Dead Boy Detectives does a lot of things very, very well, but one thing I haven't seen touched on very much is set design. It is phenomenal, and the amount of detail that's gone into literally every scene is truly mind-blowing. I'm going to do a couple of posts breaking down the setting details in various locations I think, but I wanted to start with one that does an incredible amount of storytelling in the tiny understated details.
So let's talk about Charles' room from when he was still alive.
Some of the details are quite small, but I've circled and numbered them so that I can discuss them more easily.
First up, and this one doesn't have a number because it's the entire room, but. They have this boy down in the basement. In a cramped little space that looks like it's twice the size of a twin bed.
Then we come to all the little things that make it so much worse:
1: Charles' room is covered with band posters. If you look closely though, these aren't the kind of posters you'd buy in a store. These are the sorts of posters that they display at venues when a band is in town. Every one of them that's readable has locations/dates/sales info. These aren't someone buying Charles something of his own, to decorate his room with. This is Charles "My smile is pretty convincing" Rowland going to venues after the band has finished its run and asking for the posters to take home.
2: It's hard to tell from the angle, but it looks like he has a couple of model airplanes up on the ceiling. Okay, this one's kind of cute.
3: Again, hard to tell from the angle, but it looks like he has a shelf of sports trophies tucked away back there. This boy tries so damn hard.
4: A dart board. Huh. That's funny. Where are the darts?
5: Oh, here they are. They're outside the room! Like his asshole father! Stole his darts! And threw them at the door!!
6: Probably a boombox, presumably the one that he used to play the tape mentioned in the Devlin house episode. Notably, there are no tapes in sight. Did his father break his only tape?
7: The world's saddest bed, with a ratty old pillow and one (1) single sheet.
8: And as if we needed any more heartbreak in this scene, that's Charles' cricket bat there in the corner. His weapon of choice? The thing he picks up to defend Edwin, over and over, episode after episode, for the entire series? He's cowering practically on top of it while his father beats him. He didn't so much as touch it when it was himself that needed defending.
You're welcome. If I have to be heartbroken over set dressing, I'm dragging you all with me.

just finished watching "never fear", and episode of the new batman adventures clearly based on "fear for sale", a post-crisis!jason story. so of course, I have some thoughts!
both share the premise that scarecrow has invented a new toxin that removes fear. the episode then deviates from the issue in several ways, for example with the choice of the targets: comics!scarecrow offered his drug to athletes, tnba!scarecrow went through a middleman who offered it to scaredy cats who wanted a leg up in life (btas had a plot about scarecrow using his classic fear toxin on athelets while dick was robin though, so I get why they wanted to switch things up). another difference is in how early bruce is dosed with the anti-fear toxin AND the way it affected him. the biggest one is jason's role versus timmy todd's, though.
as a sidenote before I get into the meat of it: this episode does also showcase the little ways in which they differ in personality. timmy todd fits the *idea* your average middle-class person would have of a street kid lol. not necessarily in a bad way, always, but to me it's telling that jason's academic enthusiasm and artistic inclinations seem nowhere to be found in timmy todd.
but let's get into it. in the comic, jason and bruce are at the racetrack and they help rescue a driver whose car was catching on fire (bruce goes for him, ordering a nervous jason to dose it with water). later jason is dosed with classic fear toxin (and sees a burning bruce disappointed in him) and gets kidnapped by scarecrow and used as bait. scarecrow has also dosed batman with the anti-fear toxin, hoping to see him destroy himself out of fearlessness, but obviously bruce pulls through via some impressive feats. the comic ends with this image that just. yeah we're gonna forget about the unintentional foreshadowing for a moment because OUCH.
detective comics #571
in the show, bruce gets dosed early on, and it makes him dangerous. it, specifically, removes his fear of killing. timmy todd, the only other bat in the episode, has to task himself with stopping bruce. and he's very proactive about it, vis a vis comics!jason's more passive role. and very effective! he ties up bruce, he doesn't fall for his trick when bruce pretends he's seen the error of his ways, frees himself from some cuffs in the *very brief* time he's subdued, and gives batman the antidote, stopping him from killing the scarecrow. bruce validates his choices at the end of the episode, telling him he did the right thing.
