when I see people talking about Wicked, it's usually the spectacle of "Defying Gravity" or the themes of friendship (and maybe even queer romance) between the two leads, or whether or not people who like this show are "real musical theatre fans" on account of how popular it is. And if you want to talk about those aspects of Wicked, go ahead; I'm not stopping you. But the themes of politics and activism motivate the entire plot, fuel the fluidity of "good" and "wicked" that is such a central theme of the show, and are responsible for all of the major character arcs. By the logic of Wicked, to be truly good is to be an activist, an advocate for the marginalized and to encourage others to do the same.

Whenever my sister and I would listen to Wicked's soundtrack as kids, we would usually skip over "Something Bad," a short but plot-important number that serves a number of functions. It wasn't as fun to sing along to as "Popular" or as energetic as "One Short Day," so we usually ended up not listening to it at all. "Something Bad" is sung by Doctor Dillamond, the history teacher at Shiz, a high-class academy in Oz which the main characters attend. Dillamond, an anthropomorphic goat, is the only animal teacher at Shiz, and while he cares for his students and his job, he is threatened with losing his position, both because he's physically losing his ability to speak, and because animals are being persecuted by Oz's human residents. "Something Bad" gives us this exposition, and demonstrates a show of solidarity between Dillamond and Elphaba, who is shunned and ridiculed by the other students due to her green skin. Dillamond also explains in a monologue that animal persecution has been going on for a long time in Oz (to which Glinda ignorantly states something along the lines of "why keep talking about the past instead of teaching us history?"), and that animals who lose their ability to speak do so because they have been made so afraid to that they forget how altogether.

Despite being a clear advocate for animal equality in Oz, Dillamond himself sometimes lapses into goat noises instead of speech, implying that this fear is getting to him as well. After all, his job is in a precarious position (he is later fired and forcibly removed from the classroom), he's the only animal teacher at the school, and the only person who takes him seriously is Elphaba, who herself is also a subject of ridicule. Even Dillamond's own classroom is no longer safe for him, as it has been vandalized with a message reading, "animals should be seen and not heard." And when Elphaba is made aware of what is happening to the animals, she sings the last line of "Something Bad"- "It couldn't happen here in Oz." And why should it happen in Oz? After all, Oz is a colorful, quirky place full of magic and silly expressions, and different kinds of people and creatures who seem to coexist. But it is happening in Oz, and Elphaba, as a victim of baseless discrimination, already knows that Oz is not the free-spirited, fantasy utopia it appears to be.

So, in case I haven't made it excruciatingly obvious, "Something Bad" took on an entirely new significance when I watched it performed today. Dillamond is an educator, specifically a history teacher, who attempts to teach his students about the injustices against people (or in his case, animals) like him that have persisted for a long time, and he recognizes that these problems are only building and getting worse. In short, animal discrimination in Wicked's Oz is systemic, and didn't come out of nowhere. Animals are not just being forced from respected and influential positions in society, but also being limited from speaking altogether, specifically through the usage of fear and suppression. After Dillamond is fired, a man in a stark outfit bringing to mind the aesthetics of Nazi Germany enters the classroom, holding a cage with a young Cowardly Lion inside. He's also there to teach about animal speech in Oz, except this time, he shows off the caged lion cub and explains that animals should be silenced from birth, because the ability to speak against their own oppression makes them a threat.

Living in Florida, this scene, along with "Something Bad," hit me like a ton of bricks. Over the past few years, in my own state, I have been seeing the rise in discrimination against POC and LGBT+ people, specifically by the state government to target schools and educators, particularly history teachers like Dillamond. Teaching history and its systemic injustices is seen as a threat to right-wing power, and as education is targeted, people grow afraid to advocate for their own rights and grow disillusioned with the prospect of fighting for them, similar to how the animals in Wicked forget how to speak altogether after keeping silent to survive for so long. Like the lion cub, young people especially are targeted, with the school system and trans healthcare for minors being restricted, as to discourage those who are young and societally marginalized from advocating for themselves. Even after Elphaba and Fiyero free the lion, he remains "cowardly," because he has likely been traumatized from a young age.

