My great grandmother Gang Gang used to travel frequently. Her and Papa Charlie would pack up the car with food for the road and their things tucked away in this first release of Samsonite cases. Sometimes my mommy and auntie would roadtrip with them as little ones. I've been spending time visioning what her and her husband's freedom looked like in 1940s Texas. It was a type of freedom that was only possible because of their earnings. I also remember road tripping with my family as a little one, somehow knowing casually that some towns were not to be driven thru at night or to be considered for rest stops. Gang Gang built a life where her babies and future generations would have some known freedoms. Only acquiring a bit of debt in her later years. Our family needs only $4000 to honor her legacy and keep her home. *LINK IN BIO TO CONTRIBUTE* #BlackLegacy #BlackFreedom #CreoleHistory #Samsonite #SamsoniteLuggage #AntiqueLuggage #Donate #CommunityCare #Crowdsourcing https://www.instagram.com/p/B3Yo3arhPaM/?igshid=13f1pr0quxu3i

#Repost @jeremy.k.simien • • • • • • Would you believe me if I told you that this portrait was painted in 1880s Mexico? It was! Certain places, like Mexico, welcomed runaway slaves, freed men and women of African descent. In fact, Mexico outlawed slavery nearly 20 years before the United States did; made it illegal to record race on legal documents and refused to return runaway slaves to the U.S. Something to think about. #afromexican #creole #metis #runawayslave #undergroundrailroad #veracruz #nolahistory #blackhistory #afrocreole #treme #tampico #matamoros #brownsvilletx #mexicanhistory #creolehistory #freepeopleofcolor #BlackHistoryMonth https://www.instagram.com/p/B8c2U8AlXjU/?igshid=11teiklixamu3

Some gems from my great grandma, Gang Gang's home. The condition she kept her things, her home, and many items older than 100 years old is unreal. We lost her earlier this year at 99 and we are working to keep her home. She owned her home, but because of some recent remodeling before her passing, there's new debt. We need help to keep her home from being turned over to the city. Black property deserves to stay in Black families. We've had far too much taken away. **LINK IN BIO to contribute what you can** CashApp $AngelaRRichardson if you prefer to give directly. #Fundraising #Crowdsourcing #BlackLegacy #Texas #BlackLand #PreservingHistory #CreoleHistory https://www.instagram.com/p/B3UCzuNByZ8/?igshid=dvp7ikbulirk

@chesleyantoinette using photography and fiber arts to illuminate the power and beauty of the tignon, a headwrap historically used as a tool of oppression by the Spanish colonial government that was reclaimed and elevated by the free women of color who created and wore them. This pairing celebrates Louison Chastang, one of many property-owning, influential free women of color living on the Gulf Coast in mid-nineteenth century. #Tignon #FashionHistory #FashionExhibition #AmericanHistory #AfricanAmericanHistory #BlackHistory #BlackFashionHistory #DallasFashion #CreoleHistory #CreoleFashion https://www.instagram.com/p/BrDsnJUhe-R/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1prhgz57hjfec

Since it's Creole Heritage Month! Pictured above is The Free Man of color, Ernest Guillory Born in 1845 in St. Landry Parish (My 3x Great Grandfather). The document beside him was drafted on July 27, 1864 by Ernest's Grandfather, Evariste Guillory FMOC, The document calls for Habeas Corpus after Ernest and his cousin Louis Bello were wrongfully arrested by Confederate forces. The confederacy was attempting to loot cotton and supplies from their farms illegally. This document and story is significant because it is an example of how the Free People of color used the law to protect themselves and their interest. Despite the fact the FPOC (Gens de Couleur libre) could not vote, they still fought and used the law of the land to defend what was theirs! Though these people of African descent were victimized, they refused to be victims! The story of the Free People of color is one of Resistance, Persistence and Success! #untoldhistoryfpc #nolahistory #louisianahistory #creolesofcolor #creolehistory #slavehistory #freepeopleofcolor #blackhistory #americanhistory #untoldhistory @lastatemuseum #onlylouisianabeer https://www.instagram.com/p/Bq46GduhoXt/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=c130novm128m

I'm hoping to organize an exhibit soon highlighting this important group of people. The story of these Creoles (of color) is a missing chapter in the story of Louisiana. Please contribute by adding the hashtag #UntoldHistoryFPC to your Creole related material. #creolehistory #neworleanshistory #creolesofcolor #UntoldHistoryFPC #gensdecouleurlibres #freewomanofcolor #freemanofcolor #tignon #freepeopleofcolor @lastatemuseum https://www.instagram.com/p/Bq44Xv1hkrP/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=hhb7lu740hi0