this is the first time I've seen some comics!tim in timmy todd, though it's two-fold. I think one half of it could be and probably was intentional, while I suspect the other half is a matter of the show's creators developing similar goals as comics!tim's writers in an organical manner.
the first half is this: "fear for sale" was telling a story about bruce as a father and caretaker, and about jason as his child and charge; "never fear" was following the idea of comics!tim as a jiminy cricket figure, someone who stops bruce from "crossing the line". the context is different (inner conflict vs. external influence), and timmy todd does it in a timmy todd way and not a tim drake way, because their personalities are notably different. but the idea is there.
the other half is, timmy todd, just like dc comics when they created robin!tim drake, had writers that wanted him to be more proactive, to more *independence* as a HERO than the role of robin afforded post-crisis!jason.
this, as I said, I don't think it was tnba's writers "grabbing" a trait from comics!tim. mainly because it was not a trait only afforded to tim, although he is who perfected it. batman and robin are a duo but, although I'm not an expert on this era, dick already left gotham and had his own team and his own adventures as robin, separate from bruce. and pre-crisis!jason was also more proactive in his role, insisting on his role as partner, etc.
it's curious because bruce has that infamous scene where he tells gordon to basically treat jason as an adult because of how his difficult life experiences had made him "mature", the comics at this time very much do not treat jason as an adult, imo. even later, when starlin comes with his own agenda, I would maintain that: he doesn't see jason as an innocent kid, but neither, obviously, as Batman's Partner with everthing that comes with it.
and just... it's definitely something I've felt before, but this episode makes me feel more than a little mournful for what could have been, you know? mournful for what jason could have been, had he been allowed to really mature into the role, and enjoyed the perks that came with it.

Nothing overly specific to post today aside from some rambles and a few pics of going on.
Rendered lard (5 total pints this week) and cut up the weeks worth of beef for the family
Also got into researching local beef farmers as that is next on our attempt to divest from what we want to see changed on the food system, it is definatly a rabbit hole of everything with that.
So far, for those curious where to start looking for places and people, so you can to remove yourself from big ag and cafo feed systems check out
đ±Craigslist and similar (Facebook too.) Be aware, you may need to know. Learn or be willing to help with or do the process of butcher, clean and process
đ±search engine, small grocers and local butcher shops.
đ±feed stores and occasionally pet/reptile stores. Feed stores will have a lot more localised or regional/state. Reptile stores has oddly been where I've made some egg sale/trade connections (I like to get crickets, worms and other insect goodies for my hens there)
đ±small scale fabric and sewing notion stores. Aside from finding sewers and other small crafter I've seen pig share flyers on a few boards.
đ±some cultural centers hold workshops or farmers markets.
I've not found a specific spot or place yet, but for now I'm looking to figure out what options would be best for us.
Not too much going on with the garden right now. Still been a bit to hot out to do much except maintain what I can (which as you can see, I'm not doing too well atm lol.)
I did some trimming of dead things this week, as well as a lot of grass pulling in the mint area. In the next month or so, there's intending to get some material to start planning extensions this coming winter/spring. As well as some stuff to be done in the back bit.
I did get around to 2 soap batches. This recipe is an almost castile style soap, which means it will take awhile to fully harden and cure.
This one's got ground oats and coffee grounds mixe din for an exfoliating, soothing bar.
We've got hummingbird friends regularly now, This makes 3 new species noticed in the last year.
The gila wood pecker, the peach cheeked lovebirds and now more than 1 hummingbird (this is the 3rd).
We've also had a hawk, bats, red breasted and gold breasted finches, collared doves to name a few regular visitors.
Don't worry, there is plans to add a birdbath or two as well as a few other sugar feeders for the hummers (though if the flower patch and herb expansion area works as we hope, that may not be necessary as it'll be a free flowering patch)
And I've been able to get into the office space and do some repairs on clothes and work on some jackets for the fall/winter. Thought I ahd zippers squirreled away that'd work, I do not. So for now it's a pause đŹ
Well, that's it for me today, I've got some lawncare to do, and procrastinating won't get it done faster, lol

No Better Place - Chapter 5
Summary: Javi and Cassidy go for a ride.