"It couldn't happen here in Oz" chillingly mirrored the sentiments I had been feeling when I saw footage of a neo-Nazi rally in 2022 about five minutes away from where I went to university, the list of banned books from schools, a governor who has been endangering lives and acting like a dictator, and yet won re-election by a large margin... it couldn't happen here in Florida, where I've lived all my life, and yet it has been happening for a long time, or else how would we get to this point in the first place? And for those who live outside of Florida and disdainfully act like what's happening here could never happen in their state or country, it could happen there too. It could happen anywhere, and the only way to resist it is to confront it.

The number that follows "Something Bad" is "Dancing Through Life," where Fiyero is introduced as a happy-go-lucky himbo prince, easily seducing the entire school (sans Elphaba) by sharing his philosophy with them- that "life is painless/for the brainless/why think so hard/when it's so soothing/dancing through life." The student body all goes along with this, but Elphaba can't "dance through life;" she's shunned and bullied by her peers for something she can't change. She studies magic as a means to escape her social situation, hoping to become exceptional and work with the Wizard to gain respect and admiration. Doctor Dillamond and the animals, as we saw from the previous scene, can't "dance through life;" their rights are being taken away and they struggle to survive. Nessa and Boq want to "dance through life" in their own ways, but are taken advantage of by Glinda and Fieyero. "Dancing through life" is a privilege that only those who don't have to think can afford, and of course, Glinda is swept into the idea immediately. Everyone else must work and think tirelessly to survive, and it's not until both Glinda and Fiyero recognize this that Elphaba softens towards them. The idea of "dancing through life" is indirectly brought up later, when the Wizard tries to persuade Elphaba to work with him, and suggests that after taking care of her sister all her life and being discriminated against, she deserves someone to take care of her, giving her this opportunity to "dance through life" if she assists him in oppressing the animals with her magic. Elphaba refuses, but the Wizard knows this idea appeals to her; after all, her striving to "make good" and be a powerful sorcerer stems from a need to be accepted.

After Elphaba and Glinda become friends, they go to the Emerald City, where Elphaba hopes to speak to the Wizard about the animals losing their ability to speak, still trusting this mysterious authority figure to have his citizens' best interests at heart ("if something bad is happening to the animals, we need to tell the Wizard; that's why we have a Wizard!"). However, when the Wizard tricks her into giving a monkey, Chistery, wings through a painful spell, Elphaba realizes that the Wizard and Madame Morrible (the Shiz headmistress and the Wizard's press secretary) have enslaved multiple monkeys. After Elphaba's spell gave them all wings, the Wizard and Morrible are planning to use them as spies to further oppress the animals. When she tries to protest, resulting in a magic outburst, the guards chase her and Glinda down, where they barricade themselves into a room and the sequence of "Defying Gravity" occurs. "Defying Gravity" is Wicked's showstopping central piece. It's spectacular, the number is climactic and beautiful, and it's a great ending to the first act. But at the beginning of the number, we see an interesting conflict between Glinda and Elphaba that highlights their political positions, shaped by their differing access to privilege. Glinda accuses Elphaba of "flying off the handle" (broomstick pun?) for becoming enraged at seeing the enslaved flying monkeys and how she was tricked into casting a spell that hurt them, and advises her to just apologize to the Wizard, as she does not have the empathy for the animals and understanding that Elphaba has. However, Elphaba no longer wants to work with him after seeing the injustices he and Morrible are responsible for- and it's not just that, she "can't want it anymore." It's "too late for second guesses, too late to go back to sleep," as she's now aware of what the Wizard is up to.

