POM POM KILLER OF MASCOT GAMES VOL 4 #1: RETURN OF THE KILLER MASCOT!!!
Who is Pom Pom:
Pom Pom was originally going to be the mascot character to the arcade game 'Pom Pom Panic'. During the development of Pom Pom, her code as a protagonist became so well advanced she became conscious early on and self aware as she saw her creators develop and modify her game. One day however, the company funding the creation of Pom Pom Panic had second thoughts on the concept as they didn't see the design at first and claimed every single part of it was too 'bizarre' to go on. Her game was cancelled, and her arcade cabinet started to corrode and somehow adapt viruses- somehow raining all the time now and corroding most living/animated elements except herself. This drove her mad, having to suffer for other's mistakes. Resentful on promises being taken back, Pom Pom decided to break from her world and set the record 'straight' by applying the same logic to other mascots Pom Pom deems 'more bizarre' than her (she has bad judgement skills) and thus is making herself the only living mascot players can choose from.

Jack Kaplan could never forgive his parents for naming him Jack. Always running a head above the crowd, Jack was called “The Beanstalk” most of his way through grade school. Growing up in Economy, Pennsylvania; like all the Kaplans had since its settlement in 1827, there wasn’t a soul in town that didn’t know the guy. Rumors flew early on that the big guy was a product of infidelity and though his father never fell to gossip, the two were never that close. He had an older brother, Jake, that looked just like his old man and Jack took his dark hair from his mother. All in all, their upbringing was fairly normal. The boys played whatever sports were in season until they found their niche and spent weekends out with friends as soon as they could drive. Jake and Jack couldn’t have been closer and, looking so different, passed for friends more often than brothers. The thing was, they never really shared anything well.
Jake made it out to nearly every football game, but it wasn’t about Jack being the best receiver in the state, carrying the team. Big enough to be a decent linemen, coaches kept him lean for speed. If they needed Jack to catch the ball, the kid made it happen. Every time he looked in those stands and found his parents, Jake was never there. Instead, his brother was down at the fence between the track and stands, ogling cheerleaders. The Kaplan brothers were easy on the eyes, charming, and well mannered. Jake had the smarts and charisma to make him popular. Jack had popularity by association but kept to himself... until Destini found him.
Des and Jake were the “it” couple, ringers for Homecoming royalty. The longer they dated the more she came over. She was always sweet to Jack and Jake thought his brother was just being nice to his girl. Jack may have had a little crush, but assuming he’d get over it, he started helping out when she got a job and Jake was busy with baseball. The rides were nice, the most he ever laughed or smiled. Oftentimes, he’d look forward to seeing Destini again that he’d sit in his truck bed and do homework before walking into the cinema to read a book or screw around at the arcade games until she was off and ready to leave. Everything seemed innocent enough until she leaned across the bench seat and he turned to see why she was moving.
Jack had felt that kiss run through his entire body, innocent as it was and the next time he saw her, he knew that crush wasn’t going anywhere. Destini and Jake were seniors, Jack a junior. Jake planned to go to the University of Pittsburgh, not far off, to play baseball, and Destini planned a year or two at community college online so she could work and build a better GPA for a transfer (hoping for Pitt, too). As Jake rode off to college, Jack promised to keep helping out Destini and he held up his ends, offering rides to work and Pitt whenever she needed- even if she never asked and then... she couldn’t.
As a young senior, Jack was seventeen when a car ran a red light, t-boned his truck, killed Destini on impact, and ended Jack’s free ride out of Economy. The issue was, no one wanted him to stay either. Word got around that Destini was pregnant and those rumors swirled into a firestorm that Jack, not Jake, was the father. As a minor with no record and a promising football career ruined, Jack faced no legal repercussions for the crash. By the time the physical healing and legal process wrapped up, Jack knew that, at least for a long time, no one would forgive him for Destini’s death. A part of him felt the same way.
With a new truck, money from the settlement, and money from fundraising for his medical bills, his parents let him leave to a new city on the other side of the world. Jake would be their golden boy, Jack would be a distant memory they were only reminded of on holidays through mailed gifts, phone calls, and birthday texts. Even after nearly two decades from the crash, his own graduations missed, and the launch of an entire gym and athletic brand, the relationships in Economy seemed as strained as ever. It seems Jack Kaplan may finally be ready to move on and make a family of his own.
