this is about cat fleas, disgustingly 🪳😞
ugh, my cats have managed to get fleas. I found one flea at the end of March, I thought, well you never get one flea on its own, so this must mean we have a budding flea problem and I’d better nip that in the bud. Must say, I’ve never given them flea treatment because they’ve never had them before, but now I’m wishing I’d done it all along as a preventative measure.
The next morning I went to Pets at Home and said, please give me the strongest flea medication I can get without going to the vet. (The dog already gets a vet-prescribed one called Credelio, which is expensive but it kills fleas/ticks/worms and he goes outside every day which is where the ticks are.) The assistant recommended Advantage – you apply it externally once a month and it’s supposed to make both your pets and your home a hostile environment to fleas. I’m sceptical about whether it’ll work, and the website says it might take a long time to clear the problem, but I’ve got to give it a try. (Treatments like this only work on adult fleas, not eggs or larvae, so you have to persist with treating several generations.) The assistant said that fleas are really bad everywhere at the moment. She was sweet, she asked me what weight my pussycats are and when I wasn’t sure, she brought me bags of kibble to hold and judge whether they were about as heavy as my pussycats. She kept calling them pussycats, which is a word people don’t tend to say any more but my mum used to say it.
I signed up for a repeat order where it arrives automatically once a month (or is it bi-monthly? Feels like it’s taking ages for dose number 2 to arrive). Quite pricey to treat all three cats but I suppose I don’t have kids, so it’s not like I’m buying school uniforms and swimming lessons like lots of people my age.
I stopped seeing fleas for a few weeks, but in the past day or so I’ve started seeing them again. Maybe they’ve just hatched. Susie is on my lap right now and I just found one crawling on her fur. They’re very difficult to squish because they’re so tiny and also they quickly jump away and vanish. She doesn’t seem to have any ill-effects yet – my childhood dog Sophie got them and she was scratching and nibbling at her bum and ended up with a lot of sore bald patches before my mum got them under control. Susie isn’t even scratching. Apart from that individual, I can’t find any more on her, but she’s so fluffy that it’s hard to tell. I’ve seen videos of rescue kittens getting washed in dish soap but I can’t imagine my adult cats putting up with a bath without scratching me to ribbons, and those kittens are visibly hoaching with bugs, we’re not that desperate yet.
I am furious to know that they’re in my room and in my carpet (apparently vacuuming is key) but I’m not going to banish my cats or stop touching them, even though I am massively insect-averse and this whole thing is so revolting to me. I feel sort of resigned to it, as long as it’s temporary, I can cope. I’ve put plain white sheets on my bed so that I can spot them. I’m flinching at every speck of dirt or lint that I see, and imagining them, like how you automatically feel itchy when people talk about headlice. But adult fleas that you can see are just 5% of the flea population, the rest of them are eggs and larvae in the carpet, grim but at least they’re not hopping about and biting you.
The dog could’ve carried them in, but I might have brought them home from school. There’s a particular family of children at school who always have fleas. In the holidays we had to get a bug bomb for the classroom, I don’t think it worked though.
Another interesting fact I’ve learned is that fleas are species specialists – cat fleas hang out on humans/dogs/rabbits and they do bite, but they can’t process anything except cat blood, so it kills them. I can’t wait for all the little bastards to die. A lifetime of cat-ownership and this is the first time I’ve had to deal with this particular issue, obviously my luck has just run out.