Her decision to "defy gravity" is not just literally to fly away on a broom and escape, but to become an activist. She's endured discrimination all her life, and previously, the only way to escape that was to work with the Wizard. But now, she can't work with the Wizard, so instead she must do something else. She has an immense magical power and a desire to do good, so in order to truly do good, she must accept herself and her own morals. However, because she is considered an outsider and a threat by the Wizard (who has no real power of his own), in order to do good, she must become the "witch"- unaccepted by society, but in control of her power and motivated to use it. This is further symbolized by the costume and props she accumulates during this scene; she finds a broom, which she uses to escape, and Glinda gives her a shawl in addition to the pointy hat she gave her earlier as a cruel joke at the school dance. Even after finding out why Glinda gave it to her, Elphaba still wears the hat, reclaiming it as part of her iconic Witch outfit. She is now recognizably the Wicked Witch of the West, and this is how she "defies gravity"- by deciding not to sacrifice her morals, accept herself, and embrace her power- which the Wizard and Morrible do not have. Glinda decides to join her, and although both characters' moral alignments seem to fluctuate throughout the show as "good" and "evil" are shown to not be binary concepts in Wicked, it's this solidarity that gives them power.

This is why I was crying during "Defying Gravity"- not because of the vocals and visuals, or even my nostalgia, but because of its political relevancy and statement on solidarity and activism. In this scene, Elphaba is shown to be more powerful than her oppressors, and attains this power through unapologetically embracing herself. She is hunted and feared, but she refuses to take part in the Wizard's regime. And because of this refusal and desire to advocate for the oppressed, she is good. These days, here in Florida, "defying gravity" seems impossible. I constantly hear people, both my peers and left-leaning state officials in the news, say that things are hopeless, the political situation will only get worse, and more people will inevitably be harmed by consequence. And yet, "Defying Gravity" offers hope, showing that there's always a way to fight back, even if it seems impossible. As a consequence for her resistance and acceptance of herself, Elphaba is scapegoated as the "wicked witch," but she isn't backing down or, as Glinda suggested, apologizing to the Wizard for standing by her morals. She's no longer seeking respect from the people who discriminated against her, but rather to ally herself with a worthier cause- helping others who are oppressed. She has a power all her own, and she intends to use it.

Following "Defying Gravity," the way Morrible spreads rumours about Elphaba really reminds me of how right-wing conspiracies and fearmongering spread today. Such rumours are baseless (for instance, the idea that Elphaba would melt if doused with water), but as the general population are afraid of her, they latch onto them because it gives them hope that she could be defeated. Despite tricking Elphaba into giving the monkeys wings, Morrible claims (in a scene that also relies on fascism-related imagery with her screaming at a podium) that Elphaba "mutilated the innocent monkeys," instantly bringing to mind for me how modern anti-trans rhetoric is spread. While obviously, the scenario differs in that trans people who seek healthcare do so willingly, trans healthcare, especially for minors, is often similarly mischaracterized by the right as "mutilation of innocent children," with children commonly used as a talking point since it is much more difficult for them to advocate for themselves in the adult world of politics, similarly to how the animals in Wicked are forced to forget how to speak. Furthermore, Morrible spreads rumours in the same way that real-life conspiracies are spread, by taking a small bit of believable truth (Elphaba gave the monkeys wings) and distorting it into something widely seen as morally wrong (Elphaba intended to cause harm to the monkeys).

A mob against Elphaba grows, fueled by morality-related concerns- "Wickedness must be punished/for good." Here, "for good" takes on a double meaning- both to mean "permanently," and that the mob believes themselves to be fighting for the concept of "good." (We see expressions using the word "good" in multiple ways used throughout the show- "goodness knows the wicked's lives are lonely," "I have been changed for good," etc.) The parallels to conservative morality crises are obvious; the mob has been misinformed about something they don't understand, fear has been spread among them because they feel that "goodness" is under attack, and due to this fear, they want to fight anything that's different. During the mob scene, we see the Tin Man (formerly Boq) and the Cowardly Lion, two characters Elphaba tried to save, but have turned against her due to receiving this misinformation, as all of Elphaba's attempts to "make good" have only seemed to backfire.

