May The Fourth ficlet

Mace knows that his attachment to the Republic is a problem, now that he has memories of becoming a soldier to defend the Republic, only to learn that the Republic has been rotten at the core for a long time.  

The Sith Lord being Chancellor was a pretty obvious sign that the Republic was failing.  

But now Mace has received a second chance, and he thinks he, Kit, Agen, and Saesee are taking full advantage of this second chance.  

Darth Sidious is dead, and Darth Plagueis, or Hego Damask is now in hiding, having had his life ruined by being publicly exposed as a Sith.  

Mace volunteered for this mission, which will keep him on Tannalor for over a decade specifically so he could let go of his attachment to the Republic.  

He looks over to the other Masters accompanying him on this mission; Shaak Ti, K’Kruhk, and the Master who trained him, T’ra Saa.  

The HT-2200 Medium Freighter is fully loaded with everything they will need for the next ten years, and now Mace is waiting with the other Masters for the Younglings to arrive.  

He knows Anakin Skywalker is still be vulnerable to the Sith, and to being corrupted by politicians, even at the Temple on Coruscant, so Anakin will have to be hidden somewhere the Sith won’t think to look.  

And the most remote Temple the Jedi have is on Tannalor.  

Finally, Crechemaster Tasmi Teeri walks into the hangar, carrying the youngest of the Initiates, one year old Barriss Offee.  Anakin and Darra are strapped into a repulsorlift stroller floating ahead of Tasmi since they are both two years old.  While the two oldest Initiates in the Clan, three year old Tru Veld and four year old Ferus Olin, are walking beside her.  

Since Anakin can’t know about the Prophecy until he is ready, and because he needs proper socialization with other children close in age to him, the official story for why these Younglings are going to be raised on Tannalor is that all five of the Younglings are targets of the Sith Lord Darth Plagueis, so they are being sent to a hidden Temple for their own safety.  

Mace sees Tasmi handing Barriss to Shaak, which makes Barriss begin to cry “Tasi! Tasi!”  That makes Anakin and Darra also start crying.

Mace knows this will be a very long trip to Tannalor.

Time travel au where all the Jedi wake up in Attack of the Clones after dying. The ones that died sooner just walk it off like it’s a weird dream. Everyone who died in order 66 is confused but maybe it’s a vision? Most of the inquisitors either panic or run to the nearest mind healer and burst into tears or trauma dump. Caleb Dume/Kanan is absolutely convinced he’s dead and this is the after life and no one can convince him otherwise. Obi-wan Kenobi sees smol Anakin and goes ‘shit just keeps happening huh’.

Ashoka Tano is disturbingly wise and knowledgeable for a youngling. Cal Kestis jumps up from class, yells “not today satan” stabs his crechemaster and jumps out the window (he thinks he got caught by the empire and drugged or something), he steals a ship and makes it all the way to Bogano and picks up BD-1 before Cordova find him getting his ass beat by local wildlife and drags him back to Coruscant. Cere is doing her best to comfort Jaro Tapal but he’s not reassured that Cal jumps out of windows all the time.

Plo Koon and Shaak Ti are scheming to get their sons back. Anakin is busy having a breakdown. Grogu just keeps asking for his Buir. Yoda, always ready for drama, let’s Caleb tell him all about his life and his family, asks what his padawan would want him to do. Caleb thinks about this for a minute and nods to himself. He builds a pipe bomb and duct tapes it to the bottom of Palpatines chair. And steals all the credits stashed in his desk.

Kit have you written a crèchemaster Obi-Wan AU before? If you haven’t, do you have any thoughts on this? I love your writing!

ooo this is a good question because i don't think i have written crechemaster obi-wan!!

i go back and forth on how good i think obi-wan is with kids because on one hand, he is shown to be at least passably good with kids in the clone wars series (numa (?) jumps out as an example) but on the other hand i also like the headcanon i've seen that obi-wan isn't great with children (based on all the younglings laughing at him in aotc and him being very awkward lmao) but he's great with skywalker younglings because they're part skywalker.

to get to crechemaster obi-wan, i think i can see him coming back from like....the year on mandalore with satine and feeling like if that's what it's going to feel like to be a jedi knight maybe he doesn't want to do that and he sort of finds his way to the creche instead. qui-gon is almost too eager to let him go. he doesn't think about it. it's an upward climb for him learning how to deal with younglings. explaining things that feel obvious to him doesn't come naturally to him but at the same time, he finds that he likes that moment that the younglings understand something and learn it for the first time. he learns patience, teaches them perseverance and also the basics of meditation. mitigates tantrums and retrieves younglings from the ceilings and tries to make time for coffee catch-ups with padawans who used to be initiates who used to be his younglings.