Word count: 1700+
âBored yet?â
Javi opened his eyes. Heâd been leaning back in his lawn chair, arms crossed, but definitely not napping. âJust communing with Buster,â he said. âHe gets me, donât you, buddy?â The gelding, who had been dozing off, simply swished his tail at a particularly annoying fly and flicked an ear when he heard his name.
Cassidy laughed. âYeah, you have so much in common,â she said. âYouâre both lazy, good for nothing, free loaders.â
Javi sat up. âHey! Iâm doing this as a favor to you,â he said. âAnd I brought the beer last week.â
âOne lousy six pack,â she scoffed.
âIt was the good shit,â Javi shot back. âNot that cheap crap you buy.â In the weeks since heâd started coming over to socialize Buster, theyâd fallen into a friendly banter, ending most days with a cold beer in the barn or on her back porch.
âWell, I have a mortgage to pay,â Cassidy replied. âIâm not living rent free in my dadâs house.â
Javi shook his head and flipped her the bird. Sheâd hit a bit too close to the bone with that last remark. Chucho had made it clear that Javi could stay as long as he liked, but he still felt like he was imposing.
âGet off your lazy ass and come for a ride with me,â Cassidy said. âI need to get some miles on Dawson before I can start advertising him for sale, but I also need to get Cricket out before she gets too fat.â
âIâm not much of a rider,â Javi protested. It was true. He knew how to ride, of course. His dad had insisted on it, but it had been years since heâd ridden more than just to get from point A to point B on the ranch, and then only if he couldnât easily drive one of the trucks.
âIâll put you on Cricket,â Cassidy said. âSheâs my babysitter horse. Iâve put little kids on her. I think youâll be okay.â
âOh, I know how to ride well enough,â Javi said. âI meant Iâm not used to riding for a long time.â
âAfraid youâll hurt your ass?â
âAfraid I wonât be able to walk tomorrow,â Javi admitted. âIâm not as young as I used to be.â
âYouâre not that old,â Cassidy said. âBut you are out of shape.â She reached down and poked his stomach. âLess beer and whiskey, more exercise. And stop smoking those cancer sticks.â
Javi batted her hand away. âDonât touch me,â he grumbled.
âJust get up and help me saddle the horses,â she said. Javi took a moment to admire the view as she walked away before he levered himself up out of the chair. He followed her into the barn and into the tack room at the end.
He whistled in admiration. âNice collection,â he said. There were close to a dozen saddles placed neatly on racks on the far wall. The wall opposite had pegs which held bridles and halters and other bits of tack.
âYeah, I like to have options,â Cassidy said. She ran her hand over the seat of a glossy black English style saddle. âWestern, jumping, dressage ⊠I used to have a sidesaddle, too, but I got a great offer to sell it to a historical reenactor.â She pulled a plain trail saddle off one of the racks and nodded to another one a few spaces over. âGrab that and follow me.â
They worked silently, except for a few quiet instructions from Cassidy, brushing the horses off and tacking them up. Dawson was a nondescript bay gelding with no white markings at all. He fidgeted as Cassidy worked with him. Cricket, on the other hand, was a pretty little buckskin mare with a white stripe down her face and impeccable ground manners.
âIâm serious about you riding Cricket,â Cassidy said as she checked the girths on both saddles. âSheâs got that nice, easy jog. Dawsonâs a real bone shaker. Your backside will thank me.â
âGlad to know you think about my backside so much,â Javi said. âIâm flattered.â
âGet your mind out of the gutter,â she replied, as she swung gracefully into the saddle on Dawsonâs back.
Javi chuckled and hoisted himself onto Cricketâs back. Cassidy led the way past the riding arena and to the beginnings of a trail that led out into the brush. She sat easily in the saddle, swaying with the horseâs movements. Javi tried to relax and imitate her, but it was hard to strike the right balance between following the horse and staying in control.
************************************
Cassidy turned in the saddle to check on Javi. âJesus Christ, man, relax,â she laughed. âGive her a loose rein and sit back on the cantle. She wonât bolt on you. Trust her. Cricketâs a good girl.â
She was sure Javi had narrowed his eyes behind his ubiquitous aviator sunglasses. She kept hoping heâd lose them somewhere; they reminded her of that cheesy show about the California highway patrol officers from the 70âs.