Glinda, now officially "Glinda the Good," is in a complex position where she wants to help Elphaba, but plays the role of a public figure in order to console the people of Oz. Like when she was at school, she is addicted to their admiration, even at the expense of her friend's safety. Despite her moral struggles, Glinda ultimately wants to stay in a position of privilege instead of resisting the system oppressing Elphaba and the animals- she becomes "Glinda the Good" for the same reason she suggests Elphaba apologize to the Wizard before "Defying Gravity"- to maintain her position within the status quo, even though she now knows how damaging it is. Fiyero, however, is now aware of the system he's been contributing to, and dedicates himself to helping Elphaba, and its because he cares that she falls in love with him.

I want to talk a lot about the Wizard, because he and his song "Wonderful" are the largest and most obvious critique of using oppression to maintain the status quo. He even says something along the lines of (paraphrased) "where I'm from, people are only able to unite if it's against a common enemy." Where is the Wizard from? Kansas. In America. "Wonderful" is all about how he maintains power, and is positively dripping with political satire, specifically in how manipulating the historical narrative is used to control people. ("Where I'm from, people believe all sorts of things that aren't true! We call it history.") According to the Wizard, "A man's called a traitor/or liberator/a rich man's a thief/or philanthropist/is one a crusader, or ruthless invader?/it's all in which the label that is able to persist./Then there's precious few at ease/with moral ambiguities/so we act as though they don't exist!" He tells Elphaba that "the most celebrated/are the rehabilitated," suggesting that if she becomes complicit, she will win fame and admiration. Elphaba initially agrees on the condition that the Wizard frees the monkeys, but discovers Doctor Dillamond has been captured for protesting for animal rights and is now unable to speak, causing her to free the monkeys herself and putting herself further at odds with the Wizard.

For the Wizard, history is presented as strictly black and white, "good" and "evil," in order to create an easily-digestible narrative that influences people's morality and image of historical figures and systems. The complications and humanity of history are ignored, in favor of telling a narrative that benefits the "wonderful" Wizard, which is why Dillamond, who challenges this narrative and is, once again, a history teacher, is targeted. The Wizard says that he aims to make people happy and give them what they want to hear, but not people like Elphaba, the animals, or other oppressed groups in Oz like the Munchkins. People, to the Wizard, are those at the top of the social hierarchy, who conform to his standard of acceptability. It's these people who he wants to comfort, by suppressing the narratives of others. Similarly, in Florida, "Critical Race Theory" has been mischaracterized and painted as a threat to white comfort. While CRT is not taught in grade school and is only taught in certain college classes, the Florida government portrays anything that teaches about systemic racism and injustice to be a threat to white security. Controlling the historical narrative, particularly in schools, is an attempt to secure power and prevent people from being educated on historical nuance, especially as this nuance becomes more and more publicly relevant. By presenting an uncomplicated narrative in which he is the hero and people don't have to confront their complicity, Wicked's Wizard is "wonderful," deified and respected by those whose ignorance leads them to want to persecute anyone different.

"No Good Deed" is an interesting number, because it's here that we see Elphaba's morality challenged. She has been trying to be "good" all her life, but every instance of her trying to help people leads her further and further into persecution. It's here that she begins to conform to society's view of her as the "wicked witch," and in a way, we see parallels to her and Doctor Dillamond being silenced. By becoming "wicked," Elphaba becomes what society expects from her, because "wicked witch" is the only role acceptable for her in Oz. She has an interesting line in this song- "was I really seeking good/or just seeking attention?/if that's all good deeds are when looked at with an ice-cold eye(...)/maybe that's the reason why/no good deed goes unpunished." This line shatters whatever illusion Elphaba had as to the binary of "good" and "evil," as she doubts the motivations behind her attempts at goodness. She confronts an uncomfortable dilemma about her activism, the possibility that it could have all been to raise her image in the eyes of the public and uplift only herself, making her complicit in the system she has been trying to fight against by looking for the appeasement of Oz's society, now attempting to satisfy their expectations by becoming the Witch. Personally, I think that while Elphaba's activism and desire to "do good" may have stemmed from a desire to uplift herself, much of the time, it put her at odds with society, especially when it comes to helping the animals. Elphaba is seeking good, but her idea of "good" challenges the social hierarchy, leading her to be antagonized.

