COVID still rages, and the Biden administration isnât helping - Published Jan 6, 2024
Readers who bristled at my assertion roughly a year ago â when the term âpost-pandemicâ was used a lot more cautiously than it is now â that we should still be masking really wonât like this: We should still be wearing masks indoors, because the COVID-19 pandemic still rages. And, as a physician writing on The Timesâ op-ed page makes clear, the Biden administration isnât helping.
The numbers of new infections and hospital admissions are sobering: Wastewater data indicate that the JN.1 variant of COVID-19 is infecting about 2 million Americans every day, making this surge second in prevalence only to the Omicron wave that hit in 2021 and 2022. Thanks to vaccines, the Omicron peak was less deadly than the wave that hit in late 2020 and early 2021, when mask mandates and social distancing were still our primary weapons against COVID-19 and inoculation was only beginning.
Even though the Omicron wave for most people marks the beginning of the âliving with this diseaseâ phase of COVID â where we forgo mitigation and accept the risks of infection by a survivable virus â large groups of people fared worse than ever. You know who did really poorly? Cancer patients, who died at a higher rate than during any previous surge. With compromised immune systems, they benefit more from mitigation measures such as masking than vaccination, but by the time Omicron rolled around many of us had grown tired of covering our faces and keeping our distance.
For most people, the price of an Omicron infection was mild illness and possibly long COVID; for cancer patients, it was a higher likelihood of dying.
As for long COVID â when crippling symptoms persist for months or even years after infection â itâs hard to quantify the price to society from millions of people walking around with brain fog and fatigue for interminable periods, not to mention the increased risk of heart disease and stroke long after infection. Deciding to live with COVID doesnât mean any of this goes away, if by âliving with COVIDâ you mean refusing to wear a high-quality mask.
Writing on our op-ed page, Dr. Eric J. Topol â whose work communicating the risks of unfettered virus circulation I consider indispensable â reminds us of the damage this JN.1 surge does to people without fully functioning immune systems, and the need of the government to continue developing vaccines that deliver better protection from COVID variants. He ends his piece, appropriately, by criticizing the Biden administrationâs complacency:
âItâs crickets from the White House on COVID now, with no messaging on getting the updated booster or masking. The Biden administration has done far too little to accelerate research on effective treatments for long COVID.
âThis passivity reinforces the illusion that the pandemic is behind us when itâs actually raging. And this season will be followed by a more quiescent period, which will, once again, lull us into thinking the pandemic is over. But there is no getting over it until we recognize reality and double down on the research that will allow us to block infections and virus spread, and achieve lasting, variant-proof immunity.â
As we head towards this year's election, remember just how much pain and suffering Biden's inaction on covid has caused and continues to cause. There are several candidates running whose covid policy is light years away from Biden's. Vote for what you believe in, not out of fear. Do everything you can to make a better future instead of stifling better for maybe perhaps kinda not as bad (for you personally based on vibes).

SIR TIM LAURENCE APPOINTED KENT CRICKET CLUB PRESIDENT FOR 2025
Published Friday 26th April 2024
Kent Cricket is delighted to confirm that Vice-Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence KCVO, CB, ADC(P) will be the Clubâs President once more in 2025.
Sir Tim was originally appointed as the President for 2020, the Clubâs 150th Anniversary Year, but the outbreak and management of the COVID-19 Pandemic hampered both his Presidency and the Clubâs celebrations. He will succeed Judy Ufton as Club President on 1 January 2025 until the end of that calendar year.
Sir Tim has a strong connection to Kent and a lifelong passion for the game. Having been brought up in Ightham, he was educated at Sevenoaks School, where he was a key member of their 1st XI, batting at the top of the order with former Kent captain Chris Tavaré and former Kent Director of Cricket, Paul Downton.
He attended Durham University, where he represented his College cricket team. Upon leaving Durham, he completed his initial training at the Britannia Royal Naval College Dartmouth. During his distinguished naval career, Sir Tim commanded four warships and held several Ministry of Defence positions, including Chief Executive, Defence Estates.
Since his retirement from the Navy in 2010, Sir Tim pursues a number of non-executive and charitable interests. These included being Chairman of English Heritage which has many historic sites across Kent, Vice Chairman of The Commonwealth War Graves Commission and a Trustee of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and HMS Victory.