âLast time I trusted a horse, he took me through a barbed wire fence and dumped me in a patch of cactus,â Javi grumbled. âI like to be in control of my horse.â He lifted his chin at her in accusation. It was true that she was sitting halfway round in her saddle, one foot out of the stirrup, with the reins looped loosely around the saddle horn.
âIâm still in control,â she retorted. âI just donât have to rule with an iron hand.â She shifted her weight, cueing Dawson to stop, and he did. Javi pulled back on Cricketâs reins to keep her from walking into Dawsonâs butt. âSee!â Cassidy cried. âRight there. You hauled on her mouth. All she needs is for you to sit back in the saddle, drop your weight, open your legs a little.â She held up her hand to forestall the snide comment she knew he was dying to make. âYeah, I heard it. But itâs true. You donât need to be yanking on the reins. I donât cowboy my horses, and I donât charro my horses. Got it?â Dawson shifted nervously beneath her. She hadnât meant to raise her voice, but damn, men were such asses sometimes when it came to horses.
Javi nodded. âOkay, okay, Iâll try to be gentler,â he said. âBut in my defense, my dadâs horses arenât as well trained as this little lady.â He leaned forward to smooth down a section of Cricketâs mane that had flipped the wrong way, and Cassidy saw that he could be gentle if he wanted to be. She also wondered what it would feel like to have that hand smooth her own hair away from her neck and ⊠she shook her head. Focus, Cass, focus!
âAll right, as long as weâre on the same page,â she said. âCome on, letâs ride.â She nudged Dawson into a walk and then a trot. She hadnât been kidding when sheâd told Javi he was a bone shaker. It was nearly impossible to sit his trot, so she posted as best she could. She did take a glance back and saw that Javi was bouncing around in the saddle a bit, even with Cricketâs smooth Quarter Horse jog.
She slowed to a walk when they reached a wide, open section of grassland where the well defined trail theyâd been following broke into a braid of tracks. âBring her up alongside,â she said. âI want Dawson to get used to being next to other horses, not always single file.â
Javi let Cricket stride out until they had caught up. Dawson immediately pinned his ears. âHey, hey, none of that,â Cassidy chided him, taking a firmer grip on the reins. Cricket snorted and shook her head as if to say, Amateur.
They rode in silence for a while, no sound but the creaking of saddle leather, the jingling of bits, the thud of hooves, and the occasional snort as the horses blew dust from their noses. âThis is the life,â Cassidy said eventually. She dropped the reins and leaned back to rest her hands on Dawsonâs rump. âI could do this forever.â
Javi looked over at her, and she felt his eyes travel the length of her body. âI could watch it forever,â he said.
âYouâre disgusting,â she said, sitting back up properly. âBut you donât look so bad yourself, when youâre not trying to be all macho and in control.â She ran her own eyes over him, his long legs hanging loosely along Cricketâs sides, his hips moving gently with her strides, his huge hands lightly holding the leather reins. Yeah, he looked damned good.
Javi shrugged. âOkay, so we agree we both look hot in the saddle,â he said. âCan we head back now before I get a callus on my ass the size of Dallas?â
Cassidy laughed. âOh, weâre just getting started, Mr. Pena,â she said. âGiddy up!â She tapped her heels against Dawsonâs sides, urging him into a canter. Cricket didnât need any encouragement to join in; she loved to run.
âHey!â Javi yelped as Cricket lowered her head and lit out after Cassidy. âI wasnât ready!â
âYou snooze, you lose!â Cassidy cried. âYee haw!â She leaned forward and urged Dawson into a full on gallop. She heard Javi cursing behind her and knew that Cricket had kicked into overdrive. She was a sweet mare but had a competitive streak that would put a racehorse to shame. No one outran her. In just a few strides, sheâd caught Dawson and was pulling ahead. She flicked an ear at Javi but kept going. Cassidy laughed. âThatâs my girl. Show him whoâs boss!â
As soon as sheâd put a length or two between them, Cricket slowed her stride. Cassidy reined Dawson back into a canter, then to a trot, and finally a walk. He was blowing hard, but Cricket looked ready to go again.
âDamn, that was insane,â Javi said once the two horse were walking side by side again.
âNever underestimate a woman,â Cassidy said. âHuman or equine.â
Javi smiled, something she rarely got to see. âPoint taken,â he said. âNow, seriously, can we go home now? My ass is killing me.â

Prowldown Fic 2
1000 word count
Lockdown sees Prowl before the final battle in season three of TFA to help give him an edge in the upcoming battle.