The second time I cried watching Wicked was during "For Good." Elphaba is being hunted down by a mob, and Glinda, feeling truly guilty for her actions, comes to apologize. Elphaba feels that all her attempts of "making good" have been fruitless, but Glinda, remorseful and now wiser, is committed to helping realize Elphaba's visions. As Elphaba, in a demonized position, cannot realize the social change she seeks to accomplish, she gives the Grimmerie to Glinda, saying she'll have to learn to read it. Both friends confess that they have been "changed for good" due to the other's influence, "for good" having another double meaning here.

Everything Elphaba has strived for has seemed fruitless, but now with Glinda's help, she can finally accomplish her goals. Her activism may not have been able to sway the public's opinion, but it has been able to influence Glinda, a powerful public figure adored by Oz. Despite everything, being a friend to Glinda was enough to make a difference. Elphaba will never receive recognition for what she did, but her actions still made a positive change.

This is what got to me- the idea that being compassionate and a supportive friend still has the ability to influence people "for good." When I saw this being sung on stage, I was reminded of how, like Elphaba, I often felt "limited" in what I want to see accomplished, and can't do on my own. But also like Elphaba, I recognized that just by being a friend and committed to my morals, I have done my best to be encouraging to people who need it, provided a safe space for people seeking acceptance, challenged harmful systems through confronting them and having conversations, and ultimately have been changed myself for the better. What you do matters, even if it seems insignificant. You may never know how many lives you'll touch in your lifetime, how many people who you'll change by being compassionate, to what lengths your efforts will go. Just by being kind and accepting, you have power to challenge ignorance and hatred, and to improve people's lives. When Elphaba and Fiyero flee Oz at the end of Wicked, they'll never get to see Glinda's committal to truly "making good," and Elphaba is still considered a villain, but now with Glinda's help, her actions weren't in vain. And through learning to read the Grimmerie, Glinda rejects "dancing through life" and must take on self-education in order to be a true force for good. And when she does, Chistery, the flying monkey Elphaba saved, speaks to her. He doesn't say much, but this moment is still significant- with Glinda's committal to Elphaba's causes, animals no longer have to be afraid to speak in Oz.

The powerlessness I have felt, and still often feel, as everything gets worse and worse in Florida is discouraging. Making a positive social change in a place where, like in Wicked, education, historical truth, and marginalized people are all under attack feels impossible, and yet Wicked shows us that whatever you do, whatever I have done, to "make good" still matters. I may not be able to undo everything that's happening on my own, and even though I may be "limited," I'm not powerless.

While we might not be magical witches, none of us are powerless. We all have the ability to change for good, and to change others for good, even if we may not recognize it happening. Your actions do matter, and "making good" will always be worth it.

