the whiplash from seeing my previous boss in the media with articles, a book deal and podcasts about how you need to pay your employees well and how ridiculous it is to expect people to be satisfied with having a pool table and free fruit and pastries in the office; all while not paying me one eurocent over the absolute required minimum for my role when I worked for her, and adding responsibilities to my function every month without pay increase 'because theses tasks weren't relevant when we hired you so we didn't discuss them'.
I've grown as a person since then but I doubt she has.

Great campaigns are built on great marketing
I just came across this case study on GSD&M's "Don't Mess With Texas" anti-litter campaign that started in 1986.
Excellent execution of marketing fundamentals – targeting, audience research, media – led to a great campaign that changed behavior and saved taxpayers money.
A highlight from the case study: when the client in the Texas Department of Transportation’s communications office showed the first commercial to her superiors, "many in the room remarked that they did not like it. Her response? 'Good! You’re not the target audience!'"
While the campaign tried lots of different approaches to keep things fresh over the years, including humor with athletes, like a major league pitcher and an NFL quarterback, I think the campaign was best when it used well-known Texas music artists.

Design rationale
Kill Your Darlings (KYD) is an Australian literary and cultural magazine. A concern within the literary magazine industry is the decline in relevance and readership due to the transition from traditional media to digital content. More specifically, audiences expect immediate access to digestible content, and the proliferation of alternative content mediums has created a culture of consumption driven by quantity, making it challenging for literary magazines to capture attention. As such, KYD should implement an ad campaign that positions the magazine as an enriching alternative to other content formats and promotes slow reading, critical thinking, and creativity over instant gratification
The KYD campaign will strategically draw inspiration from their company name—a homage to a quote from American writer William Faulkner. This quote means writers should discard beloved yet unnecessary elements to enhance their stories. Mirroring this metaphor, the campaign will convey the notion of eliminating the noise of digital culture and encourage thoughtful engagement and creativity. Slogans such as “Kill Your Scrolling” or " Kill the Noise” resonate with the ethos of KYD and act as calls to action, urging individuals to consider other forms of content outside of today's fast-paced digital landscape. In doing so, the campaign aligns with KYD’s narrative to foster a community of thoughtful and engaged readers and writers. Regarding visual design, to harmonise with KYD's established brand identity, the campaign's visual style will be designed using the magazine's signature elements. The brand's clean aesthetic, characterised by the colours yellow, black, and white, will be utilised in the campaign's visuals, ensuring a connection to KYD's brand identity. The proposed solution will also incorporate the distinctive KYD font, characterised by its sign painter style, alongside a complementary serif font, which the company often employs for various types of signage.