Commissioned by @rules-and-protocol
a/n: Yes I'm still salty at cartoon network for crying about toy sales being in favor of the movies, why do you ask?
Citrus rating: Grapes
Content warnings: None
Silence fell in the deep wood. Springtime was known for its symphony in the night. Crickets, bats, and even the call of owls settled into an eerie quiet. Prowl watched, echoing the silence, at the hazy moon above. A storm would come. Soon.
Humans had multiple ways of foretelling the future. The silence of animals, the hazy moon, and clouds resembling fish scales are hints of rain to come. He found this history fascinating, but not enough to ease his apprehension.
Lockdown had requested to meet him. Alone. The message said it was urgent. But the wording felt off. The Bounty Hunter almost sounded scared. And with Ultra Magnus dead, the hammer stolen by Ratchet, and Megatron poised to attack, both mechs had plenty of reasons to be afraid.
And so the Cyber Ninja waited at quite the scenic spot. A cliff overlooking an ancient ravine. Or, what is a glacial scar? Prowl did not know the difference but appreciated it all the same. To witness the aftermath of an ancient war between forces of nature on this world, and how beautiful they became, gave him an odd sense of hope for Cybertron.
Prowl sighed quietly, rubbing at his tense neck cabling. He could feel his plating flutter at the relief. He had been holding himself stiff without realizing it.
"Still wearing Yoketrons helmet, I see." Lockdown's voice crawled up the Autobot's spinal strut. Swiftly turning, Prowl met Lockdown's glowing red optics in the dense wood behind him.
Prowl quickly became aware of how close he was to the cliff's edge. "What do you want, Lockdown?" he demanded, voice filled with disdain. "If you haven't noticed, we have our servos full already."
"And here you squeezed in time for little old me? I'm touched." He took a confident step forwards.
"Not another step!" Prowl snapped.
Lockdown froze in place, holding his arms out in a casual shrug. "Fair enough.""I won't repeat myself again. What do you want?" Lockdown's expression was unreadable. But, for a single moment, Prowl could swear he saw regret on the Bounty Hunter's faceplate. "Right down to business, I see," Lockdown grumbled. "We're buddies now, right?"
"No."
"C'mon, after all we've been through?" he leaned against a tree. "Anyway, you and I both know this conflict is coming to a head again." He paused. Lockdown swallowed hard, dismissing his rehearsed speech about how Prowl was too young to remember the years leading up to the last Autobot Decepticon war. Watching him tread the same ground he himself did all those years ago hurt more than he would let on. He wanted to help, wanted to save him, just this once. He wanted to ask, beg if he had to, for Prowl to abandon this fight and run away with him. It was easier than taking a side in a war no one would ever win. But all that melted away when he saw Prowl's expression, his determination to stick through this to the end. And he admired that. That kind of strength is rare to come by.
"You really believe in him that much, don't you?" Lockdown finally asked.
"Who?"
"Don't make me say it."
Prowl thought for a moment. "Optimus?"
Lockdown gave a slight nod. Glad he was far enough away to escape Prowls EM Field, and thus, able to hide his own field from him. "Kid really did temper his spinal struts on this mud ball. The first time we met, he could barely hold his own axe." he chuckled.
Prowl narrowed his optics, showing impatience.
"But being a good leader won't save you when it comes down to it."
"Did you come here just to talk about Optimus, or do you have a point?"
"I do--actually." Lockdown pulled out a bundle of weapons, and equipment. "Good intentions never win battles, especially battles where an Omega unit is involved." Lockdown tossed the bundle between them, allowing silence to once again claim the night air.
Prowls optics trailed from the bundle back to Lockdown. He wanted to yell, to tear him apart for making this about upgrades again. But that expression haunted him. Lockdown never acted without purpose. "Why are you helping us? Didn't Megatron pay you enough?"
"Let us just say you bots are a group I can get behind. Maybe he can change Cybertron for the better. Maybe he can't. But we won't know if all of you die before it's over. I know you're not used to being told this, but it's your choice this time, Prowl. Make it a good one."
Lockdown turned swiftly, disappearing in the dark. The fear of possibly losing Prowl had overcome him, and he could no longer keep his vocalizer in check.