Sir Tim will be the Clubâs eighth multi-year President after The 3rd Lord Harris (1870-71), A.C. Norman (1914-18), The 4th Lord Northbourne (1930-31), Major H.S. Hatfield (1938-45), Sir Edward Hardy (1957-58), Lt. Col. W.O.H. Joynson (1959-60) & Lady Kingsdown (2015-16). He will be the first Kent Cricket President to have more than one year in the role inconsecutively.
Kent Cricketâs Chair, Simon Philip, said: âWe are delighted that Sir Tim has accepted Presidency of the Club once more after holding the post five years ago.
âOur 150th Anniversary Year and Timâs presidency did not turn out as planned and so it is great that Tim will now be able to enjoy fully being President and we will be able to benefit from his input into the Club and our Menâs and Womenâs cricket.â
Sir Tim Laurence said: âIt is both an honour and a privilege to be asked to take on the Presidency for a second time.â
âI much look forward to becoming more closely involved with the Club again and to providing whatever support and encouragement I can.â
#exciting!!!#very glad he will get a second go at being their president#tim laurence#timothy laurence

Donald Trumpâs shortlist for his running mate is full of the right wingâs worst political starsâaside from himself, that is. But reported vice presidential hopeful Kristi Noem has one skeleton in her closetâer, in the woodsâthat will not be helpful in the polls.
The South Dakota governor admits to deliberately killing her 14-month-old pet dog Cricket in her upcoming book No Going Back: The Truth on Whatâs Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward, reported The Guardian, which obtained an advance copy of the book, on Friday. The book is due out next month.
âI hated that dog,â Noem writes, calling her âuntrainable,â ïżœïżœdangerous to anyone she came in contact with,â and âless than worthless⊠as a hunting dog.â
After repeated failed attempts to train Cricket as a hunting dog, the straw that broke the camelâs back was when Cricket mauled a familyâs chickens when Noem stopped at their house following a pheasant hunt.
Cricket had escaped Noemâs truck and attacked the familyâs chickens, âgrabb[ing] one chicken at a time, crunching it to death with one bite, then dropping it to attack another.â
Noem wrote that she repeatedly apologized, wrote the family a check âfor the price they asked, and helped them dispose of the carcasses littering the scene of the crime.â
âIt was not a pleasant job,â she writes, âbut it had to be done. And after it was over, I realized another unpleasant job needed to be done.â
Noem recalls getting her gun and leading Cricket to a gravel pit before executing her.
Critics were quick to point out that the fault was not with Cricket, but with Noem herself. A 14-month-old dog is a âbaby that doesnât know any better,â Dan Lussen, a professional hunting dog trainer, told Rolling Stone.
âTo me, itâs a lack of guidance by the owner, or training by the owner, or discipline by the owner,â he said, explaining that training a young hunting dog is a lengthy and slow process. âThereâs a lot of steps that you take before you take it to a field and shoot birds over it.â
Noemâs record as governor of South Dakota isnât clean, either. Several Native tribes in the state have banned her from their reservations over her racist assertions that Natives in the state work with drug cartels and neglect their children. Plus, Noemâs handling of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a high number of cases in the state, and she tried to prevent Native tribes from implementing their own COVID safety measures.
Her attitude towards canines may not put her in Trumpâs VP doghouse, though. He has repeatedly called his opponents dogs as an insult, mentioned on multiple occasions about how much he doesnât like them, and famously avoided having a pet dog as president because he said it âfeels a little phony to me.â

The future of the French international womenâs cricket team is in doubt after 17 players called for an investigation into allegations that its governing body staged fake matches to secure funding from the International Cricket Council. With cricket set to become an Olympic sport after the 2024 Paris Games, FRANCE 24 looked at the reasons behind the team's collapse.
Tara Britton turned up to training, held every Thursday for the menâs and womenâs French national cricket teams, last November 16 as scheduled. It wasnât a big turnout for the womenâs side, as she was one of only two who showed.
A day earlier, she had joined 16 of her national side teammates in signing an open letter calling for an official investigation into France Cricket following allegations published by FRANCE 24 in November, including that the governing body was staging fake womenâs matches to access more funding from the International Cricket Council (ICC).
âIf the allegations are true, we condemn the actions as outrageous and, as players of the national Womenâs team, we wish to strongly and firmly dissociate ourselves from the behaviour and actions of France Cricket,â the letter read.
France Cricketâs sporting director Saravana Durairaj arrived at the track in the 15th arrondissement (district) of Paris as they finished their session, Britton recounted.