I'm a huge fan of the Story Trope, "Random Kid in A Magicial World" especially when it comes to the minds through Young Folks that are stuck in Another World that is rather Vibrant filled with Wonders. To start off with one of the Obscure Story cliches, here's my own personal Original Story about a Minor who finds themselves in a Strange World (inspired by L. Frank Baum's "Oz" series and even Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland"). Prepare yourselves for my ultime Strange World creation, "Colorland". Katherine Davis (often known as "Kat") is a Rather Insecure Girl whose Parents are divorced due to the fact that Mr. and Mrs. Davis decided to live on their own after a one fight they had which cause Katherine's Parents to split apart as Kat only had to live with her Mother in their own apartment. Despite her own Parents' Divorce, Katherine still loves them as her Parents are always there for her (no matter if they are together or not) as Katherine often visits her Father's apartment. Hitting at the Age of 13, Katherine goes to a New Grade at her own School where she is visits her own New Class at 8th Grade. Although it started out as Fine at first because it was her First Day at School but oddly enough, a Mean Girl who is the Spoiled Child of a Rich Man (Mary-Ann Galizia) targets the Independent Girl due to her own Family being a bit Poor and how that her Parents were divorced which doesn't offend Katherine but she knows how much it hurts. Once ago, Katherine's Father was tricked into a Random Scam as he had wasted Money on over a New Boat that turned out to be a Fraud. Mrs. Davis blamed her Husband for being tricked into a complete scam but the Father didn't know since he was robbed blinded as Katherine's Parents went through a divorce since they actually wanted to live on each other for now on to survive and get Money by their own way. Katherine feels broke and wishes her own Parents to get back together since they used to love each other as a Couple as Kat wishes that she could help her own Parents and the Money that they would truly want. The Next Day at School however starts out pretty normal, but that is until when Kat notices a Strange Noise coming from Recess of a Group of Bullies bullying a Young Girl named "Leslie" who the Mean Kids picked on her but Kat stood up to the Bullies as she saved Leslie's Life. After one random bad sitution, Kat starts to befriend Lesile as she felt sorry for being picked on at School but Leslie thanks Kat for saving her life. At the Library, Kat and Leslie decide to read a few books but that is when they met up with a Boy named "Duncan" who tell the Girls about the Mysteries of Another Strange World hidden behind a Door, Leslie thinks that it might be true but Kat doesn't believe in Duncan considering that Magicial Worlds are only fantasy and that there is no such thing as a "Hidden World" within the Real Life Universe. On The Seventh Day, when Kat and Leslie are going to the Carnival with their own Fathers together, they go through wonderful rides and other places at the Carnival (even at the Circus). But a Strange Old Man (who is a Janitor) at the Circus tells the Young Girls about "Colorland" which is a Strange World hidden beneath the Human World filled with mixtures of Colors and Unique Creatures that actually existed but are hidden far away from the Town as the Janitor assures the Young Ladies not to go there but Kat still doesn't belive in the whole "Secret World" myth thing as she still believes that is just a joke. After a Day at the Carnival, Kat gets humalited at Lunch when Mary-Ann and the Same Bully Trio that Leslie was picked on harrased Kat at School while being covered in Spaghetti as she gets laughed at for being too different. Conditionally, at Home, Kat cries in her old room after one Day ruined as she wished herself to be in a Much Better Place where she can be Happy, including her Family not being broke. The Next Day however, when Kat was about to go to School, she misses up the Bus Trip so she had no choice but to walk all the way to School before she can miss her own first Class. But as the walk went through, she becomes exhausted for she can't catch through for she knew that she would definitely miss her own Classes at School, but strangley enough, a Mysterious Fox appears out of Nowhere in the Streets. The Fox steals Kat's lunch bag that she kept holding as Kat chases down the Fox through the Woods and into a Mysterious place of an Abandoned House hidden beneath the Woods. Curious at first about the Place, Kat went inside and found the Fox whole stole her Lunch right into a Magic Door of the Abandonded House. Katherine opens up the Mysterious Door and finds nothing but Black Empty Space filled with Darkness, but soon enough when she entered the room, she instantly fell down as the Door Closed behind her as Kat travels through Another World through the Black turned to Rainbow Void while making her transform into a Anthro Pink Cat as Kat lands into Another World which turned