qui-gon takes on anakin as his padawan in the canon way (with a longer life expectancy though) and after a few months of not quite knowing what to do with him, he reaches out to crechemaster obi-wan for help. obi-wan says that anakin should probably spend time in the creche or the initiate halls before becoming a padawan, and qui-gon disregards that because it's too late for that. he's already a padawan. obi-wan suggests that perhaps qui-gon signs the boy up for some remedial how to be a part of the jedi order lessons. qui-gon says thanks for volunteering!

and then of course anakin develops a crush that never ever ever goes away. as a senior knight, he volunteers in the creche not because he's especially interested but because he finds obi-wan incredibly interesting, still after all these years. he turns down his knighting when qui-gon suggests it because young knights don't have to volunteer in the creche and he's unsure how else he can get obi-wan alone if they're not side by side in the fresher, washing baby-safe paint from fingerpainting class off of their arms and hands.

Here I am, exactly five months later 🫣 I swear I hadn't forgotten it, I was just uh... lacking inspiration. But I did it!

#47 There was something in the air that night

There was something in the air tonight. He supposed that was what victory felt like.

Dooku was dead. Grievous was dead. Sidious was dead. The CIS and the Republic had declared peace.

And the jedi were... well, 'letting lose' might have been a bit of an understatement. Anakin was one of the most sober person in the room and he was well past tipsy. He couldn't help but marvel at the sheer number of jedi there. It was more than he had seen in a single place since at least the beginning of the war, if not longer. Not that he could see everyone at once, but he could feel them. Master, knights and padawans (the older ones that were of drinking age at least, although he spotted a few that he was pretty sure shouldn't have been there) were all over the room of a thousands fountains, which had became the spontaneous and unanimous meeting point for all the jedi at the beginning of the evening.

This... gathering... hadn't been planned but since the day Palpatine -Sidious- had been discovered and defeated, more and more jedi had come home. All their leaders dead, the CIS had floundered, which every battalions had taken advantage of to secure local victories, and when no counterattacks had come they had all eventually been called back to Coruscant one by one while peace talks had started.

And today, the armistice had been signed, finally.

As soon as they had heard the news, jedi had started reaching out to each other, spreading the news, and all of them had eventually flocked here to share their joy together. Even the crechemasters and their clans had come at first, until alcohol had started appearing (Anakin suspected the shadows to be behind that) and the younglings had been gently ushered to bed.

There was a decent chance that the junior padawans were currently having their own party somewhere far from their masters, but Anakin wasn't about to snitch. He doubted anyone would bother stopping them anyway. For one thing, the end or the war was a pretty good reason to let the padawans have fun too, and for another thing, everybody was probably too drunk on either alcohol or joy to really care.

He turned to his left when he felt a presence there and was met with Obi-Wan's arched eyebrow.

"What are you doing brooding in a dark corner?"

Anakin scowled in exagerated offense. "I'm not brooding!"

Obi-Wan hummed a skeptical sound, then after a few seconds his lips curled in a smirk. "Well then I'm sure you wouldn't mind dancing with me."

Anakin felt his eyebrow reach his airline and threatened to go further. Dancing? With Obi-Wan?? Well... he couldn't very well say no, could he? Not without being accused of brooding. Again. And... its not like he didn't want to, it was just... unexpected. Right, that was it. And the odd feeling in his stomach must be because he over-indulge with the alcohol, nothing to do with the prospect of being up close and personal with Obi-Wan. Nothing at all.

"Sure master, let's dance."

Oh, who was he kidding, he was absolutely fucked.

They walked to the part of the room that was being used as a temporary dance floor -it was chosen mostly just because it was the biggest clearing in the room without a fountain in the middle- but the force must not be on his side because as soon as they reached the other dancers the music changed to something slow that there was no way of dancing more than an arms length away from his partner. Which was fine. Completely fine. He could slow dance in Obi-Wan's arms without making a fool of himself for sure. No problem at all.

Obi-Wan didn't seem to have any internal struggles about the situation and took Anakin by the waist like he had planned this all along -which, honestly, Anakin wouldn't bet his remaining arm that he hadn't. He let Obi-Wan hold his hand, and put the other one on the man's shoulder.

They started gently swaying like that, half of Anakin's brain focused on acting normal, the other half too busy cataloging how Obi-Wan felt against him, all warm and solid and soft, guiding him in small circles, the thumb of his other hand tracing patterns against the small of his back.