Prowl reached out after the mech, but let him go. His attention fell to the upgrades Lockdown had left behind. Most of which he would not know what to do with. Odds and ends that maybe Ratchet could make sense of. But a small bag of inverters caught his attention. They were built for helping regulate energy flow, something that could be very useful in Processor over Matter manipulation.
The ninja sighed, grabbing this new gear and stowing it away. Nothing explosive, so he would be able to safely take it to someone who would know what these were, and how best to use them for the storm to come.

Future of Cricket Shops in Italy: What Lies Ahead
The future of cricket shops in Italy looks bright, fueled by the growing interest in the sport and a burgeoning community of players and fans. As more Italians become exposed to cricket through international tournaments, local leagues, and social media, the demand for cricket equipment is expected to rise.
One trend that could shape the future of cricket shops in Italy is the development of locally manufactured cricket gear. As the sport gains popularity, there may be opportunities for Italian companies to start producing cricket bats, balls, and protective gear domestically, reducing the reliance on imports and lowering the cost for consumers.
Another potential development is the expansion of womenâs cricket in Italy. While menâs leagues currently dominate the scene, there is a growing interest in promoting the sport among women. Cricket shops could play a crucial role in supporting this movement by offering gear specifically designed for female players and partnering with womenâs teams to provide sponsorship and equipment.
Additionally, the rise of Twenty20 (T20) cricket, a shorter and more fast-paced version of the game, is expected to attract a younger audience. Cricket shops that cater to the specific needs of T20 players, such as lightweight bats and innovative protective gear, will likely see an increase in sales.
Ultimately, the future of cricket shops in Italy is closely tied to the sportâs growth at the grassroots level. As more people pick up the bat and ball, these shops will continue to evolve, offering new products, services, and experiences that make cricket more accessible and enjoyable for all.

Cricket Apparel and Equipment: Market Opportunities and Challenges
The global cricket apparel and equipment market size is estimated to reach USD 2.39 billion in 2030, expanding at a CAGR of 3.7% from 2024 to 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. The growth of the market is driven by the increasing popularity of the sport beyond its traditional strongholds in countries like India, Australia, England, and Pakistan. Emerging markets such as the United States, Canada, and countries in Europe and Asia are witnessing a surge in participation. This increase is fueled by growing immigrant populations from cricket-playing nations and local initiatives to promote the sport, thus, driving the demand for cricket apparel & equipment.
Municipalities, sports authorities, and private entities are constructing new cricket grounds, upgrading existing facilities, and building dedicated training academies. These developments not only support professional leagues and international competitions but also encourage grassroots participation and talent development. The availability of well-maintained cricket grounds and training facilities enhances the overall cricketing experience, driving demand for high-quality apparel and equipment among players of all ages.
The emergence and global success of T20 cricket leagues, such as the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Big Bash League (BBL), have transformed the sport's landscape. T20 cricket's fast-paced format and entertainment value have attracted a new generation of fans and players. This format's popularity has spurred demand for specialized equipment designed for shorter matches, including lightweight bats for aggressive stroke play and specialized clothing that enhances agility and comfort during intense gameplay.
Furthermore, The proliferation of e-commerce platforms has expanded the accessibility of cricket apparel and equipment globally. Consumers can now purchase a wide range of products online, benefiting from competitive pricing, product reviews, and convenience. Traditional retail outlets, including sporting goods stores and specialty cricket shops, continue to play a vital role in showcasing and distributing cricket gear. This omni-channel approach enhances market reach and customer engagement, driving down the sales of cricket apparel & equipment during the forecast period.
Major players in the market include Adidas AG; Nike, Inc.; Puma SE; Gray-Nicolls Sports Ltd.; Gunn & Moore Limited; Kookaburra Sport Pty Ltd.; Sanspareils Greenlands (SG); Slazenger Limited; Spartan Sports International; Sareen Sports Industries (SS). Manufacturers are leveraging advanced materials such as carbon fiber, titanium, and composite blends to produce bats that offer superior power and control. Protective gear such as helmets, pads, and gloves incorporate lightweight yet durable materials to ensure optimal protection without compromising mobility. These technological advancements cater to the needs of professional cricketers as well as amateur players seeking to improve their game.