Durairaj, who was recently made CEO of the association, had coached the women through the highs and lows of international tournaments since 2019. Their greatest success: promotion to Division One of the ICC 2024 Womenâs T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier, beating Sweden, Turkey, Jersey and Germany along the way. Â
That was the pinnacle of French womenâs cricket, which has now arrived at its nadir.Â
âHe told us, âYouâre not welcome anymoreâ â that weâre suspended,â said Britton, a wicket-keeper and right-handed batter who has played 29 matches for France. âHe was visibly quite angry. He wouldn't let us say anything, wouldnât let us explain our side. He was basically saying he was disappointed in us. He felt let down that â after all the time and effort he put into us â that we have treated him like this.â
It is against France Cricket rules for national team players to criticise the governing body publicly at risk of being âexcluded from the French national teamâ, reads a code of conduct signed by players.
âWe dared to say that we knew there were some problems within the federation,â said Lara Armas, a left-handed batter who, like Britton, debuted in 2021. âCan you really say that that is criticism? Itâs factual.â
From 2019 to 2023, Armas was on France Cricketâs committee and was appointed head of their commission for the womenâs game.
âWe didnât accuse anyone in particular. We didnât name anyone, we simply asked for clarifications,â said Magali Marchello-Nizia, a right-arm bowler who made her debut in 2019.
The team made France Cricket aware they were going to publish the letter before they did so. âSome of us were even pressured by France Cricket not to publish anything. You could even qualify some of these as threats,â said Alix Brodin, a left-handed batter who debuted after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Asked what exactly was threatened, Armas recalled that Durairaj told one of the players, âIf you do that, I canât protect you anymore.â
Contacted by FRANCE 24, Durairaj said that a decision about the womenâs team would be published in May. He did not respond to more detailed allegations.
âNo communicationâ
Without any further communication from their governing body, players were removed from WhatsApp groups involving them. On November 19, they found out â via social media â that they would no longer be participating in the inaugural Womenâs European Cricket Championship, scheduled to begin less than a month later on December 17.
The organisers, the European Cricket Network (ECN), announced that a team from England would be replacing France at the tournament in Malaga involving the national sides of Spain, the Netherlands, Italy and Austria.
âIn a recent development, the French Cricket Federation, Association Française de Cricket, has unfortunately withdrawn their teamâs participation,â read a press release. ECN declined to comment further.
âIâve received no email, no communication from France Cricket explaining anything at all,â said Brodin.
Word spread in January that the women could only apply to be part of the national team this year if they apologised.
âWeâve done nothing wrong,â said Armas. âIâm not apologising for saying, âThereâs an investigation going on, I want the truthâ.â
To this day, the only written communication the womenâs national team has received from France Cricket was an email sent on March 1 asking each of them to return their uniforms âfor logistical reasonsâ.
Shut up and play cricket
FRANCE 24âs investigation last November raised questions over whether France was eligible to participate in ICC tournaments as it has done since 2021, given the difficulty of proving that the country has the requisite minimum of eight domestic womenâs teams âcompeting in a minimum of five hard-ball matches for the previous two yearsâ, as per ICC rules.
Players acknowledged having their suspicions.
âItâs always the same three or four clubs that provide womenâs national team players,â said Brodin. âWe know very well that whatâs been written is true, we just never went looking for proof.â
Several said their decision to take part regardless came down to the lack of other opportunities to play cricket. Even for the womenâs first division, for instance, only three match days were organised last season.
âThe dilemma weâre faced with is absolutely unjust,â said all-rounder Poppy McGeown, who played 27 matches for France. âIn France there are very few opportunities to play ⊠either you shut your mouth and play cricket, or you decide to take a more ethical approach and speak up to condemn things that you find unfair or illegal, and that comes with being kicked out of the team.â
âYou have to choose between the sport you love and the values you hold dear. So for two years I closed my eyes, and Iâm not particularly proud of it,â she said.
Armas said she also turned a blind eye.
âI was egotistical,â she said. âI wanted to play, so yes, I did close my eyes on some things. I have to say thank you to all those girls who didnât.â
More evidence of âghost matchesâÂ
The womenâs first- and second-division tournaments have disappeared from France Cricketâs plans for this year, replaced by a âFrance Womenâs Cupâ featuring 10 teams due to kick off this Saturday, April 13.
Out of the four first-division teams from last year, only Lille Cricket Club and Paris UniversitĂ© Club are slated to participate, with Nantes Cricket Club not renewing its affiliation with France Cricket in the wake of the scandal and Lisses Cricket Club planning to do the same for its womenâs team.
