All the Dennis women.
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone
Silence the pianos and with the muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message “Betty’s dead”
Put crepe bows round the white necks of public doves
Let the traffic policemen wear black gloves
The stars are not wanted now, put out every one
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun
Pour away the oceans and sweep up the wood
Mum, granny, great-granny’s gone, as we always knew she would.
Well this is weird, isn’t it? As you know Betty didn’t leave extensive funeral instructions or, indeed, hardly any instructions at all. In fact, she was much more specific about what she didn’t want. She’d bemoan the waste of a penny needlessly spent or the value of a penny saved and was aghast at the expenditure at dad’s funeral. So here we are, thanks for coming, to send her on her way as best we can. If Sainsbury’s did own brand funerals I’m sure she would have had one.
The last five years have been a torrid time as mum’s deterioration into a dementia fog worsened. But let’s not define mum by the last five years, she was much more than that, and find some happier times to remember her by.
She certainly had her airs and graces but loved making mischief, she loved bossing dad about, she wasn’t averse to a bit of irreverence. She tried to poison me, you know. Twice. On a visit to Sleaford she got Billy and Martha to help her make a crumble, with a purple crayon in it. When that didn’t work she tried again with a dismembered leg from one of Martha’s dolls. Famous in her kitchen for her Dundee cakes and my favourite rock solid, lumpy lemon meringue pie. She loved picnics and awful hats, she loved anything colourful, she loved her garden. Most of all she loved all her children, grandchildren, husbands wives and partners and was overjoyed to meet her great-grandchildren although she would wail “All boys, all boys, you would think one of them could have produced a girl!!” Martha/Vic/Amy, be warned. I think she loved the smallest children best, maybe something of the teacher in her. She loved it when the latest newborn grandson was plonked in her lap.
She loved her garden. There was a time when she could go round the garden and give you the Latin name to every shrub and flower. In her later years she loved to be driven along the front at Broughty Ferry, have a walk amongst the Rock Garden and pause for a moment at a bench in the sun. This would usually involve engaging some a hapless stranger in conversation too. Was it only last year that most of the family met at the little cafe there on her birthday? As a child I remember days out to Stately Homes or formal gardens and being put out of the car with instructions not to get in a mess. Of course, within minutes Dave would have splashed in a puddle, I’d stand in a cow pat and Liz would be perfect. I’ve a photo of mum and dad having a countryside picnic somewhere – dad dressed down for the occasion in his blazer, shirt and tie and mum in a white coat and court shoes.
She had green fingers. She could taking a cutting, stick it in a pot of garden mud and, hey presto, nine times out of ten it would flourish and bloom. Sue and I took a couple of tough, hardy Scottish rhubarb roots out of her garden to replant in Newark. How hard can it be to grow rhubarb? I’ll tell you. A few spindly stalks but mostly nothing, nada, zilch. Thanks mum for not passing on that gene.
We were asked if we wanted mum’s ashes. Dave and Liz said No, I said an immediate Yes. Of course, mum had to die sometime but I didn’t want her to go in the winter when the ground is hard and the plants are dead. I’m glad she went in the spring when the garden is coming back to life. So, I’m going to take mum’s ashes and sprinkle them on our vegetable patch and she can encourage new life and new things to grow. Mum will eventually get back to England and this year we’re going to have a bumper crop of Betty Tatties, Betty Beans and Betty Berries.
When we were clearing out Dad’s study I found a little booklet of poems. I’ll read one and then, as per mum’s wishes, we’ll have the lord’s prayer, then there will be a piece of music while Betty leaves us. Mum came to Scotland in 1964 and often said that she hadn’t had a decent green vegetable or felt properly warm since. Well mum, you’re going to be as hot as you’ve ever been in about an hour’s time I can assure you.
Do you feel downhearted or in need of friendly cheer
Come with me I’ll show you one who’ll lend a listening ear
Come with me to Betty’s for a cup of tea.
Maybe sometimes down a bit but hardly ever out
The kettle can soon be on, steam bubbling from the spout
Come along to Betty’s for a cup of tea.
Find the tea refreshing, with shortbread as a treat
Come and talk of family fun and fellowship so sweet
Come along to Betty’s, please say you’ll come with me
Yeah, let’s go round to Betty’s for a cup of tea.
Now the lord’s prayer, which we’ll do in silence. Many years ago I was at an RAF rugby player’s funeral. All blokes uncomfortable and not sure what to do. The vicar introduced it like this. If you don’t know how to pray think of it as a scrum. Prayer is making sense of the turmoil, get hold of the ball, hang on to it briefly then pass it out down the line. We’ll just have a minute now while we say our own private goodbye to Betty.
OK, Betty’s going to leave us now to a favourite tune. When you hear it I hope you’ll know what to do. Mum would love it. (Morecambe and Wise – Bring me Sunshine).

