Chess Life: Each player must have at least one game of chess with another player per session. Each person who either loses or draws loses a life (of which everyone starts with eight). If you're the boogeyman, winning a game gives you a life AND takes one away from the loser, but losing a game takes TWO lives from you. Anyone can play chess with anyone else no matter their color, and piece color is decided by coin flip. If you don't play chess with someone at least once per session, you're out.

As for the plot twist, games involving Reds are crazyhouse chess.

Looked up crazy-house chess and I'm already incredibly confused... and concerned for those poor red names /lh

love chess in general, not just playing/winning because on one hand it's a battle game, a strategy game with a long history. All these academic, very serious connotations, the tournament formalwear, calculations and a duel over squares. There's no inherent advantage, we all see the same board, may the better player win. Old clubs like the Mechanics' Institute, nice pawn structures that are gorgeous. the immortal game, looking through the books of the greats that game before. chess is beautiful.

But then you have playing bullet for hours in the middle of the night, stuff like the bongcloud opening (also the crab opening, the joke opening of choice at the club I attend sometimes lmao), the most offbrand lingo. Anarchychess and, uh. scandals that are probably somewhat rare in nature in other sports. (shout out to niemann lol that was a unique one). streams and atomic chess and possibly somewhat out of pocket but also hilarious memes. bughouse and crazyhouse and chessboxing. drama of varying stakes and the viih-sou gambit. all of it, stupid and hilarious and fun and amazing.

I think a lot of people sorta ignore the second part. chess is cool but it's not just 'insert-academia aesthetic' or 'old money' (despite what tiktok seems to think). Because yeah, chess isn't super easy (unless you're Magnus or something) but it's not stuffy. That doesn't make it easier to win, or make it take less work (I genuinely have no idea how active GMs do it), but the stereotypes make it sound like something it isn't always.

The big red letters on the side of this unique house in Salem, Illinois, remind us that the town is the birthplace of both the G.I. Bill and William Jennings Bryan. (What, no mention of Miracle Whip?) I think one of my favorite things about Salem is that it's the home of this house. It's supposedly occupied by "Decker's Custom Wood-Works," the Googling of which will get you nowhere. It's no surprise, though, that a past or present occupant has an interest in doing highly, um, customized things with wood. And other materials.