The other eight clubs include seven from last yearâs Division Two, which was the subject of Novemberâs FRANCE 24 report.
Since its publication, more evidence of irregularities in this division has come to light.
On April 16, six Division Two matches were scheduled to take place on Chantilly cricket ground. All six were subsequently rubber-stamped as having taken place by France Cricketâs sporting commission.
Edward Hoyle, captain of Chantilly Cricket Club, said he arrived just before 2pm to renovate the wicket, only to be told a womenâs match was about to start.
âThat match did take place, but it was all over in 20 minutes. Thatâs 10 minutes an innings,â recalled Hoyle. âWhether that constitutes a match or not, I donât know.â
Once the short match was over, Hoyle proceeded to strip and relay the wicket, a process that took several hours.
It is clear that the fourth, fifth and sixth matches did not happen at the time and place for which they were certified.
In its response to FRANCE 24âs November report on womenâs ghost matches, France Cricket said âthe results shown on its website are those communicated via the match reports handed in by the umpires at the end of each matchâ.
The chair of one of the clubs that was responsible for umpiring on April 16 denied his club was involved in matches that did not actually take place. He said he had delegated responsibility for the womenâs team to the club captain and wasnât aware of specific events that day.
When asked how his club planned to field a women's team this year, he acknowledged it would be a challenge. âWe have womenâs teams, but theyâre students ïżœïżœ you have to organise it during school holidays. Itâs a bit difficult.â
France Cricket did not respond to a request for comment.
On November 16, Nantes Cricket Club sent a request to state prosecutors and police asking for an investigation into alleged fraudulent activity by the association.
In April 2022, the Versailles public prosecutor dismissed defamation charges brought by France Cricket against Hoyle, which he said were brought after he wrote a letter to clubs criticising the organisation.
âThe ICC has investigated the allegations in relation to France Cricket and are satisfied that the issue is now closed,â a spokesperson for the sport's global administrator told Alison Mitchell of the BBCâs "Stumped" podcast. âEach Member is wholly responsible for the participation data that is submitted per the census and accuracy of these records remains of utmost importance and are audited by the ICC.â
From New Caledonia with cricketers
During a meeting with the France Cricket board while she was head of the womenâs commission, Armas recalled pushing for a recognition of the reality on the ground. âCome on, among us we can admit it,â she said. âThere are only four womenâs teams in cricket. We know there are only four teams in Division One, and Division Two is fake.â
In response, she recalled, âI was almost insulted. Like, âHow can you say this?â I got shut down badly.â
She also remembered conversations with Durairaj in which he shared his conviction that the way to develop womenâs cricket in France was not via domestic competitions, but âto have a strong national teamâ.
But now, France Cricket must assemble an entirely new one â notably ahead of another ECN tournament in December to which France has been invited, according to one source, but not confirmed by ECN.
The governing body emailed clubs on January 16 asking for candidates for both national teams, but none of the previous womenâs squad who spoke to FRANCE 24 have put their names forward.
One avenue that France Cricket is exploring to bolster its womenâs team lies far from the French mainland, in New Caledonia. A traditional form of cricket, played mostly by indigenous Kanak women, has been popular in the French overseas territory since the sport was introduced by English missionaries.
France Cricket chairman Prebagarane Balane visited the southwest Pacific islands in March, accompanied by Durairaj, where he signed an agreement with New Caledoniaâs sports minister MickaĂ«l Forrest and cricket committee head Jean-Marc Ihily. The deal obliges the committee to register all of its players with France Cricket by August 31, which could add some 3,000 to the 1,800 players that the association currently claims are on its books.
It also grants France Cricket the right to call up players in New Caledonia for the French national team, but not if they play the non-standard form of the game.
On March 30, at France Cricketâs annual general meeting at their office in Saint-Maurice near Paris, Balane was joined by Ihily in person to announce plans for a womenâs tournament in NoumĂ©a, the capital of New Caledonia, this September. Balane stressed the importance of recruitment ahead of the 2025 ICC Womenâs World Cup in India.
Marchello-Nizia said that two years ago, Durairaj told her about looking to New Caledonia for potential womenâs national team players. âThings might have accelerated, given recent developments,â she said.
Death of a national team?