I was tagged by @overworkedunderwhelmed and totally forgot about this so here it is, better late than never.
🎀 - Are you named after someone? *facepalms* Yes. My dad is a huge comic book fan and has the largest collection in the UK. I’m Kara because I’m named after Supergirl. My brother is called Kal, after Superman. True story.
🎀 - When was the last time you cried? 20 minutes ago? My back and hips are being very difficult today and I over reached and had a little cry over the pain.
🎀 - Do you like your handwriting? I don’t really feel strongly about it at all. It’s tiny though. I get 20 words to a line.
🎀 - What is your favourite lunch meat? Uh, I dunno. Southern friend chicken roll maybe.
🎀 - Do you have kids? A seven year old daughter.
🎀 - If you were a different person, would you be friends with you? That’s...kinda a loaded question. If I was a different person would I have anything in common with me? Would I be a nice person who liked me or some kind of nasty person who looked down on me? I dunno how to answer that.
🎀 - Do you use sarcasm? Who, me!? Never! [/sarcasm]
🎀 - Do you still have your tonsils? Yup
🎀 - Would you bungee jump? With my anxiety!?
🎀 - What’s your favorite cereal? I don’t really eat breakfast so I don’t really have a favourite.
🎀 - Do you untie your shoes when you take them off? I hardly ever wear laced shoes but when I do I tend to need to untie them ‘coz they’re too tight otherwise.
🎀 - Do you think you’re a strong person? Physically? Not really. Mentally? Emotionally? I struggle but I’m still here so I guess I shoulder more than most and still get by. That takes strength I think.
🎀 - What’s your favorite ice cream? Extra creamy vanilla.
🎀 - What’s the first thing you notice about someone? Hair. It’s my thing to have exciting hair so I look at other people’s too.
🎀 - What’s your least favorite physical thing about yourself? The constant pain in my back and hips.
🎀 - What color trousers and shoes are you wearing right now? I have on black leggins and I’m barefoot right now.
🎀 - What are you listening to right now? I’m visiting my mum and dad so they have Mamas & the Papas on
🎀 - If you were a crayon, what color would you be? PURPLE. My life is purple.
🎀 - Favorite smell? Mango scented body products.
🎀 - Who was the last person you talked to on the phone? A woman from work.
🎀 - Favorite sport to watch?
🎀 - Hair color? Right now? Pinkish purple. Really, really bright pinkish purple.
🎀 - Eye color? Blue
🎀 - Do you wear contacts? No, I hate them. But I do wear specs.
🎀 - Favorite food? PIZZA!
🎀 - Scary movies or comedy? I used to love scary movies but they just don’t do it for me anymore. But I still love comedy.
🎀 - Last movie you watched? Deadpool.
🎀 - What color shirt are you wearing? It’s a dress and it’s a purple coloured flower print.
🎀 - Summer or Winter? Summer. I don’t cope well in the cold and our Summers usually aren’t that hot.
🎀 - Hugs or kisses? Hugs. Definitiely hugs.
🎀 - Book you’re currently reading? Nothing really. I’m refreshing my memory of Deathnote for comic club though.
🎀 - Who do you miss right now? No one. I’ve got my daughter, and I’ve seen all my friends and close family recently.
🎀 - What’s on your mouse pad? It’s a track pad so I don’t have a mouse, never mind a mouse-pad.
🎀 - What’s the last tv program you watched? iZombie.
🎀 - What is the best sound? I dunno. The sound of someone cleaning my house for me?

Chelsy Davy: 8 Things to Know About Prince Harry's On- and Off-Again Ex-Girlfriend
Long before Prince Harry got engaged to American actress Meghan Markle, there was Zimbabwean jeweler Chelsy Davy. She met Harry in 2004, but the couple’s on-and-off seven-year relationship officially ended in 2011.
Davy, though, told the Sunday Times in 2016 the two would “always be good friends,” and it seems Harry and his 32-year-old ex are still on good terms: She is rumored to have received an invite to the forthcoming regal ceremony. (Before their breakup, Davy and Harry attended Prince William and Kate Middleton’s 2011 wedding together.) Come May 19, we’ll see if Davy will indeed be on hand to toast to Harry’s happily ever after.
In the meantime, here’s the scoop on Davy, from her safari upbringing to the intense media mania that severed her romantic ties with the prince:
1. That time monkeys stole Davy’s crayons
Growing up on a farm in Zimbabwe, Davy told the Times she hung around an orphaned pet hyena, and once a “very dangerous” boomslang snake the length of a man landed on her head. Of course, you’d expect nothing less from a young girl whose millionaire safari operator of a father, Charles Davy, raised her on 1,300 square miles of African savannah, with giraffes, lions and more wildlife around her. “At my preschool there were monkeys everywhere,” she recalled, “stealing your crayons.”