Oh force, Anakin was going to die. If spontaneous combustion hadn't been observed yet he would be the first reported case. He was sure some scientist would get a good paper out of it. Maybe Obi-Wan himself even, he was such a nerd at times.

He made the mistake of breathing in a little too deeply and instead of peace he got a lungfull of Obi-Wan's sent.

Mayday, mayday, the situation was fast becoming dire.

And just when he thought it couldn't get any worse (or any better, depending on your point of view) he made his worst mistake yet: he looked up, right into Obi-Wan's eyes. And he looked so gentle, so... fond.

Anakin swayed forward but caught himself in time. He awkwardly cleared his throat. Force, how long was this stupid song??

"You have no idea what is happening, do you?" Obi-Wan asked.

Anakin blinked dumbly at him.

Obi-Wan chuckled. "I think the entire council is going to be very mad at me if I don't clue you in and move this along. It's my understanding that they have gossiped about this for... much longer than is appropriate for a respectable body like them."

He was so lost. The council was gossiping? About... him and Obi-Wan??

He must really be particularly slow (he blamed the alcohol, although he knew he had drunk less than his master had. Or had he? He was starting to doubt that fact.) because Obi-Wan shook his head in fond disbelief and the hand that was holding Anakin close by the small of his back started going up and up, never leaving Anakin, until it reached the side of his neck, the thumb caressing his cheekbone.

And if Anakin thought he was going to pass out at that it had nothing on whatever happened in his head, stomach, toes, or other relevant and irrelevant parts of his body when Obi-Wan started using that hand to pull Anakin's face, towards his face. A face that included a mouth. Among other things. A mouth that he had a very hard time not focusing on.

And then said mouth was on his mouth and- oh. That was. Well. Hmm. He wasn't sure he had many braincells available to analyse the situation further than: OBI-WAN was KISSING HIM. K.I.S.S.I.N.G.

Well. Alright then. He could definitely get being that. He could even participate and- oh sweet force that was Obi-Wan's tongue. In his mouth.

Any braincell left was officially unavailable for the foreseeable future, please come back in 10 to 15 business days, goodbye and thank you.

He very vaguely heard a wolf whistle and something that sounded a lot like Master Windu but he couldn't be bothered enough to listen to what was going on around him. He had a master to kiss like his life depended on it after all.

Your Lightsaber is Different from Daddy’s 

“Your lightsaber is different from Daddy’s” said Leia. 

“How so?” said Crechemaster Maress.  The Zygerran Jedi expected an answer like “the weight” or “the shape of the hilt”. Anakin Skywalker was not a member of the Jedi Order anymore, but his service during the Clone Wars - and in eliminating Darth Sidious at the end of the war - was remembered with respect. 

“In the force, it feels different. Your crystal feels calm and happy, like it wants to be there. That’s not like daddy’s at all. When Daddy lets me hold his saber, the crystal inside feels like it’s screaming in pain.”

Well, that was an answer that made his fur stand on end.

Maress had a very bad feeling about this, but he kept his face calm as he asked, “what color is your daddy’s lightsaber?” He probably knew the answer to that question. 

“It’s red”. 

Well, that was an entirely expected answer.

For the second time in a generation, a Sith stood poised at the very heart of the republic.

Crechemaster Maress Kreel is a male Zygerran with a grey mackerel tabby pattern fur and green eyes. He was raised in the temple and would have been killed by Anakin in the canon universe. (He is based on one of my cats.)

For the asks about qui gon, would you want to talk about him in the last fic? Like his relationship w obi wan, how his hiding in the bedroom helped/hurt their relationship? Also what does he do for fun? When he’s not busy thinking 3 steps ahead of his friends and padawans haha

Hello hello anon!

For reference, they are referring to my latest fic, by the following acts committed, which is an AU in which Qui-Gon lives and Obi-Wan and Anakin are only 5 years apart in age. Qui-Gon does not become Anakin's master because he is training Obi-Wan, and Obi-Wan becomes a crechemaster.

At one point in the fic, Qui-Gon needs information from Obi-Wan that Obi-Wan isn't ready to give him and so ends up coming by that information through the means Anon mentions.

I should start out by saying that Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are used to playing mental chess with each other and with tricking each other into doing shit that's good for them.

Their relationship is comparable to a mother and daughter accusing the other of being ridiculous and needing to take care of themselves.

Qui-Gon, in this fic, feels guilty about having caused Obi-Wan suffering since his PTSD from Melida/Daan and epilepsy are less controlled than in other AUs. Because of that, Qui-Gon is faced with the evidence of his mistakes on the regular and because of that, he is generally overly supportive of most of Obi-Wan's decisions and over-forgiving of the bad ones.