Asked if the current national team was dead, Britton was equivocal. âThe team obviously doesn't stop with us. But as far as the players are concerned, I feel like we've been asked not to come back.â
McGeown lamented the state of French cricket. âWhen you have the honour and pride of playing for your country, no matter what the sport, itâs a huge motivator. And now weâve lost it because weâre not ready to play as part of this system.â

I haven't been on social media much, and I haven't been editing photos either. I was really sad about Kiya's death. Sort of the end of an era. I met my current (and forever) landlord because of her two dogs, Cricket and Kiya, and five years later they're both gone.
David (on fiddle) is my landlord's husband. They rekindled their high school romance 40+ years later right before the covid-19 lockdown and married when it was over. That's a $3000 bow. I didn't even know such things existed.
@reallyndacarter Someone you used to work with was also at this dinner party last night. I go around the table with the camera at the end.

The Trial's pivotal Track was inspired by a Sushant Singh Rajput, Rhea Chakraborty, and Arnab Goswami episode.
Three years ago, the COVID-19 pandemic was causing havoc in India, but the Sushant Singh Rajput death case was also receiving attention from the media and some online users. Rhea Chakraborty's portrayal as the villain eventually turned the situation into a media spectacle. A number of outrageous accusationsâthe majority of which lacked any supporting evidenceâwere made against her in connection with the actor's death. This iconic episode is covered in a key track in the most recent web series, The Trial, which debuted today on Disney+ Hotstar.
In the leading role, Kajol plays a mother trying to support her family after her husband is implicated in a bribery and sex scandal in The Trial. To make ends meet, she must work at a law firm. Every episode depicts Noyonika Sengupta (Kajol) battling a different case. The death of cricketer Mohit Singh, which occurred in mysterious circumstances, is one such case that is quite memorable. Juhi Bhatia, his girlfriend, has been detained on suspicion of aiding suicide. Despite the fact that the deceased is depicted as a sportsman, it is obvious that the Sushant Singh Rajput case served as inspiration for the film's creators.
The 2020 case is also notable because popular news anchor Arnab Goswami tried his best to persuade his viewers that Sushant Singh Rajput was killed by Rhea Chakraborty by presenting them with various theories. Daksh Rathod (Atul Kumar), a character based on him, also treats Juhi in the same way. Daksh Rathod is depicted as working for SNP News while Arnab happens to be the owner of Republic Network.
Crucial track in Kajolâs The Trial inspired by Sushant Singh Rajput â Rhea Chakraborty â Arnab Goswami episode : Bollywood News

so, the EU has recently approved the use of cricket's flour in our food and... Mother has finally a new conspiracy flag to wave!!
(this is only the fourth bug they're approving for food supply, it's not even the first!!).
after the vaccines (still against but at least she doesn't tell they cause autism anymore), the yellow party that, in her opinion, were the new and improved and instead were bullshit and the old like everyone else and covid-19, she has new battle!
finally! she wasn't looking like herself without a pointless and ignorant battle to wave around (oh right, the 5G too). kind of missed the old conspiracy gal.
till now, I managed to keep my mouth shut, but I'm not sure how long will I be able to do it.
this evening she shared a list of foods that we should be on the lookout for and we should be vary of every label that say "proteins" (no more eggs people!! chicken might have fed on a cricket!!)
now I have my three brain cells fighting:
one is the rabid ones, it wants to ask her if she think all the other cultures are somewhat at fault for enjoying bugs protein in the last millennials
one is the troll one, it wants to tell her that were are already on the waiting list for the first official product with crickets flour (cookies!!) and we hope they will give us a bit of wisdom and luck [double cit]
the third one is trying to keep them quite because both approaches will just fuel Mother and it will not be good for our peace
I mean, I can barely manage her when I agree with her, you have no idea how I went very close to throw something at her when she and few friends of her where discussing how dangerous vaccines are for kids. she was a kindergarten teacher, so I was not just pissed, I was worried about her influence. but now she's no in a position to hurt anybody, so... I just want to troll her!!
LET ME TROLL HER YOU DAMN COMMON SENSE!!
#she deserves it#she had it coming Ăč.Ăč#she's lucky we mostly want to troll her and not give her back her own shit#anyway#I want to troll her so bad!!!#you have no idea#heresiae's chronicles

The Sin of Pride
Looking back over the year that was, so many things have happened. Honestly, itâs hard to believe that all of this was crammed into just 365 days. And yet it did. Life in 2022 has been hard. Especially as people have stepped out from their caves and have attempted to return to a life of normalcy. True, COVID-19 has still rampaged and caused chaos but as the year has gone on, itâs become something thatâs accepted by most able-bodied people in the community. And what of those individuals that are immunocompromised or have disabilities? Well, theyâre simply part of the price that most people pay as we transition back to the ânew normal.âÂ
For many, if itâs out of sight, itâs out of mind.