Bluebell!! As you know, I’m working with that tuxedo baby boy! I actually have a couple questions I’m hoping maybe you could answer…
Once he gets neutered, I’m concerned about his recovery and what I should do. Initially I was thinking about setting up a kennel with a bed + litter pan at least for a couple of nights while he heals, but when I asked the vet about his recovery, they said it really depends on the cat and that I may have to just let him back out if he really hates being inside. They mentioned I should try to get him a little used to being inside before the procedure, but he’s definitely full of worms and fleas, and we already have two cats and a dog here. I want to socialize them all eventually but I don’t want to risk the other animals getting worms right now. I’m hoping he can get dewormed while he’s at the vet. Would you happen to have any ideas that could work?
Second question- while he loves getting pets and even loves to be on my lap, sometimes he still swipes at my hands even if I’m not doing anything. He does NOT try to bite me. Could he just be over stimulated? Learning how to act around a human? What can I do to deter that without upsetting him? Or is it just something that might go away over time? (Also I’d like to follow this up with I thoroughly wash my hands after every interaction and I change my clothes if he sits on my lap).
anyways… if you’re able to help, i’d really appreciate it 🥺 i just want to get everything right.
I'm following the adventures of the very dignified boy and hoping he settles in quickly, ngl!
Cats usually recover from neuters pretty quick. It's a very, VERY small procedure (sorry to all toms reading this; your balls are not that impressive). There's usually not even a check back to get stitches taken out or anything. I do recommend crate rest, just to be sure he doesn't pull anything. It also helps to monitor how much he's eating, drinking, and eliminating.
so, the type of dewormers used are really going to depend on what kind of worms he's got. Since you've mentioned fleas, he's got tapeworms at the very least, which isn't as bad as it sounds. They're the easiest to get rid of, with just a single dose. Drontal is the typical form used, since it covers a larger spectrum of parasites than just pure praziquantel.
It's worth knowing that dewormers aren't JUST available in oral forms either. There are some that are transdermal, which is super handy when you're working with a cat who's not 100% used to human contact and might not be easy to pill.
The problem is, it's also SUPER easy to get contract them again, because their eggs are carried in the fleas. Cat grooms off an infected flea, eats it, and gets tapeworms all over again. So getting rid of tapeworms includes getting rid of the fleas, and the right flea medication depends on where you live.
I happen to live smack-dab in the middle of flea country. Fleas in my area have presented with a REALLY high resistance against most flea medications. The ones that still work in my area are selamectin (revolution, and revolution+; also a handy one since it takes out a lot of internal parasitic worms), spinosad (less effective in recent years, but includes comfortis), and spinetorem (cheristin; this is what I use on my personal cats, and it's also the active ingredient in Advantage XD). I've heard good things about bravecto and credelio, but haven't used those personally. Absolutely ask your vet what's working in your area right now.
I HIGHLY recommend getting a flea control that kills adults, larvae, and eggs. Right now, the best thing is to keep him on quarantine for a week or two, just in case he's got something nastier than parasites.
As far as his behavior, I'm guessing he's still learning how humans work. It's possible he's giving some sort of signal that's just too subtle for humans to catch. Just keep doing what you're doing and he'll figure out how to communicate with you. If he continues to swipe, you can work on finding a sort of comfortable compromise where, instead of sitting on you, he sits next to you in a little bed.
Good luck with the little guy!

FDA直接點名了上市多年的口服驅蟲藥商,包括Bravecto(一錠除)、NexGard(全能狗)、Simparica(寵愛食剋),以及 FDA剛核准的 Credelio(台灣未販售)。

Also realizing that despite a round of credelio and three capstars multiple baths and religious vacuuming my cat somehow still has fleas over two months later as I keep waking up to 5+ bites on one part of my body
Nothing finishes off a 36 hour fast like rapidly developing a mysterious cold and happening upon the recently mangled half eaten body of one of your beloved pets 🤙

Credelio is a newly formulated oral flea and tick treatment for dogs and puppies. It not only treats but effectively controls future parasite infestations. This oral chewable treatment comes in a palatable beef flavor, which makes it very easy to dose the dog.

howdy bluebell! do you have any tips for applying topical flea medicines? i always part the fur as much as i can but i can barely get to the skin. and then the liquid always gets into the fur and barely does anything. my cats have. a lot of fleas and i think it's because i'm not applying it proplerly
For an especially wriggly cat, I get a second person to hold the cat while I apply (or vice versa). We burrito the cat as much as possible and use a damp washcloth or paper towel to part the fur--- this makes the fur stick down and give better access to the skin. That usually does the trick.
even if you get a lot of the liquid on the fur, it should still affect the flea population. Are the topicals you're using still effective in your area? A lot of places are developing resistant fleas and it's becoming a huge issue. In my area, Frontline hasn't worked for years, and Advantage stopped working in 2019. I'm even seeing less efficacy from Cheristin, which is the stuff I usually use on my own cats. It might be worth trying another brand, if you can afford it.
I recommend asking your vet about Revolution+, Bravecto, or Credelio (chewable tablet, not a topical). Those seem to be working the best right now.