He's an enabler, really, which Obi-Wan as a youth took advantage of, and which Obi-Wan of the present finds patronizing.

Obi-Wan himself is an anxious perfectionist who would rather eat his own fist than ask for help.

So when Obi-Wan does shit like keeping secrets about actual genocide in the hopes of not causing mass hysteria, Qui-Gon is forced to respond by being the devious, conniving mastermind that he is for the greater good.

Was Obi-Wan upset at being manipulated by his master? Did his master prey on Obi-Wan's attraction to Cody? Did Cody betray Obi-Wan by agreeing to this arrangement in full knowledge of the facts?

Yes.

But the point of that betrayal was to make Obi-Wan eat the words he threw at Anakin at this point in the fic:

“If it was, I would not betray my lover’s trust in me by kissing and telling, Anakin,” Obi-Wan says loftily, “If you want general advice in the area of romance, you might start by considering how the feelings of your partner might be damaged by your actions. There are some hurts that can never be repaired. Betrayal is among the greatest, and it is far more easily triggered than one might think. If I were in your shoes, I would explain to your dear captain that you have acted in accordance with the vows you took as a jedi, not in reaction to anything he did or did not do.”

Right after Obi-Wan says this, he is betrayed by Cody. But Cody was acting on Anakin's betrayal of Rex and a lingering betrayal from Obi-Wan earlier, who accused him of being a traitor (due to the chips).

So Qui-Gon's manipulation of Obi-Wan' in that moment was a relief overall because Obi-Wan realized that his master would have believed him from the start.

Essentially, this is normal for them. Is it healthy? No. But they're already enabling each other left and right, so they may as well take this in stride too.

For fun, this Qui-Gon tries to convince himself that he does NOT treat Rex like a padawan. He does not. He does not. He does NOT.

The twins have bodyguards. They have a whole company for each of them. They're Skywalkers/Kenobis/Tanos. They're as bad as their uncle/dad/aunt and need watching every single minute.

Ghost company follows Leia, Luke has Torrent but when it gets to much, they switch. Heck, the Bad Batch sometimes takes watch...If Hunter's feeling nice.

Hell, give the Padawans their battalions. Give the masters and knights their battalions. No Jedi is ever left alone. The Guard gets the Temple Guards. Fox has them all (GAR included) on a rotation within two minutes. The crechemasters are relaxing because the creche is full and the younglings are full of joy because of the new playmates.

The Alphas track down the wondering masters and refuse to leave. They are also dragged back to the main temple, they opened more because of the Vode, and given comms to "call in at least once every two months. We don't need more Jedi pretending they're dead."

Alpha 17 is the only one who sticks around the main temple. Mostly to bully Obi-Wan since Cody is wrapped around Leia's finger. At first 17 scoffs at Cody and Rex and etc for letting nat-born kids bully them until he meets Reva and Grogu. Then he gets laughed at since at least the others only have one youngling to watch out for.

The Jedi are just wondering what's going on. Anakin is pouting, Padme still died even getting actual care (a left over from Palpatine before he was taken out by Fox and a living Fives.), because Rex is ignoring him. No, Rex is not ignoring you, he's just busy keeping Luke from becoming too devilish with an angel's smile. Leia's already a lost cause but at least she listens to Cody... sometimes.

Ahsoka and Barriss are watched by Appo (Ahsoka actually told Rex to take Luke, she be fine with Jesse but Appo decided to take her since Jesse and Hardcase got Anakin. For now. Fives gets Anakin when he reveals himself. Then Jesse went to help back to Ahsoka.) (Kix technically has custody of all of them. Well him and Stiches, the 212th's main medic.) and Maker, Gree's SIC when Ahsoka came back. Neither are allowed anywhere near any dark siders for a long time. Actually they aren't allowed out of the temple unless it's a diplomatic mission. With their master/grandmaster only.

Anakin's pouting (to get back to him) so Fives decides he's taking Anakin out to find himself (blow something up, free slaves, etc) while the twins are placed in the creche for a month or so to give Ghost and Torrent some rest. Now granted it was only supposed to Fives, Jesse, Hardcase, and Kix (they needed a medic and Kix overheard and said he was coming.) BUT Obi-Wan felt Anakin's happiness and confronted him about it and then decided he's going along. Which meant Wooley was going, which meant Longshot told Boil, who told Waxer, who told Cody, who told Rex, who decided he was going also.

Cody sighed and ordered Ghost and Torrent to suit up. They were all going since they're Generals WILL get in trouble and yes, Ahsoka, you may come. Heck, let's just let anyone who wants to come, come. So all of the knights and half the masters end up going. They were going to take only one Venator Destroyer but with so many coming they ended up taking about half the fleet.