But Iâm getting ahead of myself.
The start of 2022 was a fraught time for many of us in Australia. Soaring cases of Omicron and a lack of rapid antigen tests (RAT) meant that many holidays were cut short because of testing requirements to visit family in other states. On a personal scale, it had me panicked for attending a friendâs wedding reception early on in the year. For, if I did not have a RAT, how would I be able to test and make sure I would be hale and hearty?
But it wasnât all fun and games. During the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic endured a trial by fire in trying to come to compete. His visa was cancelled, then reinstated after a challenge with the Federal Circuit Court, and then cancelled again by the then immigration minister.
Prince Andrew was stripped of his military titles and royal patronage because of all his shitty behaviour. And in more recent news, heâs been formally banned from Buckingham Palace.
Not long afterwards, there was a huge eruption in Tonga that led to the underwater communication cables being destroyed. This meant that people could receive no news about their loved ones as the islands were battered by tsunamis as a result of the volcano saying that enough was enough. The Philippines also saw a volcanic eruption.
In the world of gaming, Microsoft bought out Activision Blizzard. However, even now, that sale has yet to go through with the FTC suing Microsoft to block its acquisition. How it will all shake out is anyoneâs guess but for for this loyal fan of the PlayStation, I certainly hope it doesnât come to fruition. Even if it does, Activision Blizzard has so tarnished their reputation, it might be a good long while yet before peace can be restored in what was once a much celebrated company.
Back out in the world, Burkina Fasoâs military took over the country. And then, of course, before spring had hit the northern hemisphere (and autumn down here in the south), Russia invaded Ukraine. Why? Well, supposedly to save it from fascists. But as anyone who is keeping up with the news cycle knows, the narrative continues to change because the resistance that Ukraine has put up has stemmed, and occasionally reversed, the red tide.Â
In Australia, many were shocked by the sudden death of famous cricketer: Shane Warne. Easter brought with it severe flooding in NSW and QLD, with fears of Japanese encephalitis spreading in the southern states. The rains, of course, returned in the spring of 2022 and even now there are parts of Northern NSW that are still recovering.Â
Beyond that, there was Ash Bartyâs retirement from tennis! After reaching World Number 1, the Australian tennis player stepped down and back from the eyes of the world.Â
Elsewhere, Sri Lanka was undergoing a severe economic crisis. Many a protest was held, with many finding their way into the presidential abode and enjoying a dip in the Presidentâs pool. In Pakistan, Imran Khan narrowly avoided a no-confidence vote to be ousted as Prime Minister for Pakistan. A week later, however, he is tossed out. As for the Philippines, Marcos, son of the previous dictator, was voted in as President of the Philippines - with many of those that had voted for him buying into the narrative he and his mother weaved when once they were pariahs to the Filipino people.Â
Honestly, it is astounding how quickly people can forget the crimes of a previous regime.
In May, Labor won the Australian Federal Election. Thankfully, unlike many of their counterparts in other places of the world, the conservative party didnât attempt to claim election fraud. Rather, they bowed out with some grace. But instead of providing bipartisan support for ways to better the country, it could be said that theyâve returned to sniping off snide remarks from their very much diminished position as the opposition. And even though Labor won, much of it could be attributed to the introduction of Teal Independents and other smaller parties taking the fore.
Beyond politics, there was flooding in South Africa, Ukraine won Eurovision, and shooting returned to America after a brief stopper with the COVID-19 pandemic. While some of the shootings were motivated by race, others occurred in schools, which led right back to the debate of American gun control. Something that has still yet to see resolution as pro-gun lobbyists continue to advocate for dangerous guns out in the public.
With COVID-19 somewhat in the background but with the world still struggling with certain supply lines, many countries were struggling with high inflation. Many countries such as Tunisia, Ethiopia, Ghana, El Salvador, Turkey and Pakistan found themselves in an economic crisis. It certainly hadnât helped when COVID-19 had disrupted trade across the world. But with low interest rates to combat the lack of spending when the virus was running rampant, the sudden war in Ukraine (the breadbasket of the world), essentials also became harder to acquire. Coupled with the effects of climate change...well...is it any wonder?