Where to Buy Flea Medication
https://www.centralparkpaws.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/519ikQESumL.jpg
This past weekend my husband and I were out walking the pups when we saw a kitten sitting behind a nursing home.
I walked down to see if it had tags so that I could get it back home, but there were no tags.
Long story short, the kitten was born near the nursing home and had no family.
Of course, I went back and scooped her up.
I brought her to the vet. She checked out okay, so I set out on a mission to find a home for the kitten.
Within hours, good friends of ours contacted me and said they would love to give her a home.
Buying Flea Medication Online
I was telling my friend that I had brought her into the vet where they gave me a free dose of Frontline to take care of any fleas.
I then asked if she wanted me to go back and grab more for her, but she declined, saying they always got their flea preventatives online because it is both cheaper and more convenient than running to the vet.
I had some questions about her online experiences since I traditionally picked up all of my pets’ medicine from our vet.
With three dogs and cat, any chance of saving money is always welcome!
I did some research on several online stores to see where I could get the best deals and to read what other customers were saying about their experience.
Here’s what I found.
What to Look for in Online Pharmacies
It is not that I didn’t know about vet meds being available online. I didn’t order online because I didn’t trust the stores.
Being an active member of the pet community and regularly reading a variety of pet articles, I have come upon more than a few reports pointing out the dangers of ordering online.
Of course, this was years ago when it first started becoming more popular.
Over time, things have changed in the regulations and safety of getting meds online.
After completing my research, I have found multiple reputable online pharmacies.
Here’s a list of things I was looking for regarding the purchase of medication from various websites.
I will note that not all of the following restrictions are applicable for flea preventatives (Some may focus on human, not pet, pharmacies).
Vet-VIPPS (Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites) accredited[1]
Check legitscript.com to see if they are a registered pharmacy[2]
Check to see if they are Safe Pharmacy[3] approved
Make sure they are a US-based pharmacy; different countries have different regulations on medications
Check the Better Business Bureau to see if they are in good standing
Make sure a prescription is required for prescription drugs
The reason to take caution when buying online is that online pharmacies that are not accredited have been known to provide wrong, ineffective, or out-of-date medications, all of which can put your dog at risk for medical complications.

Like I said, I have always gotten my flea medication from my vet.
They even offer an online store through Midwest Veterinary Supply, making things easy to order.
Their online ordering link directs you to three different websites:
Two are for farm animals and the third is for domestic pets.
The major downside to ordering through this site is that it’s isn’t as easy and straightforward as many of the other sites listed here.
You’ll probably have to get a prescription from your vet before you can order here, as well, which kinds of negates the convenience of ordering online.

Recommendations
The first thing I will say after completing my research is that I am absolutely blown away by the large variety of flea medications on the market.
“Wan” is Japanese for “woof,” so is this collar only effective against Japanese fleas?
I was familiar with several of the brands, but to be honest, the majority of the brands were new to me.
My first recommendation when shopping online for flea medications, whether it is over the counter or prescription, is to be sure that you find a reputable online store.
In my research, I was disturbed by the comments I found regarding those who exercised less caution, and their pups paid the price.
Overall, I think Chewy.com offers the most competitive pricing for pet medications, especially with auto-ship.
However, as you can see above, I did note three common flea medications and who had the best pricing for each.
The drawback of ordering medicine online is that there are two delays.
The first delay would be for the prescription to be verified, and the second would be for the shipping.
Neither delays would be something you would deal with when picking up flea medication from your vet.
Conclusion
Having three dogs is expensive, and I am all for saving money, but not at the expense of my dogs’ health.
However, after researching online shopping, I found that I could save over $100 a year on flea preventative and almost $900 a year on all other medications by buying their medication online!
My final thought is that it is well worth the time to shop around for flea medications.

The Dreaded Tick!
Have we really thought about ticks…really? These creepy little mites are everywhere! And their presence can linger longggggg after a bite. Ticks pose a large risk to pets and people because of the diseases they can transmit (Lyme, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, among so many others). Some of these nasty infections can lead to fevers, joint pain, kidney damage, immune mediated issues, and in severe cases hospitalization and death!
A tick’s main purpose in life is to survive. They have been around millions of years and have developed the ability to perpetuate and thrive. They quietly wait in waiting ‘questing’ to find their next victim. They can sense motion, vibrations, and even body odors!
Once on skin, they attach and start feeding on blood. Depending on the lifecycle and the type of tick, they may acquire disease, or even transmit while attached. In Georgia, some of the common ticks we worry about include the Lone Star Tick, American dog tick, and black legged tick.
Now, let’s think about our goals for ticks and how to keep them from infesting and infecting our beloved pets. Our goal- LIMIT BITES THAT CAN LEAD TO TRANSMISSION AND SPREAD OF DISEASE! Sounds easier said than done.
In regard to humans, there are many options to reduce our exposure to these pests. I urge you to visit the CDC Website for an exhaustive list of preventative measures!
For pets, the best ways we can achieve this is by proactive preventative measures. And the best method is PREVENTATIVE MEDICATIONS. We are lucky in the veterinary field that pharmaceutical companies have developed safe and effective products that are meant to decrease disease transmission and reduce infestations from these nasty critters. There are effective and safe oral options, topical options, and even collars.
At PHAH, we aim to provide a detailed plan for each pet that is specific for their needs and lifestyle. For that reason, there is no one size fits all approach to recommending products, but instead a discussion that allows us as a Veterinary Team, and you the client to figure out the best approach.
Some of the products we use and prescribe at PHAH include, but are not limited to:
Simparica Trio
Credelio
Revolution Plus
Bravecto
Please reach out to us with any questions or specific concerns you may have. Thank you and take care!
