The Africans who built Louisiana’s plantations were not just laborers—they were bearers of knowledge and culture.
Originating primarily from West and Central Africa, including the Wolof, Fulbe, Bambara, Mandingo, and many others, enslaved people brought expertise that was essential to the colony’s survival.
Their agricultural skills laid the foundation for Louisiana’s rice and indigo industries, transforming the region’s economy.
Most enslaved people in Louisiana came from Senegambia, near the Senegal and Gambia Rivers, where rice cultivation was a deeply ingrained part of their heritage.
But their contributions went far beyond labor. In the kitchens and quarters of the plantations, they preserved their cultures through food, traditions, music, and storytelling.
The creativity of these individuals were integral to the development of Creole culture, leaving an indelible mark on Louisiana’s history.

📢🇩🇲 Poem Alert!👇🏽📢 Title: Unique Treasure Let me tell you this, we look but rarely See, the beauty of a unique treasure. Have we appreciated her fairly? Are we proud of her and all her leisure? With a hurricane heart, she became my Poetry. Her name, an inkless poem. Her resiliency, a true source for high Inspiration, that pens ink unspoken. Tall are her mountains, reaching to the clouds Deep are her waters with wonders hidden. Her culture, buoyant concur and brings crowds, Ashore to venture in life forbidden. An extraordinary paradise. A haven to all, who wished to escape From vast hustles and bustles, peace advice. Truly a remarkable beauty shape. Diverse is its culture, unique is its Traditions. The people, so warm-hearted, Stirs you intensely to join and commits, To intriguing activities started. Unspoiled terrain features exotic views. Refreshing streams and rivers in excess, Serene cascades flow to pools of lush muse, 'long tropical scenic hikes coalesce. Past each viewpoint, a bit of history, Landmarks of historical structures that Gives a peculiar tale of mystery And presents a vision of hope elat. Let me tell you, the vast celebration Of kinfolks and freedom, weave a charming Moment. With positive generation, Visions of unity come so sparkling. Young Toya T wearing a jip or wob dwiyet, Dominica’s national costume. • The national women’s costume of Dominica takes two forms: the wob dwiyet and the jip. The wob dwiyet is comprised of a dress with long sleeves and a floor length skirt of madras cloth. A scarf is tied on the shoulders and the costume is complete with a flat headpiece called a tete case. Traditionally, the headpiece may be tied with up to four peaks, with the number of peaks signifying the availability of the woman for courtship: one for single, two for married, three for widowed or divorced, and four for accepting of all suitors. • The jip is a modified version of the wob dwiyet. Instead of long sleeves, the jip has a loose white blouse called a chemise décolleté, which is sometimes worn off the shoulders. The jip is complete with a headpiece and a petticoat covered by a madras skirt called a jip or jupe. • Happy 41st Dominica Independence! #dominica #dominicaindependence #creoleculture #wobdwiyet #caribbeanculture #caribbeanhistory #afrocaribbean #westindian #westindianculture (at Roseau, Dominica) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4aaTMPncYu/?igshid=1hwiktjcgadwh