out to be Real...Colorland. A Different World that is filled with Different Types of Colors which plays as the opposite of the Real World's true colors of Land (like the Sky being Pink, The Grass being Yellow, the Trees being Purple, Leaves being Blue, Fruits being in their own Pastel Color, and even the Water being Green). When Kat finds herself in a Different World, she is insantly freaked out and even sees her own reflection in the Green River of how she's turned into a Anthro Cat by mistake. Naturally, when Kat finds a couple of Random Creatures roaming through the Woods in Colorland (the Main Animals that are the opposite of Earth's Animals are either Mythical Creatures like Unicorns, Griffins, and Dragons or even Food, Jewel, or Plant-like Animals), she runs through the Woods and finds herself in One of the World's Cities (that being the Town known as "Chromaville"). Throughout the Streets, Kat was amazed to see some fasincating buildings around the City that looked quite familiar to her Old Town but very much Colorful and rather Pastel-like than what was like in the Real World. After a Few Random Hijinks through the Market Places, Kat meets up with a Anthro Dog Girl named "Azurine" (who is around in the Same Age as Kat) at the Park. Azurine is the Opposite of Kat where the Pre-Teen Dog is Optimistic and Joyful whose Parents are not Divorce unlike Kat's own Parents. At first of a surprise, Kat felt a bit scared of meeting Another Colorful Citizen after being chased through by Other Citizens of Chromaville (Ones who were either Animals, Colored-Skin Humanoids, and even Objects that could actually walk on Land) but when Azurine first introduced herself to Kat, she embraced herself with a Warm Friendly Welcome like a Kind Friend as Kat starts to befriend with the Cheerful Puppy Girl when Azurine introduces Kat to this Strange World. While Kat is staying at Azurine's home for a little awhile, Azurine introduces her New Friend her own School (which is called "Cherry Blossom School"), Kat first meets up with Azurine's Friends and even her own Teachers while taking classes through one of the Schools in Chromaville. At the School, Azurine's Friends greeted themselves to meet Kat as they tend to hang out around at Recess and then later talk to each other through lunch and in the Library. Kat and the Kids at Cherry Blossom School have done everything together, a wholesome friendship starts to blossom up, especially around Kat and Azurine. Although Kat still does miss her whole family a lot, she often wonders what would it be like if she and her own family were born in this world instead of the other world that she lives in. However, meanwhile, far away from Colorland and in Another Land where everything is all Black and White, an Evil Warlock by the name of Dr. Monochrome plans to take over Colorland by fading all of its own colors away just to start World Domination by making the Solar Eclipse Monochrome to start expanding the entire Black 'n White land. On The Special Day of Colorland, the Celebration Day called "Eclipse Day" where everyone in Colorland watches the Solar Eclipse up in the Sky, the Mayor and Leader of Chromaville named Mr. Sunshines would often lead the Folks from Chromaville in the Fields just to see the Special Eclipse happening in the World of Colorland. When Kat, Azurine, along with Azurine's own Family and Friends went off to the Eclipse happening, Dr. Monochrome arrives secretly in disguise with his own machine just to turn the Sun pure Monochrome once the Eclipse hits. As the Solar Eclipse hits, Dr. Monochrome instantly blasts the Sun behind the Eclipse as all of the Skies start to turn Gray and then suddenly started to fade all of the colors into becoming monochrome which shockens the rest of the Town Folks. When Dr. Monochrome reveals himself that he is behind this, he warns everyone that if they don't dare try to stop him, he might suck all of the Colors throughout its World which freaks everyone out as the Evil Doctor disappears in thin air as he leaves back to his own home. Back at the Town, Mr. Sunshines announces that someone out there should be able to save Colorland by finding the Seven Gemstones of the Rainbow Crystal in order to save Colorland, which leads Kat to stand out as she decides to help out Colorland's people with the help of her friends to find the Magical Gemstones of Each Color to stop Dr. Monochrome before all of the Colors quickly fade. Accepting the idea, Mr. Sunshines sends out the Young Girls and their Friends with the help of Mr. Sunshines' Butler (Ebenezer) as they start traveling through the lands in Colorland through a Carriage. Upon through the Violet Road, a Group of Bandits (which are either Anthro Vultures, Reptiles, and Goblins) come out of nowhere to surprise the Young Heroes in their carriage as they began trash the carriage and even steal the Children for Gold as they bring them to their Lair (which is an Ancient Underground place filled with Robbers and jewelry that they stole throughout the