2. Davy’s move to England, where she met Harry
A far cry from Zimbabwe, Davy briefly attended Cheltenham College, a girls’ public boarding school in the southwest English town, before switching to Stowe School, a selective independent boarding school in Buckinghamshire, all the while feeling maladjusted -- like “Crocodile Dundee, with all my snakes,” she told the Times.
“I'd never worn makeup and suddenly everyone was in makeup,” she added. “People were like: ‘Who is this weirdo from Zimbabwe?’ But I made some fabulous friends.” Among them: Prince Harry, with whom she first hit it off in early 2004.
3. Davy’s lack of model ambitions
Contrary to popular belief, the blonde beauty didn't have her mind set on a modeling career. In the same Times interview, Davy debunked that rumor, stating, “That’s a terrible fiction.” In fact, she told Country and Town House that from a very young age, she was inspired by the film A Few Good Men to pursue a career in law.
4. Instead, Davy became a lawyer
Though she says the media focused on her party-girl antics with Prince Harry more than her day-to-day life as an academic, Davy proved she was more than meets the eye when she got her law degree at the University of Leeds. (She earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Cape Town.) Following school, Davy joined Allen & Overy, an elite London-based law firm.
“They can be forgiven for not knowing I was working really hard, I didn’t shout about it,” she told the Times, referring to the paps. “If you go out once, they take a picture, but they don’t take a picture of you going to work every morning -- it’s of you falling out of a nightclub at 4 a.m.”
5. Law, however, was no match for jewelry-making
In 2014, she abandoned a career in law to pursue self-directed endeavors. After obtaining a gemology diploma from the Gemological Institute of America, Davy launched a luxury African jewelry line called Aya, which honors her deep connection to her native soil, "from emeralds in Zambia to rubies in Mozambique and tanzanites in Tanzania," as the jeweler's official site reads.
Aya in Austin 🤠 Thank you @bygeorgeaustin for having us! #AyainAustin #ayaafrica #finejewellery #finejewelry 💎

6. Davy was held at gunpoint in 2006
In a terrifying turn of events at a South African bar in Cape Town, where Davy and a friend were celebrating having finished their dissertations, a gunman lunged at their table. “He put a gun to my head," she recalled to the Times. “They frogmarched us into the kitchen, made us all lie down, patted us down for valuables, said: ‘The first person to look up we’re going to shoot.’ I was holding my friend’s hand, we were both shaking.”
7. Being in the spotlight was, well, a royal pain
Davy described being chased by the paps during her romance with Prince Harry as “crazy and scary and uncomfortable.”
“I found it very difficult when it was bad,” she confessed to the Times. “I couldn’t cope. I was young, I was trying to be a normal kid and it was horrible.” Seeking to escape the spotlight, the media-shy entrepreneur decided to end things with Harry. “Now it's calm, now it’s fine.”
Responding to the newspaper's inquiry if it's possible for a person with an everyday career to be romantic with a royal, Davy said, “I don’t know, but I think that some people are definitely better at it than others.”
8. Now, Davy enjoys roaming Africa

It's been a long time, we shouldn't've left you... The 2012-13 term was a great time to be visiting The Reading Rooms on a Thursday. From fresh new residents and breaking acts like Sophie (Numbers) and Bones & Money (Tuff Wax) to a random appearance from Jackmaster and the customary craziness from Erol Alkan. So to restart the school-night sessions in the right fashion we've roped in LuckyMe family member Dema, a man who knows a thing or two about rocking a Thursday night crowd having previously run his own Freakmoves night at Glasgow Art School for seven years, the first place to host flourishing homegrown talent like Hudson Mohawke & Rustie. After a spell in Berlin focusing on his own productions Dema can now be found spinning regularly at some of the best parties in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Expect the unexpected as he'll be bringing a bag full of party starters which could include anything from Hip Hop & Grime, to Funk, Garage & other genre-defying club bangers. Support comes from the always on point Vinyl Matt & Peem with visuals provided by Reading Rooms stalwart DUNC4N. - - - LuckyMe www.thisisluckyme.com/music/dema/ "Dema ran a packed rap night back in the early noughties at Glasgow School of Art and first put on Hud Mo, Rustie, and Heralds of Change. He was hella supportive and nurturing of us guys in the early days and taught us a lot about doing and chopping samples. The more and more we all played together the more his music became this snarling toughened up club music. He can kill any show in any venue and despite his veteran status he loves what he does to this day. His music took another turn to the electronic after a spell in Berlin, but now he’s moved back to the mecca of Glasgow – studying at the art school and working on new shit every day. Watch this space as move towards a record from this guy."