Back in politics, the landmark Roe vs Wade case was overturned. To combat this, Biden signed an executive order to protect several key human rights. Across the pond, Boris Johnson was forced to resign. He was followed by Liz Truss (who lasted about 40 or so days - not even as long as a head of lettuce) before being replaced by Rishi Sunak, the first Prime Minister of Indian ethnicity.
Shinzo Abe was shot while giving a speech, before later dying.
And in Australia, scandal of scandals, our previous Prime Minister: Scott Morrison, was discovered to have secretly appointed himself the head of five Ministry Departments. His excuse? To better manage the COVID-19 emergency.
In celebrity deaths, none could have competed against the passing of Queen Elizabeth II this year. For Australians, though the death of Olivia Newton-John hit close to home. While I mourned the loss of the much beloved Angela Lansbury. There were also a slew of deaths among the old communist regimes with Mikael Gorbachev and Jiang Zemin.
As the latter months of 2022 continued, there was the launch of the James Webb telescope. Since then, my Tumblr dash has been filled with magnificent photos taken from space. Other big events included record heat waves in Europe with many countries across the globe also suffering an energy crisis, hastening the need to transition to renewable energy.
Russia, still trying to subdue the Ukrainians after a disastrous foray that should have ended in mere days, was forced to partially mobilise their reserve troops. To punish the other countries in Europe for stymieing their attempts at bringing Ukraine to heal, they also closed off gas supplies to Europe.Â
As October approached, protests began in Iran following the death of a woman held in custody by the moral police. In Australia, however, many of the populace were rocked by revelations of personal data being compromised by companies such as Optus and Medibank. And in Seoul, after reopening to tourists following the COVID-19 pandemic, several people were crushed to death in a panic stampede in the narrow streets in the Itaewon neighbourhood.Â
The rest of 2022 was a cavalcade of chaos. Trump, defying the advice of his closest advisors, made a tilt for a 2024 presidential run. Even as the January 6 committee recommended that criminal charges be brought against him. An explosion in rural village in Poland spooked many before it was determined to be a result of Ukrainian anti-air defence. Elon Musk, showing how geniuses can still be terribly stupid, bought Twitter and is intent on running it into the ground. Even Tesla stocks have tanked. And following form his acquisition of Twitter, many people have seen what a terrible boss he would be to have.
On Tumblr, with many Twitter users fleeing one social media site for another Hell site, the good people decided to bring back a long lost classic. That of Goncharov. The best mafia film ever made. Or, at least, thatâs what they would have liked people to believe.
As Christmas started ramping up, the FIFA World Cup was underway. In the end, after a hard fought battle, Argentina emerged as the victors.
But though 2022 could have ended on a high note, civil unrest in Peru, a shooting in Paris and blizzards bombarding the United States and Canada, have left many without power. In China, after lifting all COVID-19 restrictions following protests, COVID numbers are rising, with many individuals hospitalised.Â
Looking back on the year that has been, 2022 has not been the bounce back from the pandemic many have hoped. The economy of many countries is a shambles, rocked by high inflation due to the prices for basic goods. Climate change has also shown it is not going away with natural disasters occurring more frequently. If humans hope to survive as a species, and enjoy our current luxuries (especially in first world countries), there are several things that need to change.Â
Although starting at an individual level, this also needs to come from governments and those with the authority/ power to make more meaningful changes. Iâm looking at you big oil/ energy companies.
You would think that such companies, knowing how capitalism works, would be smart enough to PIVOT. Donât keep relying on the same old finite resources that will lead to humans being wiped out. If you want to be clever and capitalise, PIVOT! Itâs a common thing for all successful businesses. That way, you wonât be behind the ball.Â
By predicting where the market goes, you could make such a killing!
But do you?
No! Because youâre stupid. Holding onto old glories.
If I was your shareholder, Iâd sell your stocks fast because clearly you havenât gotten the memo. Honestly, what happened to being flexible?Â
On a personal level, this year has been very heavy on change for me. Iâve grown out my fringe (a small thing), nabbed a promotion, refinanced my investment property and have started trying to date. Will it be successful? Who knows. But maybe in this way, Iâll be able to learn a little bit more about myself and what I want out of life.
Will the world learn in 2023? Or will we only hasten our own demise?