years). During the Lair, the Bandits were having a Feast over the Jewlery that they stole as the Kids were forced being their own slaves while trying to cook and even feed them. Luckily, later at Night when the Bandits are sleep, Ebenezer comes to the Rescue as he grabs the Kids out of the Lair where they ran away but had to spent some night in the Woods. The Next Morning, one of the Kids finds a Rare Red Gemstone (which is the Cherry Ruby) that is actually part of the Rainbow Crystal that they found which they show it to the rest of the Group as the Gang keep traveling on through the Journey to find each of the Missing Gem shards hidden somewhere in the World. Throughout their Travels to find every missing last shard, the Kids go through some weird random shenanigans by visitng throughout each and every other Land in Colorland. At Sweetland (The Land that is filled with Candy ruled by a Candy King and Queen), they find the Sun Citrine and the Sea Sapphire, At a Festival in Horseland, they found a Lime Peridot underneath the Prizes, At Forestland (which is ruled by an Enchanted Elf King), they Found an Orange Ember on The Elf King's Crown, and even the Violet Amethyst through a Group of Talking Rocks, and lastly all they had to do is find One Last Gemstone that is the Indigo Tanzanite (which was the Hidden Gem that had already been used by Dr. Monochrome to blast the Sun through the Eclipse), so the Gang had no choice but to go find the last piece in the Evil Doctor's Hands. As they arrvive at Dr. Monochrome's castle thanks to the Mysterious Fox that Kat saw again which helped her lead her friends to the Palace, they quickly go inside but they hide themselves just so they wouldn't be noticed by the Evil Doctor in his lair. After defeating Dr. Monochrome's minions when they were fighting his own henchmen through the Halls since Monochrome's minions were trying to stop Kat and her Friends, Kat and Azurine manage to make it in the Doctor's lair where Dr. Monochrome looks through his own windows and sees all of Colorland fading all of its colors away (which seems good news to the Evil Doctor). When Kat tried to grab the Violet Amethyst out near the Machine (which shaped like a telescope), Dr. Monochrome immediately caughts her off Guard as Azurine stops the Doctor for trying to hurt her friend as Kat reaches out the Last Gem and quickly puts them all together as all of the Colorful Gems transform into The Rainbow Crystal. At the moment, the Said Crystal goes up near the Sun which shines on the Rainbow Crystal as all of Colorland turns back to normal with its own rightful colors back to the way it was before. Dr. Monochrome is arrested as he is said to be sent in Jail for over Eight Years because of the crimes of what he did of wanting to rule over the World. The Entire City of Chromaville cheer for Kat and her Friends for saving the entire world thanks to the help of Mr. Sunshines' Butler but there was only one solution left for Kat; Kat already had been realizing on how much she had been gone in the Real World for a past couple of days as she missed her whole family so she asks the Mayor if there is a way out to get back to the real world as Kat reveals that she's actually from Another Place. Ebenezer does reveal that they do have a Magic Portal that does contact to the Real World in the Other Room of Mr. Sunshines' palace. In Mr. Sunshine's Chambers, Ebenezer shows the Magic Portal Door to the Kids and Mr. Sunshines as the Butler reminds his Boss that they have kept the Portal Door to the Other World for Years. With a Final Last Goodbye, Kat thanks everyone for the greatest adventure they had as she hugs Azurine for she says one last Goodbye before she could encountered the Real World again. When she was finally home to reality, Kat woke up and found herself around the Abandoned House that she went before, she then sees the Myserious Fox again who follows her to her way Home as she realizes on how much she has been Gone for the past couple of Days. When she is found by a Group of Expolorers who have been searching for Her, they bring her to Kat's house where Kat's Parents were devasted at heart for they have missed their Daughter who disappeared on them as Kat reunited with her Parents in an emotional happy family reunion as Kat's Parents were no longer divorced as they apologized for what they did as they live as a Happy Family together again as Kat's live in the Mortal World changes for the better. When I first thought of this concept in this first place, I was orginally going to make it a Horror Comedy Story called "Pasteland" which would have the same concept as a Girl wanting to be in a better life but the sub-plot would've been differently about a Candymaker who kidnapps people to make candy (yeah, I know, that does sound like a more f*cked up concept) but I had to change the concept up a bit because even though I have done some Dark Original Works of Mine, I figure why not do a Lighter Comedy Original Story inspired by a lot of 80s Girls Cartoons.