Before anyone asks the Vode own the ships and have them in storage. So they say. In actuality the Venator Destroyers are stripped of all indentible features on the outside and are used to clear out the main temple. The main temple which is now just gone. Surprising Coruscant who doesn't know what happened (when the last of their people were on the Destroyers, the temple vanished. It showed up again when they decided on the main planet for the Jedi.

So while the twins and younger Padawans, that aren't 15/16, are watched over by the crechemasters and the Vode that stayed behind, the rest that wanted to go on a spree freeing slaves and just going back to being Jedi. It relaxes everyone and while the Vode still follow and protect their Jedi, they do let them out and about without them... sometimes. (Feemor and Rael are the only ones in the lineage that can and do leave without an escort. No one else in the lineage can claim that. Though even they sometimes need to be watched.)

Yes, the twins see Padme's family but they're closer to their aliit. They try but since they're both force sensitive, and not hiding it for years, the twins can tell that it hurts the Naberrie's to see them (Leia might look like Padme but Luke has her compassion and both have even more traits of Padme) so it's just...easier to only see them once a year and then every couple years. Even Anakin isn't well received since the Naberrie's blame Anakin for Padme's death (Anakin blames himself for the longest time until his therapist finally gets through to him. It was a combination.) even though it was proven to be Palpatine...it's just easier to stay with the aliit.

This started with me just wanting to give Luke and Leia their aliit and dang, I went a lot more than I thought I would. Oh well.

reset #647 - ahsoka says fuck it and steals them away so neither of them become Jedi; she decides they both hate when people tell them what to do so she arranges a marriage between street rat anakin and prince obi-wan a la aladdin via several mindtricks of officials to make them think anakin comes from wealth; at first they hate each other but then galactic war breaks out and obi-wan calls for anakin to shelter on stewjon with him as his spouse to be. they fuck within the first 2 nights and are so WEIRD about each other afterwards that ahsoka doesn't hesitate to press the reset button

reset #3952 - master skywalker & padawan kenobi. weird about each other from the beginning. WEIRDER as time goes on, aging like a fine wine. padawan kenobi stubs his toe on a mission once and master skywalker picks him up and carries him around for 16 hours. ahsoka counted. then ahsoka reset that fucking mess

reset #450 - Anakin does not become a Jedi. He becomes a smuggler for a bit but eventually settles onto Coruscant. Ahsoka is on edge but there are billions of people on Coruscant. It's fine. Ahsoka's just saving them all from embarrassment and pain by just. fucking. hitting the reset button.

What I've Read Piranesi by Susanna Clarke - Xing Book Club - I adored this - like Tamsyn Muir's Nona the Ninth, this is written from the POV of a character who has the least information about where he is and how he got there, and the novel is largely about him finding out what happened. This is about a haunted house, maybe, from the view point of the living man doing the haunting, or maybe a labyrinth from the view of the minotaur. The atmospheric descriptions of the vast and impossible structure put me in mind of descriptions of hikers talking about walking great swaths of a trail and getting to directly experience their own minds paying attention to minute details of the world around them. I have heard it compared to House of Leaves, which seems somewhat fair - they have both have an epistolary style and a focus on an impossible space - but Piranesi is far gentler. I really, really enjoyed it - read it in a day - and I'm a bit sad I can't sum it up better! The mere plot of the thing doesn't really live up to the experience.

What I'm Reading True Colors - Karen Traviss - 23% - static - This is a Star Wars "Legends" novel that builds out a lot of the Mandalorian culture by focusing on the military fiction adventures of a subset of clone commandos who were raised and trained by one Mandalorian trainer in particular. There's a bunch of awkward stuff in this particular novel around a pregnancy and some real patriarchal BS, which is why I'm slow with it. But it's good background for my "Clones are Fun, Actually" reading.

A Restless Truth - Freya Marske - 55% - This is a fun fantasy with ship-board mystery and a sapphic romance that is both sweet and quite sexy. The first book in this trilogy was a delight and this is also adorable. I started this about three days ago and I have been blitzing thru.

Too Like The Lightning - Ada Palmer - A re-read bc a couple of my friends are starting it. It's a future mystery with a writing style like a 18th century novel, all breathless and Englightnment that I really enjoy.

This is a nonfiction theory book that is referred to in many of the horror-focused sources that we have previously read. The Gothic A Very Short Introduction - After the last reading we did kind of didn't get into what The Gothic is in literature, I figured that this might be a good little supplemental piece.