I, for one, would not prefer civilisation taking such a huge hit that it vanishes entirely, but with disease, war and possible other issues in the past, has the golden age of our modern age finally come to an end due to our hubris?Â
Only time will tell.Â

[ad_1] Narendra Modi Stadium Itâs official. India wants to host the 2036 Olympics and Paralympics, but the big question is when and where. On Tuesday, news flew thick and fast, with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports being quoted first, India had submitted an official letter through the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). It was addressed to the International Olympic Committeeâs Future Host Commission. By late evening on Tuesday, the news was confirmed through a video posted by PT Usha, president, IOA, attesting that the National Olympic Committee had written in October 2024 to the IOC. To start with, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had attended the IOC session last year in Mumbai. He had spoken about Indiaâs keenness to host the Summer Olympics as well as the Paralympics. He had again mentioned it to the Indian diaspora in New York a few months ago. India is very keen to host the Games. This is, indeed, fantastic news, but there has to be a proper bid document expressing intent and where the Olympics is to be held and how the host city will go through the process. A mere three-page letter sent by the IOA would serve very little purpose. Anyone who has followed the Olympic Movement and how nations bid for the Summer Olympics is aware that the bid is made by a host city. There are elaborate plans, detailing how it will work and what will be the infrastructure put in place. More importantly, legacy value, how the Olympics will address climate change and more contentious issues like carbon emission levels are discussed. Above all, there is a strong push to cap the cost of the Games. If these are fine details, right now, nobody knows which city in India will be the host. It cannot be like this. Since the time Motera in the outskirts of Ahmedabad was refurbished and rechristened as the Narendra Modi Stadium in 2021, right in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, there have been murmurs that Ahmedabad will be the host city. Indeed, the renovated cricket stadium can be converted into a main stadium for the Olympics. There is plenty of real estate around, which can be developed for more stadiums as well. But the point is, nobody has officially mentioned Ahmedabad, or even Gandhinagar, as the host city. This lack of clarity on the Olympic host city is now being questioned abroad by those who have taken note of Indiaâs interest. Mind you, nobody is mocking Indiaâs intent to host the Olympics. A lot has changed since the time India hosted the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. The CWG was delivered well, but lawsuits, corruption cases, officials going to jail and more dirt grabbed the headlines after the Games ended. Even now, the Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, which hosted the opening and closing ceremonies plus the main events like track and field makes news for the wrong reasons like the venue had been rented out for a music concert. Debris and dirt were left behind which came in for flak. Surely, hosting an Olympics means the city has to be identified first. Take the case of Australia, when it wanted to host the Games in 2000. They came to know in 1993 that the showpiece event had been awarded to Sydney by the IOC. Indeed, Sydney did a great job, with public participation at an all-time high. Again, despite political differences in Brisbane, the stakeholders are planning in detail how they will host the Olympics in 2032. Australia is a sporting nation and plans well in advance. For that matter, even when the Victoria state decided it was not going to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, it informed the CGF (Commonwealth Games Federation) in 2023 itself. India has the will to host an Olympics but no time can be wasted in identifying which city will be the host. This is the first question which the world is asking at this point of time. Unless there is clarity in this regard, there can be no movement forward. Again, this decision cannot be taken by the IOA, it has to come from the highest office. The good part, many athletes and Para-athletes
have already sent in best wishes that India hosts the Summer Olympics and Paralympics successfully. What needs to be done right away is to name the host city. That will surely create a buzz. According to the host association, sales on the first day of business have tripled compared to 2018â19. The game was played in front of only 30,000 viewers at the 100,000-plus capacity stadium during the 2020/21 tours owing to COVID-19 restrictions.
CA went on to say that purchases for days 2-4 have increased by an astounding 5.5 times since India's 2018â19 Down Under tour.
Joel Morrison, Executive General Manager, Events & Operations at CA stated "The Border Gavaskar series is a highly anticipated event and current ticket sales show there is enormous interest in the upcoming contest between Australia and India."
"We're asking fans to buy tickets now to ensure they don't miss out on any of the behavior, as tickets are going by fast for all five Tests as excitement for the upcoming summer continues to build" he said.
The percentage of tickets purchased by Indian fans has increased to 3.9 percent from just 0.7 percent in 2018â19, which is another significant figure.
A significant number of out-of-country groups are anticipated to attend Test matches this summer Morrison added. "We continue to see strong sales from Indian fans as well as Australian fans presenting an excellent chance to celebrate the lasting connection between our two countries both on and off the field."
The first game of the five-Test series between Australia and India will take place in Perth on November 22.
